Relax, since you haven't even received your phone yet I wouldn't worry. Besides, don't forget the people posting on these forums are a fraction of people who have received this phone and have no issue. People post when they have issues, not so much when they don't.
The pictures they took were taken with screenshots so its all software. The displays are fine. When a phone first releases someone always finds something that's not right with it. I find that's very minor compared to the screen seperation with the nexus 7 and light bleed with htc phones

AMOLED problem forever: quality inconsistency
My Note 2 is much worse than my friends with greenish white and bad viewing angle (luckily it's also brighter)
No the pictures were not screen shots. Its definitely a hardware issue.
The pictures have the screenshot notification on the top... How is it not a screenshot where's the phone at then???

ive been thinking the same thing... but in the back of my mind, most of the people who dont have an issue wont post in the troubleshooting forum. yet, all the people who have an issue, and post in q&a will be asking questions and troubleshooting problems.
if you dont want the negativity (problems, troubleshooting) try the general forum, or accessories forum.

Pretty sure the screenshots are trying to show where to look for the effect.
Oh yes Its definitely an issue with the new amoled screen ... go to every place that has a demo set and try to scroll the settings page (dark black background) and you'll notice immediately ... its like the screen has a refresh rate of 10 fps in black bg
Very embarassing for Sammy ... this is going to blowout into a huge media issue real soon, you'll see
Yeah the screen shot are only showing you where to look it says but a couple of pages in there's a YouTube video if you watch it in 1080p on a laptop you can see it I'm just paranoid now haha pay 600 pound for a phone that don't even come on the day it's meant to be delivered haha
Tell me which Samsung phone with amoled hasn't had some people complain about the screens. I would venture that 95%+ of those owners don't have a calibrated TV or monitor, or even close. I have been very fortunate to have almost all phones I have owned to have virtually perfect screens. I've seen much worse with demo monitors, whether they be phones, TVs or monitors and people oooh and aaah about how great they look. So right now I am shaking my damn head.

If anyone with an s4 looking at this can you see the problem in 1080p videos or Facebook app or twitter or gaming as that's what I use my phone for
Ok. First thing, you start a thread ABOUT a thread. Why not just discuss it in the original.
Secondly, the smearing issue happens when scrolling in settings. Nowhere else. I'm sure you can live with it.
Mwah!

No need to get cocky haha I was simply asking a question in a different forum room to see if anyone else had the problem and its been confirmed my samsung I think it's software related where they haven't set touch wiz refresh rate high enough so a simple update will sort it

Yes. Just tried a video with a dark BG and a white person dancing. On low brightness you see weird artifacts sometimes. Also tried in Pocket, the text looks ugly when scrolling with dark theme.
can ou try on full brightness or 50 60 % and report back as thats meant to stop the issue
Mine seems fine... bit of a nit-picky thing anyways to be honest, hardly a common real world scenario...

One where a tiny, barely noticeable amount of stutter is going to destroy the browsing of a menu?
EDIT: OK, so it was so unnoticeable I missed it on my own screen, but I've noticed it to. Its hardly worth crying over though... as mentioned already, its pretty much only ever going to happen on the settings menu.
I can confirm that with the brightness turned up max, the purple tinge does seem to be reduced.
I'm not sure if I'm lucky but 6 hours on screen time and just under 40% is great in my book. I'm on the Sprint variant I have my phone on max brightness, sync and location always on as well.

My battery life is terrible. After upgrading from an S3 and watching my partner's M8 and Z3 be ****ing battery tanks this is very disappointing. ~2-3 hours SOT is comparable to the S3 I came from, and meanwhile the Z3 is at 70% battery with 3 hours SOT *with* everything turned on and not debloated. Though admittedly, this phone is wonderful in every other way so it's hard to stay mad.... Just the occasional sad stab of battery anxiety/jealousy every once and a bit. I've only had the phone a week though, so that feeling should hopefully fade.

I'm not sure if you did factory reset after when you first bought the phone, but it def helps in my case. ( I did 2 or 3 time factory, don't do the setup yet, just keep doing factory reset once the phone boot-up). I get from 2 hour SOT, to about 4-5 hour SOT with 5% left at the end of my day with the same setup as when i first setup.
PS: don't do restore apps, just do clean install all your apps and settings.

