custom rom to aleviate keyboard lag? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hi All,
I got my s7 edge the week it came out. amazing phone overall. My biggest problem is in the last month, the keyboard lag is unbearable. No matter what keyboard I am using, it takes sometimes 2-3 seconds to pop up so i can type. and then there is sometimes 1 second delay from when i tap a letter on keyboard to when it actually types. If i hold backspace, sometimes it takes 2-3 seconds to delete a word. Weird thing is, overall speed of phone like opening apps is very fast which is good. But most of my use is typing messages and emails and this lag makes it unbearable.
I have heard some people said they went to a "custom rom/kernel" on their Exynos s7 and all the lag went away. is this true in any way?
If so how dangerous is it and are there any comprehensive guides on getting custom recovery and a good stable rom? The last time i dabbled in custom roms was probably 3-4 years ago with a motorola Triumph (ive been on iphone all this time before galaxy s7)

All WM phones slow???

I am relatively new to pocket pc phones. My first was the 8125 in 2006 and then I upgraded to the 8525 this year. Both phones are pretty nice but they seem to be very slow and sluggish. I sometimes will type a text message and be 4 or 5 words ahead of the phone then have to wait for it to catch up before I can hit send. I also notice it to be slow waking up and slow to respond in the web browser. I would suspect it was the phone but both of them have been this way and upgrading my 8525 to the latest official WM6 made no real difference. It also seems kinda buggy sometimes and after I lock the keys it won't show unlock at the bottom until I turn off the display and then turn it back on.
I don't expect a whole lot from my phone. I just use it for text messaging, browsing the internet, keeping track of appointments and of course making phone calls. I love it but wish it wasn't so slow and sluggish. I am half tempted to try an iphone just to see if it is any snappier but the fact that it doesn't have a keyboard is a major draw back in my opinion.

Try one of the lite ROMS floating around. Makes your phone a lot snappier.
My device is very fast with TNT's rom...but there many more hi-performer roms cooked up on this forum!
I have tired TNTs which was my favorite and also Schaps but no matter what I try they seem to slow down after a few days of use. It is very odd. I also seem to have the problem with cooked ROMS that when someone calls it takes so long to wake up from its sleep state that I only have one or two rings to answer. At least with the AT&T rom I get an extra ring or two.
I have checked and when my phone is acting sluggish I don't have many programs loaded and there is plenty of free memory.

hmmmm...you didn't remove the comm mgr icon? Here's some great helpful performance tips by karhu:

Phone becomes unresponsive post upgrade

I'm sorry if this has been discussed at length already, looked through a number of pages and didn't find much.
I bought this phone last August (07) and at the time, it was pre-loaded with WM5. It wasn't until a few weeks ago that I realized that you could update it to WM6. Upgrade was smooth enough, got the GPS to work (sweet) but at times, this phone just stops re-sponding all together. You have to tap a button seveal times to get a response and writing an email when it is like this is beyond frustrating. Then it works fine for the rest of the day. No real predictable time that it happens, seems to be very random. Sometimes after I plug it into my computer it will do it for abit after I unplug it. I don't have many programs running. Seem to have about 30-40% memory available at all times.
So in short, at random times it REALLY slows down to the point of uselessness and then a half our later it's fine.
Is this normal for WM6? If so I have to say the pros don't always outweigh the cons.
I would say that is not normal well at least my experience hasn't been that way
If you have updated since then there has been a 6.1 release for the phone.
Just looked at it again more closely, would appear I'm already at 6.1.

Does it also happen when you reboot youre phone? If not, you might be running out of memory. If there is a update availble for youre phone, its always adviced tot do a upgrade.
Yes when i reboot my phone i still have the same problem :-(

Well, then i am not able to advice you further. Maybe as you stated you should clean-up some text-messages. Or do a factory restore or update. But the last two suggestions are really drastic. You loose all youre data.
Hope some other member is able to help you
Did you notice this issue after installing a certain application?
If push comes to shove try TouchPal.
Free app on market.
i have the same issue sometimes. even after the rom update, or even moreso.
many times putting in text will be laggy and i have to wait. this wasn't the case in the beginning so i'm wondering too what is causing this lags...
install a app manager (Taskiller) will do and post the list of running apps, I suspect there will be something running in the background that is the culprit.
yeah i sometimes get the same issue - especially annoying when typing and I press the space bar, and it doesn't register the spacebar.

