Galaxy S5 & Encrypted 64GB SDCard - fail to mount - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello
i have the Gold Galaxy S5 & a 64GB SDCard from Samsung.
The phone and SDCard are encrypted and have worked fine for a long while.
One day I tried accessing the files stored in the SDCard by connecting my S5 via USB 2 to my laptop (Ubuntu 15.10); and It failed to mount since.
I have created an image of the SDCard using 'dd' in Linux.
Therefore, I would rule out a hardware failure.
Furthermore, only once this card was mounted on this phone and I had a glimpse of my pictures, again it failed to copy anything out via USB.
Currently, when I put the SDCard into the phone it shows notifications saying:
... Preparing SD Card
... SD Card safe to remove
As I still have the phone encrypted - and I presume the encryption key are present.
Is there some way that I can copy the encryption key out of the phone? Use those to read the image of the SDCard?
The partition table of this SDCard does not appear to be correct - is it encrypted as well? Is this expected?
It is really annoying to have this happening when I was copying the data out of the phone as a backup ...
It would be really great to have my data back.
Your suggestion on how to solve this problem will be most welcome.

bumping ....
Thx

Since the moment that you damaged the encryption key protecting the card, the data over this card does not belong to you any more.

sorry
how did I 'damage' the encryption key?
I tried reading the SDCard in the same phone.
I have older backups of the phone that included the SDCard - would that help?
Thanks,

Doesn't sound like a problem on ubuntu's side unless it wrote some header or something when it tried to read.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G900A using Tapatalk

The card was mounted in the Phone - Ubuntu accessing it through the USB3
And it just stopped working - just like that!
But, could actually understand that it was something like that.
Would it be possible to reuse an old image (done with dd) of this USB to try and resurrect these files?
for info:
- where are the keys kept?
- surely the phone has some.
Cheers

If I was aware of that? I would require 1000$ payment so to share it.
Message to all:
1) As long Samsung provides software tools only compatible with Microsoft Windows and Android, this translates that other OS platforms them are not supported.
2) Any attempt hacking phone encryption this is illegal.
3) One desperate owner who lost access to SD-card, he should physically visit Samsung service center, demonstrate proof of ownership for phone and card, and ask their help.

Android=Linux in a very basic sense. Even then, it's not 'not supported', furthermore as I said earlier, itse extremely unlikely plugging the phone in would break it regardless of the OS.

When you use any OS this working with command line, this translates that if you are a terrible commander? you army this to be also drowned in the river because of you.
This is what it did happened here too.

really screwed up??

I was using the XDArit utility to write to the SD card and selected Disk0:Memory Card Adapter.. got a message stating it was my boot disk but I ignored it since it listed as the memory card adapter... guess what.. now my PC won't boot, says no operating system found.. I tried booting the win XP disc and doing a repair but it doesn't see anything on C:
anyway to recover my drive? I am sure the stuff is there somewhere right? Sh*t.. I wish I had done this on my home PC and not the office PC.
any help appreciated
Haha!
you overwrote your harddrive!
Since I don't have any idea what the tool you used does, I will (randomly) suggest http://www.partition-recovery.com and their program PR.exe. If the tool does a lazy format or bootsector write (just rewrites the 1st few sectors) PR may work. You can download a test version which won't operate fully but which will say if it finds anything to recover. If the XDA tool actually writes substantial amounts then this won't help.
There are quite a few tools which will scan the disk for anything that looks like data and recover what they can. Of course, if the tool you used actually overwrote the whole disk then you'd have to go a specialist company - and data receovery might still be possible - but this is likely to cost.
Good luck.
PS
I don't think "Haha" was a very kind comment. Not my idea of a "solutions provider" to go to - no matter how expert they might think they are.
Still, it did make me decide to sign up to the forum to post this in case it helps.
I downloaded the demo of PR.EXE and after scanning my drive, it appears that all data is still there... so I have purchased the full version of PR.EXE and it appears promising that I will be able to recover the most important stuff and simply restore my system (needed a restore anyway).
Thanks for the tip!

