installing older version of app over new one - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi. i am currently on nameless v7 5.1.1 rom. very happy so far. the only problem im having is i cant seem to install app downgrades without uninstalling the app itself. one example is instagram. im on 7.22 and want to go back to 7.20 but when i try to install it over current one it says app not installed. same thing with whats app. i previously was on kyuubi the last rom and was able to do this fine. so what can i do to make it work again as its a hassle because i end up loosing a lot of data if i have to uninstall an app then install another version ot it. the kernel im on is nameless too. if anyone can help id greatly appreciate it thanks.

bump?

install xposed and XInstaller Xposed module, it will let you install older version of apps without uninstalling them.

You first need to remove the app. If for some reason it was put into the rom as a system app you need to use one of the apps from the Play Store that can delete these (with root).
The part that they fail to mention is that you need to reboot the phone after deleting the app, otherwise the OS thinks the app is still installed. After reboot, you should be able to install the downgrade.
Alternatively if you have TWRP or similar recovery, you can go into the File Manager in the recovery and go to /data/app/ and delete the folder of the offending app and reboot.

You can also delete it from the rom's zip file so it doesn't install it at all - just go into the zip file and delete what you want from system/app in the zip file before you flash.

Market problem with my new Android ROM!!!

Hello...
I've cooked my latest Android ROM for my super HD2, but i've the same problem with market app (Vending.apk) since my first Android ROM.
The problem is that the market doesn't start for nothing! If tap on market icon, i see the white screen less of 1 second as if it want to start, but afterwards it close automatically!!!
I use "cyanogenmod_183" with "tytung_kernel_r12_beta"!!!
I've tryed to change build.prop in system folder with "Typhoon_build.prop" that have more specifics for HD2, but without positive results...
I've also tryed to overwrite root permissions with the kitchen (superuser + su) but nothing to do!
What i've forget to do? I need to activate specific setting for market?
Help me please! Thnx...
If you are usa send me a phone number and I will help!!

I'm Italian... sorry... Thanx for the availability!!!
I need to know if there are any specific setting that needs to be enabled. The market don't have download problems or similar... in my ROM the market doesn't start for nothing!
What i can do?
To make the new market work do this:
1. Download the new market.
2. From root explorer change the cache permission to 777
3. Delete the vending.apk in system/apps
4. Paste the new market inside system/apps and rename it vending.apk
5. Reboot and enjoy.

[Q] I accidentally removed Youtube. Help.

I accidentally removed Youtube. I tried to install it again for google Play store and its crashing after opening. I installed it as apk, and it did the same thing. any help?
If you are on stock rom (i suppose you haven't deodexed it), go to /system/app using root explorer and see if you can find Youtube.odex. That file may be causing some problems. Delete it, and then install a downloaded youtube apk.
If you're on a custom rom, I recommend you to reflash your rom as i can't think of any other solution.
If you are on custom rom or stock rom download youtube from google play store...and if you want make it system app
Globally recognised and certified NOOB
Use root explorer move your downloaded apk to system / app and set permission as r-w-r-r--.
Before that clear data of your previously installed YouTube.

Restore Samsung Sans font after trying Font Installer app

Downloaded Font Installer app and it works fine, just that not all applications update with the selected font which I find very annoying. I stupidly made no backup within that app itself, and nandroid doesn't work for me since I'm on MK2 4.3 (locked bootloader), so have no way of restoring a backup.
Is there anything else I can do to get Font Installer uninstalled and then have my stock fonts back available to me (specifically Samsung Sans)? I did a google and found one link where someone replaced files in the system/fonts folder, but the directions were very unclear and I'm not sure what the repercussions would be if that failed to work. Please let me know if you can help me in any way. Currently I selected Roboto in the Font Installer app and default in System settings, so now at least everything is on Roboto, but ideally I'd like to have the app uninstalled completely and get back to Samsung Sans (which is not in the Font Installer list). Thanks for the help.
Anybody? Surely I'm not the first person to ever do this?

looks like restoring from an odin image will do the trick, but that may be way too general for your situation.

I can't use mediafire at work, let me know if the link on this thread works....

