Any experiences using cricket wireless.. Thinking about jumping - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I currently have Sprint, whom I am happy with but this new cricket deal, which is basically att . the problem I have is when I go the beaches or out of my area I have spotty if any coverage. So I am having cold feet and just want to hear any experiences, as this is unlimited data with speed caps

I think it just depends on how you use your phone. Half my family is on cricket the other half on AT&T. Same coverage which in my area is really good in central cali. If you are watching a lot of Netflix/hulu/youtube you might be impacted. But the people in my family who are on Cricket are just texting/talking/and watching a few youtube/facebook/snapchat videos per day and don't seem to have any complaints. One thing to note if you do switch to cricket their in house selection of phones is usually pretty dismal so you will be paying full price for pretty much any decent/newer device. Again the folks in my family who are on Cricket are fine with Moto G's and similar mid-range devices so not an issue for them. I have entertained the idea of switching on a number of occasions but I am just too lazy. Been an AT&T wireless customer since 1999 but the cost savings for me would be pretty significant. I travel for work a few times per year and use a lot of tethering and I am concerned the speed caps would make things hard on that front so I continue paying through the nose for AT&T

Yeah looks like I'll sticking with Sprint after doing some more research, the caps are what scared me off... Thank you for the response

Try straight talk. I wanted verizon prepaid but 45$ for only 2gb of data is a no go. With straight talk you can choose which service (verizon, att, tmobile, sprint) is best for your area and have 5gb of data for 45$ a month

Straight talk might be a good option for when I travel.. Thank you

Note that Cricket's and Straight Talk's terms of service prohibit tethering. May or may not be important to you but just fyi.

So if we're talking about buying phones branded for these carriers, wait until mid-may if you decide to buy a Straight Talk device. I work in a Walmart Connection center, and all the new stock is going to be coming in then. As far as Straight Talk vs. cricket goes, Cricket is the better choice for data speeds. I know Cricket has a cap at 8Mb/s, but the straight talk speeds never come close to that. I've not seen a Straight Talk speed test beat 4Mb/s. Even when switching different carrier Sims through ST on my MXP, Cricket doubled each of the straight talk speeds every time I ran the test.

I have been using Cricket for years and it is great. It has saved me fist fulls of cash. My wife uses ST on AT&T network and she loves it also. Only issue I had with Cricket is that when I switched to MXP my MMS wasn't working while connected to wifi. I had to replace their Proxy address with an IP address to fix it. My OPO didn't have that issue.

BTW Cricket has an unlimited data plan now. I believe it is $55 or $60.

Currently on Cricket and have been with them for about 2 years now. Ever since I got my Moto X I have absolutely loved the service. There are times when I can tell that I am being capped on speeds but only if I'm in a really congested metropolitan area. Typically it's been very good and I don't have any troubles watching youtube videos or the like. I'm on the 5gb plan with my wife. So we pay $90 every month for 10gb of data, unlimited talk, and unlimited text. Can't really beat that.

the above has a link to my google drive w/ the image, i guess because i've never posted it won't let me add links but 35 down, 14 up is stellar

Same here..I have straight talk which for my moto uses a AT&T Sim card as I ordered it to be AT&T compatible.....I have not have any issues and i have been on straight talk for almost five years. I also thought of switching to verizon but like Kir6y said I coundt get over on how little the data they offered with their plan so I am still on straight talk. If you decide to go with straight talk make sure you get an AT&T sim card you wont be disappointed.

I must just be in a bad area for AT&T congestion. In my area (a small city in Ohio), straight talk data speeds are terrible compared to Cricket even with throttling.

Tell Me About It. -_-
When I signed my contract with T-Mobile I already figured tbey would be getting bought out befor my contract was up. I just didn't know who would buy them out. I just bope the transition goes smoothly and that and T-Mobile customers that have unlimited data plans get to keep the unlimited data plans. I can not live with a 2GB cap.
It makes major since for att. after all in the usa this would totally kill any reasons for an unlock for smartphones or the iphone, since there would be no other carrier.
This means, higher prices, lower data caps, higher fees, and lower customer service.
att + tmobile = verizon, but with out the unlimited internet.

