I want to wipe my device's internal storage but I have some questions about it first:
Do I just need to tick wipe internal storage on TWRP?
Will it influence my ROM?
If it won't, will I be able to use the GApps?

That'll work, but be careful. It'll wipe all your data and any stored backups, including nandroids, tibu, etc. It won't wipe the Google apps.

Idk, I never formatted just the internal. You might have to reflash the rom. Or they'll be added when they're needed. I know they come back there somehow but after you format you might not see then on your pc. If you go ahead with it let me know. I'd like to know for the future.

I did it yesterday and it deleted all of my internal storage and after some time, the default folders came back
Use Advanced Wipe in TWRP

searched around and can't really find right answers.
I currently have HD2 with 512mb running android. Due to the lack of internal storage space, all apps are stored in the EXT4 on the SD card. This is a very neat function actually. Every time I flash a rom, all the apps will still be there.
I am about to get the DHD soon and since it's got plenty internal storage I guess it's natural to install app on internal rather than on SD (i know some rom do have support for EXT on SD). My question is, is there a way to partition the internal storage so part of it act as EXT, this way every time flashing a rom I don't have to restore all the apps??
If there is another way to achieve this, please let me know as well.

No need to do anything like that. Before you flash a new ROM just wipe all the partitions apart from the data partition. Once you have flashed the ROM your apps will still be there.
You can use an add on script for apps to SD as well if you prefer.

Good to know that there will be no problem re-installing apps. Since I can't get hands dirty with an actual unit yet, could you please explain a little on the "wiping all the partitions apart from data partition". So by default, apps will be installed in a separate partition? what do you use to WIPE paritions? Clockwork or wipe-all?
Go into clockwork recovery you can select which partitions to wipe. Go into the mounts part and you can wipe them individually, wipe each one in turn apart from the data partition.
If however you experience problems yo. May have to wipe the data partition. Just do a backup first.

Some roms require a full wipe/factory reset before installing. Of course that will delete all apps including the one that I bought. Do I need to buy them again?
Also, will the 'titanium backup' backups the destop settings (i.e., the app shortcuts created on main screen)?

Some launchers let you backup icon placements and such on the home screen. Also, as long as you use the same Google account you originally bought stuff from Google Play with on your new ROM or any other devic, you can download it again for free. Also Titanium Backup is an incredible app that will backup apps settings as well, so if you are thinking of getting it, go for the paid version, it's worth a least 4 times as much as it costs.

Thanks for the reply. I bought TitaniumB already. But, if I do a full wipe, I actually also delete the Titanium app and the file it backuped, didn't I?

Not if you leave the "sdcard" partition alone. You can wipe data and keep that data (which has your TB info) intact. Same goes for any backups/nandroids you performed with TWRP or CWR.

It might be a stupid question, but What is TB short for? Also, the Nexus 7 only has one internal 'sdcard', by partition, did you mean that I could set many partitions like what we do under windows (i.e., C: , D: , E: ) ?
TB is titanium backup but I would just use es file explorer or something similar to back up the apps to the sd card

You can but that's a totally different question/thread/answer. LOL What you want is to just flash a new rom after a wipe and to restore all your apps. It is ok to wipe your device, just do NOT wipe the internal SD card. That will wipe the rom you want to flash and other goodies. Another tip is to create an update.zip of your titanium backup program so that when you first flash your ROM, you can flash the update.zip right after. In Titanium backup, hit menu-"create update.zip". This will place the update.zip (titanium backup program) on your internal SDcard so you can flash it later.
Please delete the update.zip after you have your device up and running to avoid any confusions down the road. You can create the titanium backup "zip" file at any time and takes seconds to do. GL

I thought a full wipe would delete all user data (apps and all files) and was afraid to try to do the full wipe. Obversly, I was wrong. The wipe doesn't delete everything.

Nope the rom's data partition is seperate from the sdcard partition. A regular wipe of the data, cache, dalvic cache, and system doesn't delete the storage (sdcard) partition, they're kept seperate for that reason among others.
You have to actually tell it to wipe the sdcard partition in order to wipe it. Also, note that in recovery, wiping the data and cache partition is sometimes called "factory reset". I know in TWRP recovery it is, not sure about clockwork. If you know you're in recovery, the factory reset is perfectly safe, it only wipes data and cache. It's completely seperate from similar options that are in the rom (in settings) or in the factory bootloader.
When you see us referring to "Make sure you wipe completely" it's probably confusing, but we aren't referring to the sdcard and external storage. We are just referring to what's necessary for a proper rom install, which is data, system, dalvic cache, and cache.

