Root/Unroot - is this possible? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I have a note 4 SM-N910F (UK). I'm getting annoying skipping via bluetooth headphones whilst playing music. I've read that this can be remedied by editing build.prop.
I understand build.prop can't be edited and saved without rooting the phone and that rooting will trip knox, voiding the remainder of my warranty. I'd like to keep my warranty but won't lose much sleep if knox is tripped.
The reason I want to unroot the phone after rooting and editing build.prop is that Sky Go/Virgin TV Anywhere doesn't work with rooted phones. Problem is that flashing stock firmware, i think, will overwrite build.prop losing the changes i've made.
Any workaround for this anyone knows of?
Thanks

Go in the SuperSu app, scroll down till u find Full Unroot and do it.That will restart the phone and delete the SuperSu app and also your root access i'm not so sure about the build prop but u should try though !

Thank you I hope you don't mind but I'll wait a while for some more confirmations as to whether this will work OK with build.prop and Sky Go/TV Anywhere
I did read that you can edit and save build.prop with some wizardry mounting the phone in a custom recovery but although i've rooted phones in the past, it's not really something i'd know how to tackle without a guide.

FWIW I don't recognise your bluetooth skipping problems on my stock N910F. Is it possibly your headphones, rather than the phone? I use an old set of Motorola S9s, and also a MusicMate bluetooth speaker, and don't have any skipping problems.

Thanks Apparently it's a common issue and the BT headphones I use are fine as i don't get the problem with my other phone or BT streaming from Shield TV. Something to do with the way the CPU goes into sleep mode. If the screen is on, there's no skipping whatsoever so i'm working around it using Stay Alive to keep the screen on and and an app called Black Screen which dims the screen to an absolute minimum. The problem with this is that it drains the battery a fair bit quicker than screen being completely off.
I have no clue why yours works fine - fancy a swap?
Here's a thread with lots of owners of different phones having similar issues:
http://forums.androidcentral.com/samsung-galaxy-note-4/477341-note-4-bluetooth-skipping-audio.html

Hmmm... I have less experience of screen-off usage. Perhaps there could be a problem.

Also the skipping is intermittent. Sometimes i get a good few minutes problem free and other times it'll happen two or three times a minute. Also tried a load of different music player apps and it's not picky!!

I've got enough experience to know that I don't suffer the problem to that extent. Players I use are Amazon Prime Music, Spotify, and BubbleUPNP.

Hey,
My phone started acting up after 1 month of upgrading to gb 2.3.6. My wifi and bluetooth wont turn on and my phone constantly reboots. I used CWM and did a full wipe. and flasehd the darkside ROM. Still i have the same issue.
Does anyone know what do I need to do to get my phone working?
Thanks
A friend of mine has the same problem, Im pretty sure thats a hardware issue already. !
running gb 2.3.6 #4 - still no wifi/bluetooth
Having the same issues. Does anyone know if wifi and BT share an antennae?
try flashing a differnt radio? for your phone specs
look in ihop thread or fruit cake thread for your radios

