Moto X Play does not support Doze...? - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I am opening this thread to talk about the fact that one of the core features of Android Marshmallow is missing from our Moto X Play.
What is Doze?
It's an optimization in terms of battery consumption that let you save a lot of battery if you are not using the phone. It does not work if you have it in your pocket, but placing it on a desk while working or studying, makes Doze active.

Doze and Moto X Play
When Android 6.0 arrived on Moto X Play I noticed that Doze was not mentioned in the update's changelog, but I did not mind about it even if someone did and opened threads about this on other sites. Yesterday, I found a tool on XDA that checks if your device is suitable for Doze, analyzing Sensor Support, Google Play Services Support and Doze Config Flag. The result? Sensor Support on Moto X Play is missing.
Why? Maybe Doze needs gyroscope to work, otherwise I don't know the reason of this lack of support.

Ignore the "sensor" flag, doze works as it should on my stock unrooted X Play, 6.0 and 6.0.1, check it in GSam Battery Monitor etc.
Take it off charge at 01:00 then leave it untouched till 07:00 say, then check it with GSam.
Note, doze does *not* work when the phone is on charge, this is by design.

this guy's screenshot probably a proof of doze working - https://www.instagram.com/p/BBN7HJRCZV4/

It shouldn't work according to the page from Google:
https://source.android.com/devices/tech/power/mgmt.html#doze-reqs
Doze support requires the following:
Device implements the significant motion detector (SMD) APIs in the Sensor HAL. Devices that do not implement these APIs cannot support Doze.
Device has a cloud messaging service, such as Google Cloud Messaging (GCM). This enables the device to know when to wake from Doze.
And as far as my user experience go. Lollipop was superior compared to Marshmallow on battery usage on my device.

Maybe the XDA tool gives an incorrect reading?
Doze works on my XT1562, confirmed.

Why not use greenify and enable "aggressive doze" and leave it on the table for a few minutes. You will see a big Zzzz when you pick up the phone and the time "doze" was activated. It works fine.
Edit:
You can also choose which apps you want to doze in the battery optimization screen. Settings>battery. Standard all apps are optimized for battery optimization (doze),but you can also disable some apps if it doesn't work well with doze.

I use Greenify's aggressive doze too and I always see a flat graph whenever I'm not using the phone for a few hours.

I did an experiment with my moto x play on stock 6.0.1. Switched my sim card to moto E 2015 and for a day or two i had my mxp connected to wi fi only - but i didn't touched it The graph showed about 18 days of stanbytime - no active so i believe that doze is present

Doze works on Moto X Play, don't believe the app

kernel auditior says my phone was in deep sleep 60% of the time.
it doesn't Matter doze is there or not. even if it isn't there still battery is good enough.

Did you change governor or kernel? Because on my MXP it never showed deepsleep for the CPU until I changed the governor to ondemand. On the interactive governor and stock kernel I never managed to get to deep sleep.
Also on everything stock I'VE NEVER SAW FLAT LINE overnight discharge is ~11%

I guess greenify advanced doze with xposed works, I get 2-3%dran over night. stock kernel and interactive governor. although i don't have fb and other location apps, the only app I use 90% time is browser and WhatsApp and have disabled and removed most of Google BS.
still don't know why this app says MXP doesn't support doze, when it clearly does doze. maybe a glitch.

if Doze works you should see something like this

I have a mxp with 6.0.1 cm lux, squid kernel and the dev says doze does not work and only android n will support it. I also don't have doze, and never did.

It seems doze is not enabled in some ROMs.

Squid2 says it doesn't work on our device because the Motorola's sensor HAL doesn't provide a significant motion sensor.

It's impossible because our device doesn't support Doze.
1. Our phone doesn't support the requirement of Doze.
2. The devs say it don't work.
3. The app confirms it.
I don't know why it says in the screenshot that Doze was on.

