Hi, I'm currently finishing the development of my first app. It's not a very original idea (a job board) and I wonder how could I promote it. I know a few sites where you can post about software or startups, like Reddit.com/r/startups, promoteproject.com or pineapple.io but I would like to know it does exists any site to specifically promote apps (free, if possible).
Are unofficial app stores a good resource?
How do you get noticed in this huge market?
Thanks.
In terms of Free, you pretty much listed the core ones, but constant promotion helps, I have also heard that promoting in Facebook groups works too. To answer your last question, the easiest way to get noticed in my opinion is spending some money on advertisement, the more installs + review your app gets the higher it goes up in Google play ranks, which in returns means more visibility.
"Word of mouth" is the best free advertising instrument in the beginning. Don't forget to have a website with relevant information, profiles in social media, a blog.
A lot depends on what you're promoting. If it's an app (ie not a game) then you might want to get in touch with app review websites, magazines, etc. I'm not sure how many people read these but it's a good start. As has already been said, word of mouth is important too as IMO it offers a higher conversion rate than promoting via the sites mentioned. I would further add that encouraging your users to leave positive reviews (and discouraging them from leaving negative reviews) will do a great deal of good, as a 5 star rating with your name including a good keyword for instance will get you a decent amount of traffic.
Seek out people for whom your app likely solves a problem. If you can't define who they are or where they're likely to hang out, perhaps the app isn't as useful as you want it to be? If it is, find them talking somewhere and mention your app in conversation, but make it natural, not forced, not like some salesman annoying everyone.
For games, sites like Rock Paper Shotgun are good if there's also a PC version.
I think free promotion doesn't work anymore. Paid reviews of your App on huge sites probably will work.
I am also trying to promote my app, i already convinced many people i know to download it, however there has not been any download beside of them. Now i hope i have more success here in this forum - we will see how it turns out
Here are the 12 ways which are used to promote your app
1) Video Marketing
2) Use of Social media We can use various social websites such as Face-book, twitter, linked-In, You-tube for promotion of android apps.
3) Publish apps reviews You can have reviews in the form of small description about your app,
ratings of the apps, review date. This will help people know about the android apps.
4) Forums & Blog posting
5) Swap banner ads
6) Free trails Serve some of the features at free of cost.
7) Showcase app in website
8) Press Release
9) Email Marketing
10) Advertising
11) Newsletters Publishing newsletters for the apps promotion will help in increasing the audience for your apps.
12) App directories & article posting
Here are 8 of your most creative options:-\
1.Build a microsite. This one or two-pager showcases your app to the web audience. ...
2.Build a teaser website. ...
3.Start a blog. ...
4.Share your content. ...
5.Create a product video. ...
6.Get press, tons of it. ...
7.Pitch to app review websites. ...
8.Contact bloggers who would care.
Hi friends, there are many ways you can promote your app.
Free way:
1. Face to face promote, this need your friends and families help.
2. Create social accounts, and write some information and functions of your app, communicate with your fans.
3. Forum promoting, find some related forums and advertise your app in there.
4. Make your app free at first, if your app is a paid one, you can make it free for some days, people will download it.
If you want to know more about how to promote app, here I recommend you some forums, you can find methods in there.

Acquiring users is always challenging, specially if your budget is limited or doesn’t exist. In this case I would encourage to try any ad exchange solutions like Tappx.
Tappx is an app developer community near 20,000 developers that exchange ads among them. It is, in my opinion, the easiest, fastest and affordable way to start gaining traction from zero without losing focus on what really matters, that is, coding and improvements to make happy your users.
Is designed by, and aimed to developers like you. And the best thing is that Tappx is entirely free.

App store optimization (ASO) is, at it’s core, search engine optimization (SEO) for the Google Play and App Store. Just like search engine optimization, app store optimization focuses on keyword relevance, search relevance and the keyword density in your description.
With almost half of iPhone users in the US finding apps through search, your app description is one of the most important things you can focus on in your app marketing efforts.
It’s also really easy to get started with competitor research through platforms like App Annie where you can search something like “healthy recipes for women” and see what apps show up and their ranking.

I think best part will be starting a pre-marketing campaign for your app through social media, blogs and other platforms . It will be helpful for you building a solid user base and develop initial user interest. Later all depends on how your app performs in real world . :good:

Personal warning I'll also include AppsPlanet into those list if I were you.
Note that, since everyone on Nexus S is presumably running at least Android 2.3, the vulnerability those apps exploited is already patched, rendering the malicious code ineffective. It's only people with older OS versions that need to be concerned. Yet another argument for taking responsibility for software updates out of the hands of manufacturers and carriers.

