My girlfriend's SM-G900A is sitting on 4.4.2, I think it's supposed to be on 5.1.1 or somewhere near so from what I've read, but can't seem to find a definitive answer on how to get it done. The regular software update method results in it saying "checking AT&T server for update" (which she does have a sub-carrier, GoSmart) and it then says fully up to date. Kies, which I installed on my home PC, also says the same. Is there a way to get this up to at least Lollipop? How is that done?
need to put an at&t sim in it to get it up to date.

Wouldn't be a simple solution for us unfortunately. Any other way?

personal experience was just how you described until I shoved an at&t sim in it; then it updated then & there.
assuming gosmart is similar to tracphone or net10 then I wouldn't anticipate anything other than an at&t sim working. however if you can beg, borrow or steal one for 15 minutes; you'll ge the result you want.

Hello,
Im a verizon customer (only carrier here that actually works and have GREAT coverage). But I wanted a device that I could use to remote my servers that had a great screen and processing power. So as you can probably tell, i flipped when I saw the note and picked up one right away.
But now my problem. I see that there are updates out and such, but I don't have an ATT account. When I go to update the note it just tells me that I don't have a sim card. How can I update my device without a sim card.
I tried to look this up, but didn't get far (I guess most people here have an ATT account or a GSM carrier). So is there anything I can do to update my Note. (I purchase an unlocked one, if that helps any).
Thanks in advance
Ah buy pay as you go sim or borrow one.

I've read that since I have an AT&T Note 3, I would receive updates even tho I'm on cricket. This did not happen for me. I ODINd 4.4.2, and tried to get it to update OTA to 4.4.4 by changing the date forward. It wouldn't update. So on cricket, the N900A DOES NOT receive OTAs (neither has ANY AT&T device I have used on cricket or even on prepaid AT&T service on my tablets)). I got to lollipop via @Walter.White method however so that is not a big deal for me. Just letting other users know.
This is also the case for me while i have this unit on Tmobile.

It Worked
I have been running 5.0 rooted for like a week and a half. I miss xposed. Lollipop battery life is poor when compared to my old 4.4.2 with xposed. The battery stats screen is also crappy, I don't care how much battery is left, I want to know how much has been used for how long. I guess as far as stock rom goes it seemed pretty normal but it is hard to tell as I have a 10,000 Mah zero lemon battery. Lollipop does seem to run nice. I had some issues with google play I think, but they settled after being connected to the internet for awhile. I think there are some things that stuck from xsposed like my network says HOME (I had changed carrier label via Wanam) and also my core cpu min and max frequencies I had set with performance profile?. No frills cpu says that my minimum cpu speed is 1.2 Ghz when I deny root. Anyway I Just decided to downgrade....... 4.4.2 and exposed.
I ran nc2 flasher.
I RESTORED THE BACKUP OF SYSTEM AND DATA THAT I MADE PRIOR TO UPGRADE TO 5.0!
I wiped dalvik and cache? (The two that are least important)
Reboot!
Worked for me
Hoping to try some MOGA......

I'm pretty sure you have to have an AT&T sim card in the phone for it to actually update via OTA, not just an AT&T variant of the phone.

I have found this to be partially true. I have an AT&T sim in my tablet, but it's prepaid and it also isn't receiving updates. So basically, not only does it have to be an AT&T sim, it also has to be postpaid service.

Thanks for the clarification. When I made the statement, I was referring to post-paid service, but I didn't even think about Pre-paid. It's nice to know since I'm thinking about getting my phone unlocked.
Yes, I think it's bull. It doesn't cost anything to them for a direct link off the web. Cricket customers should be able to get updates online. HTC provides up- date links if you're not OTA able
Kies should upgrade the phone, as should a place like best buy..it really isn't a big deal

I bought a Verizon unactivated HTC 10 recently, for my AT&T SIM card (AT&T is not selling HTC 10, and I have a Best Buy gift card, so I had to buy either Verizon or Sprint. Verizon is cheaper.)
The AT&T SIM card works just fine, but there's an annoying notification saying that "SIM card is not from Verizon..." that won't go away.
Other people online (using different phones) suggest disabling "activation manager", but no such app exists.
I already disabled & force stopped any Verizon/Amazon apps.
Does anyone know how to get rid of the notification?
sim unlocking service like this http://www.htcunlockingservice.com/htc-model-unlock-code/htc-10.htm ? there is other companies also. I have no experience with any.
Use any SIM on any GSM Network
With an unlocked HTC 10 you can change carriers without buying a new phone. This means you can take advantage of the best service package for your current needs. Then if your needs change, you can change providers any time.