Battery saving tips

I am gonna copy paste a thread I made for the t989 s2. It's all universal advice.
Yes... Root is required for a lot of this.
A nandroid backup first is a good idea.
Lots of this is common knowledge, but maybe not to some newer Android users.... So here it is.
About the only moto x specific thing I can add is freeze all that motorola stuff. Even the com.motorola stuff. If you really want active display.... Keep it, I did. I went a few days without touch less control and now it's back on. Gonna see if my battery gets effected. If you're not sure what some of this com. Motorola stuff is, you can google it.
So.....2 things I personally think work best to solve battery draining issues.
1. GSAM from playstore. It will tell you what apps are draining your battery...the top of the app list will be your main culprits. Then you need to find out why? You can check what apps are waking your phone and for how long. Gsam can tell you a lot if you play around with it and see what it can show you.
2. Cpuspy, also from play store. A simple yet easy way to see if your phone is deep sleeping. Deep sleep should pretty much be your total up time....minus screen on time. Roughly. If it isn't, or you have no deep sleep time.....back to gsam to find out why.
Once you narrow down the app culprits ....then you can search on why.
One last huge thing I personally have done for a long time now....reboot after you unplug from charger. Every single time. This used to be a fix for not getting deep sleep....and I think it still is a good practice. (This doesn't really seem necessary on my X)
That's it. 2 apps and you can post your battery draining questions with a lot more info than simply saying..."hey....my battery life sucks."
Cause 9.5 times out of 10.....it has nothing to do with the rom you are using. Usually anyway.
Sent from my Moto X cell phone telephone...
A couple other things.
Comparing our total battery time with each other is pointless and meaningless. You can drain your phone from 100 to zero in 3 hours playing certain games, or it can last 30 hours cause you barely touched it. The only reasonable comparison is screen on time. Period. Tho it can alter greatly as well. 3 hours screen time on a 3d game, or 7 hours watching movies. 5 or more mostly texting and browsing......but still, its a better way to compare.
Gps is a battery destroyer. Some people leave it on...and certain apps will use it whenever you open them.
Screen brightness is a huge factor.
Task killers usually do more harm than good. Personally I only use greenify, and only for apps I know drain batteries a lot. Like maps. If maps is part of the rom....I convert it to a user app with titanium backup and greenify it. Canada's weather network app is a battery hog. Greenify. Basically anything that tops my list with more than 10 percent in gsam gets greenified. My wife used to use Facebook app....I got her using the browser. The app sucked her battery and data sometimes. No....no notification now, but she's on it a lot....her eyeballs are her notification.
Juice defender....great for very light users....a battery waster for medium to heavy users. Turning wifi and data on and off 200 times a day will kill more battery than it saves. Ever see the amount of times juice defender wakes your phone? LOL. I got as high as 1000 before I deleted it. Gsam told me that!

And this screen shot is my credentials. Lol
I have always got good battery life on any phone or rom... Cause it's my number one concern and all my attention goes to good battery life before anything else. It's also why I got the moto x over the G2..... I saw the battery life that some Moto X users were getting and it is right up there with average G2 battery life times. And I think the moto x is the better built phone.
Good luck!!

GSAM won't work on 4.4 without a helper app, which requires root. Android removed the ability to see battery stats without root. I love GSAM and installed the root helper.
As for location services, I use App Ops (and now App Opps X that I'm rooted) to remove the location privileges for certain apps as I do leave my GPS enabled at all times and monitor what apps actually use it. I'm fine with ones that poll it like once an hour or something, but I had an app that used about 45 minutes of GPS lock when I hadn't even run the app since reboot. I disabled location access for that app with App Ops and it's fine now.
I also have a root app called Disable Service which lets you stop services for a given user or system app.
All of these things I described do require root. Although App Ops can be used without root, it can do more with it.

I leave high accuracy GPS on all the time, and have done so with all phones I've had with that option. I checked battery life with it enabled and with GPS off unless needed, and there was no appreciable change in battery life by turning GPS off. I haven't tested this on newer phones, but it was this way with my Fascinate. Considering Android does much better with managing sensors now, hardware has improved greatly, and the Fascinate was one of the worse phones for GPS ever, if a battery issue was going to happen, that was the phone to have it with.

I also leave my GPS toggled "on" all the time (I use Power Control widget). It is actually only in use when it shows the GPS icon in the notification area, and I only look into it when it's on and I'm not using a location based app. If I find a problem I remove that app or disable the location services as mentioned in my previous post in this thread.
No real difference for me on battery life either, unless there is an offending app going crazy.
I'm willing to bet that on 4.4 with Google apps being even more integrated in the OS... That location services will shave at least some noticeable Battery life. Maybe not with an app as mentioned above, where you have control over what used gps. I'm on 4.2.2, but I'd be curious to see screen shots on 4.4...or even 4.2.2, of a full battery cycle with location services on.... And one off.
I know on my s2, if I forgot and left Gps on a while, it would eat my battery at least a 3rd quicker. Perhaps I had an app that abused gps, but it was pretty ugly anyway. Lol

Apparently if your on 4.4....you have to be rooted.
Kinda seems google is slowly trying to be like iPhone... And not let you do stuff unless you are rooted. Lol
But you should be around or over 80 percent deep sleep. If not.... You have an issue. And 13 percent.... You have a big issue.

The best battery tip would be to download GravityBox and enabling "Solid Black Display". Being that the screen is AMOLED, you're saving loads of battery without sacrificing anything.

