how can I update my note without a sim card - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Hello,
Im a verizon customer (only carrier here that actually works and have GREAT coverage). But I wanted a device that I could use to remote my servers that had a great screen and processing power. So as you can probably tell, i flipped when I saw the note and picked up one right away.
But now my problem. I see that there are updates out and such, but I don't have an ATT account. When I go to update the note it just tells me that I don't have a sim card. How can I update my device without a sim card.
I tried to look this up, but didn't get far (I guess most people here have an ATT account or a GSM carrier). So is there anything I can do to update my Note. (I purchase an unlocked one, if that helps any).
Thanks in advance

Ah buy pay as you go sim or borrow one.

[Q] Sim card

I just purchased an unlocked galaxy note this evening, which is the first unlocked international phone that i have ever purchased and I just thought of a question that I can't find the answer to. Does the Nkte come with a sim card if not how do I get one for use on AT&T? I hope someone can help with my question.
Thanks,
Wrong section. Ask this on Q section please.
Anyway, if im not mistaken i read some where that u need to purchase the sim and the phone with proper plan (im not att customer). Grand father, use as u want on the go plan etc. Purchase the iphone, sell the phone on ebay n use the sim on your Note.
But u will only get edge from this. No 4g or lte..

No SIM card in the box that I know of.
AT&T or any other provider should send you one upon request.

Incorrect, you will get 3g and H+ on ATT, not just edge. T-Mobile will only worth with Edge(2g).
The SIM is always associated with the carrier, so you need to get the SIM from the carrier. If you have a active SIM from your old phone on ATT, use that. If you do not want to buy another phone just to activate it, take the Note into the ATT store and they can get you set up. Just get the correct APN information here before you go in, the people in the store are not always trained to program(input the apn) international phones.
If you plan to keep the Note for a contract period (2 years) The best option is for you to buy a iPhone 4S for $200 and re-sell it only for $600. You will make a very nice profit if you keep your ATT plan for the entire 2 years...and if you do not keep the plan, that extra you made will more then pay for your ETF.

Really? Maybe im wrong then. Anyway, what i know is that (by just reading in xda) is that the 3g, 4g and others only applicable with the phone that u had register with att. They have your imei no. Others than that imei no phone, you will end up throtteling and just can use the edge.
Anyway, dont take my word. Better you go to the att center to get the correct info

People in an ATT Store may or may not be able to help you. They are not always trained to deal with international phones, as US phones are always locked in.
I am using my Note with ATT. You will most certinaly get 3G as I do.

So if I can't get much help with getting the ATT people at a store can I purchase on from ebay. Is it a micro or regular sim card that is used in the note?
Thanks
I had absolutely no problems when I brought my Note into AT&T. They put a new SIM card in and all was good. Just had to put in the correct APN information in and I had 3G and HSPA+. No worries.

For Those Running a Google Play Edition I9505G on AT&T

Hey everyone,
Did anyone register the IMEI for their I9505G with AT&T? If so, did you have any issues with your data plan changing to non-LTE? My GPE S4 will be here tomorrow and I'm worried that when I activate it, AT&T may not see it as an LTE-compatible device and thus limit my data plan to HSPA+ or something. I know when you're dealing with unlocked devices on AT&T, they will change your date plan speeds based on what their records show the device is capable of. So... did anyone have any issue with this or am I worrying over nothing?
Sent from my Xoom using Tapatalk 4
No. I never had any problems. I just asked for a new sim. Nothing more. I was coming from a skyrocket, took the larger sim. No questions were asked. They just got grabbed a new Sim card. Put it in and activated it. LTE workes great for me when I am in it.
Sent from my GT-I9505G using Tapatalk 4
No major problems. It was pretty straightforward. Only problem I had was that the S4 uses a micro SIM card and my old phone used a normal sized one so it didn't fit. One trip into an AT&T store and I was all set.
If you don't want to get a new micro SIM card, I guess there are some ways to trim down a normal card so that it works. Seemed easier to just go down to the store and get a new one and handle the activation in one stop.