I think you might be wrong there.
You see the network will now be lets say 2xStronger that it is now. meaning, unlimited data usage might come back, since the network will now be able to handle the load.
Example, lets say Dallas, Texas. again this is just a example. it has lets say 5 AT&T towers and 7 T-mobile towers. since both companies will be having the same spectrum for voice and data, there will be 12 towers supplying the necessary amount of voice and data.
This only makes a stronger network. download speeds speeds will be out the roof, and unlimited might come back since there will a stringer network to back it up, if it doesn't, maybe larger data caps instead of the typical 2Gbs, 4 or 6GB.\
BTW, if you have unlimited ATM im sure you will be grandfathered into unlimited.
Fair Warning AT&T, I refuse to do business with you. Come the first quarter of 2012 I will switch to Verizon.
i find it funny how verizon gets an iphone, att reacts by buying a whole network. LOL

No, you won't get unlimited data usage back, you won't get larger data caps, you only get monopoly.

AT&T currently have their capped plans, and T-Mobile was suffering from limited spectrum. All that they're doing is combining customers. Sure, the network will be larger, but they're bringing in all the T-mobile customers, too.
Silver Lining
A merger like this will take forever. We won't see any change for at least 12 months. And you know Verizon won't take it lying down.
Hmm, maybe the gov't will break up AT&T again. Hell it's only been 30 yrs since the last time they did it. And we all know what happened to that...
But for us HD2 users on AT&T...how will AT&T handle TMo's 3G network? They would have to allow backward compatibility. Which means all frequencies work on AT&T. Which means 3G on HD2 running on AT&T. Makes illogical sense, just like AT&T buying TMo.
Ahh one can dream.
Yeah, when I read this earlier I was disappointed. I left at&t for a variety of reasons, mainly because of data caps & horrible customer service. I will never go Verizon, so it looks like I'm headed to Sprint as soon as my T-mo contract is up!
Also I don't think this will benefit T-Mobile users, as at&t will be flooding our towers & slowing things down for us. But it will take around 9 months before we notice those things and about a year before it's final.
But I will NOT be signing back on with T-Mobile/at&t.
If this effects my 5.99 t-zones unlimited internet I will be pissed as hell
i for one would rather use a tin can string before i go back to at&t, even if they offer me a comparable android phone in exchange for my hd2. Shame that the best phone i've ever had will soon lose 3g capability.

man i wish i had your optimistic outlook on things. I think it would be more likely for ATT to keep current caps in place in order to allow future subscribership growth without investing money on infrastructure.
It's f*#king Ma Bell, back from the damned grave. Go back you old hag.
I'm actually happy for this! Why? In my country, TMo sucks big time. No reception anywhere, and 3g only on 2/3 cities. So, by uniting at&t and t-mobile, we'll of course have better reception and more than 2g everywhere. I am actually excited by this. Best phones+best reception=win. And yeah, i know the prices, but that could change. What is sure is that we'll have the best phones and the best reception. So it's just a matter of time and patience.
i really dont know why everyone is *****ing. for those of you on T-Mobile everything will stay the same. only thing that will be diffent will be your bill and the network name on your phone. becuase you all will be grandfathred into whatever plans you all have. if at all it will be better for all us since there will be a bigger & faster network.

Hmm yeah I suppose if you need a TON of data, you are better off elsewhere...but for people who want to stick with a GSM carrier, there's nothing better right now!
I'm not sure I could ever give up switching phones as I please.
Be ware....It's not prepaid. If you run out of minutes they charge you like 90 dollars. Read the fine print. I had 30 dollars worth of data left I didn't even use switched to tmobile thinking prepaid is prepaid and they sent me a bill for 90 cancelation fee. Didn't even use my 30 worth of paid for data
No, it's NOT just TONS of Data. It's also minutes. 100 minutes? Yeah, I don't think so. This plan isn't that great. If it meets your needs fine, but don't go talking down to others JUST BECAUSE THEY DON'T AGREE WITH YOU.