If you read the differences between 4.3 and 4.4, you'll notice what it is for. Google implemented the change to improve location accuracy with minimal effects on the battery. From my experience, while it looks like wifi is on all the time, it doesn't really do anything to battery life, but vastly improves location accuracy and lock time. So far, I've done next to nothing suggested in this thread, and I'm still coming home from work with about the same battery % remaining as I did on my Note 2. The best part is that my phone is probably doing more to affect battery life, but actually using less.
One thing I didn't say in my opening posts was that if someone is having trouble with battery life.... Do all this stuff... Then one at a time bring back things you miss... If one of them impacts your battery more than you care for.... You'll know what app or feature it is.
Everyone has different battery expectations and needs.... Some of my suggestions may seem too extreme for some people, or not at all for others.
I do everything I posted. I personally want every extra minute of screen time I can get.... But that's just me. Everyone has their own needs. I still enjoy my phone immensely... And use the functions I want for myself.... And see 5 to 6 hour screen times every charge. If some of my cuts are too much for some... That's totally understandable.
Btw.... I don't care for touch less control.... But with it on.... I pretty much lose one hour screen time. Luckily it's not a feature I care about... So it's off. Just an FYI.

Android System issue?

ive been looking all around, with no solution so far, but the issue im having is that the battery stats show my phones having android system at 35% most of the time and android OS following it around 15-20%
is this an issue with marshmallow or samsung? I havent even rooted the phone, its simple the way it was since first turning it on.
I installed package disabler and took out knox and other things, but still no change...so im a bit lost

I initially had this issue as well. I got it down to under 20% by doing the following:
1. No diagnostic reporting to Samsung
2. No feedback/reporting to Google
3. Turn off sync & turn it on manually only when needed (I use a macro app to automate this, called MacroDroid)

Sent from my SM-G935P using Tapatalk
Remember that all the battery usage percentages MUST add up to 100%. The less other apps and processes are using battery, the higher the percentage used by Android system and the OS is going to be. If you let your phone sit unused for 3 or 4 days, those two things would probably total 70 or 80%, just because nothing else is using battery.
Don't worry about the percentage system is using. Look at your overall battery life. If that's good, then don't sweat the small stuff.

It's not mentioned explicitly in the changelog. But AT&T GS7E users have reported battery life improvements, just like the T-Mobile guys.

Are you guys having Android System battery issues still?
To pinpoint which service within Android System is causing the most wakelocks without Root, you can use this app (Wakelock Detector Lite) & adb to view the stats.
Here's the link to the Play Store app.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.uzumapps.wakelockdetector.noroot
After you install the app, go into Settings > Developer options & turn on USB Debugging.
Then connect your phone to your PC, open adb, and type:
adb devices
Then
adb tcpip 5555
Now you can view your wakelock stats without root!
My number one wakelock within Android System is GpsLocationProvider_ex. It prevents my phone from deep sleep & Doze.
The only workaround is to turn off GPS until needed.
Please share your findings.

I got much better results yesterday.
17 hrs off the charger & SOT of 4 hrs & 42 mins.
GpsLocationProvider_ex wakelock of only 3 mins & 51 seconds using the GPS+WiFi+Mobile location setting.
My settings:
-Firmware version PD3 (Sprint GS7E)
-auto brightness
-sync off
-Location = GPS+WiFi+Mobile
-WiFi & Mobile data always toggled on
-Bluetooth always on & connected to Gear S2 3G
-No power-saving mode
-Google Now & Now on Tap on
-Push apps running: Kakaotalk, Slice, Pushbullet
-140 apps installed
Before the refresh, this was the kind of crazy GPS wakelocks I was getting:
Finished yesterday with over 6 hrs of SOT.

Yes, those apps only refresh automatically when I open them which is how I like it. I don't like getting pestered with constant notifications. And I don't use Facebook.
I use macro apps to automatically turn on Sync when it's on the charger & shut off when taken off the charger.

I use Temasek as my rom with greenify, amplify, kernel audiotor , appopsxposed and tasker.
On custom kernel Clarity r26 (permissive)
My brightness is set to 12 when I am indoor or after 5 pm. From 10 am to 5 pm I have automated brightness to 15 when outdoor.
Once my screen goes off wifi or data is turned off. My phone goes to Airplane mode from 12 am to 7 am. Once I am home wifi is turned on and data service is disabled.
I am sure most around here knows how to use amplify and greenify so I wont go about explaining the same.
With appopsxposed I have disabled all the location permissions of all the apps including play services except tasker as I dont use them.
In the next post I will post my kernel settings. I have tried and tested this multiple times and the results have been more or less same.

OMG are you serious ? This works on a depleted battery as well ? You can get 10 hours of SOT with a newer battery. And use Kernel audiutor and make sure you are using clarity r26 with permissive.

