4G is 3G. It would say 4G LTE if you were on LTE.

Its a USA thing mate. Tmobile/Atnt for long have shown only 4g icon irrepective whether the phone is on LTE or WCDMA and thats because the 4g icon essentially just another fancy name for high speed HSPDA+ or LTE. Ther is nothing cheating about that. When I used my s7edge in India it still showed me 4g although I was on a 3g connection.

I forget what the code is to get to same menu from dialer.

I use LTE only mode when my LTE is only 1 bar and it switches me to "4g"
But anyways, you can try switching to lte only and see if the 4g lte icon comes on instead.
I lose phone and texting when I am in that mode. Fyi

Hey there guys,
I have a GT935T (locked) atm, and as I am planning to move to India, I will get it unlocked. However, I am unsure if the T Mobile S7 Edge will work on the bands supported by Indian carriers. As far as as I have found through my research, the bands used in india are as follows, from the gsmarena page:
2G capabilities
GSM 900, GSM 1800
3G capabilities
UMTS 900, UMTS 2100
4G capabilities
LTE 850 (5), LTE 1800 (3), LTE 2300 (40)
The GT935T doesn't have the LTE band 40. Does this mean I will have problems connecting to an LTE network in india? I also found in my research that most Indian carriers that support LTE use the band 40. Does anyone have experience in this, or some expert opinion?

Why only use it on 3g? Flash the correct firmware for your country/location/carrier and it should pick up a better signal. That is unless there is only 3G network where you are located.

According to Jessica Wilson (952.703.4316) at Atts Office of the Pres, the H+ icon indicates you are on a 3G capable network. I know thats not helpful, but thats Atts answer to your question.
The Atrix SW only uses one icon for 3G connection, no matter whether it's 3G or HSPA. In stock, that's H+, in GingerBlur it's H. I set it to 3G on my modified GingerBlur. Cheating? Maybe.
You can do an H+ icon and push it into GingerBlur's framework-res.apk and replace it on your phone, if you really must have the +.
I got to ask, at my work place I don't get 3g but usually edge but once I got gingerblur at home I get (H) and when I go to work I get (E) and sometimes (G). I would think (E) stands for edge but what is (G) if (H) is for 3g? Thanks

you won't be truly HSPA+ (H+) until enhanced backhaul has been installed at cell sites in your area.
check the coverage map:
http://www.att.com/network/
click coverage at the bottom and run your cursor over the map of the US. Cities that have had some enhanced backhaul installed will show up as you mouse over them.

Any 3G connection - normal (UMTS), HSPA or HSPA+, is displayed as:
- H+ in stock
- H in GingerBlur
G is GPRS and E is Edge. For some reason, I don't get Edge here in Singapore. Maybe they don't have it. Or maybe the Atrix doesn't distinguish between G and E anymore in 1.8.3... Or maybe Atrix is incompatible with Edge here. No idea.
I think the classifications of the different connection speeds in Android are a bit dumb.
My Nokia N900 displays, 2G for GPRS, 2.5G for Edge, 3G for UTMS, 3.5G for HSPA (Obviously if it supported HSPA/LTE/WiMax etc, it would display 4G lol) and that makes logical sense to me.
Its really weird, my phone shows that my network is on hspa when I force it to wcdma only. I'm on Fido and they share rogers towers and their hsdpa? Random... I am however getting about 5 down and 1.5 up which is fast enough for me really.

Go to your dialer and enter *#*#4636#*#*
Then go to Phone information, you should see your Network type there.
I've only seen two network icons in the stock status bar, E and H+ -- but H+ has been used while I'm on HSDPA and HSPA and even UMTS, so it's ultra unreliable, and I've never even seen HSPA+!
And an FYI:
No matter what the 4G coverage areas on the maps and what the mobile network company reps say, there are no true 4G networks in existence today, at least none that honor the original requirements for 4G.
Basically what occurred was that the ITU came up with a standard called 4G, companies falsely marketed 3G technologies as 4G, ITU gave up on the 4G standard, told the mobile network companies that they can keep the now meaningless term, and the ITU then made the IMT-Advanced standard which is what 4G should have been all along. IMT-Advanced solutions are in development, and not yet public.

