My girlfriend has owned a Moto X Style for 3 months, which she was unfortunate to drop into the ground outside. It had the original bumper that came with the phone and a tempered glass screen protector on, so there were no visible damage to the phone. As it was slight rainy, the phone got a little wet and when she picked it up, there was already a little water behind the screen, and she turned it off and dried it off and let it sit in rice for about 19 hours to get the moist out. After 19 hours she tried to use it and it looked fine as all the water was gone, but about 1-1,5cm of the screen now does not register touch.
The phone was only on the ground about 20 seconds, so is it covered by the warranty?
The phone does have that nano-coating that is supposed to protect it from water spray.. I believe dropping your phone into the ground once is considered normal wear and tear, or am I wrong?
Hard telling what will happen, I have had zero luck with Moto warranty work. My wife was told 5 weeks for her phone to be replaced on a warranty claim and my moto 360 was denied warranty work for blue spots on the led. So, my guess is if none of the moisture detectors/stickers if it has them are smeared then you might do okay just telling them it stopped working. Don't tell them about the water or the drop. You can see what happens, but moto warranty center in U.S. is now being looked at for a class action lawsuit due to terrible warranty work. I am never buying moto again because of this.

Dropping, especially in water is not normal wear.

You can try. I've owned 2 moto x phones (1st gen and style) and both have been through far worse situations with no damage to screen. It looks like that fall must've damaged her screen somehow. I don't think this is covered under warranty.
No damage, as a result from water or drops, is covered under the standard warranty. If you have insurance, then you can file a claim. If you wish to try and do a warranty claim, be prepared for it to be denied should any evidence show water damage internally. State it quit working and leave it at that.

Thank you all for answers. I have been in contact with Motorola customer service and the warranty does not cover it. They sent me details for a repair shop in my country.
My only chance now is my insurance, which takes for ever to process..
I am considering to buy a new screen + digitizer and change it myself as it does not cost too much and it is relatively easy. My only concern is that the phone stops working in the long haul because it is impossible to know how much was damaged by the water.. The phone is usable and is in use now, and the only problem is the touch still.. Is it worth a try?
If I send it in for repairs they may probably say it's unrepairable because I believe there are sensors in the phone that detect water damage, and I will have to pay for them to ship it back unrepaired...
If you have insurance on your phone you should read through it to see what is covered. Most cover water damage and cracked screens (lost/stolen usually not). If water damage is covered, most insurance companies will either give you a reconditioned model or in select few cases give money to replace it. If you are really lucky you will get a new one.
This is assuming you took out insurance specifically on your phone. If you are referring to homeowners or renters insurance, you will have to check your policy. Many cover the phone as a result of "acts of nature" or theft/robbery but may not cover accidents of your own doing.

I ended up buying a new screen with the frame and I changed it. It was pretty straightforward as I followed some youtube guides. Phone works perfectly now. I recommend that you buy the new screeen with the frame and everything because it's a real pain to change without the frame.

My phone is a couple of weeks old. Last night while sleeping my phone fell on the floor (2 feet distance) and landed on the front side resulting in a hairline crack. The crack is noticeable when on a white background.
My question is am i elegible to get my phone or screen replaced by Google ? How dos the replacement/repair procedure work ?

Usually what companies consider cosmetic damage or accidental damage won't be covered by warranty, but you can try giving Google's support a call see if you can talk somebody into giving you an RMA.
What happened was due to your carelessness. Google isnt responsible for accidental damage. It has nothing to do with the way the phone was built. Hence, no free replacement for you. However, you could come clean and see what they could do.
Otherwise check out ebay for nexus 4 digitizers. They are going for about 150 now.

So I've lately had one issue with my GS4, it shows signs of the "Loss of Service" bug that the GS2 was having for a while. It randomly drops calls and service completely, sometimes will bounce back to service but sometimes it locks into No Service mode and drains the battery; only fix is to enable and then disable airplane mode. So anyway, I've tried everything to fix it and Sprint wont give me a new phone, and I didn't want to take a refurb since I've had it for only 2 months. The guy at the store usually does everything he can for me, but I understand his hands are tied and can't issue a new phone on the spot, even though it has consistent issues.
Soooo getting to the punch line here, sorry for the backstory. In troubleshooting the phone, we had the battery out and the tech had the phone apart, noticing that the water stickers have been activated. Now I would be honest if I had submerged the phone or gotten it wet in any way, but I truly have not. The only thing I can think of is that my phone is ALWAYS encased in it's Otterbox Defender case, and 80% of the time it's in my pocket. I do tree work, and I kid you not I am drenched in sweat all day every day. Is it possible that the water stickers activated from the sweat and condensation trapped in the case and phone? I usually have to take my case apart to wipe the moisture from in between the cases screen protector and phone. Samsung probably wont issue me a new phone under their warranty now (which was my only option for a NEW phone at this point)...Any input on the possibilities and way to prove it? Also, there is 0 corrosion on the phone, we inspected it very thoroughly. Any help is appreciated, cheers!
Yes humidity or condensation can definitely trigger the water damage sticker. As for what you should do, don't you have insurance, file a claim.