GREATEST battery life on Android O beta

I just wanted to put this out there. I have O beta installed with latest update, no root, bootloader locked, DNS66 app for adblocking and always on vpn, greenify (whatever it can do without root and jumping through adb hoops), stock launcher and I have never ever ever had such a great standby battery life. In EX kernel managers battery monitor, I see < 1 % per hour screen off battery drain consistently where I have not been able to go below 2.2% with any, (I say any and I have tried all) rom+kernel combination on 7.1.x.
This is GREAT!! I have never been happier with any stock rom ever.
EDIT: I would like to add that I have LG Urbane watch connected with phone all the time so bluetooth is on all the time but I bluetooth scanning is disabled (in location improvement, wifi scanning is still on). Battery optimizations for android wear is disabled.

Is it possible you can take a screenshot of your battery stats from settings so some of us that like visuals can see? What is your screen on time like?
That's interesting, cause my battery life and performance have both dropped significantly for me on O compared to Nougat
It's worse on O, though pretty great for beta. I've got up to 5h of SOT.

Best ever is 7h on PN and Frank kernel.
Stock usually 5h so the O isn't too far off. Maybe very slightly for me. It can only improve from here I think.

7h is unheard of. were you on battery saver mode the entire time?
I can get over 6h on a fully stock pixel, locked bootloader and all. I would say the majority of my time is on wifi. O beta seems to work well but my understanding from a community post by Google, don't have the link anymore, is you need beta Google play services installed as well to get O's battery benefits. I can't say that it makes more of a difference for me in comparison to avoiding notorious apps which hinder performance. I had similar battery life on N.

My battery life on O was horrendous. We're talking night and day. I run stock with not more than 20 or so apps. Something is really really wrong with O. I've gone back and forth on the beta twice with the same results.
I use the beta ROM about one week and it is very very good , also battery very good

I'm getting really nice batterylife with 8.0, which is awesome. It is now more in line with my average battery life with other devices like the HTC 10 and such. This however is fine to me as long as it's not dying by 1-2PM for me haha

I am completely stock, just updated today. I turned off background operation using the battery manager built in to Android to limit apps like Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, Reddit, Chrooma Keyboard, etc.
For my usage my phone wouldn't last very long. I would probably hit 50% with an hour of screen on time. Now I'm at an hour and 54 minutes with 54% left. I've been off the charger since around 11AM, and it's currently 4PM so I'm definitely gonna have to see where it goes from here. When I leave work the real concern is heat when playing music or podcasts over Bluetooth, for whatever reason my phone was getting really hot when I used Bluetooth so I'll see how that is when I leave work today.

"DNS66 app for adblocking and always on vpn"....slightly confused by this..did you mean that you get privacy features like other VPN providers? AFAIK as I know DNS66 is only a local VPN and does not provide security/privacy features

I have a S10+ Exynos variant which has higher battery drainage than the phones I had before. I made tests and errors on all possibilities, even tried disabling all relevant features that may cause wakelocks, but I couldn't put my phone into deep sleep. With connections off at night, my battery lose 1% per hour. This result is better than phones without deep sleep, but worse than any other phone, so I'm not sure whether it's actually in deep sleep or not. Maybe the existing apps don't show correctly with the new CPU? Can anyone with Snapdragon variant check this?

Its staggering we're still getting 5 or 6h SOT with this. Imagine the battery WITH actual deep sleep.

4 days. My battery yesterday was fantastic. 7h SOT. Today not so much. But it's still what I'd consider pretty good, and perhaps it's a testament to the sheer brute force of the S10 that it can get this amount of endurance even with the CPU never deep sleeping. I will look forward to when we can fix this.

I lost my patience and factory reset. Deep sleep is now working perfectly. Slept for 6h, 94% deep sleep. Went to bed with 96% wake up with 93.
For a reference my friend's Exynos S10+ also has a similar issue. A little better, around 30% deep sleep, but not nearly where it should be either.

Fixed by adding specific app to Sleeping Apps in device care. I think Samsung should really think about adding these abnormal apps to blacklist automatically.

No, I did not, and I don't recommand you to do so since apprantly is personal application related. But I do recommand to use Brevent, to stop apps running in the background with just two simple tap, helps you to identify the rogue apps.

I see. Will definetly try resseting my phone once i got it if it has problems with deep sleep as @ab_cd posted the result seems better.
At last I solved this. I just factory reset my phone and now it has deep sleep. I guess because I used Smart Switch and some setttings were transferred to the new phone improperly.

same deep sleep issue but solved.
samsung galaxy s10 plus. Battery drain with cpu not going to deep sleep issue.
i had the same issue.
what i did was - settings - general - reset all the 3 options.
1. network reset
2.accessibility reset
3. reset settings.
problem solved.
no need for factory reset.
then redid all settings as per my liking
aod on, wifi, bt, location on.
using almost all useful features and battery life is awesome.
pls do try and let know if the issue resolved or not.
