s7 edge charging/usb port FRIED... - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

20th May 2016,
After numerous calls to ANOVO, Samsung customer service, Samsung Head quarters, Customer relations, 2 formal complaints letters and 2 emails to Samsung customer service director, 1 email to their head of sales. I was told it was escalated to the highest level.
They have emailed me to confirm that
1. they will send me a brand new sealed replacement phone.
2. refund me the £44.99 repair cost from ANOVO
3. a gear vr as a good will
4. to keep me updated about their internal investigation

"Thank you for contacting us regarding the problems you experienced with your Samsung product.
We arranged for the unit to be inspected by a Samsung Approved Service Centre
Once the engineer inspected the unit they noted that the water resistance test has failed caused by the burnt USB connector. The 5pin header of USB cable is burnt. There is dirt/dust and liquid residue inside the USB connector and cable. The speaker on rear case is damaged and melted next to the USB connector.
The engineer has concluded that the device has liquid damage to the USB connector which has caused a short circuit during charge resulting in heat and burns to the device and cable. I can appreciate that the S7 is advertised as being water resistant, however the product specialist has confirmed to us that the device has been found to be tampered with in some way causing the water resistance test to fail.
In situations where evidence of liquid ingress and/or physical damage is found, this invalidates the terms and conditions of the Samsung Warranty supplied with the unit as this is not a manufacturing/component failure.
The engineer has noted the unit is repairable.
As the results of this inspection are based on physical evidence as opposed to opinion we are unable to over-turn this position and we apologise for any problems and inconvenience that this process caused.
A service centre called Anovo will contact you with a quote, if you are unhappy with this you can contact them using the details provided with the quote to request the device be returned to you un-repaired.
I am sorry that we cannot offer a more positive outcome for you."
The device was only 10 days old, £639...
I put it on charge overnight, and I noticed it was switched off in the morning. So I switched it back on, there was a pop up message saying the phone had to shut down because of overheat and I saw the battery was charged at 100%. I didn't pay much attention and kept using the phone until that night when I tried to charge it again, I discovered the charging pot and the official cable tip were black and burnt. The phone wouldn't charge anymore and the usb connection couldn't be discovered on a pc either.
Please look at these attached pictures, it looks like it could've started a fire...
After searching extensively on the internet, I learnt that it was highly likely caused by water damage?! I don't understand why... it was dry and charging normally during the night. And even if it contacted water, the moisture sensor shouldn't allow it to charge, and it was charged to 100% and overheated.
I spoke to Samsung and due to get it inspected and they will let me know what the next step is. All I want is a brand new replacement, I don't want a repair cause it was only 10 days old...
Any ideas?

Damn that looks horrible, did you ever get the phone wet? I know it shouldn't have tried to charge if the moisture sensor was tripped. I'm just wondering if Samsung will honor the warranty if the moisture strips are tripped.

Wow...it was scared! I hope Samsung give you a solution ASAP!

There were a few raining and stormy days, I was on holiday, but I always wiped it clean and dry. And that shouldn't really cause it to burn? I used Samsung s5 before and Xperia Z1, I even took them to shoot pics in the water, nothing like that happened. And, I don't understand, if there were water in the port, why would it charge to 100%, then got overheated and shutdown, then burn the port?
I'm sending it to Samsung now, I hope they have a good explanation.

I doubt the water indicators are tripped then since the phone wasn't submerged. They should offer you a warranty replacement, sucks cause you'll lose you warranty on a brand new phone.

Its bad, news dude.
They say, you tampered with your phone causing it to let in water therefore resulting in the phone being fried.
They are not going to cover you under warranty.
This is Bull in my opinion, sorry guy.

I would personally ask for a full report to why the device was "tampered with"
Because if the Device was Tampered with, and you claim to have not Tampered with it.
Then you can push the blaim onto the company you purchased the device from (Or your phone provider if on contract)
You need to know how and why the warranty is void, and its not a unreasonable request.
You can claim for security you want to know why the device was tampered with, and now are concerned about the security of the content that was on the device.