Link worked, thanks. Have you tried this yet? Did you use Odin or just copy and paste/replace the files in the system/fonts folder using es file Explorer or something? Not sure what to do next, and if it even works.
Bump. Still would like someone to confirm they've done this, or offer an easier way if known. Thanks.

Delete folder in system/priv-app

So here is my issue,
I installed the app GPSJoystick, it worked fine, but (stupidly) I decided to update the app. It's not a root app but it has some additional functions when installed as system app. In order to do that, I used a Magisk module called App Systemizer (terminal emulator). It worked, but the app was not performing the way I wanted it to so I decided to uninstall the app and revert to the older version.
Here is my issue, I uninstall the app but there are empty folders remaining in the system/priv-app folder, and no matter what I try, I cannot delete them. I tried to use a root explorer app (several of them) but it didn't work. I tried to use the TWRP file manager, but the folders are not (for some reason) visible to it. I also tried to use adb shell but to no avail.
It's not really breaking anything, it's just annoying. The only app that doesn't work is the GPSJoystick app. I think it's because of the remaining files. Is there a way to manually delete all of the remaining files and folders? I know where they are, but simply cannot delete them.
Can anyone advise and help?
To summarise, I have 2 folders in system/priv-app that I can't delete, and need help with that.
Thank you!
EDIT:
I forgot to mention:
I'm on 9.0.12, stock recovery, rooted with Magisk 18.1
In TWRP, did you ensure to mount system before?

Yes. I can see all other folders but not the ones I want to delete.

Hmm, it may not be in the usual system/system/priv-app folder since a Magisk module systemized it. You might need to play around in some Magisk folders in the root section of your phone. Just a suggestion, I could be wrong.
Now, you see, that's why I love XDA.
I tried everything but to look at the Magisk module. So I tried uninstalling the module, and what do you know, the folders are gone. I couldn't see them in TWRP because the module was not loading then, and I could not delete it while in system because they were in use by the module.
So thank you very much, the "issue" is resolved!
Thanks again!

Huawei screen recorder missing, need APK (Huawei Nova 3i)

Hi,
The screen recorder app for my Huawei 3i somehow got uninstalled and I can't find the APK anywhere online or the Play store/App Gallary. I had someone send me their version from a P20 pro, but since they are on 9.1 and I'm on 9.0, it wasn't compatible. Could anyone please upload the 9.0 version for me so I can try to install it? I'd rather not have to do a full wipe of the phone just for this one app.
Thanks!
PS: I wasn't sure where to post this so if it's the wrong place, please let me know where I should post it!
How shall we find and extract the apk file in either Honor 20 Pro or Mate 9?
It seems that we can't get any apk for system apps without rooting device. And what's the exact file name?

The way my friend did it was to get one of those APK extracting app on the play store. There's a few of them but he used the one called APK Extractor. His device wasn't rooted and was able to get an APK from it. Could that be why it didn't work when I tried to install it? I assumed it was the different android versions.
I see. You had better have someone who has the exactly same phone model, Huawei Nova 3i, to run the APK Extractor to get that apk file for you.

If their device was not rooted, I doubt it actually extracted the app from system. It may have extracted "something" and you may have tried to install it but whatever they extracted may not have been what you actually needed.
If it did actually extract the app, it may not have installed properly because it was not installed in system, it probably got installed in data partition with your user apps. It might be that it won't work if not installed in system. Or it might be that you needed to boot into recovery and wipe the cache partition(and dalvik cache if you have TWRP) then reboot and try installing the app.
This might be because when you removed it from system, that app still had files left behind in the cache partition, these files were associated to that app as a system app but when you installed the app manually it was installed in data partition but wouldn't work with the cached files that were associated with it when it was a system app. You might need to find a way to get the app installed in system so it can work correctly with the cached files that it was associated to when it was a system app, or you need to wipe cache in recovery then install the app as a user app in data partition and reboot the device to let it rebuild the files in cache so that they are associated to the app as user app.
There may be a way to use adb to obtain a copy of the app from system to share with you and then use adb to install the app in system.