I'm pretty sure this is a hardware issue... I have been having this problem myself, and have tried flashing many of ROM and Radio's since it has reared it's ugly head - all to no avail. The WiFi an Bluetooth do share the same Broadcom chip... maybe there's enough of us experiencing the problem that we can collaboratively order a dozen of these things (they only seem to sell in bulk).
Had the same issue, ATT had to replace the phone.
Any more news on this issue?
Same thing happened to my Atrix last week (Bell, 2.3.6, locked bootloader, unrooted).
Same here
Same problem on my original Atrix, which was replaced under warranty by AT&T six months ago. Recently my replacement Atrix has been having the same problem. Wifi won't enable and frequent reboots.
Although the phone should still be under the 1-year warranty, AT&T refuses to honor it because the screen is cracked (so much for Gorilla glass).
After getting two phones with the same problem, and hearing about countless others having the same problem, and getting screwed out of the warranty, this is definitely my last Motorola phone.
EDIT:
The "fix" that was originally posted here doesn't actually work. I'm almost certain that this is a hardware problem. As of now there is no software fix, if one even exists.
Check this thread for more info:
https://forums.motorola.com/posts/0c2f1387d6
I recommend that you post to acknowledge you have the same problem.
i tried the script and it tells me "oops... did NOT find wpa_supplicant.conf! any help?
cafe. said:
I found a permanent solution to the problem. It was probably more obvious than I originally thought it would be. This is probably what will fix it if you recently ran some sort of 3G tweak as it probably damaged/corrupted /data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf. Before I get started with what what problems my phone was having:
-'Wifi Error' message when enabled
-Random reboots when trying to enable wifi
-Bluetooth worked fine (and if you are having issues with bluetooth it may be due to a similar bluetooth related file having problems)
-Impossible to fix by flashing new roms, wiping/factory reset, and virtually every other possible thing I tried
So, just before giving up, I found something called 3Gturbocharger--which can be downloaded from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=18703418&postcount=5021 REMEMBER: IT'S 3GTURBOCHARGER, NOT ANY OF THE OTHER SIMILARLY NAMED FILES.
Now, the value of the script isn't really in the "tweaks" it provides, but rather the easy way it provides to reset the file of interest (/data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf). Run the script using "script manager" as root, once you've done this you'll be able to run a feature within the script called Wi-fixer. Run it and reboot. The problems should all be corrected. You could also try to manually navigate to 'data/misc/wifi/wpa_supplicant.conf' and simply rename it to whatever you want (as the script does), at which point the old file will be replaced by a newly generated one.
I'm assuming that in your case the bluetooth equivalent of "wpa_supplicant.conf" was corrupted. Possibly /data/misc/bluetooth/dynamic_auto_pairing.conf or /data/misc/bluetooth/incoming_connection.conf. Worth a shot trying the method I described on those files as well. Try it out, you've got nothing to lose.

My Atrix wifi stopped working in the past, but started working again. It currently stopped working once more, giving me an Error if I turn it on. The Bluetooth has never had issues and still works, I am a month past warranty but with unlocked BL it doesn't matter anyway. This seems to be a slight issue with these phones unfortunately.
I could live with the phone without wifi, but the constant reboots are unavoidable. I notice that when I originally boot the phone, if I use it and keep the screen on it works, but as soon as I turn the screen off, it reboots. Odd to me.
Ya I have the Bell Atrix myself and I'm still on Froyo because of complaints of GB. (especially battery life) Maybe I'll do ICS, but I'll wait for some reviews since its not that easy to go backwards as say my OG SGS...