I doubt anyone would , i think they just getting out of this a bit to lightly.
Had a problem with a Sony device once, i made a big issue of it via my network and social media.
Hot it replaced, could be an option for you.

If you are 100% you have not modified it.
Then a case of Bullying IMO.
So go down the route of being a very considered citizen about the content that was on your device.
They quoted Tampered with, Something you have not done.
So now this leave to question the security of the content that was on the device, Do you now need to go and change your passwords on your Banking, Change your Email account passwords?
Tamped with using as a loosely word like that is asking for a come back!
Example how and why it was tampered with, Was it hardware? has the device been opened up?
Have seals been broken?
Does that mean the security of the device was compromised?
Dont be rude, dont be nasty.
The people you are dealing with are following protocol, And there less likely to go that extra mile if your sharp with them.
(I work in a 3rd line Support, and apply this very logic, Rude to me, i wont help, Am here to serve and help so show some respect)
Try typing something up and post it here, am sure some people will help with the wording

HTC WANT ME TO PAY FOR MB Replacement

HI guys as i reported a few days back my hd died on me so i sent it to them to fix, well theyve got back to me 2day saying that:
"Our initial assessment of your device indicates that the repair work required is caused by damage that isn’t covered by warranty. Unfortunately, this means we must charge you for the repair."
they want me to pay 151 sterling for it, what you think shall i pay it? or shall i just buy the dam iphone! its really pissed me off is there any ways around it? is there a way to buy the the motherboard from some where else?
Why isn't the motherboard covered by the warranty? You didn't break the seal did you?

Hmmm.... I think you battery was dead. If battery is completely dead HD won't power up from charger per se. And they have seen the illegal criminal stuff on your HD. The price they quote seems more like for battery than motherboard.

But a custom ROM can't damage the motherboard... And since he is specifically talking about a problem "caused by damage that isn’t covered by warranty" and not "we have to charge you because your warrenty is void" I'm not too sure this is the problem...
I would ask them to specify what supposedly damaged the motherboard that isn't covered by warrenty!
I'm having the same issue with my Diamond. The screen broke (touches are all over the place) and they say the following:
Illegal software has been found on your device (HardSPL), this has damaged the motherboard. It will have to be replaced and you will have to pay for it as this has voided your warranty.
There are several issues with this. First, HardSPL does not damage the motherboard. Second, software does not break screens. Third, nowhere in their warranty it states anything about something like this voiding it. Fourth, for many countries in the EU they would have to fix it due to EU warranty regulations irregardless if this voided the warranty or not.
Anyways, my lawyer is on it.
thanks guys im thinking of getting it deliveryed without getting it "fixed" will only cost me 11 quid, and buy a new battery, is there anywhere you guys would recooment getting a new battery from? im assuming that they have managed to turn on the hd, which i couldnt do and panicked and sent it to them within a day, if i can turn it on ill down grade everything and then take it to tmobile as im covered with issurance

thanks i mite state this to them they didnt even specifically say how i managed to mess up my MB
i cant even get through to them now seems that all there support numbers are down
You'll find that all companies including HTC will try all methods of getting out of warranty and the fact that you have HSPL on your device (whether or not it was related to malfunction) will be enough for them to void your warranty.
Others have sent devices in and had no problem as device wasn't checked. You have been unlucky.
My device broke at the weekend and seeing as I have 2 HD's I decided it was worth the risk taking it apart. I managed to refix the motherboard due to a faulty loose connection. Took a while to figure it out.
HOWEVER I WOULDN'T ADVISE ANYONE TO DO THIS!!! THIS SHOULD BE DONE ONLY AS A LAST RESORT, AND ONLY IF YOU KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING!! ONCE YOU HAVE OPENED DEVICE YOU WILL COMPLETELY VOID WARRANTY!!!!
i managed to get through and spoke to some1 he said that the usb had something to do with the motherboard failing, im gona try getting it sorted through insurance, they are going to send me a more detailed reason for them charging me for repair, ill post it as soon as i get it

