Lags on games with my Nexus 6P - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys, i've bought my nexus since april
I'm seeing some lags when i play on games that haven't got too much high graphics like Clash Royale and BBTAN but when i play on games that are "heavier" than BBTAN like Asphalt 8 and Mortal Combat X there aren't any lags.
Are you having the same problems that i have?

Me too ;(

Hello! It might be due to your wifi, you see, games like clash royal are very wifi based, while asphalt games do not use Wi-Fi.

Clash lags for me regularly regardless of the strength of my WiFi connection. Seems to improve with a reboot.

No lag in clash royale using benzo Rom

Hey Im having the same problems too BB-Tan seems to be dropping frames a lot, even though its not a game that requires data connection. Pokemon Go is choppy in the menus and my friend's one plus x is completely smooth. I have done extensive research regarding the Nexus 6P and its lag in graphically intensive games. No one seems to have found a solution, fix or even an explanation. Whereas there are tons of people talking about how smooth their nexus 6p is in games... Any help is appreciated.

I play Order and Chaos 2 and it only starts lagging after playing a while and the phone has got hot. I'm using the developer preview of android N, everything on my phone is stock.

Thermal throttling of Snapdragon 810 is the reason.

Edit: Opps, posted question in wrong thread.
But while I'm in this one, I fixed my game lag in Clash of Clans by editing/replacing the thermal-engine.conf file in the /system/etc/ directory with one that allows the SoC to get a bit more toasty before it throttles at all. It does make my 6P a tad warmer from what I can tell through my thinnish case, but for the performance trade off, it's well worth.

Let's add and real racing 3 to the list! Really poor optimization EA! It is unacceptable to stutter on high end device, and noy just on XZ, but with other phones too.

Are these games stuttering with other high end phones too? Like s4 and htc one? I will be a happier man to know this that its not just the XZ

Real Racing 3 looks as good as any other phone, is completely smooth for me. And I'm no casual gamer like some of you lot. I can tell the difference between 30/45/60 fps and tell when it happens.
IronMan 3 is working fine for me, it stutters a bit when entering the menus, but while playing it is very smooth and fast.
Real Racing 3 is running at 25-30 fps, but it keeps the same framerate along all the game with no stutters or noticeable drops.

The only stutter that I've noticed on Real Racing 3 is at the starting grid, before the start, when there's more than 10 cars ready to go...
for Iron Man 3, the further the distance you're flying, the more the game will stutter. And yes the menu is not very fluid either.

For me, Infecrinator really stutters in the menu(the game is 2D) and real racing sometimes when I'm speeding and at the start of every race. Also can't download GTA games, no matter which country I'm from

With the GTA games, it will probably be the developer's fault that they haven't flagged it as compatible with devices with the Z's resolution/dpi.

I can confirm that iron man 3 lagged. Dungeon defenders 4 on highest settings lags when you have a mob and use spells/skills.

Wow, try with inner camera, manual acceleration and brakes on the big races with lot of cars! The game stutters like hell, especially when the phone gets hot, and thermal control slows down cpu! I also can tell the difference in fps, and this is nowhere near to the satisfaction! It is a real shame, that the iphone 5 with far less raw power, can handle the game flawless! Put them side by side, and see the difference for yourself! And please, don't tell me that IOS is better by default in games! This is no excuse! That is not a good job done by the developer, or i am start to thinking that, the FullHD is too high for our CPU-GPU?!

I purchased GTA III and Vice City two weeks ago for my Z (damn i missed the special offer), and had no problems downloading, installing or playing. Now if i go to Play store it says Vice City is not compatible with my phone. Maybe they discovered some nasty bug and dropped compatibility until they relase an update. I play it and it works very well for me.
GTA III is still flagged as compatible though.
The fifa companion app and age if empires also stutters and lags.