Ah. So when you got the new SIM card, did you provide your new IMEI number? Or does AT&T still think you have a Skyrocket?
I have an AT&T GS4 right now, so I currently have an LTE data plan. I know I can just swap the SIM and LTE will work just fine. But say I called AT&T and said "Hey, I don't have that phone anymore and here is the IMEI of my new phone...", that's my question.
Does AT&T see the GPE GS4s as LTE capable in their database? I prefer to keep my IMEIs up to date with my carriers, but I won't update it if it means there's a chance I could lose an LTE data plan due to incorrect info on the I9505G in AT&T's database.
That's why I'm asking if anyone actually has an I9505G IMEI number registered with AT&T and if they had any LTE issues after doing so.

When you got the SIM, did you give them your I9505G IMEI number or do they think you still have your old phone?

I gave them the new IMEI number.
After your two year contract is up, and you unlock your phone, do they turn off LTE? No. Plenty of people bring LTE capable phones to att network. If there is a problem. Make a phone call. They want your money more than they want a lost customer.

I understand that, but when it comes to unlocked devices that AT&T doesn't sell or support, like Nexus devices and, in this case, and I9505G, they sometimes have incorrect information about the phone's capabilities in their IMEI database. That it can lead to problems. But IrishPadres said he gave them the new IMEI and he still had LTE so that answers my entire question. That means that, even though they don't sell the I9505G, they still see it as an LTE capable device.

I just popped my SIM in and was fine. Never called ATT. I was already provisioned for LTE etc. You will only need to worry if you currently do not have a ATT account provisioned for LTE and a SIM. If you need to get a new account and SIM you may need to let them know the IMEI.
perfect
I swapped my sim out of my crappy iPhone 5 with a sim card adapter and no issues ever.

nexus 7 unlock version for future verizon use

hi, i want to purchase the nexus 7 lte but it's important that i be able to use it with my existing verizon data plan (eventually). i've read the threads and understand they will be certifying it (eventually). i don't want to wait to purchase it so i want to make sure i'm buying the correct model (for verizon activation later). i noticed there are 3 versions being sold at google playstore: 1) with AT&T sim, 2) with T-Mobile sim 3) Unlocked. would the unlock version be the correct device to get or will they be coming out with another model, once verizon completes their testing and certifies it? thanks for any advice.

I purchased the Google Nexus 7 LTE (2013) which came with the T-Mobile SIM.
I took my microSIM card out of my Samsung Galaxy S4 (verizon) and put it into my Google Nexus 7 LTE (2013) and verizon LTE data worked fine. I forwarded my Verizon phone number to my Google Voice number, and used the N7LTE as my phone for a week. However, I found that GrooveIP and Talkatone apps would sometimes miss incoming google voice calls even when I was using WiFi for data. So, I moved my verizon microSIM card back to my phone.
It is my understanding that all three models of N7LTE offerred by Google are the exact same tablet. The only difference is which promotional microSIM card is included in the box.
Good Luck,
Howard
P.S. I do not know if Verizon can see that I am using the phone microSIM card in the N7LTE tablet. If Verizon can see this, then it is possible Verizon can take actions like dropping data service or cancelling my account or whatever else one can imagine. I do not know if Verizon can see which device the microSIM card is installed in. I also don't know if Verizon cares or not.

I made that post for new buyers like you. All 3 versions work on all 3 carriers. Buy the t-mobile one since theyre the same price and keep the sim with free 2gb data for a rainy day. You can use your existing sim (microsim) in your new tablet until it is certified, which, knowing verizon, could be a long wait. Just know that if you have a nanosim or a traditional sim card then you will need a cheap adapter.

[Q] using AT&T provided unlock code...