I am writing to inform you of my disappointment with the HTC. Last week I sent my phone my phone in for repair as it kept on switching off (09GBD230000153). After a few days I was sent an email telling me that HTC knew what was wrong with the phone but would charge me for repair as the “work required is caused by damage that isn’t covered by warranty”. I was told the main board needed replacing. This confused me somewhat as I had not ever dropped the phone and the phone never had liquid damage. I called the center saying that this was all a bit confusing; they assured me and told me that they will find a more detailed description of the fault. I received a call today from a HTC operator explaining that the warranty was void as a new rom had been “flashed”. I argued that there was no way this could affect the hardware. He was very sympathetic but kept his stance. I have now decided to have the phone returned without repair but am bitterly disappointed about the way HTC conduct their policies on warranty. If HTC sent me a message when I first sent the phone into repair saying that the warrenty was void due to an “illegal” rom I would have understood. But to claim that the “work required is caused by damage that isn’t covered by warranty” is farcical. It seems HTC will do anything to avoid repairing the phone at their own expense. HTC need to understand why people flash “illegal” roms in the 1st place. It is not because of HTCs interface but primarily because of the poor windows software the stock rom holds. I am contemplating approaching BBC's Watch dog as I believe people need to know more about the company as it is slowly growing in the UK and Europe. I am also aware of people in the US in the same predicament and Dog Eat Dog productions (a Michael Moore company) has taken a special interest for a future documentary.

Im thinking of sending my HD in as it will no longer charge from power supply only USB any ideas why that could be,, i have hardspl on it now if i take that off and reflash to a stock rom will that unvoid my warrenty?

if you send it to them make sure you reflash the stock rom, i would have but the phone wouldnt turn on now there screwing me, so along as your phone works, reflash the stock rom and then send it

Who says they have to? They make enough money out of us already doing what they do. Why do they need to change? I'd be surprised if you get a response (though if you do, post it). I'd imagine they will just stick to what they previousy told you and state warranty is void due to illegal rom installed

Sprint replacing/fixing htc hero's with dust

ok I know for a fact they will replace your htc hero (it'll be refurbished, but if your dust is as bad as it is on mine then it's worth it).
this is what I did (it's long kinda, i'll put a tl;dr at the bottom) to get a refurbed phone from sprint for no money.
skip to bottom if you want summarized version
-spent about 30 minutes in a sprint live chat, the denied any problems with the phone and tried blaming it on me, I said their forum is full of cases of people with the issue, they told me they don't support online forums. I said then why do you guys have one. they asked for a link to the thread (i linked to one with a bunch of complaints about it in one thread) and told me to just go to the repair center and they would fix it for free, no problems at all.
-went to the sprint repair center, they said sure it'll take about 30 minutes BEFORE my phone went to the back by the techs they opened it up and said it had water damage. I stood there dumbfounded, not once had my phone been near water. He said it was from sweaty palms or sweat on my head. I said come on dude the phone has no problems other than the dust, the water detecting strip isn't even all red it's no big deal, he wouldn't budge though. he told me to go pay 100 for a refurb (deductible)
-called sprint *2. summarized what just happened they said oh no they should have been able to fix it for you. I asked what now ? they said they could have a refurbed phone sent out to me instead of having me go back there. HOWEVER if there was water damage they would charge me (I'm sure there isn't though, the strip isnt' fully activated yet).

tl;dr - If you have dust, take your phone to the repair center, they can take it apart safely, without voiding the warranty. If you have a custom rom, just take out the battery before giving them the phone. If you have ANY signs of water damage, call *2, explain that you just tried to have the dust blown out at a repair center and they refused due to a minute amount of water on the sensor. they will ship one to you in 2-5 days.
I guess this is mostly my little rant on how much sprint likes to pawn their responsibilities of on the next person. Everytime i go to the damn repair center they say water damage !
yeah i just got my replacement the other day becuase of dust only mine was new not refurb.
I'm assuming it'll be refurbed, but it may be new, I will post what it is when I get it (probably monday or tuesday).
I'm going to have to do this soon, mine is filling up.
So the solution is replaced phones/cleaning out. But they have not fixed this problem? Makes no sense.