Idk what insurance you have. But it's better than $500-$650. Put it in a bag of rice for a day or two. With the cover off and the battery out. It will get the moisture out.

Apple recently lost a lawsuit for refusing to repair phones that had the faulty sensors which would/could change color due to humidity alone.

Insurance claim is $150.
It is known by the industry the the liquid indicators may at times be too sensitive and are sometimes put it poor locations.
Even with knowing this, it is an easy excuse to not replace your unit. All providers do it.

You could, depending on where you live, claim high humidity as the culprit. In the southern states, where it's usually 70%+ humidity all the time, overly sensitive stickers could be triggered. Where I live, it's usually 80 plus every day. I just checked weather bug now, and at 3am where I live, it's 95% humidity and no rain nearby.
Very good point about the humidity also. I live in rural PA and it does tend to get incredibly humid in the spring and summer. Between the humidity, and having my phone in the pocket of my sweaty carhartt pants encased in an otterbox, I can imagine the moisture would really collect in there. The true test will be getting a new battery and checking it periodically to see if that sticker activates eventually. I will also check the phone sticker in a few weeks, seeing as I went the refurb route to get a new phone. Since getting a brand new one wasn't happening for me, I just did the service exchange and the water damage may have slipped the tech's mind. Now if my phone breaks 5 more times, Sprint will give me a new device, so we'll see what happens. I appreciate all the input, hopefully other people don't have this issue!
Thought id post here about my Xperia Z3 and how things went from great to worse. Bought the phone last November here in Finland and was a happy little peasant with a brand new phone. Loved the phone but quite early on I think i managed to break the back glass myself (?). I didn't drop it, it just cracked... The phone was denied warranty back then due to mechanical preassure (saying it's my own fault it cracked). Well that was no biggie as it was just the back cover and it didn't make hte usability of the phone any worse than it was. And it may as well be that I've broken it myself, not being carefull enough. Picture #1, #2, #3. Sorry for the poor quality, but as you can see there's no damage on the sides indicating it being dropped, but still it could be my own fault.
Fast forward half a year and I noticed that my phone had a yellow tint on it's display right next to the micro-usb port. I took the phone for warranty and waited a few weeks. The local service company denied warranty due to improper use of the device quoting the phone being bent, cracked rear cover and the LCD screen glue being broken. I was really surprised and I hadn't noticed the bending or the glueing being an issue. Received the pictures and it indeed was bent and the lcd screen glue was torn. Still, the phone wasn't mishandled in any way, well it did drop a few times but nothing major.

Well there's no denying those pictures. To be honest, I would have expected the phone to not bend (keep it in my front pocket) and havn't taken the phone with me to sports or anything like that. So my phone was denied warranty as all damage to the phone was not due to poor build quality but to improper usage of the device. Took the phone to my local reseller where I bought the phone for consumer complaint as I couldn't have in any way be held accountable for the LCD screen defect or the poor glue. Bending ok, mayby... but still think this is a little bit far fetched and the rear cover i can definately be held accountable for. But the screen? Really? The service center said that the phone would need to be replaced completely. Sony official response was that it's not due to build quality issues but to damage caused by improper use of the device. They stood behind the service center and device is officially out of warranty now.
Well I did order spare parts and replace the LCD screen glue myself, and the back cover was held tight but the LCD screen wasn't. I managed to almost pull out the complete screen without heating it up first. As a result the glue came off in a wierd way as seen in the picture here. I really doubt the way the screen was glued could be my fault and has to be an manufacturing error.
Anyway, this is my story with my Xperia Z3 phone. Now i'm stuck with a faulty LCD screen that has burnt yellow tint close to the micro-usb port and it's a really ****ty way to keep the phone for another 12 months or so untill it's paid off (24months payment). TL: DR: Phone denied warranty (yellow tint on LCD, LCD gluing broken, bent phone and cracked rear glass. Last two might be my fault, but the first two couldn't be. Warranty service and Sony claim i've caused all damange to phone. Can't say i agree
they are right... NO ONE would approve warranty when there is physical damage....
They always have to prove that the defect you want them to repair was caused by you. So physical damage is not always enough for them to reject a warranty repair.
In this case, however, I can easily imagine both defects being caused by you bending the phone, so I'm not that surprised they denied your claim...
Whatever. I spent ~$160 fixing my phone. Both sides glass broken and phone unusable. Under std warranty (bought through expansys-usa.com) sent to sony/texas, waited about 3 weeks (forever) and rcvd a brand new phone back. Back is once again cracked. I will say this. Unless a proper case comes out, I won't be buying any more sonys. The best hard case now is the lovemei ($35) imo. Carrying case? Maxpedition TC-2. With a lovemei case get a TC-3.
I have the Z3 since it came out, bought it right at release. Only use a soft case, always have it in my front pocket. It's with me when I ride my bike and I took pictures of the kids in the water. So far no issues, except two bright spots in the lower part of the screen. So far I've been too lazy to get it repaired/exchanged.
Same for me too. 5 months old and its the 3rd time I sent it to Sony because of warranty.
Screen cracked for no reason.
The reasons before were Bluetooth not working and battery dieing.
Definitely my last Sony.