Status/Quality of CM7.2

For a number of reasons, I'm thinking of rooting my Droid R2D2 and installing CM7.2. Given that I'm on 2.3.4 and the hoops required to root it, I would love it if someone could verify that the following features all work on their Droid2 or R2D2 with CM7.2. I haven't been able to find a consolidated list of what does or doesn't work on this particular phone. I'll update this post with reported statuses as people respond for others to use as a reference.
Comments in blue are consolidated feedback from others. Comments in green are my own experiences after taking the plunge.
Phone calls: Yes Confirmed
3G Data: Yes Confirmed
WiFi: Intermittent. Sometimes people have to reboot every time you toggle, but not everyone has this issue I've noticed sometimes when on WiFi I lose all data connectivity. Disabling WiFi sometimes fixes it, but not always. Rebooting seems to do the trick every time though.
GPS: Yes Confirmed
Phone-over-Bluetooth: Yes Confirmed
Stream Audio over Bluetooth: Yes, possible lag entering menus/rotating screen/unlocking due to using power amp Pandora works fine for me
Still Camera: Yes Confirmed
Video Camera: Yes Confirmed
Physical Keyboard: Every key except 'ALT LOCK' Confirmed
Motorola Desktop Dock detection/integration: Yes, though it doesn't seem to remember that I've hit the brightness/dim button between inserts as it used to when on stock.
Motorola Car Dock detection/integration: Yes
SMS/MMS (I use Google Voice for most of my SMS needs, but for sake of completeness):Yes SMS - yes. MMS - haven't tested.
In addition, if you could address the following, that would be great: One of the reasons I want to get rid of the installed firmware is because of a strange problem I have when I stream audio over bluetooth to my car. The problem is: when I'm streaming audio, and only when I'm streaming audio, if I use my car's steering-mounted controls to initiate a phone call, it seems to sever the bluetooth connection with the phone. I have to manually re-connect the car to the phone (not re-pair, just re-connect). When I'm not streaming audio, using the steering wheel-mounted controls don't cause the sever to occur. I use both Pandora and iHeartRadio, and have seen the same problem in both apps. Using the iOS version of the same apps on my work-issued iPhone don't have the problem, so I don't think it is an problem inherent with my car, I think it is an issue with the Android installation. If switching to CM7.2 suffers this same problem as the official 2.3.4, it wouldn't be worth the effort to me to switch. But if it DOES fix the problem ... I might be more forgiving if everything in the above list doesn't work fully. I still suffer the same problem.
Thanks in advance!
Other things I've noticed:
Airplane Mode: I've noticed that trying to trigger Airplane Mode doesn't seem to work properly. When I attempt to trigger it, nothing appears to happen. If I then reboot the phone, I see the airplane icon in the status bar, data doesn't work (as one would expect when in Airplane Mode), but the Bluetooth icon is visible, as if Bluetooth were still turned on. Attempting to turn off Airplane Mode also requires a reboot.
Lock Screen: Initially, changing the settings for the lock screen worked just fine. Now, for some reason, the settings don't seem to "stick" ... I set them, but they have no effect. But, if I then reboot, the settings that I tried to set take effect. So they are being persisted somewhere, somehow ...Airplane Mode and Lock Screen: Originally I noticed the two above items. I just did a factory reset of the phone (Settings --> Privacy --> Factory data reset), and the problems went away. Airplane Mode seems to work properly, and the Lock Screen settings update as expected, just like when I first installed CM. I didn't do all that much previously, so I can't imagine what broke these the first time, but if I happen to recreate the problem and isolate the cause I'll mention it here.
ADW Launcher: When Cyanogenmod first booted up, I couldn't add, move, or remove anything from the default home screens by long-pressing. The haptic would trigger, so I know it was recognizing the presses. By going through the ADW settings and choosing simply to restart ADW, everything started working fine.
Lock Screen: I love the flexibility and customization it allows. At first though, I thought it wasn't showing the time/date of the next upcoming alarm. Then I realized that by disabling the "show next calendar event" feature, it would show up in the same place that the calendar event was otherwise appearing in.
It's fast!: The phone feels MUCH more responsive than when I was on stock.
Phone calls: Yes
3G Data: Yes
WiFi: Intermittent. I have to reboot every time you toggle, but not everyone has this issue.
GPS: Yes
Phone-over-Bluetooth: Yes
Stream Audio over Bluetooth: Never tried
Still Camera: Yes
Video Camera: Yes
Physical Keyboard: Every key except 'ALT LOCK'
Motorola Media Dock detection/integration: Never tried
Motorola Car Dock detection/integration: Never tried
SMS/MMS (I use Google Voice for most of my SMS needs, but for sake of completeness): Yes. I use both also

Does it do this with your standard music app while playing music off your SD card?
Your logic seems sound enough, but you assume Android is a perfect OS. It might just be the way Pandora and iHeartRadio are designed to handle that situation in the Android operating environment and it might just be a bug across 2.3.4. My suggestion to you would be to try these same exact things with a couple DIFFERENT Android phones (a friend's, the wife's, etc.) to see if that's just how it plays out within the Android OS. Worst case scenario, that's just a problem with the apps themselves and you write an email to them asking for an update with a solution.

Sadly, everyone that I know is an iPhone fanboy. I'm the only one with an Android-based phone!
I'm also aware that the ROM has baked-in support for Motorola's media and car docks, though I don't own one to tell you how well it works. I assume its the same code, just stolen from source, and I've NEVER seen anyone complaining about it on Gingerbread. Maybe head over to the Droid 2 Accessories part of the forum and see if there are any complaints.

Per your advice, I ran a couple of more tests, and found the following. In addition to severing the bluetooth connection when streaming audio from Pandora or iHeartRadio and using the steering wheel-mounted controls to initiate a phone call, the bluetooth connection also gets severed in the same manner when streaming sound from YouTube.
Interestingly, it does NOT sever the connection when streaming audio from the local media player or through Play Music when streaming over 3G. However, even in this circumstance, if I hit the steering wheel "Mode" button to switch to AM/FM, it severs the bluetooth connection. If I recall from past tests, this also would also sever Pandora/iHeartRadio, though I didn't repeat that this morning.
So ... it's not just Pandora or iHeartRadio, but some of Google's own software, though sometimes only when switching radio modes and not always when placing a call.
Is anyone out there running CM7.2 connected to a car and able to verify whether the same problems plague CM7.2 as stock 2.3.4?