It's like your in my head d00d. instead of replacement phones, they should get you guys a hover vacuum
I have had a zagg case on my hero since day one and dust has filled the lower screen and top left part of the screen as well. I don't live in a dusty house, not that it would matter really since I'm hardly home.
Also, yes you could disassemble your phone, but that could void the warranty, and this was is free and you could get a new phone from it.
Tell ur mom to start cleaning out your pants pockets better.
Stop placing the damn phone into those filthy pockets till she learns to do the laundry correctly.
Or better yet, how about YOU take a min to clean them before YOU put them on......dust problem solved......your welcome!!!

If you have ANY signs of water damage, call *2, explain that you just tried to have the dust blown out at a repair center and they refused due to a minute amount of water on the sensor. they will ship one to you in 2-5 days.
I guess this is mostly my little rant on how much sprint likes to pawn their responsibilities of on the next person. Everytime i go to the damn repair center they say water damage !

unlike vzw, sprint techs dont use the indicator strip as evidence of water damage. it can be a clue, but when they take the phone apart they have to find corrosion on the board to claim liquid damage. believe it or not they actually get paid to fix phones (and are tracked on when they fix a phone versus referring to insuance or having to exchange it) so the techs want to fix as many phones as possible. the hero dust issue is a very easy repair too.
also, theres no such thing as "not enough" water damage. when moisture gets on the strip it turns colors, plain and simple. yes, if it is submerged then it will get more red than if its just a drop of water, but a drop of water is all it takes to fry electronics. now chances are the warehouse wont look at it enough to charge you, but do be weary if the techs makred the device damaged beyond repair which they should have if they denied the repair in the first place.

the tech didnt get to look at my phone it was someone at the front counter he opened it up without saying anything to me and said oh theres water damage. the whole strip isn't red is what I meant. I never dropped it or came close to water so I'm positive it doesn't have water damage on the inside.
the person said that if the indicator is red AT ALL they can't touch the phone because they don't want to take a risk, they recommended that I took the phone to a third party store where it isn't guaranteed. I called sprint right after the tech store and they agreed with me though.
Sprint techs don't get paid to repair phones, well, not per phone. We get paid an hourly wage.
Some third parties will pay their employees per phone, but corporate employees don't get paid per phone repair.
I wish we got something per repair. I repair 3-400 phones a month. Even if we got a dollar a repair it would be nice.
I also have this problem. In the same house, my other phones are very clean on the lower screeen. Many GSM users of Hero have the same problem too. I only use my hero for 3+ months. I can see dust on my screen.

Need some opinions on warranty replacement

So, here's my story.
The screen "died" on my Fascinate last Friday (4 days ago). When I took it off charge in the morning (I always charge it overnight), I noticed some discoloration in the center of the screen. Phone was still functional, but I really didn't look into much as I was leaving for work. After about 2 hours, I looked at the phone again and the screen was much worse. It now had an image burned on it and it was getting darker. Touch screen also stopped working about this time. Well, after another hour or two, I couldn't see anything on the screen except for a small bit at the very top of the screen.
I called the Verizon store over lunch and explained what happened, they patched to another tech support guy who had me pull the battery, which helped nothing. So, he put through to overnight me a replacement, which is arriving today. Well, I picked the broken phone this morning which has been powered off all weekend, and when I looked at it in the light I could see the screen underneath is cracked in an arch at the top. I have no idea how it could have happened. I'm very gentle with my phone and have no memory of when such damage could have occurred. This is the first time I noticed it, and you really have to look at it at the right angle to even see it. The glass on top is flawless and the phone shows no other signs of damage.
I'm really not sure what to do at this point. Is Verizon going to notice it and tack the $500 or so onto my bill? Should I call them and explain what happened? I'm pretty sure there's a good chance it will just slip through the cracks when they receive my broken phone, but I guess my conscience is getting the best of me. Anyone have any thoughts on my situation or experienced similar in the past with Verizon?
I'm guessing you have asurion insurance? I believe you can so 2 replacements a year. That being said... You're first replacement came in broken and I wouldn't accept it.