So, fragmentation actually helps some of us
Google needs to fix this and adopt a similar process like Apple does. I try to be careful when downloading stuff, but there are many, many people out there who are not tech savy and this can be a large problem down the line. Piracy is another issue they need to fix. Has Google ever found a way to stop people from downloading an app, backing it up to SD card or PC, and then requesting a refund? If they haven't, they need to immediately.

there's something along the line in regards to DEV protection about that.
It basically lets you only refund it once! for the lifetime of your Google account
so any app that you refunded once, you will not be able to refund it again the second time
which basically will prevent you from ever upgrading to a new version, even if you did rip them off once.
there are updates to your installed google apps like once a week, or once a day depending on the developers
the worse ones EA for example are aprox once a month upgrades
it's extremely annoying to not be able to update the apps, you always get annoyed about new apps alerts if you don't update.
so i always make sure all my apps are legit, so that i can use the UPDATE ALL button without having to manually update each app independently
wow here we go !
Luckily I don't download every app. Especially those that use the word sexy.

But those are the best ones!
Thanks for the heads up. Thankfully I didn't download any of those. To the point of the android app market becoming like apple, I'd resist that. Freedom is why I stopped using my iPhone and got a nexus s
most of these apps sound like porn anyway so who ever downloaded should have a virus or whatever the case may be. use your computer lol not your precious android.
not all of them, there are many legit apps and "useful" apps that were hacked, and then injected with the trojan, then release back to the market for free
like PewPew for example it's a legit game, but this is a fake version that works too, or too well, as it will download the trojan meanwhile you play the game
in the PewPew case, they didn't even rename the app
many of those other apps are just the same originals but renamed with the added payload inside

An Update on Android Market Security

I have created a word game called Anagram Online. But the download number is quite bad. Can't understand why people don't like my game. From my previous experience, it only take a few days to pass 1,000 download number.

Is it too boring? Too stupid? The graphic is not attractive? How do you think of my game?

Might work on the graphics a bit but overall is looks OK. I think maybe it's just that you're getting your first taste of what download numbers look like for crowded genre/market that already have dominating apps in them (words with friends, etc).
It's hard to stand out in the crowd. Do you do any promotion?
My previous game performs much better than this one. I have published 3 games already. This is the first multi-player game we tried to test the market. Unfortunately the result cannot reveal our hard work.
We have sent press release to different blogs. Also distribute the game to different 3rd party app stores. Just want to see if the game have any obvious defects before going into real-money advertising campaign.

READ PHONE STATE AND IDENTITY
Allows the application to access the phone features of the device. An application with this permission can determine the phone number and serial number of this phone, whether a call is active, the number that call is connected to and the like.
I know this is probably required to do multiplayer, but I won't buy it (or install it if it's free). I don't know you and I'm not giving you access to my phone#, serial#, active calls, and caller I'm connected to.
Just my little slice of securing my life the best I can.
privacy concern? I thought that lot of peoples like word game in general
Root, i thought you were an android dev?
Phone state is required for a bunch of stuff, most of it does not require a concern with security
It's hard to get on top with word games. Our app is ranked around 200 or so in brain & puzzle if you want to check it out. (has multiplayer as well)
Its called Tile Takedown
Also, your download is over 5MB, which for a word game is a lot... is most of that your dictionary? or graphics?

Yes, I'm a dev. Just the fact that it can read my phone stuff and do whatever with it bothers me. My ethics as a programmer caused me to stop writing a "SMS Text Spam Blocker", which was going to be a slick application, just on account of what I realized I could do inside that broadcast receiver
Now, I may be wrong about the "phone" permissions, but I tend to error on the side of caution when it comes to my information and privacy.
Side note...I'm hoping the size thing isn't an issue these days. The app I'm developing now is 12MB...has 1,000 row database and about 50 png images. People have to realize you're not going to get high-end apps in the kb or sub 5MB range! (Note: Google Market limits app size to 50MB)

Just check your word game. It should be hardly profitable if the download number is around 10,000 - 50,000. I don't think that ad can generate high revenue.
It makes over $600 a month, not sure what "hardly profitable" is to you though
Sorry for my wording, it's just my personal view. Not intent to look down on your great product
I think that ad cannot generate high revenue because the ecpm are quite low in my apps, only around 0.1x. I use admob. If the download number is high enough, the revenue can hardly pay for the dev cost.
Theres a full version of the app for $3, but the free version generates more income.
The reason you are stuck at 100-500 downloads is because the dev console isn't updating. The ratings and bug reports are real-time but the download count hasn't been updated in about a week. I'm sure you'll be in the 1000-5000 range by the time it updates. or higher
Google just sent an email out to developers but it looks unrelated to the updating issue.
I like game like scrabble, I hope you make multilanguage game in future!
The download number is always not updated. I have made post in google support forum to gain more attention.
But the ad request in admob / adwhirl has been checked as well, which is around 100. Our other apps generally made 1000- 5000 in the first week. Therefore it seems like not many people are interested in trying the game.