Encryped files on SD Card then updated ROM, can't view the files now

Hey everyone, I'm an idiot and completely forgot I encrypted the files on my SD Card. I installed a new ROM and now the images I previously had on the memory card are not able to be read by any software and the phone. My guess is, is that the encryption I had prior to flashing the new ROM has encrypted the file to where I can't even view them. Is there anyway to reverse this process? I know it defeats the whole prupose of encryption, but these pictures are important to me since they were pictures of my nephews at my cousin's wedding. I know they wouldn't be the greatest quality images, but I would still love to have them back. Any help on this matter is greatly appreciated

Well, I have a feeling that you are out of luck here. Usually, encryption works with two keys: one at the source and one with the application that did the encryption. These keys are randomly generated. Since you wiped out the original ROM (and the encryption program and (probably) the 2nd key along with it), you are probably screwed. Sorry - wish I had better news. Now, there are special programs and stuff that break cryptography, and I don't know how secure the encryption with WM is, but that is probably not a practical solution. Sorry.
Well, that wasn't what I wanted to hear, but I feel it is the truth and accurate. I appreciate the response and explanation, thanks. Damnit, with my urgency to have the newest ROM, i lost some great pictures of family, oh well.
This is by design. The unique encription key is created during cold boot following a hardreset.
http://blogs.msdn.com/jasonlan/arch...card-wipe-and-encryption-what-s-the-deal.aspx
Ouch!!!!What a bummer
I almost did this with data on a PC which I sold last week. Copied files and tried opening them on my laptop. Luckily I still had the PC to unencrypt my FLICKS...LOL
Oops, that just reminds me I had an encrypted NTFS folder on the PC I upgraded to Vista last week (clean install). Usually never use that thing...
Meh, fortunately it was only an outdated copy of a folder I have on the main PC. But yeah, haven't even checked it, but there won't be any chance there either.
Fortunately I didn't encrypt my SD, as my phone now will just hang upon boot after I installed some program that screws up when loading the Today plugin. Hard reset in the way I guess... is there no safe boot in WM6?

[Galaxy S III][IMPORTANT] GT-I9300 Hard Brick Fix

-
I have not done this before and have not tested this method, do this at your own risk!!!
We've made it to the XDA Portal! (link below)
http://www.xda-developers.com/android/fix-your-soft-bricked-galaxy-s-iii-samsungs-way/
Hi,
A few months ago I hard bricked my Galaxy S II into an unfixable situation the only fix being replacing the motherboard. More info: HERE
While looking for a fix I encountered this thread: HERE
This thread contained a leaked confidential file from Samsung on how to fix a Bricked Galaxy S III. It wasn't relevant to me then because I didn't have a S3, but now as an owner of a S3 I find this may be very useful and may save lots of money if & when needed.
Brief Description of the fix:
Copying the Bootloader file to an external SD Card, using a normal GT-I9300.
Inserting the external SD card into the bricked phone, and copying the bootloader file to the defective PBA.
After downloading the bootloader file to the defective phone, entering download mode with the phone, and downloading a Full S/W.(PIT, PDA, CSC, PHONE files)
Description of the files attached to this post:
(12-38)_GT-I9300_BRICKED.pdf.zip - This ZIP file Contains a PDF file that is the manual for the fix.
GT-I9300_Boot_Recovery.tar - This TAR file is the Bootloader that is copied to the external SD card.
Odin3v3.07.rar - The program specified in the manual that copies the bootloader onto the external SD card.
GT_I9300_unbrick_sdcard_head.zip - The BIN file used in Rebellos's method below.
Requirements:
Odin3 v3.07.exe and Odin3.ini
GT-I9300_Boot_Recovery.tar
(12-38)_GT-I9300_BRICKED.pdf.zip
External SD Card (Memory size should be 2GB or bigger.)
One normal I9300 phone(normally booted on)
*Resistor has to be shorted very carefully, avoiding touching any other parts at all cost. If you short too many things together - possibility of frying some component of your I9300 rises drastically.
No one has yet to report trying this fix and it being successful, but I am confident that if preformed according to the instructions this fix has the potential of fixing almost any bricked GS3.
One Little Problem:
Scenario: I bricked my phone and I want to fix it as mentioned in this thread. So I go ahead and look at the requirements:
I download it from the attachments.
I download it from the attachments.
I download it from the attachments.
I don't have one so I go buy one from a store for a little amount of money.
[*]Ummmm... I have one but it can't boot... Damn! I don't have any friends that own one.... Damn! What should I do?!
Buy a new one so I can use it to fix the old one :silly:
Take my bricked phone to a store and pay at least 60$ for a fix.
Follow the instructions below.
Highly Recommended: (Not Tested Yet, People who do this - please report in the thread)
Because of the 'One Little Problem' there are a few things you can do ahead of time so if you brick your phone you will be prepared:
If you don't own an extra one, buy a 2GB external SD card.
Follow steps 1-12 in the manual using your own phone.
Take the external SD card out of your phone and put it away in a safe place to be used if needed.
Or follow Rebellos's (Elite Recognized Developer) way:
Here's an experimental image: (Or attached to this post)
https://dl.dropbox.com/u/32145655/GT_I9300_unbrick_sdcard_head.zip
1) Insert SD card (Everything from it will be wiped!)
2) Bootup some linux machine (it can be rooted android phone aswell as its also linux machine )
3) Unpack archive
4) Perform dd if=GT_I9300_unbrick_sdcard_head.bin of=/dev/<path to SD card device>
On most of phones its /dev/block/mmcblk1 (MAKE SURE YOU DONT OVERWRITE YOUR INTERNAL PHONE MEMORY, ITS USUALLY "/dev/block/mmcblk0")
On PCs it depends, its sometimes /dev/sdb
More info about dding sd card:
http://mikelev.in/2010/09/cloning-an-sd-card-on-linux/
You're all ready and set, try to boot it up on dead I9300 and tell me how did it go! (Follow step 14 of Samsung's guide)
Also, I don't think Anyway JIG is necessary. Probably you only need to connect it to PC so it gets powered and you can use download mode.