it's not that difficult, just need a decent pc
download iso file (50mb),
mount image to cd, dvd, or usb drive
reboot pc to drive
run program, read onscreen instructions, takes about 10 mins or less
wipe cache, reboot
done your rooted
just know how to boot to bootloader and recovery, read http://droid.koumakan.jp/wiki/Welcome
written for d2G, but same steps
Stream Audio over Bluetooth: Yes, possible lag (music pausing/skipping for a split second ) entering menus/rotating screen/unlocking but maybe because I am using power amp or the kernel that I am using
Dock: There is a dock menu in settings that looks to be specific to this phone (as in I have not seen it on other cm7.2 phones) so it may work
Edit: FYI I had a fun (hard) time getting from stock (froyo) to CM7.2. I had to flash the stock (gingerbread) before I could get to 7.2 (Someone here provided me the file to flash which I may be able to dig up)
Well, I hooped myself crazy, am rooted and on 2.3.4 - and the CM7.2 install script still honks that I'm not on the right version.
Anyone else seen this one?
(I realize I'm a little late to the game - I just got a D2 off of craigslist...)

You may need to tweak the Cyanogenmod installer. See the following post for instructions on how to fix. Copying/pasting the instructions here for reference. This worked for me. I ran CM7.2 for quite a while, but eventually got rid of it due to my R2D2 having WiFi issues under CM7.2 (it would sometimes stop having internet connectivity over WiFi, and the only way to fix the issue was to reboot).

Look like you're failing the check_kernel script. This was put in place to prevent someone with a Froyo based kernel from flashing a CM version that required the Gingerbread kernel. If you open up the cm-7.2.0-droid2.zip file and look at /system/etc/check_kernel, you'll see that the required kernel version is 2.6.32.9-gca08d89, which matches my Droid2 exactly. I'm assuming your version does not match. That 2.3.4 update must have bumped the kernel version. This new kernel may or may not work with CM7.2.
Couple options I can think of. You could change the required version in the check_kernel script. Or you can blank out that entire file and replace it with:
#!/sbin/sh
exit 0
You could also edit the main update script found under /META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script and delete this line:
assert(run_program("/tmp/check_kernel") == 0);
Just make any of those changes, repackage the zip file, and try flashing that. You could very well get stuck in a bootloop due to the new kernel being incompatible and you may have to SBF back to rooted 2.3.4 and live with that for now. Good luck!
based on that post from GregMoens

Type of pause?
How long is pause?
Is it clipping?
Is it at a high volume?
Do you have any type of mono or Bluetooth apps installed?
Are you using WIFI or mobile connection for streaning?
Does it occur at certain locations or everywhere?
*Do you use OK GOOGLE or any similar Voice activated apps?
*Check your NOTIFICATIONS! Try changing SOUND NOTIFICATIONS to VIBRATE for all apps by going into sounds & notif in settings.. Change MODE to vibrate.
*Also try playing in AIRPLANE mode & do not disturb
*Does it occur when streaming to a tv or media device?
With these questions we can rule out various "connectivity" issues or interference as WELL as apps fighting for control over speaker or microphone, for notifications etc. As there are many
You should find the cause as with almost all media streaming apps most have options to go into a do not disturb mode as other apps utilize the same reaources resulting in conflicts like you described! After changing to VIBRATE notification mode and/or AIRPLANE mode, it becomes just a matter of narrowing down offending app.. Until then it will work at least!
HOPE THIS HELPS! There r days I need help! too
I had same problem and ı thought this problem can be related to an app ı installed. And it was. When i uninstalled Sputnik news. My problem had gone. If u have it, uninstal. If u dont have, may be one of other app causes. Try uninstalling each app, and find the app causes this problem

No sound at all on Nexus 6p

I get no sound on my Nexus 6p. Nothing from the speakers, earpiece, headphone jack, etc. I even get errors attempting to play anything with sound. For music, I get generic streaming errors. If I copy an MP3 that I know works to the phone, I get playback errors. Attempting to play anything on Youtube or any other video with sound, I get errors. When I switch ringtones or notifications, get no errors but no sound. Even connected to a bluetooth speaker, I can't play anything with sound.
I'm currently on a custom rom, but had the same exact problem on the latest 7.1.1 stock rom available from google. Before and after rooting.

