Slightly Cracked Screen, Still Waterproof? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

So I was a idiot and pushed my luck by not putting a case on this thing cause videos had shown me it was very duriable..well watching a video with friends about how duriable it is, i had dropped it from literally 1 and a half feet, landed on its left corner and cracked from the volume button to the S in samsung, it doesnt look that deep or to even be a crack, at first i thought it was a scratch but it seems to.be a light scratch, so I was curious if it was still waterproof, like using in the shower or rain, or if it fell in the sink or if it fell in the bath tub. $200 to repair the screen is ridiculous.

bump? seriously wondering about this

It probably depends primarily on whether it went all the way through. If it didn't I'd think you're still waterproof. If it did, it still might be if it's holding tight enough, but obviously that's now a pathway in. Really hard to judge that without seeing the crack/scratch in person...and even then it's pretty tough to tell.

Guys
I kicked a ball at my Window the other day, Its now marked, do you think it will still be weather proof?
This thing that may be a scratch or crack, do you think it will still keep the cold out.
Just wondering what you thoughts are on my cracked screen.
(use your imagination if you want to see it)
I also have a hole in my Umbrella, You think it will leak?

it is late to reply, but I can suggest.
in Samsung phones, front and back glass are stuck to the phone by strong glue all over. now if your display is intact but has damaged glass, the display and glass are glued all together. even if your glass is broken badly, water can touch the OLED screen but can't cause any damage to display. still, the phone is water resistant. still, water can't penetrate inside the phone.

It's not Gorilla Glass, but it's still scratch resistant. I still use a screen protector though.

The words "scratch resistant" doesn't really mean anything. I don't think there is any industry definition or standard for what makes glass scratch resistant. Even Gorilla Glass is supposed to be hard to scratch, but people have still been able to scratch it, or have complained about it scratching too easily. All scratch resistant would mean, is that its harder to scratch than . . . something else. Manufacturers have probably tried lots of different glass formulations, treatments, coatings for phone screens over the years to get something that is durable, resistant to scratches, but not too expensive. So by definition, the glass on any phone is probably "scratch resistant".
Even if the screen seems hard to scratch now, you may notice it developing fine scratches over time. This is precisely what happened to my old Kaiser. People said the same things back then "the screen is hard to scratch", "you don't need a screen protector". So I tried it without a screen protector. It seemed fine for a while, but it developed fine scratches over an extended period of time. Then one time, I hastily threw my keys in the same pocket as the phone, and somehow applied enough force on the keys and phone to get a deep gouge in the screen. The glass being used on high end phones has probably improved since that old phone. But its still not worth it IMO to risk getting deep scratches on the screen, when you can just apply a $5 or $10 screen protector.

you're completely right, like the iphone is which i had for a year before my previous hero, and it did scratch over time, it doesn't mean scratch proof, youd still wanna slap a screen protector on there
I was able to scratch my screen on my previous G2 by dropping it onto a matchbox car.

Yeah, you can scratch the screen relatively easily. I had my phone in a bracketron car dock last week, and my bluetooth headset fell and hit the screen. Left a noticeable semicircular scratch, and at the bottom left about a half-in scratch so deep that it is almost a crack. I think I am going to get the phone replaced, that not-quite-crack worries me. Sux, cuz I've got nice, tight hinges on mine... the likelihood of getting a second tight one is pretty low, I guess.