Notice:
This method of fixing your bricked device is only meant to be used if all else fails: Full S/W package with Odin (PIT, BOOTLOADER, PDA, PHONE, CSC) Or USB Jig.

Just been through actions 1-12 with no problems.
However, I can't see anything on internal/external sdcard that looks like a copy of the bootloader.
I'm assuming it's written to a part of the sdcard just like the 'goldcard' on the HTC Desire, which can't be seen without a hex editor.
This would then get picked up when using a jig?
Can anyone confirm this?

You did not need to flash the bootloader to your phone first, its only in the instructions in case the bootloader in the good GS3 does not support SDCARD write protocol.
I can confirm that using an SDCARD image to create the tweezer-tag SDCARD does work.
NOTE: Its also possible to write the entire OS to SDCARD, not just the bootloaders.

Flashing new bootloader is relatively safe (as far as reflashing bootloader can be safe)
It's just same set of bootloaders but with enhanced ODIN protocol - support of writing into T-Flash. As Odia said - recently produced I9300 models might have this feature in bootloader already.
No repartition should be used for these, new bootloader should overwrite old bootloader in working I9300, and during second flash present PIT will be used.

It can be said I added few steps after step 11 and before step 12 of Samsung guide.
Note: System must be rooted.
11.1) Bootup phone and connect it to PC
11.2) Invoke "adb root"
11.3) Invoke "adb shell dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk1 of=/storage/sdcard0/recovery_sd_head.bin bs=1024 count=4096"
11.4) Invoke "adb pull /storage/sdcard0/recovery_sd_head.bin"
You will endup with dump of first 4 megabytes of sd card. Should be enough to contain all necessary data to re-create bootable sd card from it.
Actually boot partition is ~880KB big so I guess dump of ~900KB should be enough. But better to have abit more and be more sure it'll work.

I've disassembled my I9300 yesterday and did some live tests on it.
Unfortunately I was unable to trigger EXT-SD boot, it's pretty hard to short only single resistor without shorting anything else and hanging the board or blowing something up. I'll retry it someday later when I get better tools. Maybe I triggered ext-sd boot but it didn't end up in any special screen because my device was fully alive.
Some tech background I worked out on that solution
Some good news:
If this is possible for SGS3, it's highly plausible that this such method of unbricking can be used for Exynos SGS2 models. This of course needs preparing another magic-SD card.

I wonder if sharing the "Bootloader SD Image" is an option, would be great to have someone brave enough to upload it for the community to avoid messing with the bootloader of a healthy BORROWED i9300.
Thanks for sharing !