I'd have to agree with the people saying Real Racing 3 slows down bad on the Xperia Z. Most people who say that it runs fine probably just tried out the first three races. The first real test to see if the phone runs the games properly is by playing the first endurance race; if you manage to go through that race without slowdowns at the end, then, let's say I'd like to know how you set your phone.
That said, all is not lost for Xperia Z users for that game. I did what most people would consider stupid and google'd how I could configure graphic settings of an app. I eventually found an app in Google Play that allows you to configure graphics settings for Real Racing 3; after setting it to medium, the game runs real well now. Turns out reflections are probably the resource hog that causes slowdowns.
So far, games I've tried that slow down in the Xperia Z:
- Real Racing 3 (unless you tweaked the graphics)
- Dungeon Defenders (when you're dealing with huge waves)

[Q] Plants vs Zombies 2 not running well.

I'm playing the plants vs zombies 2 on my nexus 10 and the game isn't running well.
the framerate keeps dropping to less than 15 FPS on the stage selection screen, and the gameplay doesn't show a steady performance even in the rest of the game.
someone else is going through this? does the nexus 10 always shows bad performance on gaming due to the high-res screen?
thanks!

I've never had issues on more intense games that are well optimized (Asphalt 7/8, Real Racer, etc) but I've had a few issues with 2D games.
Huh? PvZ 2 isn't in the Play Store...
-------------------------
My devices:
Nexus 10 - Stock Rooted
Nook Tablet - CM10.1
I'm getting lags with PvZ2 as well and i wouldn't hold my breath about a fix, considering how long it took
for PvZ1 to be officially available for the Nexus 10.
It's available on Play Store now. It's quite laggy on my Nook HD+ running CM 10.1, though still playable. I also have a 2012 Nexus 7 and it's running smoothly there. Not sure if this helps at all, but there you have it.
I've definitely seen some slowdowns in pvz2. You can lower your screen resolution to improve performance using this app.

Games

Just games. Are there any crashes, low framerates in popular games or any other issues? Mostly I'm interested in GTA and adventure point-and-clicks but you may write your opinions on anything you want.
My kids like to play Minecraft on my G Pad and it seems to run fine. I have also played Artemis, which works great.
Battlefield 4 Commander App is a bit laggy on Stock ROM. But I think fixes will bring better fps soon.
I have played asphalt 7,8,and real racing 3 on the g tab and 2013 nexus, every now and then on the nexus 7 I've gotten a short stutter which has not happen with the g tab.
FIFA 14 and Asphalt 8 work without any issues.

Exactly, and "overheat" is a bit of a strong term which suggests that the machine will crash or the hardware gets damaged after playing games for awhile. It gets warm but nothing out of the ordinary IMO.
I've been playing Flashout 3D, Assassin's Creed Pirates, Galaxy on Fire 2, Anomaly 2 and various other games and it's been able to run them all with no problems (Pirates does stutter every now and then but not enough to bother me and the fps is usually beyond 30).
The main problem for me when running games on the G PAD, is that they eat everything out of the battery from the phone. When I have only been playing the game for a short period of time, my battery soon goes down to 50% which is really annoying.
I would recommend "Jetpack Joyride", its free to download the google play store however is more designed towards kids. Its a truly addictive game and will keep you entertained for hours.
It plays even intensive games like Asphalt 8: Airborne well, and nothing ever felt overly laggy. But stock KitKat clearly comes with a huge speed boost, and switching from one model to the other for days at a time, I always noticed the difference.
I had major perfromence issues with games with lags, stutters, fps lower than 10... But it was all fixed after I moved to CyanogenMod
Since latest Nightly my two crashing games were fixed. Plants vs Zombies and Anthill.
I've got a question, is Order and Chaos Online working fine on your GPads? Mine is unplayable

Huge freamerate drops while playing Modern Combat 5

Any of you guys experience freamerate drops in Modern Combat 5 or any other demanding game? I've had those in Real Racing 3 before switching kernels too. They are totally random and can slow the game down to 5fps even. Switching performance mode on doesn't help at all.
I mean, 6P is one of the most powerful devices on the mobile market and it can't handle the game that's been around for quite some time?

