I wonder if this root security patch affects those of us with unlocked bootloaders? (Probably not)
Also I hope the full image is released soon...

I got the same update notification and installed it. Motorola support has NO CLUE what this update is about. What is it?
I just got the notification too. I'm running a Chilean provider (Movistar) ROM, but the update just says 'en.CL'. I unlocked my bootloader a long time ago though via Motorola code IIRC, and to tell the truth I don't remember what precautions to take when receiving an OTA.

Did you lose root after updating? Did you have to 'put bloatware back in' like the sticky says?
No my phone was not rooted
Anyway if bootloader was unlocked so you also can easily downgrade your moto x with 21.7 firmware
But be carefully
Backup your data first
I don't backup any data even contacts and update it [emoji2] and i m lucky

I don't follow... How is it that your bootloader is unlocked, but you are unable to root?
You can still flash a system app and root that way, correct?
I am updating from 222.26.7.ghost_att.ATT.en.US and the zip includes several system library updates and a new modem firmware.
I have an unlocked bootloader and a rooted phone, so to install:
* Boot to recovery (TWRP) and make a backup copy of update zip (/cache/Blur_Version.222.26.7.ghost_att.ATT.en.US.zip) at /sdcard (aka /data/media/0).
* Flash system and recovery to stock firmware in bootloader
* Install the update using stock recovery
* Reflash TWRP and reinstall SuperSU and Xposed

Shabby means his phone was not rooted prior to applying the update, not he lost root or was unable to root.
I would happily take it if it means better battery life root is useless in its current state.
Just got the update notification on the XT1060.
I'm trying to learn how to root this thing, as I've never done so on an Android device. Should I hold off on updating this until after I've rooted?
My brother's wife got this update and now her phone is not connecting to their wifi network, even after several resets and different configurations.
Hopefully the old root methods will be adapted to this update.
Please chime in if you have a similar problem or a solution.

Definitely consider rooting/unlocking your bootloader as an alternative to official releases. You just have so many more options once you've made custom roms available to yourself.
Installed in on my dev edition and haven't noticed any difference.. Probably not a significant update.

Does anybody have the stock zip for this update or know where they're usually located? I've been researching the method CrashXXL used to add root/Xposed/remove bloat, but then Moto dropped this update and I have to start from scratch.

@iscaela posted the instructions to get update.zip file in the first page read but for this you need rooted phone
Don't Ever update your rooted moto X to the latest firmware via OTA specially verizon xt1060
My friend update a rooted xt1060 via OTA to the latest firmware and now his phone doesn't booted anymore Stuck on fastboot with an error of system failure
Now no firmware available right also fail to downgrade waiting for new update firmware
another thing this update have only SECURITY PATCH not any changing but i think patched the root privileges

You also need an unlocked bootloader, which I don't have.

NOTE: All 2011 Xperia firmwares EXCEPT build .62 can now be rooted directly using DooMLoRD's zergRush:
I repeat: THIS firmware CANNOT be rooted UNLESS you have an UNLOCKED bootloader and downgrade the kernel.
For UNLOCKED bootloaders ONLY:
DOWNLOAD: http://ul.to/tz3hl0yu/Recovery.rar
Steps:
Flash FTF via Flashtool.
Enter recovery with the command: fastboot boot recoveryARC.img
A recovery menu will appear in your phone.
Sets scripts assets: ENABLED
Flash RootXperia.zip via recovery. You have to copy RootXperia.zip to the SD card previously.
Reboot device.
If your bootloader is LOCKED:
Flash the previous LT15a .42 build here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1491066
Root using SuperOneClick or ZergRush.
Update over the air.
This FlashTool file works on ANY Xperia arc (LT15a/i).
Your arc does NOT have to be rooted.
Your arc does NOT have to be bootloader unlocked (except for root).
This does NOT re-lock a SIM unlocked phone (unlocking is ONCE and PERMANENT).
This does NOT unlock your bootloader.
This WILL wipe your phone & root. Backup first.
You MUST have BOTH PC Companion and Update Service installed. MIRROR: http://jp1.ca/androidstuff

Please do NOT mirror files.
Also confirmed using TrevE's Logger Test App that this firmware does NOT contain the privacy invading rookit by Carrier IQ.
Thank for the new ROM,
Q: What are the differences between NAM ROM and other ROMs (e.g. Global)?
Q: Is there a HOPE that this ROM will be rooted some day for Locked BL?
Q: Is there a big difference between .42 and .62?
Thanks a lot in advance.