Excellent... I've always been worried about bricking my device. I've had my S3 for 2 months and it's the first phone I've rooted, so bricking was always a serious concern for me.
If this is proven to work... thank god!

Moderators please make this sticky!
Report the thread guys,it'll be useful to have this around in case something bad happens!

I guess the anyway jig is the jig that they use to put phones into download mode? I got one for my s2 but I'm not sure if it's the same thing.

This can only be done if you have the Samsung Anyway jig and no one on XDA has their hands on that yet. Or schematics of the board. We need an inside guy to leak that or even give us one.

Yes, maybe only a Samsung Anyway Jig can be used as the phone needs to be booted into "SD Card Mode".
But there is always the possibility that a normal Jig can be used, and the power supply can come from the battery and that shorting "R313 resistance" will force the phone into "SD Card Mode".
We can only know for sure once someone has tried it.
Edit:

Never intended to sound provocative, just trying to brainstorm ideas on how we can make this thing work!
Look here at post #14: http://forum.gsmhosting.com/vbb/f200/gt-i9300-boot-repair-freee-1497416/

COPY BINARY TO EMMC

If we can contact this guy and see exactly what happened maybe we can learn more about how to do this.

Just trying to work my way through GMPOWER's tutorial on rooting the Nook Color.
I have some REALLY basic questions that are probably covered in the instructions, but if it's NEW, which it is for anyone reading here...it's confusing:
For example,
1. What is meant by the bold, red warning........"You must do a complete wipe before installing this package." Does "wipe" mean FORMAT? If yes......format what? The NOOK? The SD card? Both?
2. In the video included in the tutorial, there's reference to an unZIPing program being required to 'uncork' the downloaded files. The narrator says to right click and unzip the files. (When I right click on my zipped files, the only command I see that MIGHT an unzip function is "Extract all". Is that an unzip program?)
3. The most 'complicated' process of all, (to me, anyway) the selecting of the files and unzipping them and "flashing" them (is that just another word for copying or installing?) is passed over so quickly and with the camera so far away from the screen in the video....it's very difficult to see and understand exactly what is happening. For example, at exactly 4:06 into the video, the narrator says to right click on the CWM file.....at which point, it looks like he actually LEFT clicks it and it opens to show TWO files.....and he then RIGHT clicks on one of them, but doesn't say what it's name is or what it should do.
Sorry to sound like a whiney noob......but, remember, only noobs are watching this; otherwise we wouldn't be watching it!
Can someone please elaborate on the click here.....now do this......then do that.......then you will see this......and now you have to do these? I'm sure I speak for more people than just myself when I ask this.
Thanks very much for any help.

I'm running CM10 and have not seen the video you speak of... But I think I can help with some of what you're looking for.
1. Wipe and format are often used synonymously. For example wiping your system or data partition on your device is the same as formatting. If the video is talking about the SD card, the same philosophy applies. A formatted card is ideal before starting.
2. Again, unzip and extract are somewhat synonymous. What program they are likely referring to is 7zip. It's a powerful compression and decompression utility.
3. Flashing describes the process of installing a package(ROM, zip, etc...) from one media(SD in this case) and installing it to a normally read only media (the Nook's internal drive. Including the system and data partitions of the disk) This is usually done through a recovery program that starts up instead of the normal OS. In most cases it is Clockwork Mod recovery (CWM) or something very much like it.
Like I said, I haven't seem the video and never went the manual nooter route. I totally wiped stock nook and went the CyanogenMod route. So I can't comment on the video's vagueness in this case. Maybe another member has some insight on this.

Hey, propjockey.....thanks for the 'patient' explanations.
I've made a little headway in terms of preparing to root my Nook Color.....but when I tried to use DiskImager....I got an error:....."An error occurred when attempting to lock the volume.

Anybody know what might have generated this? Or, what I should try next?
Thanks for any help, ladies and gentlemen!