I Yeah, I did two factory resets when I got it because I accidentally auto-synced my Google crap, so it's all fresh.
This was just a small frustrated vent. This is my only upgrade since my S3 and it wasn't really by choice as I had to change carriers but this phone is the best option currently available (the other one on my list being the S5, cuz battery and sd card). Meanwhile my partner has hopped from a Note 2 to a HTC M8 to now a Sony Z3, and I watched the amazing all day do-whatever-the-****-you-want battery life and figured that more flagships would be like that... Instead there's this disappointing as hell battery life that isn't much better than what I had and I still need to watch what I do so I'm constrained in the same way lest it craps out midday.
So while this phone is amazing as hell, with many great features, it leaves a bitter taste in my mouth. I could return it and get an S5 but what a downgrade. Not really any other options with removable storage and battery. At least I can hope root with help improve some battery life, and it will certainly fix the ****ty DPI. Also hoping for a slim Zerolemon battery with higher capacity to come eventually.

Yeah, I'm aware, and pretty terrible looking ones at that IMO. This LG screen is gorgeous and one of the few that don't look like complete ass next to an AMOLED. Shame about the DPI though, but that will come!
On a side note, I fell into a laptop with a 3k screen a couple weeks ago, and I'm really enjoying high-resolution information dense crisp screens.

Well we've got this glorious beautiful hi-res screen but the Gmail app can fit 6 lines, whereas on my S3 (with tweaked DPI) on the 720p screen I could have 10 lines and it was amazing. Not to mention I have smaller hands so I can adjust the DPI on my keyboard to have it take less screen space, making it easier to use with one hand, while at the same time being able to view more if my browser or texts or whatever. It's quite wonderful to be able to choose per-app DPI for different usage.
Lowering DPI which is what was being recommended in that DPi thread, gives you more text to view ?
The thing i dont understand is increasing resolution raises DPI. So lowering DPI reduces resolution. Things become bigger when you lower resolution. You can fit less within the screen in that case.
You can't raise the DPI because its already at its max. So other than reducing font size i don't understand how 'tweaking' DPi fits more in the window.

You're conflating DPI with resolution. The resolution is the overall amount of pixels the screen displays, like a canvas, and when you set it lower everything looks bigger but you have less room to fit things overall as icon sizes and text haven't changed. Setting your screen to anything but native resolution in most cases also makes things look worse off, depending on how well your screen scales and how low you go, it gets blurrier and blurrier.
Having a high resolution is like have a massive canvas to work with, you can fit many many things sized smaller on there. Now it can make everything appear too small, so that's where DPI scaling comes in. You need higher resolution icon and things programmed to scale otherwise when you zoom them they get blurry (like a 480p video on a 1080p screen). You can zoom too much though, leaving all that extra lovely canvas space you're screen is capable of filled up. That's what LG did, or you can zoom them out and the higher resolution you have the more you can zoom things out and have them still legible. LG zoomed everything in way too much wasting a lot of potential screen real estate. Sure it's crisp and nice, but I may as well have a 1080p phone. I want to zoom it out, while keeping the resolution, so it all stays crisp.
Sorry if that's a bit messy, I'm thinking of Windows desktop icons as I type this. Haha
---------- Post added at 07:15 PM ---------- Previous post was at 07:13 PM ----------
Android apps are set to scale to whatever the manufacturer deems correct, so we have these giant FisherPrice apps with massive buttons and icons taking up half the screen. Browsing the web though is beautiful so far on here though.
(There's also ppi/dpi like when Apple talks their Retina crap, but that's how many physical pixels your screen has crammed into what sized space. We're talking software DPI)
(And the DPI in the other thread is global scaling of everything smaller and has it's share of problems. Per-app DPI using Xposed is where it's at as you can have each setting independent in case problems like crashing arise, or you just don't need something smaller)
OP, are you sure you don't have auto brightness on and set to 100%? Either way you have amazing battery life. 3.5 to 4hr sot is usually the norm for me without gaming. Usual calls, web, txt, email, tapatalk, some youtube
I agree, I've had all HTC devices (currently also have an M9) and I can't get this phone to dye. Lol going on 12 hours of heavy usage with 14% still. Very satisfied with this.