All the generic ROMs are pretty similar. Some may have additional languages or applications specific to the region (but not carrier apps). Frankly, it doesn't really matter. I've used Nordic, Hong Kong and UK ROMs all without issue.
As for rooting, it's CLEARLY STATED in the description:

As for the differences, I haven't seen any discernible, visible difference. Some users have reported better battery life, less lag, etc.
I just received a notification that this update is available OTA on my .42. I, however, "freezed" some system apps. If I restore those apps (I didn't do any other internal changes) will OTA work? or is there still a risk of "bricking" a phone so that i will have to factory reset it?
THANKS!
\\edit: took the risk, update was smooth (and surprisingly fast!)
\\edit2: never mind, the reason it wsa so "smooth and fast" was that update failed. Any idea how to make it work?

As stated multiple times: Update OVER-THE-AIR... (NOT through PC Companion...)
You have to have a SIM card in. You then force an update via Settings / About.

May be I was not clear. SORRY
At first, I flash .42 from the above link. I followed your instructions. I rooted the phone then updated over the air. The update was downloaded to my mobile. I pressed Install. The phone restarted but No update to .62!!!. Exactly same as matus201.
Then, I tried another way, I update through pc. the update works very well BUT it cant be rooted.
Any suggestion.
I know that usually when OTA fails, it's because some system apps were removed / modified. But if nothing was modified (as in your case, dajj) i don't know what the problem is.
@Dajj: can you try if OTA works if you don't root .42?
If I use OTA update, will it wipe user data?
no it won't.

I was on 22.11.6 rooted with TWRP. I just unrooted through the latest SuperSU, flashed stock Lollipop recovery from graffitixnyc's website, and the update installed without issue. So far I haven't noticed any additional settings or anything, so I presume this is primarily a bugfix release. I suppose we'll see whether battery drain or some of the more minor bugs have been addressed.

Did you flash back the stock boot of .6 ? Because chainfire's custom kernel image would inject something to modify the kernel, OTA may fail when verifying stock kernel files.

That seems quite likely. I only rooted it a few days ago because I wanted to restore something with TiBu but I had left it unrooted for a few weeks after upgrading to Lollipop.
Could someone clarify what this update exactly is? Is it an update from .6 Lollipop, giving it higher version number? I'm just wondering why this thread is so relatively small...

I believe it's supposed to be bug fixes. Possibly for the background apps closing and memory leak issues a lot of people have reported.
New 22.21.25 update posted here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g-2014/general/ota-moto-g-2014-xt1064-v22-21-25-en-5-0-t2978653
Just got another OTA update. No change log on the update screen. New kernel compiled on November 27.
I don't have root to pull the update from cache since my display has issues that I plan on getting a warranty replacement for
Still need someone to use ADB and grab the OTA for this. My wife's phone is not an option right now...

Thanks for the reply! But is there a simpler way? Maybe a way to flash it via fastboot? Because root doesn't seem to play too well with my device. Keeps getting bootlooped and i know it's supposed to bootloop with the recent versions of SuperSU but it just doesn't wanna boot up.
Assuming the modified boot image for Root on 22.11.6 will not work with the update, and also assuming the boot.img will be overwritten with the update..loosing Root..
So we will be at the mercy of someone compiling a new boot.img.?

I found that flashing SuperSU caused a bootloop as well and was about to give up. But then I did it one last time and wiped cache in TWRP after flashing it. That time it worked!
The method I linked to get stock recovery back requires root.
If you can find a download of stock recovery from some random website, you can flash stock recovery through fastboot with fastboot flash recovery nameoffile.img

Not sure if you know about it, but your phone is basically showpiece from showrooms or shops, that's the X in your version number. This kind of phones are not intended to be sold for customers.
You will never got more updates as you already have, so your only option is to flash it manually.
Bootloop problem is not dependant on software version. It doesn't matter if you have 5.1 or 6.0.

Do you have an accurate source to backup your wild claims?
My EU (UK) H815 v20d-EUR-XX is currently downloading the update.
No need for a manual flash and my device certainly was not a store demo model.
Hello,
My G4 is unlocked and ROOTED and the update is available and in downloading atm.
There are something I should to know about the fact that my smartphone ROOTED evening before applying the update?
Could this affect my G4?
Thank you! =D

Sure,
We are not talking about the same thing.
Look again, and maybe twice at his version number: It's is VX10c-EUR-XX
I'm not talking about XX, but about the first "X"... see?
Sure, your device is the same as mine v20d-EUR-XX which is a retail model, but this is not the case for VX10C-EUR-XX which is unfortunately a demo model
Ok, finally, it seems that I can't update automatically with a G4 ROOTED.
When I launch the update this message pop "phone restarting"
Then boot directly on TWRP... (>_<)
So obviously I can't execute this update automatically... :'(

Off you can't. You have another recovery. Use LG UP and flash it. Easier can't be. Note you will lose root and the recovery.