Yeah, I just scratched mine yesterday. Well actually it got passed "thrown" back to me and ended up sliding across the floor screen down. But luckily only ended up with a millimeter scratch

Maybe not scratch proof but I would probably say scratch resistant. I have hand my omnia7 for 7-8 months and it has one small scratch less than half a centimeter and thinner than a hair. it is only visible when the screen is off and i have cleaned it well or when it is on a white screen, if looking very closly there is slight discolouration.
i dont take perticular care of what goes in my pocket with my phone and and not extra cautious though i have only dropped my phone once onto a wooden floor.
in short I have a scratch that is barely noticable and i am not looking for a screen protector as i belive the disadvantages of haveing one would outweight the tiny advantage that having one may have. also i dont think anyone with a screen protector that has the scratch that i have would consider the bother of replacing it!
hope that helps!

thank you, NikD1.
Mine fell down, and - how else could it be - on the screen. This has happened now three times I think. Not a single scratch. Not even the tiniest one.
That screen is really great!
As I hate using protection foils that made me buy this phone
By accident dropped it 2-3 times, holds very well. The screen/phone i have in a special case tighten to the belt so that it does not get any scratches on the screen.
Amazes me that i don't have the tinniest scratch on my screen; the screen seems to be very effective against scratches and damages.
No case, no screen protector, always in my pocket, but separate from keys or coins
Fell once or twice from my hands, marble floor
Fell maybe 3 times from the table, marble floor
Fell twice down the road, on concrete
...plus it was submerged in beer !
it hold perfectly, but I do see a tiny dent right in the center of the screen when sunlight is quite strong. Nothing major, though
My HTC Desire at this point was way more battered
I don't use a case or screen protector and I've got the phone in my pocket everyday. After a few months still not a single scratch
I've had mine for 8 months and I have several scratches on mine. they are all from sitting in my pocket without anything else in them.
I noticed my first scratch quite early on (within a few months) but these scratches are actually pretty hard to see and you have to be looking for them pretty deliberately to see them.
I wonder if it is the same with the other folks... you may have scratches on your screen but you probably can't see them very well.
i dont understand why samsung dont have used glorilla glass for this device
When I compare my Omnia7 with my former phone(Xperia X1) is Omnia7's screen like a rock, but you can scratch if you carry it with key's or any sharp objects...
I carry my omnia in a Case around my waist and have no scartches yet

AFAIK it IS gorilla glass. (As it is the same as for the wave)
I don't think it has Gorilla glass, I got my phone, it was shiny and new, no scratches on the screen whatsoever (I inspected it thoroughly for defects) and after a few days of using, noticed a scratch when I cleaned the screen, thin as a hair but 2cm long Thankfully when I applied the screen protector, it has hidden it really well. I barely used the phone and I always kept it in my left pocket (which I only ever exclusively use for my mobile phone!)
i also have some scratches. after a month of use they appeared. i have no idea how they got there, i take a very good care of the phone, it never gets into contact with anything other than my fingers.
but the scratches are only noticeable when the screen is perfectly clean (which is almost never), turned of and looked from a specific angle.
I have more issues with grease. those guys are killing me.
Oh my god, so i'd better buy a screen protector for my omnia 7 :-(((
Yes, Gorilla Glass... After 3 months of use I still don't have a scratch (knock on wood) even without a screen protector...
no, it's not I am pretty sure... I got a little scratch now... I just want to cry now....
All I know is that both me and my sister got Omnia 7s back in November last year.
I put a screen protector and case on mine and am very careful with my phone and its still perfect.
She on the other hand has no case and no screen protector and is not very careful with her things. She has one little scratch on hers where her dog knocked it across a tile floor. It has been dropped numerous times and shoved in a bag with all sorts.
I'd say it's pretty resiliant.
A used phone without any scratches on the screen is a disgrace
Gorilla glass, even with the proper branding aren't totally scratch proof, to the best of my knowledge. Anyway, two omnia7 for 8 months, not a scratch (almost )

guess what happens when you drop your S2 face down on a gravel road

I dropped my GS2 on a gravel road from about chest high, glass side down. I picked it up and the screen was completely dusty and horrible looking and I said UhOh. I got a microfiber cloth and wiped off the phone after blowing as much as possible of the screen. Got it all wiped off, and in direct sunlight at every angle, not a single scratch, blemish, pit, nothing lol. I have a slim gel on the phone, but the screen is naked. Whew!
Cool!
Peep peep.
It's called Gorilla Glass for a reason - gorillas are well known for their high resistance to being dropped by humans onto gravel.
I liked that someone experimented with Gorilla Glass
Swore I was going to read chest pains followed by back to back heart attacks until death.
Glad to hear it's ok.

