so after about a week of fooking around with winmo i almost put it back up for sale on craigslist to send it back where it came from.
could not deal with this sht anymore( freezing, overheating, battery drain in standby, sms lagging, alarm not working and tonns more annoying issues)
2 different roms( i wanted to keep stock look and features, since most of cooked roms come with their own theme)
flashed chunky rom (lite version) with 12.50 radio havent tested it alone
then loaded up FroyoStone Series - Version 1 (07-Aug-2010) android rom
loaded jmz android dual boot app.
and so far it feels like im using a totally different phone.
one thing i regret is not doing it earlier.
everything seems to be working great,i definitely am able to use this phone more than i ever did with windows loaded on it.
loaded bunch of apps to see and they all work with no problems. even when an app gives an error it is eliminated with quickness.
everything is fast
android market is ridiculous packed with all kinds of sht(how fast it filled up with apps is insane)
alot of free ones to choose from
oh and almost forgot, the apps work without crashing the system.
i ve been on this phone for last 2 hours trying to figure out the android interface and its not even warm to touch as opposed to windows even in standby its very hot.
very sad that even in its early stage its much more usable than original OS
is there a WINMO HATER thread on xda btw?
beeing a new android user there are few things i have question about.
1 is there an X button to shut down apps like windows?
because most of the apps dont even have X button in app menu.
2 why does it try to crop the wallpaper even when its exact size to fit the screen?
3 Green LED blinks, THIS IS NOT AN ISSUE. This is a diagnostic feature to see if the phone has crashed or not.
mine is not on( it was on for a while) but its still functioning, is it supposed to blink when crashed or when working normally?
4 images in general seem to be reendered with much less quality than on windows boot.
theres also an option to install it with sense, is sense responsible for processing those highrez images or is it winmo?
5 i installed the SD card auto mount app. os that good or bad app to have?
would that interfere with anything?
why don't you sell the phone on craigslist and go buy you a samsung galaxy s?
why dont you buy one for me then.
i can sell the HD2 to you if u like. so you can have a backup...
HATER still defending the crippled OS abandoned by microsoft.
if it wasnt for XDA and few other forums winmo would fall on its face long time ago.
microsoft should thank you guys for keeping their name in mobile business, because without tweakers there would be no one to use it.
galaxy screen is smaller btw and its a samsung and it doesnt have flash and its piano finish and it resembles iphone
i would go for amoled screen tho that thing is super crispy...
see now i forgot what i was gonna ask because of you.
There's nothing crippled about winmo, only the lack of intelligence by the user to actually use it properly.

Totally agree with you....winmo is the best os only if one knows how to use it properly.
Yea its not so user friendly but if you want to modify an os winmo would be on the top of the list!

First, X'ing out of a program in WM does not shut it down...it keeps running in the background. Some programs have built in shut down options, but most of the time you have to use a task manager.
Likewise, in Android, as far as I know, pressing the home key lets you exit a app but it keep running in the background unless you shut it down with an app killer. Some apps have built-in shutdown options.
Ok guys lets not turn this into a my OS is better then yours is thread. Both of them have their pluses and negs, while I use use WM for everything work related I also use Android for messing around and games so to me each has its place.
Why is this thread even here this should be in general questions...

It is here because we do not have an android general forum set up yet, But the great joshkoss has been working on trying to get it set up.
alarming is the fact that winmo is installed onto consumer phones that are meant for general public
not everyone wants to learn how to edit their registry to make a feature work
some people actually want to use the phone once in a while u know...
but in windows you can enable a program to be terminated by holding the x button

I agree with you to a degree. Winmo is better for users that know (and enjoy) how to tweak their devices (which usually isnt the average user) however it is still perfectly usable with no tweaks applied (albeit not as good as when they are). You are exagerating when you say that the phone is unuseable without tweaks because i used mine for a few weeks with no tweaks whatsoever and i am sure many others here did too and the phone was fully functional. Just because you prefer android to winmo dosent make it any better (for the record i prefer android too)
For the answer to youe x button question see here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=755504
I was never an android fan. I never used Android until yesterday. Nd even with this beta build is more stable and easier to use than winmo. First time sinnce I got this phone I didnt have to soft reset the phone for almost a day.

