I'm sorry if this has been discussed at length already, looked through a number of pages and didn't find much.
I bought this phone last August (07) and at the time, it was pre-loaded with WM5. It wasn't until a few weeks ago that I realized that you could update it to WM6. Upgrade was smooth enough, got the GPS to work (sweet) but at times, this phone just stops re-sponding all together. You have to tap a button seveal times to get a response and writing an email when it is like this is beyond frustrating. Then it works fine for the rest of the day. No real predictable time that it happens, seems to be very random. Sometimes after I plug it into my computer it will do it for abit after I unplug it. I don't have many programs running. Seem to have about 30-40% memory available at all times.
So in short, at random times it REALLY slows down to the point of uselessness and then a half our later it's fine.
Is this normal for WM6? If so I have to say the pros don't always outweigh the cons.
I would say that is not normal well at least my experience hasn't been that way
If you have updated since then there has been a 6.1 release for the phone.
Just looked at it again more closely, would appear I'm already at 6.1.

My apologies if this has already been adressed.
Like many people, I overzealously upgraded my T-Mobile Pocket PC Phone to WM2003 a few months ago and now I am regretting it.
The thing that drives me crazy the most is that this device (which was nice and quick before) is now slower than a snail in molasses. Sometimes it takes as long as 10-15 seconds for the start menu to pop up, and a similarly long amount of time for the phone dialer to come up. Also, I frequently see sluggish response trying to dial a number. Often it may take as much as a second or two after pressing a number on the screen before it actually dials it. Very, very, very annoying.
Another question: have the memory leaks been fixed yet?!?!?!
I've scoured through the boards and other web sites trying to find a solution to this problem, but to no avail. Does anybody else have any feedback or suggestions?
Thanks - Justin

Soft-REset your device many times and this "bug" is fixed... (or not :-()
Well... after a little more research I decided to install CheckNotifications and Notification Clear Fix from ScaryBear Software.
http://www.scarybearsoftware.com/ppc_cn_overview.html
The device is MUCH snappier now that I have cleared out nearly 300 useless event! The memory leak is still there, but the overall sluggishnesh is significantly reduced.

does your universal hang, grind to a halt or become unresponsive when you leave the device for long periods of inactivity?
If anyone has any suggestions other than just about every hack currently known please post swiftly !
i'm sorry to say you're not alone, but i'm happy 'im not the only one...i tought i was goiing crazy

The only issue I have found is that the backlight does not come on at the level it was at prior to being left ..
Its often on the absolute lowest setting and stays there.
I suspect this is a design feature/flaw to prevent the battery running down in your pocket ...
But it is very annoying.
Other than that, in corporate mode, with all the chuff pruned out its stable, quite smooth and fairly snappy all said ..
*touch wood
In my case the Jasjar is quite stable. But one thing that is driving me crazy is that it occassionally hangs when I receive a new SMS. This is not all the time. About 90% of my text messages are received correctly but for the remaining 10% it hangs. The worst part is that when it hangs on a new SMS even that SMS is lost so I have no clue if I even did receive a SMS. Even worse since I would not know that the device has frozen and so if during this period somebody tries to contact me on the phone I will remain unaccessible. This makes the whole thing so unrelible and is spoiling all the fun.

SMRZ i feel ya on this
My device is very stable and works swiftly with the numerous tweaks ive done but all it takes is one silly crash over an sms or a hung pda when trying to bring it out of standby and all the goodness and riches that this device brings just get washed away.
I dont think we are asking for much, why dont things like this happen with any other phones like nokia or sony's or even a £25.99 phone.
Why dont the accepatnce testing people in these companies do their jobs propoerly and test the phone to the hills beofre they let it leave the labs.
I've always been at the forefront of cutting technology and there's a heavy price to pay for this. Companies shoould not release anything until it is 100% tested.
I would rather wait another 3 months for something to have all the bugs ironed out then released into the marketplace than to have a device thats so new that it doesnt even work properly

@cpascal
I'm in total agreement with you. I look at the stability of my wife's SE K750 and cry sometimes. My Nokia 9500 (Commi) is also very stable but obviously does not have 3G.
I found the XDA Exec has been more stable than my now sold-off JJ. But I am using a Data only SIM so perhaps this is why.
I'm looking for advice. Should I stick with the 8525 or get something else.
I'll return it for a new one, but now I'm getting nervous as I read about folks having similar problems with freezing. I do need a reliable phone / pda. While it worked, I liked it, however, the 8525 froze at least once a day, would, at times, balk at making calls, and finally had the phone / internet functions die. It was never dropped nor abused. I did the fool active sync. fix and installed a task manager and a program to re-map the ptt button to voice activated calling. Those are the only changes I made. I am trying to figure out if my bad phone is an exception or the rule.
So, from the standpoint of reliability, would you recommend to stay with the 8525? I do have a choice, and I can change my order from the 8525 to almost any phone. I am considering a downgrade to an 8125. Two of my collegues have them and they are reliable. Any thoughts?
All I can tell you is I have not had any of those issues with mine.

