Unable to get ota updates after unrooting. - Zenfone 2 Laser Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Device: ZE550KL
Old ROM: Pre-rooted 1.15.40.639 by @shakalaca
Current ROM : Stock 1.17.40.1234
Bootloader: Locked
I had first gained root by flashing the pre-rooted fastboot files. 3 weeks ago I flashed stock 1.17.40.1234 to use ZE600KL's Unlock App. The Unlock app didn't work. So I went back to then latest stock. The rooted ROM was patched to prevent OTA updates. But after flashing stock ROM I should be receiving OTA updates, right? When I check for updates from settings, only "last checked" date changes. I know there is an update to 1.17.40.1531 on ASUS website, but why I am not getting OTA updates? I even tried downgrading to 1.16 and checked for updates, still no OTA updates are coming to my device. I have now flashed 1.17.40.1234. How do I get OTA feature back? My Bootloader is locked.

Please read entire OP if you really want to help. He has mentioned that he flashed stock rom v1.17.40.1234. I am in the same situation @ZenFreak

I think it's bcz of bootloader. Does the updater checks if it's unlocked or not? Cant you guys download those updates and flash via zip?

yeah, i have already done it. But the point of the discussion is to know the cause of the issue. A bootloader locked device with official asus firmware must get ota updates. Also note that people who rooted their device before unlocking are now unable to unlock their ze550kl. I feel, this has something to do with the ota feature

Most of the manufacturers use some trickery to know which devices use a rooted rom or a unlocked bootloader and I think they block those devices. I think the ota updater transmits some data back to their servers. I'm not sure about Asus but I had a Micromax device (Indian company, Chinese handsets) that use to do that kind of thing. Root checking and sending data back to server. It may be using the imei numbers to do that. Still it's a guess . I'll have to check to be sure.

Flash From ADB tools
You must Download Recovery File and Boot image file and then the latest firmware file.
then Flash it through ADB tools. and apply the updates. that will help

Device has been modified after odin flash

Hi all
I used to be able to flash official firmware using odin when i wanted a clean install and get ota updates.
Recently i have been getting "your device has been modified" when trying to check for updates.
Download mode. System status and binary "custom"
My network providers firmware is MEA and i have been lucky to avoid the knox issue as i have not odin flashed any firmware beyond MGA.
The only thing i have done recently is install foxhound 2 which is on ML1.
I know i can reset it using triangleaway but obviously i would have to root it.
Is there a reason why the bootloader would still show as custom after an official install?
Just concerned incase i need to send it back for repair thats all.
Many thanks for your help

[Q] Few questions about Razr M

I am new to Razr m i have a few question.
1. Is my device bootloader unlocked
In Fastboot I can see
Device is LOCKED. Status Code: 0
2. Are there any files of razr M that i have to backup first before attempting Unlock and root. I have S4 before buying razr M as my second devices in which i had to backup the efs partitions so that's why i need to know if some backup of razr M is needed.
3.Whats the latest official firmware of Razr M. Currently my device is on 4.1.2.
Thanks

How is 4.4.2 update compared to 4.1 because I have read some bad things about 4.4 update like poor battery life. Should I unlock the bootloader first and then update or unlock it after update.
Which custom rom u would recommend to use as daily driver for better performance.
Sent from my GT-I9505
You have to update to unlock the boot loader and yes my battery life took a significant hit. I installed app ops and then disabled allot of the security location and keep awake items and battery life was alright again. No idea if there is a good choice for a 4.4 rom on this device yet but cm11 is getting close.

Absolutely unlock the bootloader, absolutely upgrade to 4.4.2 , before the 4.4.4 update is live to all phones. If it is already available for you, manually flash 4.4.2 and use motopocolpyse to unlock the bootloader. You might never get the chance to unlock your boot loader again.

So there pushing 4.4.4 to the M... Where did you read this at... I was under the impression that the next ota was just going to be bug fixes and a security patch to block the root and unlock method

I rooted my phone, now a custom binary blocked by frp lock message pops up.