Dumb question: I don't think either the text from GMPOWER or the video ever state WHERE the win32 diskimager and/or the clockwork-3.2.0.1 should be residing when these operations are taking place. I would ASSUME they're all supposed to be on the SD card....but I've been wrong before when assuming!!
Also, when I first tried this, I noticed I had downloaded (and possibly extracted) the win32diskimager-source.zip (SOURCE) version as opposed to the BINARY version. Should I start over? With a cleanly formatted SD? (my formatting took a long, long time when I initially did it.......not using the Quick method, as I think I saw advised somewhere.)
Thoughts? Thanks!
EDIT: Actually, I think I just answered PART of my question: when I tried it again (after formatting the SD and putting ALL three zipped files on the card) I got a new/different error:
"Image file cannot be located on the requested device." So, I guess that means that at least the "eyeballer" image file CANNOT be sitting on the SD card while you attempt to "write" it there. Yes? No?
Therefore....by the same token....is it safe/possible to run the Win32DiskImager from the SD card.....or should it ALSO be located somewhere else during this process??
ANOTHER EDIT: Tried removing the image file from the SD card, then running DiskImage and selecting the image file that I'd downloaded and unzipped to my hard drive. STILL got the "lock error". Getting frustrated. Most grateful for any suggestions/help. Please and Thanks
You definitely need the img file on your PC before you try to burn. Having it on SD and putting that location in the image box will definitely lock the card. Try again with nothing on the card and no other program running.

Thanks, buddy!
That was apparently my problem
I formatted the card back to being a virgin.....put NOTHING on it. Went to Win32 on my hard drive, launched it, found the eyeballer image on my HARD DRIVE and selected it to flash onto my card in the G-drive.
And away it went!!! Lovely! Just friggin lovely!!
Now, since instructions everywhere often seem to be devoid of these fine "details".......could you be so kind as to give me EXPLICIT directions on what to do next? (I'd hate to turn my Nook Color into a paperweight at this stage!)
The sequence of events (i.e. when the nook gets turned on/turned off/hooked up/ etc seem to be different in different places........I notice even the video from Acsyndicate TV, they insert a little apology in the corner saying they forgot to turn it on; DOH!! Also, I see elsewhere that the Nook should be connected by USB at some point during this process....and yet the guy in the video doesn't have a cable showing anywhere any time. WTF??)
Thanks tons for your help leapinlar.......I'm almost at the point of not buggin you any more!

Installation/rooting successfully completed, but now unable to download any apps because of "Sorry there's not enough space......." error appearing for every attempted download.
Is there a secret.......let me rephrase that.......what IS the secret to deleting all the crap that must be in there taking up all the space?
I rooted a virtually STOCK Nook Color (1.4.3) using manualnooter-5.08.20.basic.block_updates.zip - and it appeared to be fine, but I'm assuming there's a routine that must be followed to either "turn on" the ability to download......or free up some space to download......new apps.....which, after all, is the only reason we root these things.......right?
Thanks for any/all info.

You apparently have a lot of B&N stuff (apps, games, etc) installed (1.7 GB worth), but 3.35 GB should be plenty for installing more apps through Play Store. I don't know what your issue is.
Edit: You do not say, but I am assuming you meant downloading apps with Play Store. If you meant downloading some other way, like a browser, you need an sdcard to do that and you have not said how much room your SD card has.

OK....good feedback....THANKS!
1. Yes, I mean to download using Play Store (which currently is labeled MARKET. Presumably it'll update itself and change its name to GOOGLE PLAY when we get the storage problem solved.......will it?
2. I have next to no previous apps or media (maybe 4 apps and 4 books and 3 magazines) downloaded to the NC......but, perhaps it doesn't take much to fill this puppy?
3. I don't even have an SD card in it at this point. I removed the one I used to do the rooting because it booted to it when I started up the Nook this AM........and I assumed that was a bad thing.....or, at least unnecessary.
Should I erase the "rooting SD card"........or "keep it in a safe place" and use a new one for downloading/storing apps and media?
Thanks,
Mike

1. It should have changed itself immediately. That may be indicative of the problem.
2. Are any of the books kids interactive books? They take a lot of space.
3. If you did not make a backup with the CWM card, and you don't plan to restore the backup in the future, then reformat the card to use as a normal SD. But I recommend you do the backup and keep the card as CWM. Then get a new one.