I do not, which is why I was happy when they told me it was a warranty replacement. My heart kind of sunk when I saw the crack
An arch from electrical current? If that's the case maybe call and tell them. Just be sure you don't have water damage.

Definitely no water damage.
Not an arch from electrical current. The crack is in a arch shape. No idea what the cause was. I'm just afraid once I send it back, they are going to see it and claim abuse and charge me for the replacement. If there's a good chance that could happen, I may want to just send the warranty replacement phone back and replace the screen in my broken phone for $100.
If the crack is under the main screen then i would say it will be covered easily. I had a BB Storm where the screen was fine but the digitizer shattered. Vzw store replaced it without a problem.
Sounds like a manufacturing defect to me . AFAIK your phone has a 1 year manufacturer's (Samsung) warranty so Verizon probably won't care to replace it since the replacement cost won't be coming out of their pocket.

One thing with verizon I have noticed it's they really don't have too much of a conscience when it comes to us customers, so why have one with them. Warranty replace it and claim it must have happened during shipment if they notice. doubt they will argue. I know some people misuse the warranty replacement thing, but apparently you aren't. I forgot to replace the official software bacl on one of my storm replacements (there were 11 total and they were all legit) they didnt even notice. Odds are the screen will get replaced and sent off to another customer and they will be none the wiser

Water damaged Moto Droid2 questions

So my room mate's Droid 2 got a little water damage.. The phone wont power on at all and gets hot if the battery is left in it.
Obviously a broken phone.. however the water damage indicator on the phone is not showing that it has been wet..
so my question is: How possible would it be that I could take the phone into Verizon and play stupid to try to get it replaced..?
My room mate has already called Verizon and got a new D2global sent to her and has no use for the old broken D2.
any input or advice is much appreciated thank you
1. Check, how old is your device (maybe garantee?)
2. Before you do anything, you should make sure, that the inside of the phone is dry. Therefore I advice to lay the phone on a little bit warm heater (not hot!!) without the battery (maybe this does the job already...).
3. If not, play silly at your seller...
... if phone doesn't start after drying, you should start it without the battery (with charging cable)... maybe just your battery is dead.

im more just concerned about Verizon's policies and procedures.. if there happens to be any VZ reps or employees listening...??..

If your roommate got another phone sent to her as a replacement for the original that was dropped in water, then they will expect the defective device to be sent back. If it was an upgrade (meaning she paid money and/or agreed to a contract extension) then there is no expectation of VZW receiving any device back. After 5 days of her have the replacement they check for the device that is expected and charge the account full retail price (prolly around 6 hundies). That being said, if it isn't on any account, its not covered by warranty. Your best hope is to let it dry out completely (about a week or so in a dry place) and then try again to use it. Liquid damage will show in other places and they don't go only by the indicator sticker.

Thank you Bornthor, for your comment. You are correct; if the original device was replaced via the warranty, or via the Equipment insurance program, it does need to be returned within 5 days of receipt. If it is not returned, then the line will be charged a non-return fee. This fee is based upon the full retail cost of the device, which is over $500.00. Upon receipt of the replacement, a free shipping label was included, in order to return the device with no out-of-pocket cost.
I would strongly recommend not using this device on a different line, since your roommate will be charged for it. Once the charge is on the line, it cannot be removed until that same specific device is returned.