Whoa, not sure where all the hate is coming from. I suppose I misunderstood you and certainly was not talking down to you. So I apologize.
Anyway, my plan is to use Google Voice or sipdroid since the minutes are capped to only 100. I just wanted to make people aware of the opportunity.

I can tell you that I am going to jump on this Sunday.
It is perfect for the 3G GSM cellular modem in my laptop.
I am sick of not having internet access in some places and as I won't ever be using voice or giving out that number it is just perfect and a deal!
Plus no f---ing contract.
Can someone confirm this plans now works fine and it is not a fiasco it was right after the release? I have HD2 Tmobile US and wonder if it will work on my phone?
I barely use my phone for talking and never over 100mins - data is pretty much what I use for the most of the time and this plan seems like a winner...
What else should we know about this plan?

Check HoFo. I haven't found much useful information here on XDA.
Of note, I have found no problems with the plan thus far (have only used it for 1 month)
hey everyone. so apparently mobile to mobile doesnt apply to monthly 4g plans. i never read this anywhere and i tried to do as much research as i could before i tired to get on this plan. but now, after 1 day of ussage, im out of minutes.
if you guys have any specific questions, post them, and ill try to answer them
Fact: I found that I had to buy a $30 t-mo phone at walmart to get this plan, and after activation, I moved the sim to a nicer device (bought a nearly unused lg g2x for cheap). I don't talk on the phone, google voice when I do (voice messages conveniently converted to text) and never give out my t-mo phone #.
History: I have been using boost for a couple years and was happy with their service/plan, but even the rather nice samy prevail (thank you ShabbyPenguin!!) was feeling a bit limited (despite root and link2sd). Was about to try Hoarks CM7 on it. I did not feel like trying to get a regular sprint phone to work on boost either.
Review: Signal strength not as good at home, but I use wifi here anyways. I get about 2Mb data over cell here tho, so not too bad. Phone is a kickass upgrade (CWM, CM7 nightly thanks to XDA forums tutorials!) and I like that I can use my sim in many other devices!
Expect to pay $30 for a phone and $30 for plan. Web activation of phone worked. Be sure to use THE AGENT CODE on the phone box! I bought the $30 card but using the scratch and dust number did not validate online , I called tmobile number and entered it there and it validated (whew!).
hope that sheds some light...

Is the agent code unique? If not, can you share it?
I just ordered the SIM on T-Mobile's website (ended up getting it as an addition to my postpaid plan for my NS which was sitting unused). I followed the activation steps in the booklet that came with the SIM. No agent code needed and I paid $5.34 for the SIM.
NOTE: This only works if you already have a compatible phone with AWS bands. I don't know about activating a newly bought phone on this plan.
Wasn't me!! I didn't do it!
I'm moving back to DC this summer (from Beijing) and I want to get on this plan. But I lost my phone the other day and need something for the next 3 months.
Q: Is there any Android/ICS international phone I can buy that can be hacked to work with Tmobile HSPA+? I'd say the HTC One S would be perfect for me, but I don't think you can get the one with TMobile 1700 CDMA band.

Is the Google's Galaxy Nexus an "international" phone? That may be an option.
Considering changing to this plan...
Has anybody tried tethering on this plan? Also, any non-overage related throttling to report?

Generally, no. Some hacking has been done on AT&T-branded phones (e.g. Galaxy Note) to get them to work with T-Mobile's 3G. However, most phones are incapable of this. Saying 1700 band is a bit misleading - as there are a couple 1700MHz bands that are not AWS (i.e. T-Mobile USA).
So far, all of the Nexus phones (GSM versions, excluding "a" variants which support AT&T's 3G) work with the AWS band. A few others like the Sensation and Evo 3D come to mind.
Your options will be limited because the AWS band is fairly unpopular. Most manufacturers don't bother with it as it's used only on the less-popular networks of the U.S. and Canada - nowhere else.

