I'm a dummy with this stuff, does this open the doors up for the possibility of obtaining root?

Doubt it. It's kernel source code

You can get root with any version besides the Retail AT&T and Retail Verizon models. As far as I know, no one is working on a root exploit for those.

Could you explain this is laymen terms? Are you saying that one must flash a rogers software on att/verizon version in order to obtain root? If so is it or would it be possible to go back to your original stock version... So, I am going out on a limb and say that development will be bigger on the dev edition

You cannot flash firmware for another variant with a locked bootloader.
Development will be bigger on the Developer Edition, yes. However, more will come from developers on T-Mobile, Sprint, US Cellular, Rogers, any Brazilian carrier, etc.

Wouldn't the same root exploit for the Mini, Ultra, and Maxx work on the moto X?
I'd assume someone would work on those.
It should be compatible since it's the same hardware and OS.

That's quite an assumption, hombre.

The kernel source for Ultra is the same kernel source for MotoX, only little changes in panel code and makefile.

Are you, good Sir, optimistic about the prospect of a root exploit being discovered for the AT&T & VZW devices?

What epinter is saying is if a root exploit is discovered for the Ultra then it can easily be modified to gain root on the Moto X.
I might give it a shot compiling this kernel. But before that I need the stock kernel.. can anyone please give that to me??
ps-- I dont own this phone. Just doing for getting more experience and learning purposes

actually, yes, you can, as long as it's signed.
Well with the kernel source out in the wild we can expect some interesting things here soon, I will be on the watch constantly now.
I expect more cogent hypotheses about root to come for the other models now that we have developer editions out and the kernel source. Being on sprint, I'm already unlocked and waiting for the freight train of development(one hopes).

I also thought it was funny when I read this, I think the odds of a root exploit are much better than obtaining a signed file... Not meant for your device lol.

I rooted my Verizon S5 yesterday with TowelRoot and want to put a new ROM on it because, lets face it, Touchwiz blows. Anybody care to explain to me how to do it? Thanks in advance.
You can't. The bootloader has yet to be unlocked.
Really? Damn that sucks. Can you explain that to me too? Please

What Is Bootloader?
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...-bootloader-on-android-phones-complete-guide/
Bootloader unlocking should not be confused with Android rooting.
Oooh okay, so just because the device is rooted, the bootloader is still locked. Also, just as the roots for each carrier's device is different, the bootloaders are as well?

My contract just expired so got an unlock code from AT&T, but it doesn't work. According to the instruction email, it won't work on a rooted device.
Does anyone have experience, if I odin to stock, would the unlock code work, and if the phone would stay unlocked if I flash a custom ROM?
Also, could anyone post the files to odin to MDL? The link it the thread that had it no longer works.
Thanks.

You cant unlock with at&t sim!!
You need tmobile sim card to unlock. If you tried already go head back to stock do unlock aim with different carried sim then flash what ever rom you want.
Good luck

Thanks. Luckily I have a Peruvian SIM card, from when I traveled, I used that to trigger the code and failed twice to unlock. I know I only have 5 attempts total so I wanted to make sure to get it right the next time. Did you tried just unrooting on your custom ROM? I'm wondering if that would be enough or going back to stop is required.

I would bet it's for the dev edition only as the locked bootloader and write protection would overwrite anything including recovery partition. The only other thing would be it fails to install even with temp root because of locked bootloader.
Would it still do that even flashing with odin

You can't use that with a lock bootloader... Just because they officially supported means nothing. This is for the dev version. If you attempt to flash this you will trip Knox and soft brick your phone

I'm sure this has been answered but I can't find it so I've got to ask. Do we KNOW or How do we KNOW that the Verizon Note Edge is write protected? I know there are several dev's working on the Verizon and AT&T Note 4 and they have done whatever it is that they do to KNOW it is protected. I know the Note 4 and the Edge are very similar and it's likely that if the Note 4 is write protected that the Note Edge is as well but since I don't know of a dev that's working specifically on the Verizon Note Edge I'm wondering if it's been checked out. I'm asking this because of the fact that the S6 wasn't protected, so as far as I can tell only the Note 4 (and likely the Edge) have fallen prey to this practice. If the Verizon Note Edge has a locked bootloader but is not write protected, could we use King root to gain temp root and then follow the instructions in the OP to get a custom recovery? Just making sure we are not missing something easy.
I am new to Samsung I have used Htc and I cant understand anything Tmobile and want to know is the bootloader Unlocked How to install Rom root device and on plzzzz Help

You need to ask that on the T Mobile section. This is international section, no one owns a T Mobile version here.

Yes, the bootloader is unlocked....sort of. If you are on 5.1.1 DOK2 and above, you cannot go back to 4.4.4 or 5.0.1. See the tmobile section for guides for each version of the software but, generally, yes you can flash twrp and then a rom of your choice.
