my galaxy s4 isn't charging right - Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I plug in my phone, the charging light turns on, then it tells me to use the charger the phone came with - I am - so why does it tell me to use the original charger when I already am!?! And furthermore, it will just randomly stop charging and tell me that my phones battery is empty even though just a few seconds before it was at 50% I turn the phone on and it says that it's at 50% but it had stopped charging and told me that it didn't have ANY battery power, now I have to have my phone on when I charge it to prevent this, but I'm 99% sure that it would charge faster when it's turned off, why is my phone doing this and how can I change it?
P.S. what's better for charging, daydream or sleep mode?

What ROM are you using and have you flashed any custom kernel?
Sometimes you need to calibrate battery statistics in order to give correct charge.

Try a different cable.

I have NO idea what you just said, but I'm not emulating a galaxy s4, im using a real phone.

Are you using the phone with a stock rom?

Duh for sure you are
Can you screenshot your About Device? Or just screenshot anything and I'll figure out what ROM are you using.

I got a new cable, now my phone charges fine, just to note my old cord was thin the new one is thicker I think that has somthing to do with it.

Yes. The thin cords are 1 Amperes, while the thick ones are 2 Amperes.
Using a thin cord means it won't give the phone enough power.

Orange/Red Light

Hi,
Wondered if anyone can help me out. I have an XDA Mini S, not been used for a while but now I've tried to use it again and I cannot get it to charge. Sometimes orange light comes on and it looks like its charging but then light starts flashing orange or goes out, device won't stay on more than a few seconds. Also sometimes get red light flashing or constant, anyone seen this??
Thanks.

battery is dead, get a new one...
It could be that the battery is too dead to get it to boot into windows. I've noticed on my G4 Qtek 9100 Wizard, that if i kill the battery all the way i cannot get it to charge what so ever.
It seems as if the charging circuit will not function unless the device is booted up. I can put the battery into a standalone charger to charge it up a bit, then put it into the Wizard and then it will charge the rest of the way after is has booted into windows.
I made a post previously about this, and got one reply which did not help, as a registry change has no function if the device cannot even turn on to begin with

Are you plugging it in with the wall charger? If so maybe the battery is dead?
Doug: The Wizard can not be charged (except by the wall charger or some other method) unless the battery still has juice. It requires extra power to jump start the battery. This is documented in the manual and in lots of places on this board...

Thanks, I did not know this was an offically known thing. It's unusual from any other standard cell phone or PDA i have owned in the past.
With them I did not need to worry about the battery running down to 0. If it did, I could just plug the phone or PDA in and they would charge, after they had charged for 10min or so there would be enough charge to turn the device on. I perfer to run my battery down to 30-25% before charging again, due to the limit on charge cycles that Lithim-Ion batteries have. Although sometimes i just forget to charge it
Those charge cycles are the reason alot of people kill the capacity of their laptop/phone battery in a few months. They constantly plug and unplug from their AC adapter. Each plugin initiates another charge, even if its just a small top off charge.
Finally got a new battery and still no joy, when i plug charger into phone i get orange light as if its charging but after about 20 seconds the orange light starts flashing (not a missed call/message as phone has been flashed and no sim card in). Do you think the charging circuit could be broken?

Interesting... hmm. Have you tried charging the battery(ies) in a different phone? (eg. a friend's, service provider's store?, etc?) Have you tried a different charger? USB-comp, wall, auto?
--M
Tried a few different chargers, usb cable and car, none of these work, unit worked with new battery but must have been charge present when battery first delivered. Incidently all chargers used do charge my xda orbit so i know they work.

