Google Play Music songs after wipe - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Did anyone know how to keep Play Music songs downloaded after full wipe?
I know full wipe erases everything under /data, where music is located, but maybe there is a workaround to save music on main storage or any other dir instead of /data.

Not possible if your doing a full wipe.

[Q] apk data directory

Does anyone know of a way to change the data directory of an apk. I'm referring to whats in /sdcard/Android/data/
Specifically what i'm trying to accomplish is for Google Music to use the external sd rather than the internal for it's cache.

[Q] Will a factory reset or flashing a ROM erase my EMMC-files?

I'm thinking about wiping my Nook since I can't get WiFisleep to work anymore. But what will happen to all my books and comics stored on the EMMC then? I'm running cyanogen 7 from the internal memory with no traces of BN(the first thing you get when you boot is a small cyanogen logo). Do I have to back all those files up?
If you wipe data and Dalvik you most likely lose those files (depending on where you have stored this files to save). I would suggest backing them up to your uSD to be safe for now.

Wiping Davlik will not delete those files. I wipe it every time I upgrade to a higher nightly. In fact, it is all that I wipe. The real question is will an update or reflash solve the problem? If it were me, I would flash an update using ROM Manager, wiping Davlik and including gaaps in the update. If that does not solve the issue I would then start from scratch since a system wipe will be needed. However, backing up the apps first using Titanium Backup (but not system settings) will get you back after the new flash.
pat is right, wipe Dalvik doesn't touch files but skeeter also right as wipe /data, everything most likely gone with the wind

Wiping /data will indeed wipe all downloaded applications and their associated settings but I think the OP is referring to media files stored on the emmc partition and this will not be touched by a data, system or cache wipe, just like SD card contents won't be touched.
I store some basic media files on internal emmc making use of about 4GB spare capacity. This gets scanned as well as the stuff stored on SD.

Odd storage problem

Hey Guys,
Something seems to be wrong with my storage. As you can see in the picture below I should have ~3,5GB free space and not just 807MB. I tried flashing previous versions and the newest version of cm10.1 but nothing changed. Ziddeys patch for otg support also seems not to be responsible. I thougt about making a nandroid backup + factory reset but I think that the backup would, if the factory reset should solve the problem, bring the problem back or am I wrong?
Thanks for help!

Well factory reset only wipes /data and /cache, it won't touch /data/media (basically your user space). To clear that up for good you need to actually "Format Data" (In Recovery), but you'd want to back up everything off of it and onto your computer first.
Also that graph can only graph what it knows about, if there are some hidden folders/files (or if .nomedia also applies to it) then it won't report that as used.

Thanks a lot will give a try when I'm back at home!
Format Data solved the problem! Thank you very very much!
Do you by chance use google music? I too have this issue, my theory so far is music the google music caches takes up storage space but isn't read as media by the system (perhaps so it doesn't turn up in other media players).
No idea if this is right though, just an idea...
No I don't use google music. I'm using apollo and i realy don't know what caused this issue on my nex. Maybe dirty flashing?

It's possible, some apps have .nomedia files placed into their folder to prevent media scanner from detecting and showing in other apps. Though Google music should report it's usage as an app to storage, as the size it shows under manage apps includes the cache and pinned music.

[Q] GPE and CM12 use different partitions to store app data?

I had Asphalt 8 installed on my phone while running a GPE rom. Then I decided to try CM12 out. So I got the rom, wiped everthing (except internal) and flashed the rom. When I restored the game using Titanium Backup it asked me to download the data again. I, of course, thought it's because of the wipe.
After some time I got bored of the game and deleted it (including the data). Then I wanted to go back to the GPE rom. So I got the latest zip, wiped everything (except internal) and flashed. Next thing I know is that the Asphalt 8 game data is back in the /android/obb folder, even though I deleted it.
So I guess GPE and CM12 use different partitions for this or how is it possible?
And how can I access those "hidden" partitions to delete the data from them? Without changing roms back and forth. Cause, even though I can't see the files and folders on the internal memory, it still uses the space.
Google likely restored the data from the data backup they take of the phone, if you agree to it when setting up your Google account. Simply delete the game again, and this time remove it from your app list in the Play Store. The next time around it shouldn't restore.

They restored 1+ GB of data without me knowing? And without an internet connection? As I was not connected to a wi-fi. I usually also opt, at rom set-up, to not have my stuff backed up to googles servers.
So that's very unlikely.
And even if it were so, why do those files take space on my internal starge?
The MicroSD card is intended for your stuff, not app data. Therefore, to adhere to Google guidelines apps store their parts in internal storage. Now, if you didn't have data of any kind active and opted out of Google backing up data, the only possibilities I can think of are that Titanium Backup didn't delete the data, or the internal storage was not fully wiped.

I already said that I generally don't wipe the internal storage. I deleted data folder manually using ES File Explorer and emptied the recycle bin while on CM12. On GPE the data was back.
I did the math. Everything on my internal memory combined uses about 1 GB. But it shows me that it has 4GB used. So I went back to GPE, deleted the game data manually, and flashed CM12 back. Now it shows 1 GB used space on the internal memory.
Let me give you another example. A friend had GTA: San Andreas while on GPE. I flashed CM12 on that phone, but did not delete the game data, nor wiped the internal storage, just a simple /cache, /data and /dalvik-cache wipe.
On CM12 she didn't install GTA anymore and there is no trace of the GTA data folder in /android/obb.
Here is the thing: Something is taking up nearly 5 GB on the internal storage. I checked every folder in the internal storage (hidden and visible) and everything combined adds up to a max of 1.5 GB.
Something is using space. That something is the GTA data. It has almost 3 GB of data. Fits perfectly to the used space.
The only explanation I have is that they use different partitions of the internal memory or a different data format. Otherwise I can't explain how the same data doesn't show up on GPE and CM12 if I didn't delete it.

Best way to reset my phone?

Hey, my phone's been a mess recently... Laggy, notifications coming hours late, or repeating over and over, the play store downloading but not installing apps for hours... I want too start fresh but it's been a while since I've done this. Is there a way to reset while not deleting the files ie, pictures, music, etc? I know I'll have to reinstall apps, but I'm worried about resetting.

Assuming you are rooted with an unlocked bootloader you can backup your apps with titanium backup and then wipe system, data, cache and dalvik/art cache. Then you can flash a rom and gapps etc. If you want to keep you files like pictures and videos and music then you can transfer via cable to your pc. The folders will be called DCIM, Music and Pictures. They can be transferred back once you have reset.