Lags in games?

I've read people that say that G6 lags in games big time. Is it so? Is it not buy if I would want to have some fun in-between moments?

Sorry never played those. But sports games like NBA 2k17, Fifa and Real Racing 3, which are all very graphic intensive plays with no lag

Nope. No lag here either and i play some pretty intensive games.
Considering the games you listed are all just simple 2D games it should run them easy and battery is gonna last a long time.
No lag on: DB Dokkan Battle, Fire Emblem: Heroes, Summoner Wars, Pokémon Go and Tap Titans 2

What if those games just can't see 18:9 and are hardcoded to run in 1280x720? And when stretched they stutter somehow?
another example is RR3 which throttles to 18fps often which is way too low for such powerful 821

Well, you basically choose in which aspect ratio you wanna play games that don't support 18:9.
You can choose the usual default format 16:9 (with black left and right borders), optimized format 16.7:9 (with small left and right black borders) or 18:9 (fullscreen). It basically crops the games window to your liking. Really easy to set up and works like a charm.
Most games don't support 18:9 yet, only some new ones do, but i play pretty much all of them in 18:9 np. Performance is the same in either of those ratios, i'm pretty sure, as it only crops the image.
If a game is hard-coded to lower resolution then i'm pretty sure it plays at that resolution and doesn't up-sample. I've played a cpl of games hard-coded to 1080p and they actually still looked great despite running on a 1440p screen. You can still choose aspect ratio tho.
I've had no issues. So far I've played Pokeymanz Go, Magikrap Jump, Devil Twins, Sailor Drops, TriggerKnight, Dungeon Vilage, Game Dev Story, Ninja Village, Plague Inc, Infectonator, Tales of Link with no issues. The only time I've managed to make this thing stutter is when streaming music over BT and the phone switches back and forth between wifi and mobile data a couple times (this happens on my way home in the afternoon. It picks up my 802.11ac, then I whip around a corner and it drops it, whip back and it picks it back up).
I've played King's Raid on lg g6 and its lag pretty bad, i did change resolution , battery saver and graphic quality but still lag big time.
Can any of u guys give it a try?
But other similar games run very smooth which is strange.
Thx

That's probably not weird considering it won't even install for me through Google Play. It's says it's not compatible with my phone.
Doesn't look like a demanding game so it's probably just not optimized.
They claim that in Mushroom Wars Space and Mushroom Wars 2 G6 is especially lagging. Could anyone prove this claim?
What about framed/2? they say G6 is snail laggish in this

I play this game on my LG G6 and I can confirm that it does lag like CRAZY! Especially BD Raid DAMN!!! Feels like its gonna blow. But everything else is super smooth. Weird thing is my Note7 Exynos 8890 runs Kings Raid on max settings super smooth.
I have zero lags. But I have my G6 pretty much debloated and I always disable the, "Game Battery Saver" option. I think that option makes a difference.
But I mostly only play racing games and COD games.

It seems it has problem with 2D games. My wife's G6 lags like crazy in Angry birds pop. I tried to force GPU rendering in developer settings, but didn't help. I even lowered game resolution in battery settings
No lag at all playing pes2018
Yes, it does lag, but only when charging and playing at full resolution. It also only charges at about 1000 miliamps when screen is on. Not a huge deal for me, but I do hope oreo update will fix this.
Mine has this weird thing where a game will be super smooth for about 5 seconds but goes choppy, then I have to pause and resume for it to go back to smooth for another 5s.
This mainly happens for me in RR3, Plague Inc, Beast Quest and a few others.
Must be a software issue as it's obviously capable enough hardware. Hope Oreo fixes this!
Can't deal with low frame rates!!
Anyone else had this issue?
For me every game is working quite well except Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes. Which I really like so it's quite annoying.