I agree with ravishi, I am checking mine for the last three days and it hasn't updated, something wrong with the console stats.
Google send an email saying something about the "what's new" in apps needs to be dealt with.
Have just changed the icon. Hope it will be more attractive to other players.

Here is our review of the Motorola Xoom:
Overall, the Motorola Xoom performed very well and is a very good tablet. However with a price of $599 for the WiFi version, this is on the high side. In addition, we feel that the Xoom was rushed to the market. It is not complete. First, it launched without being Adobe Flash ready which is a key advantage over the iPad. However by the time we received our unit, Flash 10.2 was available on the Android Market so we installed it without a problem. Second, the micro-SD expansion slot is not useable but will be with a firmware update. Although the tablet has a large 32GB built-in memory, it should still have a working expansion slot. Third, the Xoom was not easily identifiable through two different Windows 7 computers. Windows 7 installed the necessary drivers but we still experienced some problems with the computer recognizing the Xoom.
The Xoom is the first table to run Android 3.0 (Honeycomb). Every other tablet manufacturer is probably keeping an eye on how well the Xoom does. This review did not concentrate on Honeycomb but we were impressed with its tablet-specific UI. It does the job well but it still needs to be improved upon. Our two main gripes with Honeycomb is 1) lack of a native file manager; and 2) lack of true task manager/switcher. Android is “better” than Apple's iOS because it can multi-task. However, Honeycomb still fails to easily switch open apps. RIM's PlayBook and HP webOS do this well so why can't Android? Even the Notion Ink Adam created an app switcher to easily change apps. Also there is a lack of tablet specific apps on the Android Market.
The Motorola Xoom performs well. If the price was not so high, we may overlook some of its weaknesses. It is a powerful tablet and the best non-Apple tablet currently on the market. We are giving it a 4.22 out of 5 points which is the highest score we have given a tablet. Many other Android tablets (at a lower price) will be launching this year so it will be difficult for Motorola to become a leader unless it reduces its price.
Click here if you wish to read the full review...

anyway, kinda weird that the droid x and archos 70 have such different cpu and gpu scores - they're both running the same 3630 and powervr SGX530.
The person has an interest in mobile gadgets and is trying to jumpstart his blog. Nothing wrong with that. The review is an honest effort, no matter what you may think of it.
@OP
Suggest to use more whitespace for better legibility, and shorter paragraph & sentences, aka newstyle writing. People online have very limited attention span. More pics would help illustrate and to make the body copy less dense.
On a tech basis, there are different aspects of system speeds: general performance (synthetic CPU benchmarks), web performance (browser benchmarks), screen response, multimedia performance, game performance (gfx benchmarks). Different CPUs have different strengths. For example, the Teg2 has strong general & game perf, but weak video playback, and screen responsiveness is lackluster. The last is probably hampered by the OS, but is worth noting, especially when comparing against a more polished device like the iPad 2.
Suggest you cover each aspect separately, since each can vary.
Keep up what you're doing, and ignore the riff-raff.
I think this is the wrong place to jumpstart his blog. We already had a million of reviews and a million of Ipad vs Xoom discussions. The least he could have done is to post the whole article on here and then a link to his blog.
That would be an idiotic way to do it. Online pieces typically have accompanying formatting & pics, which wouldn't translate to a text forum. This is the Internet. We use links now.
There's no difference between posting a review link from a personal blog as opposed to one from Engadget, which, last I checked, is a blog.

I can't see how this is an idiotic way of doing it. This thread contains no information. A blog contains 90% text, who cares about the formatting? If he would post his article we could comment and discuss it on here which is what this forum is about. If it is a well written article people would click on the link and subscribe to his blog.
There is no need for links to Engadget either. Posts on this forum are much more informative and authentic than any other review article out there. If i want to read review articles or look at pictures i type in motorola xoom into google. There is hardly a shortage. No need to spam this forum.
On another note, "our last review", "TabletConnect first reported" and a blog full of adverts doesn't really sound personal to me.
Thanks for the feedback both positive and negative.

Yeah, to encourage people to try without having to buy - it's a weird psychological thing, people won't spend $0.99 on an app they're not sure about, but will happily put down $3.99 for a cup of coffee that might not be that good tasting
One suggestion would be to just include a few topics (50?) and no search, favorites, share etc. But you're the best judge of what you think might be enought to give a taste but still encourage some portion to lite users to buy the full version.