Me too same model. I don't know what they're talking about. Store models can't even make calls and this deters people from trying to steal them.

Same. Luckily, they seem to have deleted the update so you need to redownload. At least we don't have 500MB lurking somewhere.

Go to thread about the Portugal update and download the KDZ from there. Any link from that thread is the international H815 update. Don't worry about countries and shenanigans is the same firmware for all. V20g-EUR-XX. Install LG UP on your PC. First the DLL then the program. Place the KDZ in your LG UP install directory (Crogram Files (x86)/LG Electronics/LGUP/model/8994). Put your phone in download mode. (With phone turned off press Volume UP and with it press plug in the USB cable). Click refurbished option for a complete wipe and clean flash. Before all this make a backup. You can also select upgrade option to avoid wipe but I always recommend a clean flash. Read the according threads in XDA for further information if you need.
It seems the h818p will not be updated(yet)?
@src151 thanks for the info. I didn't knew that demo phones can have the GSM module. At least I got it at a very good price
I will upgrade manually then.
Hi guys, i just received my new prime exclusive moto g 4th, once i turned on my devices an update appears so i installed it (OTA), i remember there was something in the name like MPJ24.139-64, once it finished updating i wanted to remove the ads following this tutorial MOTO G 4th Gen How to Remove the Amazon Lock Screen Ads and Bloat Ware . i did it all exactly as it is on the post. now my device can't start and i am not able to install the stock firmware cause all the stock rom versions available are actually lower that the installed on my phone and i think i can't downgrade because of the locked bootloader and it seems to be unlockable .
also it says on the recovery mode the next legancy: WE HAVE DETECTED AN ATTEMPT TO FLASH UNAUTHORIZED SW ON YOUR DEVICE. CONTACT CUSTOMER SERVICE FOR ASSISTANCE.

I think flashing S/W posted on Motorola site should bring your phone back to life.
See the thread - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=68502532&postcount=381 for the link to the same.

I would still give it a try as there is nothing to loose.
Or contact Motorola customer care to see what they say.

Please read the thread in http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-g4/how-to/update-9-1-16-t3453726
It looks like somehow the firmware for the Indian XT1624 was put on your device. As far as I know, no one has been able to install XT1625 firmware on their device after installing the firmware for the XT1624.

After a little research, it does appear that an OTA was released for the AMZ XT1625. Sorry, I can't think of anything else that hasn't already been suggested.
It seems Moto has changed their site and updated the s/w it now shows XT1625.
I am currently downloading from motorola right now. I am also making a backup like normal. I will let you know if it works for the XT1625 as mine is retail US.
OK I downloaded and flashed it. While it came to the July 1 security update build still said -49. There was no Amazon ad crap and I got a system UI fc and retail something fc. Beyond that it was working just fine after about 5 mins.
the problem is that on mine phone the bootloader is unlockable

yes i have

Have you tried unlocking the bootloader? I know you have an Amazon model but it doesn't hurt to try.

yes i have tried and it says that my device is no eligible for bootloader unlocking

Mine is booting up now, so far the same results as you. Although, I couldn't relock the bootloader. Could you?
EDIT: Trying a factory reset to see if those FCs get fixed....
EDIT2: They don't get fixed with a factory reset. Restarting it FCs File Manager. Restarting a 3rd time, it's fine. Weird

Looks like QuadRooter got fixed. Used the CheckPoint scanner to check. I'll take a security update even without updating the build number lol

I never tried to relock the bootloader. I still have a few more things to test before I will truly be happy lol.
stkpxl said:
Well it turns out you can't downgrade after flashing this. I tried flashing the previous firmware and got an error. I went ahead and nuked it all and put a build of CM13 on. Bonus for me is that I got received calls to work for once. So I'm fairly happy bow.

I restored my backup. I didn't try to downgrade. I will try that tomorrow.
I reflashed the moto firmware from moto website. Tried to downgrade and got an error myself. However I did have the factory -48 firmware. I don't remember where I got it from so sorry I cannot link it. I was able to flash twrp and wiped all data then flashed -48. I instantly received software update after I finished the normal setup. It updated to build number MPJ24.139-64. As soon as everything finishes reinstalling on my XT1625 I will post a screenshot.
Okay I found it again. Hope this will help out. Also this is only for Retail US. I do not think that it will work for AMZ
Firmware That I flashed. http://www.filefactory.com/file/3t2...PJ24.139-48_cid50_subsidy-DEFAULT_CFC.xml.zip
im in the same situation with a soft bricked, bootloder locked, amazon g4. and i would like to try to update with a zip file of the update if there is one to be found somewhere.