I just tried a ROM for the first time on my Nexus 7 (though I've used a lot on my past phones) and holy ****, coming from a non-Nexus device, I wasn't expect this, it wiped out my internal storage partition (/sdcard) as well as my data partition.
Losing the international storage partition is really painful, as that's where all my clockworkmod backups were.
Does this happen every time a ROM is flashed on a Nexus 7? (In case it makes a difference, this is the ROM I flashed.) Does this happen every time an update to a ROM is flashed?
For future reference, is there any way to try ROMs and flash updates without wiping out my whole internal storage?

So what do people normally do when an update to a ROM comes out? Do they fully backup everything and then do an advanced restore in CWM to get back their data? Or are most people starting fresh on every ROM update?

What?
A rom shouldn't wipe the Emmc (internal sdcard), coming from Samsung phones that all have 16gb of internal storage plus a slot for an external card, i have never had it wipe my storage. Either internal or external.
I have also flashed a few roms on the Nexus and the ONLY thing that wiped my storage was unlocking the bootloader.

Based on my experience with the original Droid, flashing a new rom usually calls for wiping system, cache, data, boot, and dalvik. Internal memory data is deleted, but external microsd storage is not cleared. The N7 only has internal memory, and that is cleared when doing the wipes prior to installing a new rom. You should copy pictures, video, documents, downloads, music, saved texts, etc. to a pc or OTG storage along with the backups before the new rom.
Wiping system and data in recovery does not touch /sdcard. sdcard should remain intact unless flashing a factory image.

If you want to be completely and absolutely sure it will not delete anything, open the zip go to:
META-INF/com/Google/android and open up the updater-script file in a text editor, look through and you will see every command that is given in the flash.
You will most likely only see it format the /system partition. Which is why you manually have to do a factory reset in recovery, which formats
/data (where your user apps and preferences are stored, as well as the dalvik cache is)
/cache
And the android secure file which is in fact located on the Emmc, but that is the only file on that partition it touches.

@manekineko @studacris Can you please elaborate, what do you mean by that ? I am intending to flash a different ROM on a different device.I extracted the firmware zip and checked every file but couldn't find "wipe (-w) in fastboot with system.img".

Okay,, i have a note 10.1 n8010 and EVERYTIME I FLASH a rom i cant install any apps and it says insufficient storage, I do everything step by step, I don't understand, I just don't understand!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Can someone please explain me why this is, i wipe everything before doing a update etc...

Try following the below steps as per smaw51 recommendations :
wipe data/factory reset
wipe cache partition
mounts and storage/ format /data
mounts and storage/ format /system
mounts and storage/ format /cache
advanced/ wipe dalvik cache
Repeat a couple times for good measure
I have already tried those steps as I found them online and it does nothing, I always have to delete everything and then return to stock ... I just don't get it >

Oops accidentally thanked you for this post.
Anyways, I have found that wiping data from recovery doesn't clear download files and such. Download Astro File manager and see what is taking up most of your internal memory. I found personally that .zip files and a few things like that were taking up oodles of storage space. Also, when yuo do a CWM backup, do the backup to the External SD card, that way it doesn't take up app space.

like 7gb? and external is 4gb because i have a partition, but the partition in my case is irrelevant because before when I didn't know about link2sd I still had this problem, but everyone else seems to flash roms daily with no issues lol?

okay ill thank you back lol, okay I will back it up externally for future reference, but the issue seems to be on every rom i download with my device...but no one else seems to have this issue with the same rom

I strongly suggest you flash a stock rom using Odin and clear everything. If you still have problems with the stock rom on your tablet return it for warranty repair. My feeling is though it is something you are doing. So once back to stock (out of the box) reinstall apps one at a time - avoid apps to sd and installing them on external memory. I don't believe that can be necessary!

The space used is probably most filled with apps and app data, or movies, music, etc. Nandroid backups dont save that, they only save the system, system data, bootloader, and a couple other things if you choose to. All that data should only take up maybe around 1GB or so, possibly less.
TO upgrade you just install a new version of a ROM that is built from newer source files.

I'm on stock rooted. when Google releases an update, how will I update???
Also, I thought nandroid includes /data,/system, /cache. correct?
If that is incorrect, how will I backup user app data?
I used to be in the nook color community, so I am not used to devices without a SD slot.

Yes you are correct. But the Nandroid still wont end up being 8GB.
You can individually back up app data for things you want to keep with Titanium Backup