Help :(

My X1 doesn't turn on anymore! I just woke up and it was off. I left it recharging during the night... Now when I plug it in all I see is a red light on the power on/off button. Any ideas?
Could it be just the battery?
The problem is i got it from someone in England so i'm not sure about warranty.
take off the battery cover and then take out ur stylus and you will see a little hole next to the battery and then take ur stylus and push he little button in tha hole and then that will restart it.
no, that doesn't solve it... but thanks
i tried removing the battery and leaving it off for a while but nothing...
the red light appears only when the phone is supposedly charging
Then leave it charging for hours and don't touch it until the red light goes away. Then you can switch it on again.
Don't let a Lithium-battery run out of power! It drastically reduces the battery lifetime and it's not easy for the controller to charge it again.
Recharge the battery before it runs out, best at >40%
Hmm... think I encountered that red light problem before, though can't really remember how I solved it. Think encountered it when I was charging using another cable (and not the original one) and later was ok after using the original cable + charger.
Thanks guys
I'll try doing that. I never left it with less than 50% battery though... I have no idea why this happened.
I'll give news later today

When the battery decreases that fast (50% over night) than maybe the battery is broken. If charging over a few hours does not help, you should try another battery.

I left it charging (it was at around 60% when i plugged it)
Still doesn't work.. the red light goes off after a bit and if i try to turn it on (while plugged) a red light by the USB port flashes 3 times.
It has the same behaviour as if the battery wasn't on.
I tried reading the voltage and it's at 3.3v which is 0.3v below normal but that's because it's not fully charged, right?
I'm afraid of throwing away another €35 for a new battery and it still doesn't work :\

Are you charging with a computer?
Try the real charger. You can always try a battery from another one who has the same phone or go to a shop where they sell it and kindly ask for a battery to try.
Should be no problem.
oh man! it's working now! i don't know what happened... I didn't do anything else. In fact, I had just sent an e-mail to Sony Ericsson

It seems your USB-PC port does not give currency to the phone. It's the other way around -the Computer sucks the power out of the battery.
You can look in the Hardware Manager (PC) how which currency the USB port provides -it should be around 500mA when the phone is plugged is.
I would suggest using the wall charger to be sure the phone is charging.

It's weird. I've been using the same port every night since I got the X1 and it always charged it perfectly. They all provide the 500mA.
Yeah, I'll use the wall charger from this day on whenever I can haha... *phew*

HD2 Died - Power Problem

Thats right.. last night i left my Leo charging, today when i woke up i noticed that the battery level was very low so.. i unplugged it and plugged it again, noticed that the orange led wasnt lighting up, neither was the phone charging.
The phone gets very very very hot when plugged to charger or USB port on my computer and does not charge at all.
Tried it all, left it all day long with the battery out of the phone, tried charging without it in.. and nothing..it just gets very hot where the connectors (pins) make contact with the battery.
Now im trying to charge the battery on a cradle to flash it with stock rom and SPL to get it to warranty..
Any of you guys has any thoughts?
I see i posted in the wrong section.
Thank u mod
Do you always charge via usb into pc? Is your cradle plugged into the wall or pc? I don't know if you have done this, probably so, but check in windows settings->system->Power and inside the battery tab see if the "When phone is on, do not charge the battery when connected to a PC" is checked.

Yeah.. it crossed my mind to check for it, and that option is unchecked.
Though the charging "orange" led doesnt turn on even if the phone is off.
I usually charge it via usb->pc, allthough i tested with the wall charger and nothing.
I suspect it must have been a power surge that burnt in some way the PBC of the "charging module..thing"
Thanks for the suggestion
i'd check that none of the pins for the battery are in contact with each other if there is heat in that area.
Ok, I'm assuming then that the phone works, but just has low battery at the moment. If that's the case then it doesn't appear to be the battery or the leads. Any chance it's the cable? That of course assumes your using the same one with the cradle. I ask because my device didn't come with a wall charger, just a usb cable so I had to get a few extra plus a wall plug-in with a usb port.

Weird, but unfortunately it didn't. I think being in the US and getting the device from Telstra in Australia may be why I didn't. Well, if it is a hardware problem and you can't get it to charge from the device, I believe you can get a cradle that will allow you to charge the battery independant of the phone. I know it's not the best option on the planet, but it would get your battery where it needs to be to flash and confirm whether or not it's a charging issue with the battery itself.
Come to think of it, this did happen to me several weeks ago. I plugged the phone in before bed as usual and noticed the charging light didn't go on and the battery drained overnight from about 60% to 15%, which it shouldn't have done. Not in standby at least. Soft-reset the next day fixed it. It hasn't done it since. I was installing a bunch of things that evening, which may have been what did it.