I know. In the OP, I said that I had to buy a Verizon version because I had a Best Buy gift card. They don't sell unlocked
I understand. but because of that you may have to spend another $10 to get it "unlocked" for your sim card
Or try calling Verizon and see if they'll give you your SIM unlock code for free. They did it for me a few years back when I was preparing for some international travel, but I am also a long-standing customer with a good history on Verizon.

FYI, all of Verizon's postpaid LTE phones have been SIM unlocked since ~2012, including for GSM usage both in the US and internationally. No SIM unlock is needed for the Verizon-branded HTC 10 or any other modern Verizon postpaid LTE device.
It's totally normal for a Verizon ROM to state that an inserted SIM is not a Verizon SIM, it doesn't affect usage of that non-Verizon SIM.

I'm sure dottat's suggestions are the "clean" way of doing this, but the way I got rid of the Sim and Wifi Connected nags are with a handy Xposed

From what I've always understood it shouldn't matter what sim you have in for updates. I have an at&t purchases note 7 with a cricket sim and I can't for the life of me get the new battery icon update. I just bought the phone from best buy Friday and it's got the black square on the box and I checked imei on Sammys sight and this phone is the good battery version. Not too concerned other than if like to be able to receive updates in the future without having to always look around online and manually flash the files. I guess I could use kies?
Edit: Samsung kies3 shows note 7 is not a supported device. So I'm really not sure how to update this phone now without Odin firmware package

well, you always understood is WRONG !
you need a ACTIVE (working) att sim for the update. i also on cricket, i cant get update on any att phones.
i'm thinking of switching to GoPhone, but you have to pay taxes. so it' not worth it.

You need an activated and working ATT sim in the phone in order to get the OTA updates. If you had a cricket version phone, then youd need an active and working cricket SIM. Same thing goes for Tmobile, Sprint, Verizon, etc.
Kies no longer supports Note 7. You need the Smart Switch PC program. Kies even tells you this immediately after telling you that your phone isn't supported.

G935T unlocked-running at&t firmware on att network. Can't get wi-fi calling working!
I posted this over the Tmobile section, but realized it might be a better topic here in the AT&T section...
Sure would like some help from the brilliant minds on this board....
I bought an unlocked G935T a few months ago and have been using it on At&t (with the G935T firmware) for the last few months.
Recently, I needed to use wi-fi calling. Couldn't get it to work on TMo firmware so last night I flashed G935A firmware one it (QF3)
Firmware is working fine - everything seems to be working EXCEPT wi-fi calling. Damn you, AT&T!
I can use one of the free VOIP apps like Google Voice, of course, but when I call out I need to be able to use my cell phone number and really don't want to have to forward calls to GV every time I go into this particular building that doesn't have any cell reception.
Chatting with support this morning, they said it can't be done. I don't understand - if the hardware is the same across all US Variants, then why can't At&t firmware enable this feature? What am I missing??? GRRRRR
You have to run the AT&T firmware to get that feature.

Sorry, I missed that. The next step is to call an actual AT&T rep (at a corporate store) and make sure your SIM is provisioned correctly.

No worries. I actually went into a store yesterday. He pulled up a few threads on his tablet and basically told me it cannot be done. I have used the "please make sure my sim is provisioned correctly" in my conversations with support online and they always say that you can't provision a sim.
Should I just go in and ask for another sim?

It's definitely a SIM or account thing. With the A firmware, it is identical to the phones AT&T sells, so this is a bit of AT&T dickery. Keep escalating it with support until you either get it resolved, or give up all hope.
I forgot to mention that they told me it has to do with IMEI. If it's not an AT&T phone, the IMEI isn't in their database, and won't work. I agree- total dickery.
Yeah, unfortunately it's ultimately a carrier feature, and AT&T has chosen to be jerks about it. I can't imagine they really make that much selling handsets, but this isn't the first time they have pulled this sort of stunt. It's almost as if they are jealous of people calling Verizon the evil empire and decided to strike back.

You have to call ATT and give them the IMEI from any ATT device and that will unlock the wifi calling. Has to be an official ATT device.