Screen cracked for no reason, strange...maybe it is not cracked at all...maybe you have some sort of hallucination when you look at it, and it happens only to you and only when you look at it...

No front or back cracks or damage for me yet. I got mine back in March and installed tempered glass on the front which I broke the other day. The only issue I have is yellowing around the soft keys caused by me I think. Front pocket and I basically do parkour at work as a residential window cleaner I jump a lot of gates and fences everyday. To be perfectly honest I'm surprised the phone is still in 100% condition on the outside. [emoji12]

The point was that they pinned all of the damage on me and claimed I was responsible for the poor glue used with the LCD screen and the screen errors as well while I could in no way have done that damage by using the device. And I really doubt a cracked back cover and the slight bending could cause either of the problems with the screen. The idea was to share how it went down and perhaps to be of use to someone. Seems though it won’t be so let this post be buried.
Sure I’m a little bit surprised a device could even bend and thought it was just something that would happen if deliberately done. Never had that with any previous phone from any manufacturer. I will buy smaller phones next time or sturdier ones so I can keep them with me. Not saying it’s a common problem as it surely isn’t, just going to make different desisions in the future.
The centre strip of my touchscreen doesn't respond to any touch input, it's a perfectly straight strip in the middle of my phone. The glass is not broken, the phone is in great condition...
I can't reclaim on the warranty as not in the US atm, nor can I give up the phone before my warranty expires..
Same problem even in TWRP so definitely hardware related.
Any advice on a fix?

If this phone was easy to open up I'd say pop it open and make sure the digitizer ribbon cable is firmly seated on the motherboard. Long shot, but if a few pins aren't making good contact maybe you could see some behavior like you're describing.
However, with the non-removable back and the fixed battery where it is this isn't the simplest check. You need a heat gun or a hair dryer just to get it open. Maybe watch some screen replacement videos and see if you feel like you're up to taking it apart yourself.
Also, tampering with this has potential to void your warranty, assuming it is intact.
My Pure has the same exact issue except it's directly on the nav bar. It happened after it was dropped. I used gravity box to raise the nav bar height by 20% and that fixed the issue of me not being able to use the home, back, and multitask buttons. Much easier than taking the phone apart.
This happened to me so i filed a claim with squaretrade. Online, they tried to replace it with a moto x (first generation) so, i quit trying online and called in for a claim. They don't have this device so they paid me out in cash. I had to pay $70 deductible and within 7 days, i received a check for $479. Then i bought a new one with bamboo back for just under $400 with Amazon prime. Winning.
I did call a local shop and they said they could fix it for $80. But, mine was from water damage so, i didn't want to risk it having more issues later.

I have the same issue. On mine. But it's actually on the nav keys I sent it for repair but they sent it back and no repair was done . Worst things they sent it even worst now I have going touches. No crack screen or anything. Definitely not buying another Moto product

Who did you send it in to for repair? It's obviously a problem with the digitizer. It can be caused by too much pressure being applied to the screen, water damage, or trauma to the screen. A crack isn't necessary for this to happen. It can and does happen on any brand of device. I wouldn't blame the manufacturer unless they were the ones you sent it to for repair. A local shop should be able to fix it for under $100.

The LG G6 phone I purchased in may 2017 fell face first and damaged the front glass, so I sent the phone for repair and got it back somewhere in October. Three weeks later the phone suddenly switched off when it had 15% charge left and refused to charge again. So I sent the phone back for repair and just got the repair quotation.
According to the company that will be repairing the phone, the repair won't be covered by the phone warranty, as it has internal liquid damage and that I will have to pay $400.
Now I don't agree with this for a few reasons,
1. The phone never fell into the water, let alone do I remember having any water on it.
2. Even if the phone had any water on it, how could an IP68 certified phone let water go inside the internals? If it wasn't properly sealed, how could the consumer be penalized for it?
3. After the first time repair, I had used the phone close to three weeks, how could there be corrosion in that time?
Now I spoke to both the company that will be repairing and LG, the customer service agents are both useless, as they have no answers for me. So I am going to try writing some emails.
Has anybody else had this issue? And does anybody feel I am being unrealistic here?

Water resistant NOT water proof.
Barely any manufacturers cover liquid damage.
Been fixing phones for 15 years now and don't think I no any company that covers water damage.
Corrosion will happen quickly. With a drop of liquid and a current flowing through it.
Phones that are liquid resistant just have a thick sticky seal that the screen and back glass stick to really well stopping liquid getting in.
Plus all ports and holes have rubber seals inside.
Just take it apart and clean all parts with alcohol spirit cleaner. Let it dry and test phone.