Not to sound funny but the 2 above posts are stating winmo is so good, yet your replies are sent from android ports??
So I've used winmo for a bit, and when I do finally (hopefully) flash android onto my phones nand, I don't even want to loose winmo, I really would like to keep winmo as well because it is a decent OS, not as terrible as many make it sound, it is usable for sure.
However, lets not kid ourselves, it's no match for android. Winmo is an aging OS, and it makes that obvious. Android just feels so seamless and so optimized for mobile devices.
kinda what i was trying to say but with many more words
anyone still use DOS?
but i was hoping to get more answers related to android questions i had and not to bring about another thread with winmo vs android.
theres no doubt android is better suited for mobile, although windows has the ability to copy delete and do many more low level operations from the phone, thats why im thinking abotu keeping this phone as well and hope that we can make a true dual boot phone so i can run a clean android boot and clean winmo boot.
I am generally new to the Android community (5 months with the Eris) but am good with technology and the like. I bought an Eris off ebay to replace my ailing BB Tour and have really enjoyed the OS overall. The hardware, on the other hand, has been a little troublesome. The phone is rooted and I have loaded several custom ROM's (mostly because I am never completely satisfied) and each one has had the same problem, which tells me that is has nothing to do with the ROM's. I have tried KF, 2 different Tazz, XTRsense, KG, and currently using Froshedyo Vanilla. My problem is that after wiping and doing a new install the phone works great. After about 2 weeks it starts lagging BAD. I have tried several autokillers and also tried without and I always get the same result. With the lag comes FC's with almost everything (facebook, launcher, etc) and pretty much becomes unuseable. The only thing that fixes it is a complete wipe and reload. I just don't want to have to do that every 1 1/2 to 2 weeks. Does anyone have any suggestions? My NE2 is mid March and while I like the Android experience the phone itself is making look at the iPhone as a real good alternative. I know the pros and cons of that but in my area I'm not sure 4g is coming soon so that is one issue I am not worried about. Any help would be appreciated.

Have you tried wiping just the cache instead of doing a data-wipe so you don't have to reload everything? Do you use alot of apps? Do you have alot of text messages on your phone...try deleting them when they get old. I always found keeping my eris "clean" by removing the old stuff and clearing the cache occasionally helped me avoid the lag after a while. Sometimes you got to think of it as a small pc rather then a phone.
Yeah, I have done just a data wipe before and it helps for maybe a day or two. I don't keep a huge amount of apps loaded because I don't like clutter and I'm not a huge texter either. When I was using an auto killer I didn't ever really not that I ran lower on RAM when I was having lag. Sometimes I would have 65 MB free and the pho

i use "autokiller memory optimizer" since it just changes the settings on the built in task killer. I set the preset to strict. i also use "cachemate" which you can set to clear the cache daily. hope it helps. fyi, please post questions in the q&a section in the future. thanks!
Strange as this may sound, what I found was that if I do a *228 -> 1, followed after the reboot, with another *228 -> 2, things cleared up tremendously. I also discovered that there are some market apps that show up as protected when installed when viewed by some app managers....I am now avoiding them. my phone now feels much more responsive, much less sluggish. and while I cannot say for sure, I think advanced task killer was causing some of my lagging issues. I use autokiller for now, and I will say this, I'm becoming much less comfortable with task managers, something just does not feel quite right about them in this OS. Clearing the cache as stated above also helps.
oh, and the comment about treat this like a computer.....humm, this IS a computer, its the smallest computer I own, so like a computer, get a CPU monitor and make sure your idle time is REALLY idling, you do not need to three or four of these things like I was playing with....I found Temp+CPU v2 in the market and it does exactly what I need it to do. a phone doing nothing should actually be doing nothing, make sure it is.
When playing Texas Holdem mainly, dowloading, multi tasking, or gamaing it just flashes all three lights and reboots. I do not know if its my 32 gb sd card but I have tried normal 16 gb sd stock and does the same thing. Its really weird because sometimes it seams like it will be trucking right along for a little bit and then BAM reboot. I have read some things like voltage problems, overheating, and possible kernel issues ... All I know is that when I hit 450 million on Texas Holdem I really do not want a random reboot erasing my chip count.
I am currently running 15609 build 351 with latest non beta clockword recovery ... Was originally bought from dell under locked AT&T 1.6 ... I used qdl tool to convert everything automatically to 2.2 then do dell factory reset to 2.2.2 then flash clockword recovery and superuser ...
When doing normal everyday tasks it never reboots even by itself. Like right now not a problem. But if I get into the phone and use it like it should be its going to reboot sooner or later.

I have 5 full tabs of applications which 4x6 per page would be total of 120 apps ... I have some system monitor programs which only show a hand full of apps running in the background? Is that way to many apps to have on this phone?