I have the samsung galaxy grand prime, and while in class, my phone was acting up so I restarted, when I restarted the message that is in the title popped up and now I can't use my phone.

The software booted? I think your rooting method did break something. I can give you a deodexed rom for 5.0.2 and you can flash it if you want.

This happens when you don't toggle OEM unlocking in dev options. He can still fix his phone. He can just do a software update in Kies and go back to normal. Root again but with the OEM toggle..

OTA update when rooted

My phone is unlocked and rooted. It wants to download the OTA but I know that Motorola says on their site you will have problems with the OTA. Should I download it or Should I flash a ROM.

You must be PURE stock to take an OTA update, or it will fail and bootloop... Flash a rom if you wish.
What i did was make a back up of everything just incase and then look up the ota version on your phone and get it in the rom section and look up twrp flashable OTAs and just flash it. you might lose root but its easy to get back if you flash magisk again.
You can found the right guide here:

Of the current version? lol, no, we wish... we are averaging 3-6 months behind OTA releases for full ROM images, if we get them at all. Moto does not officially provide them, so they have to be leaked somehow, and sources are completely dried up yet, but it's getting there. :/
Hi. Can I get Oreo Ota for mi xt1670 with rooted device but locked BL? I'm on stock everything. Thanks.

You can't be rooted with a locked bootloader so your question is obsolete.
You can apply to OTA with an unlocked bootloader.
You can't if you're rooted or changed anything else in /system or /vendor.

Thanks for the reply. Very clear! Please I need more help. The thing is...I don't want the oreo ota right now. This is my mother's phone so I don't want any problem. Nougat is just fine for now. So I need to stop the upgrade notification spam. I believe I must unlock BL, then root, then freeze the upgrader app. Is that correct? I can't force stop the app. That's for now.
I've read bad reviews about oreo battery drain and other stuff. That's why I'm trying to avoid it.
If someday I want it, maybe will install some rom.
Thanks bro.
EDIT. Does this make sense? Or should I stay stock everything and take the ota/ignore the spam everyday?
EDIT 2. Another question. What happen if I take the oreo ota, and i don't like it. Can I unlock BL, root, install some nougat rom, as a pseudo downgrade?

Oreo ist absolutely fine, no problems with it.
I haven't heard of any issues like increased battery drain, for me nothing changed at all regarding battery and the rest is also working flawlessly.
It would be a lot of action to unlock and root the device just to stop the updater service.
If you don't have any other plans that need root privileges I recommend just taking the OTA (s).
If you want to run another ROM later you can always unlock the bootloader, install TWRP, root the device and install any kind of custom ROM, Nougat, Oreo or Pie. There are also TWRP flashable stock firmwares which make it easy to move between different stock versions.

That's good. A pseudo downgrade is possible. Thanks man. I'll think about it. And yes, the root privileges is just for stopping the updater.
Cheers
EDIT. Man, are you sure about this? Taking the Oreo Ota, and in the future unlock BL, root and install whatever rom?

Yes I am.
Just check some of the custom ROM threads, there are some that need stock Nougat as base but the most of them need Oreo. For custom ROMs there are no up/downgrading problems, that's only the case for stock firmwares.
And as said above, there are TWRP flashable stock builds that doesn't have these problems too and will bring you to whatever stock firmware you want, not just pseudo. (Here:
https://forum.xda-developers.com/g5...o-twrp-flashable-stock-builds-coming-t3830482 )
So if you're on stock Oreo after unlocking the bootloader and flashing TWRP all options are open for you. Just don't forget to make a full nandroid backup incl. EFS and persist before you flash anything.

OTP's recieveable after installing twrp?

I am thinking to flash twrp on my phone and I want to know that if i will be able to recieve otp updates after flashing the recovery?
No
You will get ota notification but it will not update...
But You can Flash the updated twrp flashable stock rom by avinash on xda.. when an ota comes
Or you can download firmware packages form official site of Asus, you may not find smaller update files there... But the major one's for sure