Well, HSPA is just an upgrade to WCDMA = UMTS. So I am not surprised. I do not think you can force your phone to NOT use HSPA but remain on 3G.
If you want 2G only... that is GSM I think.
Hi, my GS3 is draining battery very fast ( can't even last a day). I am trying anything I am able to do to increase one charge's lifetime. I tried turning off LTE by going to mobile networks\network mode and chose GSM/HSPA (Automode) instead of the defalt GSM/HSPA/LTE (automode) but it doesn't seem to have any impact. It still shows 4g in the notification bar at the top of the screen. When i checked APN, still rogersLTE is selected and there isn't any 3g APN options there. so how do you exactly turn off the LTE? tks,

Lolz. You did turn it off. On Rogers hspa is 4g,lte is 4glte. On Telus rom hspa is properly marked with h+. You are using ltemobile apn whether you're on gsm or lte or wcdma. You can manually input other apn's.
Check or select with *#2263#.
You can even select lte only and choose just one currently working frequency on Rogers and ignore the rest. Potentially saving battery by not searching for others while still getting speed benefits from lte. Provided you are in densely serviced by lte coverage in your area. Or wcdma(hspa) only which is what I use.

Yeah, because we don't have custom section when picking, unlike i9300 model, and Rogers runs wcdma on 1900 as well as 850,I would preferably chose wcdma all, to take advantage of 1900 band as well.
It is lte that runs only on one band forgot which 1700 or 1900 as I'm with Fido and no lte sim, so far till 700 band is launched in canada, so that one can be selected alone.

The battery life seems far more dependant on lte coverage than which radio you are using. I have been playing with this in the ottawa area (turning off lte) and get big gains if i am in areas with spotty coverage and no gains in areas with solid coverage.

Yep. I was contemplating selling mine and getting the LTE version (on contract) but HSPA+ is fast enough for Netflix in HD. Fast enough for me! Don't need the carrier bloat, contract extension and battery reduction.

Uhh... if you want to use it on T-Mobile expect 2G speeds unless you're in an area where they've started or finished the 1900 MHz refarm (even if they do, it'll be pretty much limited to a city or county, but anywhere else you won't get 3G/HSPA speeds at all)
here's a link to a website with reported sightings of 1900MHz refarm on T-Mobile:
http://www.airportal.de/
Also, the T-Mobile version of the Note II has support for AT&T HSPA as its HSPA radio is a pentaband (so it'll work pretty much everywhere else on HSPA), also the radio of the T-Mobile version is DC-HSPA, or more commonly known as HSPA 42mbps whereas the Internaltional and AT&T versions have HSPA radios with support for only 21mbps. The T-Mobile version also has LTE bands for AT&T and the eventual T-Mobile LTE network, but is currently DISABLED in the software, so we'll have to wait to get that unlocked (I also heard there'll be requirement of a LTE SIM card, but I can't say that for a fact yet).
In essence, if you're going to spend ~$700, get the T-Mobile one, at least you'll have warranty, better signal on HSPA, LTE support later for T-Mobile and AT&T, and as a result, you'll get a better resale value when its time.

I wonder if that's because it lacks the right bands or just because it's disabled in the software?

I did this already and, as you mentioned, the phone defaults to no signal if no h+ is fetched, and is rendered unusable. However, my friend is able to pickup the h+ network with much more ease using a tmo GN1 (both phones operate on WCDMA in this case). So I suspect something with the radio rather than the hardware, no strong statement here. I tried to flash icsblaze and others without any success (actually had to recover my system several times due to major crash). Are there any tmo radios available for Jelly Beans?

As far as I know, the roaming agreements only cover GSM (Voice and GPRS), and do not cover high speed data (HSPA, HSPA+, LTE).

No, don't think so, 4G is labelled with 4G itself, or LTE.
The American carriers have a bad habit. They label HSPA+ as"4G". And LTE as "4G LTE".
While others label HSPA+ as H+, LTE as "4G"