I accidentally laid my droid2 face down on a wet nightstand a while back (after a long night of drinking). Woke up with water under the screen. I had an old broken droid2 laying around and I was able to transplant the motherboard from the wet one into the old screen/keyboard assembly. You might try doing something similar with the d2g if nothing else works.

I know that if you take the phone into the store and have them make a warrenty exchange they wont charge you. The tech needs to inspect the phone befor it is exchanged. If you play dumb at this point and they dont pick up that there was water damage then your going to be ok. Yes when you call in then send the phone in, theres a good chance that you will be charged, and its bull how much verizon charges for these phones now.
I've been told that placing phone with water damage in a bag of rice overnight helps remove moisture from the phone. Just make sure your remove the battery and the cover from the back. Hope that helps somewhat.

Samsung Epic moisture indicator?

I was curious if anyone can tell me where the moisture indicators are on the Epic, and what they look like in regular state and tripped state. I only see a sticker on my battery (which I think is one) but it is completely white.
My phone isn't acting right, and it is quite a drive for me to the service center. I don't want to waste my time if they aren't going to warranty it. I didn't get it wet or anything, but I have heard of so many stories where due to the Florida humidity they falsely activate.

I don't think that is a very good place for one. WAY too exposed to humidity. Not only that, but it sucks if my headset plug has moisture and I plug it in. INSTANT trip.
Can you tell me what it looks like tripped and not tripped?

I believe not tripped it'll have blue markings on it, and tripped is completely white, but...
At our store we don't go by the sticker, it's more of a flag than anything else. What we're really looking for are burns and corrosion.
If you want, it's really easy to take off the back of your epic. Just remove battery and cover, unscrew the small phillips screws in the back, and wedge something small and plastic around the seam between the back plate and the chrome trim. You just have to keep a lookout for the buttons falling so you don't lose them.
What you would be looking for is discoloration on any of the metal.
But if you don't feel that adventurous, here's a little piece of advice: you can start a service repair ticket online before you head to the store. They'll be a little a more lenient when you get there and if there's only a tiny amount of corrosion, they'll probably help you out; they don't want their customer satisfaction score to take a hit if they tell you to go pound sand and you already have a ticket created.

ugh my battery sticker is completely white. The thing is that I have submerged two phones before, and didn't even go to the store. I knew the phone was fried and called asurian (sp?). This one is TOTALLY legit not a water problem and I am going to REALLY be upset if they give me a hard time over it.
I don't feel like taking the phone apart, and I checked the website, but couldn't find where to open a repair ticket. Are you simply just talking about clicking the "make an appointment" link at my local branch?
If you are talking about the make an appointment link, it isn't working for my local Sprint Repair center (I assume because they are not a corporate store).

So are you saying your store is one of those 3rd party authorized retailers? I didn't know they did repairs...

Yeah, this one does repairs. They are exclusively a Sprint store, just not corporate, but they do repairs. Have brought my wifes phone in there before.
You are right, it may not be water, but I use my phone every day at the gym + Florida moisture. I am concerned that these stupid sensors may be too sensitive and I may be dinged for something that I shouldn't.
I guess we will see tomorrow.

ASC's do repairs, which is probably what the store close to you is. They're graded based off of surveys generated on tickets too. What you need to do is call customer support (*2), they'll create a ticket on your device and direct you to the store where the ASC will pull up that ticket and probably get graded.
Also, there's no moisture stickers that I know of besides the mentioned, as was said before, they won't look at those anyway. It's corrosion that's the killer.
So just to follow-up, I pulled into the parking lot, and realized that I totally forgot to call customer service and create a ticket. I was pissed off at myself, but drove all the way out there so I figured I had to try it.
Got there and he tried updating my PRL/Profile, but as I got into the conversation with him, he realized that I did a great deal of troubleshooting, and didn't give it a second look. He created the ticket, and the phone will be in tomorrow.
So basically all of my angst was for nothing. I am thinking that since the phone was working, and turned on, that they probably figured that it wasn't any "abuse" of water damage. Thanks for all of the information.