After fighting with AT&T on the phone for almost a month due to (in my opinion) unfair policy changes, I got them to provide me with unlock codes for my and my wife's phones. I want to make use of them asap and put this matter to rest. Unfortunately, the AT&T instructions say to use the codes i have to insert a non-AT&T sim card to force the phone to prompt me for code entry. At this time I do not have a non-AT&T sim. Is there any way to get to the unlock pin screen without having a "foreign" sim card on hand?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you.
Also, does having this unlock code mean I am unlocking the bootloader or is this *just* a sim unlock?
I am considering experimenting with the 'nightly' for CM 10.2. I have CM 10.2 on a Note 8.0 and CM 9 on an original Galaxy Tab 7" already and i like it a lot.
Thanks again.
Won't touch the boot loader at all. That'll just be a Sim unlock.

You'll need a foreign gsm SIM card. And your bootloader stays locked. One has nothing to do with the other

Research it. Then research it some more. Research it until you are comfortable doing it yourself. Don't let someone bully and say you might mess up your phone. You could mess up your phone by dropping it in your sink among other things. But doing this is quite simple. Follow the steps here is even a youtube video to do it. If you have any questions ask away. Some ppl are jerks and say it was answered somewhere else you should of found it elsewhere. When all posts inevitably get buried under mounds and mounds of new posts. Remember you only fail if you stop trying.

You could also head to t-mobile site and get a free SIM, I think they still are giving them away, not sure. I was able to get two free SIMs 5 days ago.

And this guy ^^^ isn't going to fix your phone for you if it does screw up. The "free" unlock method works for some and does not for others. I completely agree with the research until your eyes fall out part, but, in this, case, it still might not help you. So, basically, if you try the "free' unlock method it might work, it might not, and it might mess your phone up. Unfortunately, you won't know until you try. I would just go to your local mall or T-mobile store and get a cheap pre-paid sim card that you can use in your and your wife's phone. Don't listen to people that think something will work for everyone just because it worked for them, especially when it is proven to not be the case. Good luck.
I walked into a tmo store and sled if they had an activated micro Sim so I could test my phones unlock status. I told them I was thinking of switching, but needed to verify if my s4 was unlocked (I used the service menu method).

Would you mind sharing how you got them to unlock your phone, I have been trying for a while now without any success.
When I had my old smartphone, I called att and told them I'd be visiting my sister in London, and that I'd want to use prepaid SIM cards, as it would be cheaper than international rates. They had no problem unlocking it (galaxy s).

Usually no prompt means the phone isn't actually locked. There's a ton of instances when a network simply missed a handset and failed to lock it. For anyone I'd say test your phone first. Make sure it is locked before going through the process of unlocking it.
Also, this works on a number of older Samsung's, not too sure if it'll work on newer models, but you can type a command that targets the network lock, which is #0111*code# - you simply replace "code" with the code AT&T or anyone else gives you and it should unlock the phone. Someone might be able to confirm this as possible or not for the newer Samsung's?
I tried the traveling story. That does not work anymore. CS, including supervisor refused.

If nothing else,it's a good read,as making sure the OP6T is a good choice & all the AT&T functions you want/need will work (WI-FI Calling/VoLTE/VVM,etc....).
Typically, you shouldn't have to do a thing as far as setting the APN.
However,I'm not sure about VoLTE/VVM/WI-FI Calling working,or,if it does, requires any account adjustments/account settings changes/etc..... by AT&T Customer Care.
I have cricket (owned and operated by at&t) and as far as I know service is basically the same. All I had to do was insert the Sim from my old phone and after about a minute everything was working.
I have AT&T and when my 6T arrived I inserted my sim and received service with no issues. For lack of a better phrase it should be plug and play. I did not have AT&T for anything.

That's what I figured, judging by the short time I used AT&T Prepaid a few years back.
What sux is, at least browsing their site as a non-customer, they (AT&T) aren't exactly clear on that.
They try to make it sound as if you need to order (buy) a new SIM Card to use in a different phone, whether it's one of theirs or, a BYOD.

Nope. They don't allow it on unlocked devices except iPhones and a small selection of Android devices. I have tried a few of the suggestions in various forum posts but none work. It's not a big deal to me because I've always had unlocked devices since I switched to AT&T and I live in an area with for reception so I'm not really missing anything that I rely on.