Straight Talk Quality

This is more of a question about user experience. I have had some people tell me that it is a great service alternative for anyone using an unlocked cell phone, like the gsm gnex, but I have also heard a few horror stories.
One would be a friend got double charged for one month, was refused a refund, and had terrible signal quality anywhere he went. (he used an att compatible sim and he was living in the northern area of florida.)
Any one out there have similar experience in poor customer service and signal ability/quality? My plan is to cut off my contract, buy a gsm nexus and go forward with straight talk.
I was on AT&T Straight Talk and hated it. The signal was poor and data speeds are slow. If you use even a little bit of data, Straight Talk will throttle you. The max speed I would get at times is 2mbps and sometimes even as low as 800 kbps, which is ridiculous considering it's supposed to be 4G. Thus, I immediately switch out and back to T-mobile.
I've heard that T-mobile Straight Talk is much better, that people got speeds of up to 8-10 mbps, much better than AT&T's anyways >.>

I've heard stuff like that but my usage on data per month is <1.5gb if that. I mainly use it for browsing, facebook, and app downloads. Now in my area I only have the option to get the AT&T sim package. I'm planning on buying a GSM GNex and trying it out for a month. The worst that could happen is that I have an att compatible 3G+ phone and I can turn around and sell that easy if I stick with verizon.
I guess what I worry most about is call quality, signal strength, and the ability to quick access my favorite websites. If I can get that reliably from straight talk I'll switch. Does anyone think those are too high of requirements?

I don't have T-mobile in my area. No signal coverage really at all. All that I could possibly get is 2g (edge) at best.

I had the AT&T sim and you're right on both counts. With the AT&T sim I could barely get 800 kbps. I switched to the T-Mo sim and I've never been below 1700 kbps. BTW, it's not 4G, it's HSPA (3.5G).

That makes me sad. Do you know of any other gsm att 3g alternatives? I am sick of paying $130 a month for 2 lines.
It really depends on where you are. Here's mine from NYC with the AT&T SIM. Also I chose the AT&T SIM because most international phones use AT&T frequencies and also because here in NYC T-Mobile only gets EDGE in a lot of places, including my campus. I work near Radio City Hall/Central Park West and yes data speeds suffer, all the way down to 300-600 kbps, but that's forgivable given the amount of people on the network. My entire building uses AT&T. But again, it depends where YOU live. AT&T tends to have better coverage in most places (they're like Verizon but GSM), while T-Mobile has faster speeds but far less coverage:

Me -- unlocked galaxy nexus on the 30 dollar t-mobile plan, my speeds in my town at work are great.. at my house in the sticks no signal in my house, but cant complain, bout the price,,
wife ( iphone 4 ) oldest daughter ( atrix 4g ) both on straight talk.. and both rock but att coverage is perfect down here so that makes sense,,
Its all bout location,,, but its better than paying out the rear on post paid contracts lol

I'm off contract and really thinking Sprint...w/unlimited Data

Don't you think thats the best choice for big data users?
Yes, its un throttled, and many major markets are getting LTE by April 2013.

i have sprint and want out. 3g is more like whatever is slower than 1x and unless you're in a major market in first lte rollout you won't have it for quite a while, making you stuck on 3g. Wimax hasn't supported many areas and the rollout was slow. research before committing

Wimax is very strong in Chicago too...
i have sprint and am leaving as well. thinking about the note 2 on tmobile but really want an exynos 5250 phone so we'll see if i can hold out till the gs4. either way i'm done with sprint and their crappy network.