Very bizarre battery problem with my Note 4

Hi Guys,
Really need some help here. Just recently my note 4 has been failing to charge properly. When I plug my charger, it will charge for a few minutes with my official Samsung Charger but it will stop even with that. It will not charge at all connected to my laptop or my in car charger. This is what I have done so far..
1) Have bought a new battery (phone is 2 years old) New battery made no difference.
2) Have cleaned the hell out of the bottom connector on the phone (does nothing)
Not sure what else it can be. I love this phone and dont want to get rid but cant understand what is wrong.
So new battery, clean connectors, several re starts, taking out cleaning the sim and everything in the phone. What the hell else could it be??
Please help!!!

Thanks but I have three different batteries for my Note 4 and they all do this. I fear there is something wrong with the connector in my phone, although it doesn't explain why it will charge for longer sometimes than others, this is what annoys me, its totally random!!! last night I got a full charge out of my phone, today, tried charging and nothing!!!
This is genuine mystery, has my phone got a virus or something?? Why does it charge sometimes then not other times?
I don't want to give up my Note 4 I love the damn thing, any further help would be appreciated with virtual alcohol!
Might be interesting to get one of those Qi wireless charging receivers and a wireless charger to see if it charges correctly that way, bypassing the USB port.
EDIT: I use the Fonesalesman one and a Choetech 3-coil charger.

Hmmm.... that's a good idea, but I thought that the note 4 wasnt capable to charge wireless without an adaptor that that
plugs into the USB port.
I could be wrong though.

I use wireless charging every day, never used the USB port except occasionally to copy large files over and to activate Helium for backup. It does, of course, take longer to charge, but I have a couple of wireless chargers about and just set the phone on whenever I'm near one. Phone rarely drops below 50% charge except if I'm out all day.
You need one of these, once you put the back cover on you'll hardly know it's there - I have a UAG case on too, so it's basically invisible:
https://www.amazon.com/N4-SlimPWRcard-integrated-compatible-recommended/dp/B00OFKS66G
and a wireless charger like one of these:
https://www.amazon.com/Wireless-Charger-CHOETECH-Charging-Samsung/dp/B017U9FVKW
Hope this helps.
I bought a orignal bulky wireless cover, then modifit it and removed the qi plate and put it in the phone and use original cover..more slim and works
Thow i suspect that its other hardware falire..my phone is freezing/restarting without any damn special reason, wireless charge dosent work sometimes, it restarts while wireless charging ...all behaviour having something to do with the Power! i have 3 batteries.
O i think its something to do with hardware, thow i will test flashing a stock room again just to be sure. if nothing above helps u can do the same then if problem still remains so you need to take it to a repair shop.

Very annoying problem and one that frustrates me because its random! I got it charging for 25 minutes tonight before it, all of a sudden for no reason stops at 44%....
However I today received an external charger that I bought of eBay for a mere £5.99 it's great. Although it means I have to keep swapping batteries, it's by far the most cost effective solution. Until I see a phone that is a significant leap above the Note 4 I refuse to upgrade which, quite frankly the S.7 isn't...

phone not charging "sometimes"

My leeco x727 doesn't want to charge with the original brick it sometimes charges for a few minutes and then it suddenly stops and i use a different charger and it works perfect but it doesn't wanna connect to my pc. is my usb port damage?

I'm using Amazon basic cable and a S8 charger
When I connect my phone to a new charger it charges but after I disconnect it doesn't want to charge anymore I've tried 3 different chargers all the same results
I don't have any charge issues, not using original cable though, I am using a third party cable, more reliable and durable.
This is my second x727, I lost the first one and bought a replacement, and I don't know if I'm the only one but sometimes when I leave the phone charging overnight I wake up and the phone is dead, 100% charged but dead as in black screen, not responding, phone is cool, not hot or anything, it just seems to be dead.
Even the charging led is turned off, alarms don't run and I found that the only way to fix it is to force reboot (vol down + power for like 5 seconds).
When it boots back, everything is fine, 100% charge and no errors, I've had this issue with both phones, so this suggest it is a known issue with this model.
Is this something someboy else has experienced?