My G4 is an AT&T variant and the stand by Bayer life is amazing. Off the charger yesterday at 6AM used it maybe 5 or 6 times for quick peaks at Email or a random notification and noticed at 1 pm battery was still at 100%. Art 5pm with fairly light usage I was down to 93%. It's one week old and I usually turn off unnecessary notifications like Facebook or youtube etc. The only App that was disabled was drivemode, and brightness on Auto. Even under moderate usage I'm a embedding a 12 hour work/travel day at 80%. I don't Minnie about you guys but this is fantastic to me. It seems to me with this phone it really powers down when resting on standby.

Restoring from phone to phone or from ROM to ROM has always introduced problems for me. Setting things up as a new device produces noticeably better results. That "feature" does not work as well as intended.
Coming from an iPhone i've always used automatic brightness and have found it helpful. Since using it on this phone I have found it either dims too much or not enough, always bright and dark even if I am in one spot. It's much more noticeable on this phone.
Is anybody experiencing similar?
Yeah I feel the same, the auto brightness is not sufficient especially indoors. At night with the comfort view turn on I just manually adjust the brightness to around 30%.
Yup it's pure garbage, often times it will read 0% indoors. Guessing they did it to save battery life. Hopefully an update fixes it.
yea, the G6 has without a doubt, the most annoying auto-brightness I have experienced on any phone I can immediately recall. It's honestly amazing that something as remedial as auto-brightness is something we are still discussing in 2017 as it relates to a flagship phone no less. I am an Android fan, but I do appreciate Apple's ability to at least get the little things right. I want to love the G6 and in many ways I do, but sadly I will be returning mine because it simply frustrates me in some pretty basic areas.

I actually have seen that in the past however, I just don't think that in 2017 we should have to be installing 3rd party apps on a $700 phone just to get something as simple as auto-brightness working properly. It's kind of sad.

I understand what you mean, a premium device should feel PREMIUM. But I won't be returning it because it's the best android device and LG Phone I've used period. I know its annoying but I rather trade the brightness issues that can be easily fix with a 3rd party app without rooting, unlike Samsung's annoying message telling you each time that your volume is too high wild listening to headphones. Sometime you need to justify it with other annoyance from other manufacturers.
I'm coming from an iPhone 7, and I honestly haven't noticed any problems with automatic screen brightness. My only gripe is that the minimum brightness is too high for night reading, but I figured out that this can be resolved by turning on the battery saver if I'm using the phone on the dark.
Hey XDA,
I've had the smaller Pixel 4 since Google handed out review units at the Made by Google 2019 launch event in New York last week. I plan on spending a few more days with it before writing up a full review, but if you have any questions about the device feel free to ask and I'll try to answer to the best of my ability.
I have the 64GB white Pixel 4. I'm using it on T-Mobile in the U.S.
Does TWRP for the pixel 3 work on it?
But really, is battery life atrocious? I use my phone for work and i'm consistantly on it. Currently on pixel 2 regular with stripped out OS and I still have to charge it about halfway through the day
Thanks for taking some of your free time to do this, Mishaal.
I've ordered the same exact phone you've been using for a week or so now. I'm very excited to own another Pixel device again. I have just a few quick questions about the phone:
In your experience, how long does the battery last after a typical weekday/workday?
Can you comment on screen legibility outside during a sunny day? Will I yearning for a High Brightness Mode enabled kernel in the future?
Any other quirky behaviors with network or bluetooth connectivity? I've found that my LG G7 very much dislikes certain bands of the 5 GHz spectrum. Additionally, it seems to get less cell signal strength when compared to other devices in the same location.
How is the speaker quality? If you have any experience with the Nexus 6, how does the speaker quality of the Pixel 4 compare to the Nexus 6? If you have any experience with the Pixel 3, how does it compare with the Pixel 3?
Do you have a photometer? If so, can you measure the brightness of the infrared light that is frontward facing and tell us whether it's on 24/7? I'm guessing it is for the face unlock and also the hand waiving movements. It'd be interesting to know how powerful that is since our eyes can't see it, but could still be harmed by it (if powerful enough)... which I doubt Google would do, but you never know.
If you have a photometer, could you tell us the intensity of the LED light on the back for flashlight mode?
Thank you.