I'm on sprint, I have the og epic 4g, wimax was really slow until the devs here figured the epics radio was buggy thanks to samsung. Now I can flash the Nexus modem on to my phone and wimax is amazing, way faster than before and pretty consistent. The evo LTE is having the same problem with their radio right now I believe. Anyways for heavy data users Sprint is great, but it really depends on where you live, figure out what's best for you because crappy data speeds are about as good as throttled data speeds. I hope Samsung does a good job on the note 2 modem.
My experience with Sprint was great till recently. Speeds are horrible and I've had to call twice in two weeks about texts not going through. My wife isn't receiving calls on her Epic Touch. I would seriously reconsider your decision. We will be headed to At&t asap and I plan on picking up a Note 2.

Sprint's data speeds really suck, especially inside buildings.
You might want to get a hotspot and test it out for a month.
Go around the areas you frequent and run speed tests.
Or buy a cheapo Sprint phone off CL and get a month of service. This way you can use it for as long as you wish and then cancel if you don't like the service since you aren't in a contract.
I have yet to ever meet someone who's uttered the phrase, "I'm satisfied with Sprint." Their service problems go back at least 12 years because that's when I used to sell phones with Sprint being one of the carriers.

Welp, maybe we're not meeting in person, but consider this a virtual introduction.
It just so happens I've been with Sprint for the last twelve years & I'm satisfied with Sprint. I'll even go as far as to say, I've had the best experience with Sprint of any carrier. Good quality cellular & data service, customer service has been impressive, & pound for pound, none of the big dogs can beat their pricing (at least not yet). I've had both Verizon & AT&T. Can't speak for T-Mobile, but I'm still with Sprint after 12 years.
And I may be out of line in saying this, but I'm guessing not too many folks go to the retailer specifically just to tell them how great & satisfied they've been with their service or provider, regardless of carrier. Unless they're renewing or accessorizing, they're there because they have a problem with their phone or with the service, with their bill, or with their current carrier/provider & they are looking to switch.
Edit: Sorry OP. To address your question, if I haven't already made it obvious, I do think Sprint is the best choice.

+1 to this from me. 10 years with Sprint. True unlimited data FTW!**

Don't know about U guys but unlimited data feature of sprint is HUGE to me. Right now I have a sprint MiFi and am really ALWAYS satisfied with data speeds....5-9mbps which is fine with me.
Believe me if I had to spend one minute on their 3G I'd bolt.
I have $35mo unlimited data on their MiFi.
Right now while waiting for SGN2 to drop I'm also on prepaid TMobile $30mo 100min talk unlimited data unlinited text.
Sprint is amazing and has some of the best customer service I've ever experienced.

Listen to this guy. Seen replies where sprint can be great or plainly suck ass. Seemms it's location dependent so listen to this guy!
I've had Sprint for about 8 years and I can't stand it.
3G data is miserable. They are going with 1900Mhz LTE network, bad building penetration as opposed to Verizon's 900Mhz. . I'm probably going to Verizon, they rock in Los Angeles. Yes, I'm going to deal with the Devil.
I only pay about $50+tax for the SERO plan, if I switch I will end up paying twice as much for similar plan. SERO is like 500mins, unlimited text and data. I read on my bill it said unlimited data roaming also, but I never have tried that. Still it's too cheap to switch over for me.
UTStarcom probably the absolute worst time to compare sprint with the network upgrades taking place. Living in an area that is nearing halfway completion I can tell you yeah,it's long over due (though they are less then a year behind att's start to their still ongoing lte rollout)
Currently I have both Sprint and Att phones.
Call quality for me in Dallas is awesome...and let is comparable if not faster.
We still have the same issues we have always had on att...and speeds slowing compared to when lte went live in Dallas last October
Both have made huge customer service improvements and both are actively working on their network
That being said...check s4g4u.com for speculated upgrade schedule, compare prices w/usage habbits and make a decision.
For me...the unlimited data is a no brainer...but I live in a strong sprint market

