Best way to reset my phone? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey, my phone's been a mess recently... Laggy, notifications coming hours late, or repeating over and over, the play store downloading but not installing apps for hours... I want too start fresh but it's been a while since I've done this. Is there a way to reset while not deleting the files ie, pictures, music, etc? I know I'll have to reinstall apps, but I'm worried about resetting.

Assuming you are rooted with an unlocked bootloader you can backup your apps with titanium backup and then wipe system, data, cache and dalvik/art cache. Then you can flash a rom and gapps etc. If you want to keep you files like pictures and videos and music then you can transfer via cable to your pc. The folders will be called DCIM, Music and Pictures. They can be transferred back once you have reset.

[Q] Wiping all data

I recently moved from AOKP to PACMAN. After flashing pacman successfully all my gallery and media files were still there.
After that I even did factory reset. Still files are there. free space is just 7GB or something.
I had Asphalt 7 installed in AOKP, I believe its still eating huge space in PACMAN.
How can I wipe that data (including old app data and some trash) without damaging ROM installed?

I just flashed new rom, so old apps are not showing in Setting/Apps.
Just after flashing ROM, how much space it suppose to consume?

rom file was 162MB. I deleted that zip file.
I'm just worried about losing so much space.

Asphalt's a Gameloft game right? If so, then you should be able to delete all gameloft data fairly easily by finding the /gameloft folder (should be on the root of your SD) and deleting it. I don't see how it would break anything to do with the ROM, the worst case scenario is just that you lose some game data.

Odd storage problem

Hey Guys,
Something seems to be wrong with my storage. As you can see in the picture below I should have ~3,5GB free space and not just 807MB. I tried flashing previous versions and the newest version of cm10.1 but nothing changed. Ziddeys patch for otg support also seems not to be responsible. I thougt about making a nandroid backup + factory reset but I think that the backup would, if the factory reset should solve the problem, bring the problem back or am I wrong?
Thanks for help!

Well factory reset only wipes /data and /cache, it won't touch /data/media (basically your user space). To clear that up for good you need to actually "Format Data" (In Recovery), but you'd want to back up everything off of it and onto your computer first.
Also that graph can only graph what it knows about, if there are some hidden folders/files (or if .nomedia also applies to it) then it won't report that as used.

Format Data solved the problem! Thank you very very much!
Do you by chance use google music? I too have this issue, my theory so far is music the google music caches takes up storage space but isn't read as media by the system (perhaps so it doesn't turn up in other media players).
No idea if this is right though, just an idea...
No I don't use google music. I'm using apollo and i realy don't know what caused this issue on my nex. Maybe dirty flashing?

It's possible, some apps have .nomedia files placed into their folder to prevent media scanner from detecting and showing in other apps. Though Google music should report it's usage as an app to storage, as the size it shows under manage apps includes the cache and pinned music.

Nexus 4 Factory Reset - ALL memory wiped?

OK this seems like a silly question but when I Google Nexus 4 factory reset, all I get are instructions on how to do this, and the warning that all memory will be wiped, to include pictures, videos, etc.
When you perform FR (hardwipe or regular) on the Nexus 4, does it wipe the sdcard folder? I went into the menu to do this, and was surprised to see that it says it would--I'm used to having a separate SD card in my Nexus S, and as such I never needed to backup all that extra stuff. It was way more convenient to FR the phone and simply redownload the apps I used. Even the save data from those apps would stored on the SD card and be ready to go.

From my experience, it erases everything on sdcard0. With an phone that has a external memory slot, it would be sdcard1 which is not erased during a reset.

The one thing you have to remember, if you do a factory reset via settings, it will wipe everything! If you do a factory reset via the recovery, it will wipe Data, Cache, Dalvik, but NOT your sdcard or System. This is using TWRP as the custom recovery btw. The reason it doesn't wipe the system is when you flash a custom rom, the system will be wiped automatically.
Edit: Using cwm recovery, a factory reset doesn't wipe your sdcard as well.

[Q] I want to wipe internal storage

Hi
I want to wipe my device's internal storage but I have some questions about it first:
Do I just need to tick wipe internal storage on TWRP?
Will it influence my ROM?
If it won't, will I be able to use the GApps?
Thanks in advance guys
That'll work, but be careful. It'll wipe all your data and any stored backups, including nandroids, tibu, etc. It won't wipe the Google apps.

One more thing:
Will the device add the missing default folders (Download, Music, etc)?

Idk, I never formatted just the internal. You might have to reflash the rom. Or they'll be added when they're needed. I know they come back there somehow but after you format you might not see then on your pc. If you go ahead with it let me know. I'd like to know for the future.

Hello, i am gonna answer your questions one by one
1. by apps positions if you mean the apps on the screens of the android then they are gonna moved after format, even after restore your backup. second you are gonna need titanium backup from playstore. Since you have root download lucky patcher from your browser or from your pc and patch the titanium backup you just downloaded from PlayStore .. and then select backup your apps, i suggest you to backup the on a usb with the adapter from the box of your phone , or on a sd card, be carefull do not wipe them . the contacts you can go to the Contacts apps and on the settings back them up to your Sd Card or to your Usb Otg.. Unless if you have them moved on your Sim Card then no need to backup them
..
Your videos and your other personal data move them all from the internal storage to your Usb or to Sd card too ..
2. you dont need to unroot your device to update your device, which methods are you gonna use to upgrade your phone? firmware from odin ? You are gonna need to root your device after the update then .
3. if you use titanium backup then you are gonna find the restore option on the app . your personal data from your usb or sd you are need to move them on your internal storage , and restore the contacts.
Get titanium, backup needed apps on external sd. Instal twrp through odin, insall custom rom like alexega or sac (wipe system and data before or some roms already offer this options).
Later restore backups of needed apps through titanium. All files on sd card/s will remain after new rom installation (if you are unsure backup your media files to computer), just dont wipe media/internal sd. Forget about restoring full backup, if you have a lot of rubbish code flowing around you need get rid of it, just back up apps with data that are important. That's how you should do it.
Ps: Ideally everyone should format data once 3 months and restore backups of needed apps later, it's the only way to keep it in excellent working condition

Thank you so much !!
Also while we are at it!
What's the difference between wipe and format
So I got the oem lock thing and i have to wait 7 days etc
So when I get the poem unlock I'll be rooting my device
But to install tarp and magisk I have to "wipe" data
What exactly will be wiped?
My pictures and videos or apps or what exactly so I know before rooting

It's same but it very differnt. it's confusing. Format data in this case applies to full data wipe. While if you go to twrp wipe menu and choose to wipe data, it won't touch media (folder with all user files) folder in data. While format will erase all patrition and reformat it.
All will be deleted, since it's full data wipe with media. Just data wipe without media deletes just apps. You won't need to install magisk or su separately if you install custom rom like i mentioned.

Well I ended up installing the official rom for oreo I'm waiting for oem unlock soon, I wanna install twrp and root using magisk, but one of the requirement is to "wipe" in this case it's just the apps? I'm gonna backup just in case anyway! But I want to make sure
All will be deleted no reason to make surerer. I hope you understood titanium part, although i recommend it only if you have important apps, with data that i use (i have only a few), otherwise throw them out.
Then after you installl, you can make full backup of data through twrp. I usually do it after a week i installed rom i choose, and if i install a lot of apps i no longer need, and overall android gets slower, i just restore this back up and always have os that is 1 week old without any setting up to do. After just a couple of apps i restore recent data to them with titanium. If you had this with phone it becomes problematic as you said, i suggest you to remember how to do it.