I had a similar issue.
My 1st streak was doing this, no matter what rom I was running (seemed to be triggered by wifi events) I was researching the issue and found there have been a few streaks that have either had reboot issues caused by battery cover problems & others that may be "just plain defective". I suspect mine was in the "Just plain defective" group. I had it replaced and no further issues (I am really careful about the battery cover just to be safe) I was less than 3 weeks after purchase so I had Best Buy replace it on the spot. since it has known issues they did not have a problem replacing it.
Cheers
BR
911! I had a random streak lying around so I copied everything over and sure enough it must have been a defective streak! I have over a million in Texas Holdem and we are going strong with not one random boot with the exact same set up ... Will be sending that other streak back per warranty ... I am loving this! Thanks for everyones help ...

I have an issue where games and apps quit on their own when it gets too crazy.
if you go into data/tombstones you will find crash logs, read through those and you can see whats causing the issue.
Nexus 7 32GB is my first android device. Before I bought it, most people were saying that android is finally smooth, project butter and so on. But that's not the case here. I'm on 4.2.2 stock, have currents sync disabled, my storage is only half full, and my Nexus is starting to get on my nerves.
- screen rotation takes exactly 4 seconds, no exception.
- apps sometimes freeze, forcing me to force close them or even reboot occasionally.
- even some simple games, like Dragonvale, run like stop motion in certain segments.
- when I install ANY app, it seems that android service responsible to put icon on my home screen takes 100% CPU time for 10-15 seconds or so.
- when there are app updates, my nexus is unusable. Takes 10+ seconds for any action.
Say what you want about windows phone, but that thing flies. Am I maybe spoiled by it's buttery smoothness so android by comparison irritates me, or is there really something wrong with my Nexus? I already did hard reset once, early on. It did not help. Should I try again? If so, what backup solution is the easiest?
I know I might be asking a lot and that there are threads about this already, but info is scattered, and there are numerous contradicting opinions and advices. Basically I am just not sure if this is how it's supposed to be, or should I try something.
The lag after installing app is there because of R/W being made to internal memory. App's icons on homescreen are being placed by Play. You can disable it in it's settings. But the rest sounds like a rouge app. Are you sure this lag is there even after fresh system installation?

How do I detect a rouge app? Task manager? Can you recommend one?
It was slow to start with. Disabling currents sync did not help. And I did do reset in the first few days. Did not help.
Now, it's just even more slower. Perhaps by as much as 50% in some actions, if I can put a number on a subjective impression.

Well if you want better performance... ROMs and kernels are the things to mess with.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk HD
You should probably flash a ROM/kernel for best performance. But if you still don't want to mess with ROMs, reflash the stock rom and reroot it. That's what helped me.
I've had some issues with my phone lagging during/after app update, and i've only recently nailed down the culprit. Turns out it was the Root Uninstaller app that was making backups of older versions of the apps during the update, it ceased after i turned off the option in it's settings (or just uninstall). My guesstimate would be that you have some app that is doing just that. Because my own n7 doesn't noticeably lag even if i try to update many (as much as 10) apps at the same, which usually kills my single-core SGSL into a reboot shortly after trying this.
I think 4.2 is just buggy. It flies for me sometimes and on some devices, and sometimes it crawls horribly. Maybe the next android version will fix this, maybe not

This helped me a little (If you don't use Currents then this could help)
1. Go to Settings > Apps > All (swipe right 2 times) > Currents
2. Click "Force Stop"
3. Click "Disable"
It should be now fixed for some of it. Like the earlier posts suggest, maybe reflashing stock ROM or installing a kernel (once you're comfortable) will help for sure.
It seems messing with kernels and roms is the best way to do it.
And even though I'm asking this on XDA, I'm not really comfortable with that, especially considering that I've come across the word "bricked" many a times. Especially since I have almost two years of warranty left.
I'll give it a thought and see if I'll go along. It depends how irritating the lag becomes. But by the looks of it, I'll end up with a windows 8/blue tablet next time around, when the next gen silicone from AMD and Intel is ready. I'm much more comfortable with windows environment.
AW: [Q] Is Nexus 7 supposed to be this way? (laggy)
If you're having a lot of apps installed you can get ram problems. Some apps are running in the background even if they don't need to. If you wanna know which apps those are simply go to apps and swipe to the second panel. There you can see which asps are running in the background .You should delete them. If you don't want to do that simply download the app Greenify
(You should have more than 200mb free)