i agree with you guys. just got done talking to tmobile. i think ill get the galaxy note 2 with them. idc that its only hspa+ 42mbps, that holds its own with the lte networks now anyway. plus, theyll cheaper than what i pay sprint
Just check your local area, graba phone from both and prepaay to test it out.
I hate ATT, because I pay 160 a month for 2 phones, and could be paying 100 with someone else.
Sprint sucks. I've been with all 4 major carriers. For where I live in my state I'd put it in this order.
1. Verizon Wireless
2. T-Mobile (Now true unlimited, NO throttling)
3. at&t (A lot of dropped calls)
4. Prepaid carriers
5. Sprint (Unusable data speeds) and I had wimax with them, it wasn't impressive, maybe 1mb download speeds, for 4G that sucks. I would get some of my texts and calls really late. Like a day or two later. I was like wtf? This voicemail was from 3 days ago? I will never go back to Sprint.

[Q] Nexus 4 off-contract on AT&T

I currently have Verizon but plan on dropping them once I get the Nexus 4. How do I use this phone on AT&T if I've never had service with them? Is that even possible to do or is prepaid my only option?
Walk into an att store. Pick either a post paid or prepaid rate plan. Purchase an att microsim. Walk out.

If you have an employee discount (FAN Discount), you HAVE to be placed into a contract.
not to derail your thread, but I'm curious, if you walk into the ATT store and have an account with them, will they give you a micro SD card for the nexus 4?

I called and they said yes. Free of charge... I'm still just gonna cut One tho. Already printed the template.
Wait, you're an AT&T employee using Verizon?
If it weren't for the whole employee thing, I'd say T-Mobile is a much better option.
Sorry if this has been mentioned in another thread somewhere, it's 5:23am here and I'm about to crash; how much is it off contract and is it going to be sim locked..?
Better answer than AT&T is to get Straight Talk -- same towers, same service only cheaper. $45/mo unlimited. Unless you get a big corporate discount...
Tmo internet speeds are better if you're in a place where it has good service, but often that is not the case. Actually, you can choose between Tmo and AT&T service on Straight Talk.
Not to derail or anything, but can anyone running the N4 on AT&T give some feedback on HSPA+ speeds?
I'm really trying to decide what to do... considering jumping ship from AT&T to Tmobile, but their reception is apparently crap according to my friends and parents who were on T-mobile and are now all on AT&T. But AT&T is so expensive, and will throttle my grandfathered "unlimited" data plan after 5GB anyways and the N4 doesn't even have LTE and we have to pay 300/350 for it off contract...

+1 on that. I'm using Straight Talk Sim program on my AHD right now, and won't even consider any other available options.
It's by far the best option available right now!

In Chicago, Tmobile has by far the ****tiest reception. Absolute garbage.
I have straight talk with att sim i get 5-7 down and 2 up with my old lumina 900 so. I also have had tmobile b4 here where i live get about the same.
---------- Post added at 08:16 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:14 AM ----------
straight talk doesn't allow streaming of any kind or tethering. I don't stream anything so doesn't bother me.

Thank you for the feedback... that's alarming considering its CHICAGO, one of the biggest metropolitan areas in the country... maybe it's all your tall buildings?
The Nexus 4 is such an uneconomical choice for USA AT&T.
will a 3g(HSPA) sim card work for the Nexus 4?
I have the Inspire 4g(not really 4g).

Nope, it's the same in Lincoln Park, Lake view, and Hyde Park which are all low-midrise. Downtown reception is actually not any worse; it's just as poor. I'm not sure how other carriers' reception is in Chicago, but I can assure you that it is not tall buildings. I've visited Toronto a few times, and used a temporary sim from Fido. It worked great. Reception was really good (except in the subways, but that's to be expected).

When I went into my local store and spoke with a sales associate, they told me all I had to do was switch my 3G sim card for a micro sim and everything would work fine with any phone regardless of speed. For example, there was no special LTE package or LTE compatible plan I needed if I had wanted an LTE phone.
You might need to get your 3G sim card converted to a HSPA+ compatible micro SIM.... but I can't verify that.

False. I get excellent coverage. Good speeds as well. Just tested at 9mbps down 1.6 up.