Battery life is as bad as we all expected =\
3 hours SoT for heavy usage (Google Maps navigation + music streaming + Google Camera + light gaming in COD Mobile)...
to up to 5 hours SoT for light usage (social media like Reddit, web browsing in Chrome, local music playback in Google Play Music, etc.)
This is NOT a phone you can take on vacation and expect to last you a full day. You will definitely need a charger or power bank handy.
(Note: I tested with all the standard/advertised features enabled, including AOD, Now Playing, Motion Sense, 90Hz, Adaptive Brightness etc. I also have really good signal in my area so that's not a problem)
---
Brightness is too damn low outside! I live in sunny Texas and struggle to see the screen outside. Not sure if HBM exists on this phone since it uses an LG panel.

No issues yet with connectivity. Haven't used it long enough to come across said issues, though.

@MishaalRahman You mention SOT heavy use and light use. How about just walking around browsing now and again, pictures when the mood strikes, and a phone call and text now and again? Not that concerned about SOT more like daily use. Will it last a full day?
Also there has been some question about the biometric regarding bank and app authorizations from fingerprint to face unlock. Does face unlock work for banking?
TIA

If you describe yourself as a light user, then it should last you a full day. However, poor signal and high brightness for extended periods could easily cause you to run for the charger. It can last a full day, but I wouldn't plan on it reliably lasting a full day unless you really know your routine.
About face unlock app support: Support is very, very limited right now. Only a few password manager apps and Tasker support it. I don't believe any banking apps do. It will take some time for apps to get on board. Not that it's difficult for them to do so.

The refresh rate of the panel shouldn't effect the brightness at all. I asked about screen brightness on the previous page, but apparently the brightness in the sun is disappointing. Additionally, because it's an LG panel, there may be no way to boost the brightness in the sun with a custom kernel like you could in the past with HBM on Samsung OLED panels.

Interestingly, the brightness level of the display seems to affect what refresh rate the phone runs at, lol: https://www.xda-developers.com/google-pixel-4-90hz-display-only-works-at-high-brightnesses/
Dylan Raga believes there may still be a HBM toggle since he found one on the Pixel 3 (and that had an LG panel).

It's still too early to say...but forcing 90Hz all the time I'm getting I think...20% more battery life than my 24 months old Pixel 2.
My pixel 2 was factory reset a month ago.
And this is vs my Pixel 4 on the first evening , night (sleeping) and morning+afternoon
I still got 10-11% drain overnight. So I haven't started to check what's draining...if Motion Sense, some system service etc.

How would you compare the smaller Pixel 4's battery life against Pixel 3XL ? (I would compare to the 3XL because it's the one with worse battery life for last year's models, I own both 3 and 3XL)
Maybe both the SOT and typical Standby Time + your regular bahaviors on smartphone.
Thanks in advance man, I am really considering the smaller one this year.
I've seen the post in the questions and answers section on root. But it is far from clear. Is there going to be a step by step guide on rooting? Not everyone that uses xda is a tech expert.

I would say an average SoT of 4 hours with Motion Sense + AOD + Now Playing + Ambient Brightness is possible, with enough standby time to get you through a full day. But that 4 hours of SoT is NOT heavy usage - I would say a few pics + music + social media. It gets harder to last the full day if you add GPS navigation and gaming into the mix.

Sadly, it will take some time for TWRP to support the Pixel 4 due to the partition changes in Android 10. That means rooting will require patching the boot image of each release manually and fastboot flashing it. We can do a tutorial, though I'm kind of short on time personally. I'm sure plenty of forum users will have such threads up.
Greetings all,
I have read a little here and there about screen issues, but I am not sure exactly how these issues are manifesting themselves (burn in? weird low-light artifacts?). I am getting a new OnePlus 8 Pro in next Wednesday and wanted to ask what you all recommend I do to test my screen to see if it is working properly.
A few things to note:
- I don't care what the screen looks like at 0-50% brightness. I will likely NEVER have the screen under 50% brightness, so even if the one I get looks like **** at that low level of brightness, it won't affect me.
- I plan on using the screen at 120Hz and at QuadHD resolution with no motion smoothing turned on.
- I will also likely choose non-vivid colors.
Any tips would be appreciated! ^_^
Then I'd suggest you make sure you're not going to use it at this screen brightness in a too hot environment, as you may get overheating issues. Check the related thread(s) on this forum, but also on OnePlus official one. This issue can be a real pain.