WINNING ^^
Yeah I decided to forego the cases and the screen protectors after seeing some videos (not produced by screen protector sellers).
I was using Reallook but it got to slimy and even carrying the phone in my pocket with keys, only the plastic edges gets a little nicked. My Captivate's screen never had a scratch and I am the most un anal person when it comes to worrying about scratches on the body of the handset. Under everyday conditions the glass really is scratch resistant and I would say scratch proof in a pocket with keys.

I've seen reports of screens cracked, so i wouldn't jump for joy just cause someone got lucky and his screen is still intact after dropping the phone. Also reports of scratches on the screen. So i advice people not to start playing football with their SII after reading this thread

yes i got lucky, and could of also put a weak spot in the glass, and the next drop might not be so lucky.

Gorilla glass is good stuff......The "screen protector" makers are so scared of it they are posting questionable videos on YouTube of how "easy" it is to scratch. "fear" is a great advertising tactic and sells a lot of things. In fact the glass is amazingly resistant to scratching.
I would be more worried about the interior circuitry shock on a drop than the glass.
As long as HTC is in business, the screen protector people will be too. You can look at an HTC screen wrong and scratch it.
You are very lucky. Its a different story if you drop it in the sea or fall in with it in your pocket
Put it this way I've got a very expensive piece of gorilla glass for a coaster. Ohh and a spare battery that I'm too scared to use :-(
I must admit I got a zagg invisishield screen protector and it is awful. Wonder why they bothered ohh try money.

I dropped a galaxy S1 from about waist high onto concrete. it bounced about 5 times before come to rest face down.
The LCD screen under the glass was cracked into 20 different pieces. But the glass itself - not even a single scratch. You had to hold at it an angle to see the broken lcd pieces. So while the gorilla glass is strong, the screen inside itself is pretty flaky, so dont be droppin it!

Yeah Thats what I am talking about....The glass is like Pyrex...maybe even stronger. The interior parts are the issue with drops. That's where those thick soft silicone cases help out but I don't care for cases as the ones that could really protect the phone make it too bulky and the thin cases are a waste and only prevent scratches and nicks around the edges. I don;t worry about those. Never used the same phone for more than a couple years if that long. The back cover can be folded in half and if ever needed replaced easily.

That's nonsense, they scratch just as easily as the sgs2, I will let you decide how easily that is since most htc devices also use gorilla glass

Screen chipped after 6 days of ownership!

As per the title.
I wouldn't mind, but I haven't been abusing the phone in any way. It has not been dropped, bumped in to or had anything placed or dropped on the screen. It has always been placed in a pouch after use and there is nothing inside the pouch that could scratch or chip it. But there it is, 1cm below the 'S' in Samsung - a 1mm diameter chip on the screen. It wasn't there yesterday, but it's there today.
I phoned Orange and told them, expecting to be told to take a running jump, but they are delivering a replacement handset to me tomorrow, so that is one bit of good news for me. A screen protector will then be applied ASAP!
Is this screen, purportedly made from Gorilla Glass, generally just ridiculously easy to chip and/or scratch? Or have I just been very unlucky? Or is Gorilla Glass just generally **** (which is the conclusion I am being drawn to after hearing plenty of scare stories regarding the latest HTC phones, and seeing a colleagues Desire S which is absolutely chipped and scratched to buggery)?
It's strange, but I've come from a HTC Desire after 18 months with no screen protector having ever been applied and being kept in a similar pouch to my GS2, and there isn't a mark on the screen...
Bizzare, i have mine a good few months now and have dropped it twice and it's fine, granted i have a case and a screen protector but i was hammered drunk the weekend and took my phone out of my pocket to answer a call in a crowded bar and someone barged by and the phone went out of my hand onto the floor face down, cue me picked it up and not a scratch on it so i have no idea what happened to yours mate for a phone so slim it's amazing, one only has to look at this video.
That can only be unlucky, I dropped mine down a flight of stairs in a pub and watched as it went like a £400 slinky with only a £3 ebay case to protect it and it was fine. The screen is pretty tough.
I've beat mind to death since release and nothing noticeable.