1. Hmmmm. Hope THAT'S not a disaster. "Market" opens Ok and I can see hundreds (maybe thousands) of apps. But, I've used the search utility and searched for "Google Play".........."Google"..........and even "Market"........and no Google Play comes up in the search results. Shouldn't it?
2. No kids in the familly; no 'interactive' stuff of any kind that I know of....a couple of novels, couple of magazines.....sodoku, Evernote, YouTube, calculator, a little drum machine, flashlight.......mirror......holy crap, looks like wifey's been active after all!!
3. I DIDN'T make a backup with (of ?) the CWM card. Back up of what, exactly......the old disk image (operating system? Pardon my noobiness). Is it too late to make any required copies/backup? I just now copied the contents of the "rooting SD card" into a folder on my laptop's hard drive.......but I'm not sure if that's what you're talking about.

1. That may be the problem. It should update itself, but is not critical. The older versions of market temporarily stored their downloads on a separate partition named cache. That may be full from earlier downloads. Boot to CWM and there is an option to wipe cache. Do that. Then try to use market again.
3. The CWM card is capable of making what is called a nandroid backup. It backs up your entire operating system to SD so that if in making future mods, you make a mistake, you can restore your operating system to the way it was before you started making mods. It is too late to do that for you, but you can still backup what you have now.

Files get deleted when cut/pasting

So when I connect my phone to my PC and enable file transfer, I try and copy or cut and paste files and it doesn't work. Yesterday I created a new folder where my pictures are stored by default. I then copied and pasted the pics from the main folder to the new one and it went through the motions but didn't display any. I refreshed and still nothing. I backed out of the directory and the folder said it was empty but so was my main pic folder. So it basically deleted everything instead of pasting them in the new folder. Is there an easy fix to this? Never had this issue with my note 3 and 4. Or any other phone for that matter. Is there like a Read/Write command to turn on or something? Seams like a pretty big flaw to not be able to cut paste files and they just get deleted....
Any help on the subject would be greatly appreciated,
Never had any issues like this, both on encrypted and decrypted data. Try flashing the userdata again and see if the issue still persist.
Also, have you checked for the pics in Recycle Bin?

If it helps, I am not rooted and completely stock. How would I go about finding the recycling bin?
I have the same issue with my OP5 (decrypted)
Have you tried copy pasting?
Mine worked well when I did it (encrypted).
Just drag and drop, don't copy so much, try one folder at a time instead.
Also I'd never use cut and paste, if it fails you could end up in limbo with files missing.
Always copy.

You were moving pics from your PC to the phone, were you not?
Windows moves the files to Recycle Bin when you cut-paste.

No, just moving files from one folder to another within the phone. Just using the PC to play middle man to issue the command.

I am not concerned about the files as I have a backup. What concerns me is that the OP5 does this to begin with. I have had several iphones and several Samsung phones and never encountered this issue. That is a design flaw within the software. I was hoping to get an answer as to if this can be fixed or if it is just a flaw with OP5's operating system. Just seems odd this phone does that.

It doesn't happen to everyone. So we can't really talk about a design flaw in the software, otherwise it would affect every device. It's more like a random bug I guess.
As I said, when I got this device I successfully copied my files. Granted, it did seem to have missed a few files (2 Titanium Backup backuped files) and possibly more I did not notice so far.
I've noticed dodgy OTG on the O+5 never had it in a phone before
Because the copying is done by the operating system of your PC, shouldn't there be the problem? The phone is just connected by the internal storage as an external drive. Or is this a driver thing?

Well to me, bugs are inherently design flaws. lol But I don't want to argue semantics. I would just like to find a fix to this "design flaw"/bug. I can understand having a few files deleted or not transferred. But every single file that was selected, cut and pasted? That is just frustrating beyond belief. I just don't get why it does that to begin with. Never encountered this issue with any other phone I have done this same procedure with. I have no issues with transferring files from the pc to the phone. The problem is encountered when I am trying to do things with the internal storage. That is what is confusing me.
@strider5236, tried doing it again on decrypted data using Windows 10 and and Ubuntu 14.04. Moved with no issues. Encrypted data then did it again. No issues still.
Have you tried flashing the userdata image like I initially suggested?

Can that be done on a stock, non rooted phone? If so, how do I go about that? Would odin be needed?

That would be great thank you.
There seems to be a bug in the Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) between Android and Windows 10. It loses files while copying.