I fixed this by re calibrating the keyboard to my finger.
I came on here tonight to ask about the very same problem and found this thread.
My version of the problem is slightly different:
Usually when I've just turned on the phone texting is OK. After a while it becomes very slow and laggy, I mean glacial. If, for example I receive a text and want to reply straight away I'll hit 'reply' and it will take several seconds for the text entry screen to appear. Then the keyboard is laggy, literally two seconds delay after hitting a key before the letter shows on the screen.
Sometimes though, it will start off slow, like I just said and then half way through the message normal response will be resumed.
I did have Touchpal installed but this became very, very slow. Reverting to the standard keyboard improved things but still very slow as described.
I thought maybe it's something running in the background slowing things up but how can I tell what's running? Is there a good app for monitoring running apps?
I've just installed taskiller.
Amazing how many bits and pieces are running really.... anyway, killing a few running programs has improved things just now.
I'll keep an eye on it.
hi yeah i had the same problem as you when i was using the modaco rom
but then i changed to the updated rom
HTC Generic 2.73.405.5 with radio 63.18.55.06EU_6.35.06.18
on this website... first post

and all was fine
You will have this problem with many phones... On the hero it does not lag that much imho, it just takes a while to load many messages, like 100 and above will take a while, and sometimes the keyboard takes a while to load, that is true and I can confirm the same thing here :/

Well, when it is slow it is glacial on mine!
If it's misbehaving it can be five seconds from hitting the messages icon to actually getting anything on the screen, then a further five seconds after selecting the appropriate thread, then two or three seconds to get a useable text box to type into and then each letter takes a couple of seconds to register in the text box.
It's taken me a couple of minutes before now to actually get a two or three word reply sent off! Irritating in the extreme when you're really busy and just want to fire off a quick text.
I think you haven't updated to the lattest release of HTC for the Hero?
Then do so since it will fix your problems.
As people said here if it has to do with apps running in the background this is much better handled on Hero.
Android OS keeps all apps that you start in the background and begins to close apps if memory is getting short.

Mine's the T-Mobile G2 variant which I'm keeping stock (for the time being). The latest HTC ROM update has not yet been released by T-Mobile!!!!!
The problem I constantly get is some keys registering as a long touch, so I get the secondary symbol instead of the letter I intended. I press the key as long as all the others, but the phone seems to hesitiate for a second, then insert the symbol instead of the letter.

I sometimes get this also, but only in combination with the slow behaviour described above. If the phone is performing at normal speed then the long press problem doesn't occur.

gaming stutter issue?

I'm not sure if it's because I'm rooted or what, but I noticed most basic games lag really bad on my phone, like fallout shelter for instance it locks up for a few seconds every couple of seconds and it's pretty annoying... Any ideas?

Since I've had this phone I have had some performance issues with games and apps. Some of them were very strange (Ie: certain graphics or images showing up as black boxes.) Most of these were fixed via app updates. Still having some strange issues with certain apps being cutoff at the bottom (ie Snapchat just had a black bar on the bottom which makes it hard to send a message because you cannot press the send button.) I am now a month and a half into this phone. I am experiencing lag even while scrolling through apps or switching apps. I am also experiencing strange delays with the keyboard popping up when I touch a text field. It's hit or miss. Overall I still love the phone.
Side question. How did you root?

Samsung tap lag

Hey every one! So I have a question that I havn't been able to find an answer too. This pertains to at least the two samsung devices that I have. One is the tab 8 sm-t290 and the other is the xcover pro that walmart started giving their employees. So the issue is a delay or lag in the screen tap after the devices come out of the lock screen or after they have sat there for a moment. It's like you wake it up and start taping and a couple of seconds later it will start registering all the taps or in game, I stop for a minute to read dialog and I have to tap couple times to get it going. At first I thought it was just because of the lower grade tablet but then I got the xcover pro from walmart (sposively a $500 phone a year ago) and it has the same issue.
So I assume this is by design? Is there a fix for it or a setting that I'm missing to make it snappier? The only thing I found that helped was after rooting the tablet I played with the governor and set the cpu frequency to max using termux. I installed a version of linage os that didnt have gapps installed and it was lightning fast, but when I installed one with gapps on it, I believe the issue was creeping back but I can't verify that at the moment. This is mostly just annoying and has caused me to quit using the devices in favor of more predictible ones. Any help would be appreciated!