Sounds like a manufacturing defect in the glass more than anything else.
Its probably a good idea to use screen protectors and some form of a case to anyone else reading this that hasn't bottom one yet.
I'm not trying to be the "I told you so guy" (I hate people like that) but I was in the same situation as OP myself using a different phone, and I'd like to save someone else from suffering the same fate...

I'm inclined to agree. The phone certainly hasn't been mistreated in any way, so I can't think of any other reason for it to appear.
Dropped my phone yesterday onto solid flooring tiles at work and it just bounced a few times and not an issue.
It's a plus of the plastic used IMO. Yes it feels tacky but it's damn strong and absorbs force extremely well. Weight also helps.
I had my Galaxy Ace get a scratch in the top-left corner about .8cm long. Sure, Gorilla Glass seems more resistant to minor scratches you get from being in a pocket, but it's by no means invincible.
I scratched my screen on the 2nd day of having it just by it being in my jean pocket on its own. Since that I always put it in a soft case if I'm wearing jeans, but still managed to get another one in roughly the same place... I had my Desire for about 16 months and dropped it many times and no scratches on the screen lol typical. Can only see the scratches if I look for them though so not too bad.
defected glass is the biggest possibility. My GS2 unknownly got out of my pocket when I was sitting, but no scratch at all
Gorilla glass should have a somewhat higher surface hardness, that's all. Nothing magical about it, except the hype.
And increasing surface hardness usually makes a material more brittle, meaning it chips and cracks more easily (and dramatically).
You can't have it all...

Whether or not a gorilla glass, i always prefer to apply an invisible shield by zagg, as soon as i take out the phone off its box. I have seen the result and its tremendous.
One phone had shattered glass but because invisible shield was applied, touch screen was still usable and one phone fell off from about 10 feet hight and nothing happened to it as because of the same.
Just my two cents.
Cheers
my phones bn gud past 3 months.. i think u r "careless" bro
I also chipped my screen.. I had a bottle opener on my car keys and forgot which pocket 2 put them in. So they can get scratched quite easily although the chip is tiny. I think a pocket pouch would probably have prevented this. I love the slipperyness of the screen and will never cover it.

[Q] FAR from "Dust Resistant"

Maybe not super important, what does "Dust Resistant" even mean when Samsung wants to push that feature? Pretty sure my past smart phones never collected dust, too. Do they mean inside that actual screen? It makes me worried because on the edges of the screen, while you have to look for it, there is dust between there and the inside of the frame (chrome plastic). So maybe dust won't enter anywhere else, but are far as those bevels are concerned, I don't think that qualifies as 'resistant'.
Which brings me to a related question: if dust collects in that area, it still has no effect on resisting water, does it? I know the battery cover and USB flap are the main things that make it water resistant, but how does that work when there's holes everywhere else?
What is the Dust Resistant feature actually meant to protect? No phones ever collect dust on the screen. Seems to me like they just mean on the outside edges of the phone, seeing as there are no separate pieces connecting the front & back of the phone.
It means dust as in like dirt and sand and stuff if im not mistaken.
Sent from my SM-G900A using Tapatalk
Likely the places it stops water getting into while closed and sealed correctly, also stops dust getting in those same places
I would assume so
Sent from my SM-G900A using Tapatalk
Iam shooting photos and movies underwater and if water didn't, came in than the dust is not problem at all.
But I know on which places the dust botherimg you, just take it underwater and than brush thath dust off with toothbrush or something. no panic this phone is underproof.
Thanks, all.