I would say go back and flash the latest full Google image using flash-all.bat, and then do a factory reset. Until you do this, you will not know for sure if it is a hardware problem. You probably should have done the factory reset first, (while still stock) before flashing the custom ROM.
I did several Factory resets. Before and after root. With the standard factory image. Same issue.

Well If you had spelled that out in your OP, then I wouldn't have suggested it. Yep. Sounds like bad hardware to me.
Any idea what hardware? Pretty sure the phone is out of warranty. Wonder if it's worth trying to crack it open to fix it, but not sure what to fix.

Right, not knowing which part is bad. You could potentially swap the motherboard, and there is a separate daughterboard that houses the USB charging port and microphone... Both changes have been discussed here but are not usually economically viable unless subsidized by some kind of warranty coverage (eg. paying a deductible). Why don't you first check your warranty end date through Huawei. I think they have an online page/method to do that- but I haven't gone looking for it. They may have extended the end date due to other hardware issues with the phone. You can also find the date of manufacture and other info using the "Barcodes" boot option in TWRP. Good luck.

Hey, I went through the same issue with audio. No phone calls, no audio on youtube, etc.
The phone was out of warranty and Huwai was not waking it for RMA, so I tried some custom ROMs.
The after installing Cortex the audio came back and I've been using it for more than 24hs. Hope it will keep working...
Here is the rom name (cannot post links yet) of the ROM, which by the way, looks awesome!:

Screen turns on when plugging in for charge / High Volume warning Mods?

Hello!
I've been out of the rooting / custom rom game for awhile (last used with my galaxy s5) and I had a couple of questions for the community. I've been looking at rooting my phone and installing a custom rom basically only for these two things that keep bothering me.
1. Phone turns on screen when placed on charger. I won't explain why this annoys me and I've read all the posts where people are like "just set your time out to 30 seconds". I have a long time out because I am a musician and I use the phone at times for reading music. My nightly routin consists of placing my phone on my wireless charger and then pressing the power button to turn the screen off. I'd just like the phone to start charging without turning the screen back on. Minor inconvience I know, but we live in 2019 and I should be able to customize my phone the way I want, right?
2. When I'm listening to music over bluetooth, I try to increase the volume and get the "listening at high volumes..." notification. I would like to disable this permantely. I know that it goes away after hitting okay once, but it comes back after restarting. This is esspecially troubling while in the car and I have to look down at the phone and press the button making it more of a risk than it "helping me with loud volumes".
I remember using roms years ago that addressed these two specific problems and I loved them for that. So my question is, are there any fancy rooted mods I can do to my phone to disable these things, or is there a ROM that specifically addresses these issues I have? Are there files I can delete, or code I can modify? Ideally I can just disable these two things and stay stock, but I'm down for anything at this point.
Running a Unlocked Galaxy S8 SM-G950U1 with Android version 8.0.0.

You need a modified Frame Jar so you can be able to have the screen stay off when you put in the charger if you was willing to install xposed I can lead you to a Module that resolves your first issue... For your second issue the same module resolves that issue also

I'd be way into that! Please lead the way! So if I'm understanding correctly, I will need to root, flash a recovery such as TWRP, install Xposed frameworks as shown here for Oreo (my current OS), install the APK, and install the modules you point me to? Will I need to flash the stock OS again after installing the recovery? Please let me know if the link I added is out of date and if there's a newer thread. Also I am curious as to what the preferred/most up to date rooting method is for an unlocked Galaxy S8 if someone wouldn't mind sharing a link? It seems as there are a few more steps than what I was used to years ago, but I'm definitely down to dig in. Thank you for your help!

I'm now realizing I may be in some trouble as I've been doing some more digging. Am I correct that because I have an SM-G950U1 Snapdragon US "Unlocked" phone, that I have a locked bootloader and therefore cannot root?
The only thing that looks hopeful I've been seeing is with this guide, but the rom is for Nougat: here
I'd prefer to stay "stock" Oreo if possible.
Can I even install TWRP or Xposed without root on Oreo?
Thanks for your help.
Can anyone help with this? Thanks!