I'm probably jinxing myself, but I've had mine since mid-January and so far all is great. I power it off and on each day, maybe it helps, who knows. I've also had the occasional freeze and boot-up sometimes freezes but I think those are normal pda things that you just learn to deal with. If you are within your 30 days and you think it's unstable just swap it with a new one.
Did you install your task manager to a storage card? That was a very common problem of freezing for me... two to three times per day. Since I moved all critical apps to the internal memory I've only had two freezes (this was 3 weeks ago) and they were because I was messing with apps.
i had my 8525 for 2.5 weeks and it works great. i have the same hacks plus a few more, especially the bigger button dialer. I did update the ROM to 1.34 (september 2006 version, latest official) from HTC america's official website. Oh, by the way it's an unlocked version using T-Mobile. My biggest complaint is the not-so-firm keyboard. It's ever so slightly slides out in my pocket... Maybe you should flash yours too...
My Out-of-the-box experience was similar to yours. It froze, the bluetooth didn't work at all, ugh. I upgraded to HTC ROM 1.35 and now my Hermes is pretty stable with only one freeze.
I am relatively new to pocket pc phones. My first was the 8125 in 2006 and then I upgraded to the 8525 this year. Both phones are pretty nice but they seem to be very slow and sluggish. I sometimes will type a text message and be 4 or 5 words ahead of the phone then have to wait for it to catch up before I can hit send. I also notice it to be slow waking up and slow to respond in the web browser. I would suspect it was the phone but both of them have been this way and upgrading my 8525 to the latest official WM6 made no real difference. It also seems kinda buggy sometimes and after I lock the keys it won't show unlock at the bottom until I turn off the display and then turn it back on.
I don't expect a whole lot from my phone. I just use it for text messaging, browsing the internet, keeping track of appointments and of course making phone calls. I love it but wish it wasn't so slow and sluggish. I am half tempted to try an iphone just to see if it is any snappier but the fact that it doesn't have a keyboard is a major draw back in my opinion.

Try one of the lite ROMS floating around. Makes your phone a lot snappier.
My device is very fast with TNT's rom...but there many more hi-performer roms cooked up on this forum!
I have tired TNTs which was my favorite and also Schaps but no matter what I try they seem to slow down after a few days of use. It is very odd. I also seem to have the problem with cooked ROMS that when someone calls it takes so long to wake up from its sleep state that I only have one or two rings to answer. At least with the AT&T rom I get an extra ring or two.
I have checked and when my phone is acting sluggish I don't have many programs loaded and there is plenty of free memory.

Hello all,
I have tried searching this forum and have found various similar threads but none quite the same.
I used to use the gps on my hd2 quite a lot, both in windows mobile running copilot, and in android with google maps. But recently, I can no longer use it. If i open google maps or navigation i will get anywhere between 2 seconds and 2 minutes and then the phone will freeze completely, even if i dont use anything just having the program running is enough. I installed gvSIG mini maps and that does not work well either, it either freezes or simply never returns any search results.
The thing that is making me feel it is possibly hardware related is that it worked perfectly for a long time, the phone is about 18 months old now. I have tried various roms (the one i am using just now is Android 2.3.4 - HyperDroid-CM7-v2.1.0-HeadyHoneybadger) and it makes no difference; with the exception of the gps/maps the phone is very stable and I am perfectly happy with it. I have tried using setcpu to lower the processor speed in case this was being caused by heat, but no difference. I am considernig reinstalling a Windows Mobile build and testing the gps from there.
Any thoughts?

Stuart
quite probably just an android issue, go back to winmo6.5 and see if it does it then, if it does hardware if it doesnt you know its android
I would agree with what Richy99 said to go back to Windows 6.5 and check. I am currently on the same Pongster build you are on and do not experience any freezing of the phone you describe. In fact, I am using an optimized gps.conf file for my area and get locks in 2-20 seconds from a cold start now and used the gps navigation for hours while traveling without issues. I suspect it is something hardware related.
Thanks for the responses.
So, I reinstalled Windows Mobile 6.5 downloaded from the HTC website. Clean install, opened google maps, seemed ok for a few minutes, then i went into the menu and ticked 'Use GPS', then it worked maybe a minute and froze up completely and the phone restarted. tried this about half a dozen times got maximum a minute use each time.
Given that the phone is always pretty stable except when trying to use gps/maps, I would guess that the hardware fault lies in that part of the phone. How long as HTC warranties? The phone is 16 months old now so it doesnt look good but never mine
Will contact HTC on the off chance anyway!
Cheers
Stuart
Small update, contacted O2 and they gave me a freepost address to send it back to for repair (a company called A NOVO i think it was), about a week later I got it back, they enclosed a letter saying that they have replaced the main circuit board inside the phone. So, same old case, scratches and all, but its like a new phone, new IMEI number and everything, normal service resumed! Full marks to O2 customer service and the repair company.

prob 70-80% of HD2 Android users getting this freeze problem.
this is reply i just sent to another thread....:

Well, I been having the freeze issues with namd forever, with every build, every sd card etc....especially if i turn gps or data on or both.
So, for last 36 hours, i thought i'd do a lil simple test.
Downloaded win mobile stock ROM......36 hours stressing the heck outta my phone, toggling everything on and off etc. guess what...NO FREEZE.
So, in my opinion, 100% NOT hardware, definitely Android hd2 related.