Get rid of your Nexus and buy a bloody surface then?
In regards to your question, if you've Rooted but cannot install Adaway then it seems you haven't rooted correctly.
This may be the source of your issues.
As explained before, factory reset, re-root and then if you really wanna see it fly take our advice.
A good start is Paranoid Android and Faux123 Kernel (I've been using this combo since I bought my nexus, and yes I've tried other combo's I just can't stay away). Paranoid is an epic ROM, and IMO Faux cannot be beaten. He finds the absolute perfect point between performance and battery !!.
Unless you seriously can't follow directions you won't brick your device. People throw that term around when they are far from bricked. Just make sure you understand the steps of anything you are doing and use good sense. If things go sideways, don't just start doing things blindly. Research the problem you are having, and ask for help if you need it.
But you shouldn't have to run a custom rom to get smooth performance. Like has been suggested I'd go back to stock. Root, and add things back as you need them. See if it runs smooth with only a basic set of apps installed.
Your N7 will be fastest on a custom ROM/kernel. But it should be perfectly usable on a stock setup.

RT is a joke, and PRO is too expensive and has awful battery life. I'll wait and see how temash and baytrail turn out to be. But that's besides the point, since I'll still keep nexus as an ultra-mobile device.
In any case, can I backup all the data, reset, and get EVERYTHING back, or will I need to do something manually? I'll definitely try to reset/re-root.
But I don't see what I did wrong. I mean, I can install every app on the market that requires root

It honestly shouldn't lag like that. Even bone stock.
One thing you can do right away is go into developer settings (click 7 times on Build Number in About Tablet to enable) and change all animation settings to.5 or to none.
DL Root Checker, or just try to use any root app to see if you actually do have root. Even with the wonderful toolkits (which will also save your bacon if you get into a bootloop) getting root to stick can be tricky...you may have to run it a couple of times.
But the best results will come if you flash a custom rom and kernel. if you like a tweaked stock experience, try CleanRom Inheritance. It uses the Aroma installer, so it's very easy and customizable. It can be found under Android Development.

You can use titanium backup. It there others like carbon. But titanium has been around the longest and it's my preferred way. Requires root, and it should warn you at start up if you aren't rooted correctly.
I would do as others suggested and just restore basic apps after factory reboot and re root. Then slowly restore others to see if you notice other problems along the way.
Also, if you didn't know. You can install kernels without wiping tablet and changing the whole Rom. I would definitely try that eventually too.
One more thing to note. Don't judge android on chrome (not that you mentioned it, but I know a lot of newbies have). It's one of the slowest browsers. It has tons of great features which I love, but do slow compared to most others. I wish I wasn't so addicted to its syncing.
Thanks to everyone on advices.
1) root checker says I do not have proper root. Now that I think about it, I did update my Nexus 7 from 4.2.1 to 4.2.2. I guess that also removed root.
2) I will reset. I don't really have any messages or photos or app data that is not already in the cloud that I need to backup.
3) I'll try to gradually install everything app by app to see if it's a rouge app.
4) I'll than revive this thread with my results. Though I doubt I'll get to doing all that in the next few days.
Again, thanks everyone!
I would like to know if anyone else is having the problems I am having, and possible a solution.
Multiple times a day and seemingly random times, the phone heats up temendesly and starts lagging really badly, sometimes so bad I can't even unlock it.
I can't figure out if something is causing it because alot of the time it starts happening while its in my pocket, locked. Alot of the time when it does heat up it just stays hot, so I have to turn it off and leave it for 5-10 minutes to allow it to cool down. Once it has cooled down and I switch it back on, it seems to stay cool (Untill it has another episode and overheats again).
But then other times, I can be watching videos or playing games and it is very responsive and doesn't heat up more than it should, how ever this is rare.
I searched the forums but only found one related post. They had their phone replaced once, and so have I for other reasons. Could I have a defective unit?
Are there any apps I can use to monitor resource usage to maybe see if its a rougue app or system process?
I will also mention that I am using the Hyperion extended battery for the phone, but im not sure if it plays a roll in the issue, as the battery itself does not seem to get hot, only the CPU (I can feel it very hot where the figureprint scanner is)
I have not tested the phone with the stock battery, how ever I may try this.
Thanks,
Well I have had mine a few days. And compared to other phones I have had, it at times while locked does seem a bit warmer. However it hasnt concerned me much, or been truly "HOT" as in 90c and up.
Only time my phone got extremely hot was on first boot out the box for about 30 min. I would definitely suggest seeing how it behaves over a day with stock battery, if for nothing more than process of elimination.
Not sure if your rooted? And I'm not sure any kernel has it, but the IntellX governor sits at 300mhz while locked. Useful for keeping temps down. Also kernel auditor (needs root) shows cpu/gpu/battery temps right on the "overall" section.
Not sure what other apps you have, but possibly have some kind of runaway process(s)? have you tried safe mode for a day to see if it still happens?

