I rooted my Verizon S5 yesterday with TowelRoot and want to put a new ROM on it because, lets face it, Touchwiz blows. Anybody care to explain to me how to do it? Thanks in advance.
You can't. The bootloader has yet to be unlocked.
Really? Damn that sucks. Can you explain that to me too? Please

What Is Bootloader?
http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile...-bootloader-on-android-phones-complete-guide/
Bootloader unlocking should not be confused with Android rooting.
Oooh okay, so just because the device is rooted, the bootloader is still locked. Also, just as the roots for each carrier's device is different, the bootloaders are as well?

This must have been asked before in other threads, but just to get up to speed here ...
Do we know if the bootloader on the SPH-L720 can be flashed?
I know AT&T and Verizon haven't been cracked yet, but I'm hoping the Sprint model has.
Any details? Thanks!
-- Andy
The boot loader is cracked by default. No worries. With sprint you can crack flash until device blows up.
No

None of the bootloaders are cracked. We received a leak and sprint hasn't messed with us since. There is a big difference between cracked and leaked.

The Sprint GS4 has an unlocked bootloader. No leaks required. The fact that you can Odin a custom recovery and flash a rom right out of the box without even rooting should tell you everything you need to know.

So I can go ahead and get the L720 and do all the rooting and custom bootloading,
without having to worry if it's possible, like those Verizon folks?
This is awesome! I hope Josh is working on an S4 JellyBomb.

For the life of me I thought you could only install stock modified Roms until the boot loader was unlocked then you could install custom roms. But I see people installing custom Roms and the bootloader is still locked or am I missing something. Confused

Loki is what is used to help you root and basically let you bypass the boot loader so you can install the custom ROMS. It is probably a bit more technical than that but that is what it does in simple terms. You use this until the bootloader is actually unlocked.
I'm sure someone can chime in and give you a more technical answer. Research it.

Are you on TMo? Be patient. It will probably come. It is still early in the game.
I recently received the ota 4.3 update for my at&t gs4, but I've been dying to try cyanogen mod on my phone or at least be able to remove a little bloatware. Could anyone point me to a tutorial somewhere to root this thing if it's possible yet? I do have a little experience with flashing roms and rooting with my old samsung replenish, but only with odin... thanks.
-EDIT Also is kingo really malware like many people on xda say? And does kingo work with the new MJ9 build for AT&T's S4?
If you have a little experience flashing Roms than you'll be experienced in the art of Google search. There are many threads about this already
Use this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2531704
Works the same for att even though its for verizon. Same root method but beware it could add malicious stuff to your phone and computer. Do a little researching first before you do anything. Good luck

And even when your rooted there is still no custom recovery for 4.3...so no rom flashes are possible

Maybe. When someone smarter than I am comes up with a way to unlock the bootloader or other exploit.

Thanks for the link to the tutorial. I've been looking stuff up about vroot and apparently it contains some sort of trojan... I also read a comment on YouTube where someone with the at&t MJ9 build had success with it but what are the risks other than bricking?
I want to switch from the s4. the main thing killing development there is the damn locked bootloader. does the g2 have the same problem or are all otas unlockable? (this would be for Verizon)

I can't speak for all variants of the G2, but as a Verizon user I can confirm that the bootloader is locked. With that said, there is an exploit to get around this. Check out the development section for more info.

ours is technically locked, but due to a workaround (that I don't really understand) it might as well not be. we flash roms, mods, radios, and kernals all with very few problems.

You sound just like me I was wondering the same thing before I got rid of my s4 but yes there is a way to get a custom recovery and flash custom ROMs unlike on the s4

yes it is locked on every variant (bar sprint). But that does not matter for ROM's and recovery, as they are lokified. :victory:

I JUST got my G-Note 3 Flashed, at a Local Device Center, with 4.4.2. Kingo Root would NOT root it.
Towelroot made quick work of it. Good Stuff.
Bootloader remains locked (of course).
It works just fine i use this on my ATT S5

Much thanks again Geohot!!!