I might try stock battery tomorrow if I can find where I put it.
Not rooted currently.
Also not sure how to boot to safe mode?
Also just to clarify, it overheats all the time, not just when locked. I will try a temp monitoring app to see what its at when its overheating
Safe mode
With the screen on, press and hold the Power key.
In the options menu that displays, press and hold Power off.
When prompted to restart in Safe Mode, tap OK.
After your device restarts, it displays Safe mode at the bottom of the screen.
Uninstall apps that are causing a problem.
Turn off safe mode
With the screen on, press and hold the Power key.
In the options menu that displays, tap Power off and restart.
The device will restart and Safe mode overlay will no longer show on the screen.
So I haven't tried stock battery or safe mode, but I did a reset on the phone. The phone has been running great. After about 2 weeks now its starting to slow again, heat up a lot more. I am really puzzled to why this is happening. I'm not sure if it is a app I have installed. Are there any apps that monitor usage on the phone? Or any other ideas why I keep experiencing these problems.
Same issue here, I fixed it by flashing a kernel that has rctd removed. Maybe systemless rooting can cause the root checking service to bug out and start spawning numerous loops until it is using up a large percentage of CPU.
To be honest there's is no fix to this. Android kinda sucks and with Development coming to a stop for this phone I'm afraid this is as fast as you're going to get it going. I suggest looking into making your own rom or getting a better optimized phone. This is of course my two cents.

Not true as dleclair in the post obove you stated you can stop all lag with this device. Since removing the files on my phone it has never lagged. Snappy as a fresh install

But if we are honest here, the phone should not be slowing down after a few weeks usage. It should stay running almost as good as a fresh phone/reset. My old GN3 slowed down after all my apps, sure, but not like this phone does.

Maybe i'm confused by what you mean, but doesn't that mean that should only affect me if I am Rooted? Although I am thinking of rooting and trying different Kernels if it helps.
These are the types of issues I am getting. I know someone else through my job who has the same phone but does not have these issues. Is it faulty? Would a kernel fix it and are there any for my model ? (H990DS) I can't seem to find any for this phone. Send help.

I'm not sure how much useful information you can get from apps without root to monitor your device for troubles like this, but you should at least look into the monitoring capabilities in Android and have the device on for a good amount of time to catch when these performance issues hit. hopefully it is just a rogue app
It is very easy to fix Man
By simply replacing the thermal config file

well it's going to take time to figure out something like this out. what I would do is root and then use something like SystemPanel 2 https://forum.xda-developers.com/android/apps-games/app-systempanel2-boost-clean-t3552690 and see the live view of what's currently using up CPU. what's good about this app is that it gives you an overview of usage over 3, 8, 24 hours so you can see what was using the most CPU during a certain range of time. but it would be best to see if you can have this app running for a bit and check it right when the lag is occurring.

Right. So I'm a little salty at the moment. I have had ES File Explorer on my phones for probably close to 2 years now. If anyone has used it lately you would know about the anoying notifications that it has. So last night I decided to uninstall it to see if possible ES explorer was causing the lag by indexing my files or something. And lo and behold 30 seconds after uninstalling the CPU cooled down and the phone was USABLE. Played around with it a bit, jumped from app to app, webpage, video, all running as they are supposed to, not super laggy and delayed. I am 99% sure it was ES File explorer giving me grief over the last 12 months owning this phone. I'm really hoping that was the only issue and I can now use my phone as intended. If that's all it was, then thanks for the help from those who are here.

Wouldn't surprise me tbh. Stopped using it 2 years ago when it started being filled with ads and having features bolted onto it. Moved on to Solid Explorer with the FTP plugin, and never once had an issue

Lack of support on a specific variant isn't cause to discredit a whole model. If you wanted support or specific functionality like root, a custom ROM or kernel for example, you research the variant with the most development activity and purchase that one. It's why I got the H990DS, that's still kicking.

Maybe on your next contract renewal look at going a SIM-only plan. Changes your world.
