Custom binary message sd820 - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Has anyone with a sd820 gotten the custom binary message? My phone rebooted out of nowhere and flashed that message, I can use the phone normally but now my device status is custom, any insight? Samsung accused me of rooting the phone which I wish there was one lol

maybe you did unlock the bootloader... how cool would that be

Lol it would be awesome, Samsung told me to go to bestbuy to have them do a software recovery, first bestbuy rejected me accusing me of rooting the phone ehi any competent person would know there is no root for the sd820, so I'm going to try another location today, in still within my return period so if they don't fix it I will have to return, maybe I should install superuser and see what happens lol

Just an update for people that have e the same issue, Samsung at best buy confirmed I didn't have root access or I would of left, they said it was a known issue with att varients and that I had to do a exchange, thank God I was within my 14day window exchanged no problems I didn't actually tell att my device status was custom for fear they would reject the exchange.

What's the point of no return?

I know that at this time there is no way to remove clockworkmod recovery so I'm wondering what else can be done without installing cwm.
Just how far can we go with the nexus s before reaching a point of changes and tweaks being irreversible (in the event of having to return it to the shop)?
Can we still root and be able to return to out of the box state if necessary (removing all traces)?
Is there any point in the above without cwm installed?

Actually, as some of us learned the hard way, the new 2.3.1 update forces you back to stock recovery on every fresh boot of the device. Nice safety feature if you think about it.
I think if you factory reset the phone and relock (fastboot oem lock) the bootloader, no one's going to not accept it as a return. Do you really think Best Buy return desk goes that deep into the phone. Several posts around here of people returning and stating Best Buy didn't even turn on the phone or open the battery door to see if a battery was in it still! YMMV but I personally am not worried about being able to return to BB as long as I don't water drop or otherwise physically damage the phone.
Interesting. For those of us who haven't been pushed the 2.3.1 update yet though it looks like flashing the clockworkmod could be a bad move... for now at least.

Only if you're concerned about Best Buy not taking the phone back if it's on there. Better safe than sorry, I guess.
I haven't tried in stock recovery, but supposedly you can flash unsigned zips with it, so if that's true, there's one thing you don't need CWM for, but you're still giving up Nandroid and other advanced features.
I wouldn't do too much mucking around with system files without a nandroid to fall back on. One guy in another thread seems to have really mucked up his phone just by playing with fonts.
If all you want is root and can get it to stick without CWM (I couldn't, I had to use CWM advanced feature to mount /system and chmod the su binary), then probably fine without CWM until you're sure about keeping the phone. There are reports of rooting without CWM if you search here and the developer's section.
Thanks, I'm not a best buy customer but your points are relevant nonetheless. I think I will leave as is until I make my final decision
You only have to worry if the returns desk/mobile people call up a Geek Squad person for verification. Those Geek Squad people, they know their stuff man.

CarphoneWarehouse accepted my return of a previous phone (which was also unlocked + rooted) and they still accepted it and exchanged the phone. I'm guessing you just have to be lucky.

Paranoid about the warranty!

Hello!
Just got my Epic 4G a few days ago and I'm already itching to root it, but I'm paranoid about the warranty. Sprint rep told me that they were anal about it and it would void it.
I used to have a Nexus One with T-Mobile and I was flashing new ROMs and kernels almost every day. I've always been a 'nerd' so I know what it all means and how to do it... but there's that lingering warranty in my mind. I was worried about it at first on my Nexus One, but eventually rooted and unlocked the bootloader even though I knew it meant the warranty went byebye.
Can someone offer me some piece of mind? Are these things easy to un-root? Is there any way that a Sprint tech could find out if it was ever rooted should I ever need to take advantage of the warranty?
I'll be honest with you, I'm not sure if it's worth it. I am not going to flash custom ROMs (yes, I miss FroYo, but I'm content)... the only reason I'm interested in rooting is for things like AdFree, Juice Defender, and removing stock apps.
Thoughts?
99% of Sprint reps not only could never tell your phones been rooted without seeing a different boot screen, but don't even know what root is.

Nothing to worry about... If you have to take your phone back to the store just Odin back to stock and problem solve. Everything is on the Wiki.

exactly! I took my epic in back in November to complain about battery management issue I was having and to swap out for a new one. I told the rep what a bummer it was that I had to re-install all my apps and he said
"naw man, you can just save everything on your sd card no problem. that's what its there for!"
to which I replied, "only on froyo, and only if you install the leaked dk28 build"
rep:
Yeah they don't even know.if a phone is rooted or not. Besides just like people aid previously just use Odin and it.flashes it.back to stock. Its a lifesaver sometimes.

Some older phones used to have flash counters, and I don't know if the epic has one. Typically they are buried deep in inaccessible areas and I doubt that any sprint store would have the wherewithal to get at it. I'm sure that Samsung could probably tell, but when Sprint sends them back they just throw them in a big box. The point of accountability is at the store where you exchange for another one. So either odin back to stock or short out the hardware and sprint will be none the wiser.

Yeah, there is actually a code that you can bring up to see if the phone is a refurb'd or not. I did that on mine and it was definately new.
Thanks for all the replies.
Rooted today using this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=808103
No problems.

I did too and with the code check it shows new but hey do you believe that I don't cuz if we can make the phone looks unrooted with Odin they can make their own phone to appear as brand new.

[Q] If i unlock then relock, can Moto tell that i unlocked?

I know this has been asked before but i just want to be sure, i just got the xoom and i want to know if i can send it in for repairs. I just want to kno if its like the ipod's/phones where there is a physical feature that is broken, so i can relock and my warranty will be valid.
Moto doesn't care.
K thanks

Wait, what makes you say that? Do you know something we don't know? As far as I've heard, they've been very specific to say that they will not support devices that have been hacked.

... yet they sold us a Google-Experience device with an unlocked bootloader.
You can't break anything seriously with software, which means any potential problems we'd have are either physical, user-abuse, or hardware defects. If you send it in and they determine that the problem is SW, they'll probably just wipe it back to stock and send it to you.
Fact does remain, however, that when you unlock that device you have to acknowledge you are voiding your warranty if you proceed. I'd like to think they would be reasonable - but at the same time, you have agreed to kiss off your warranty when you unlock.
That is why I am hesitant to unlock, on all of my Android Phones I have rooted because I know there is no hardware function that can tell it has been "Hacked" like on the iPhone. The Xoom I am unsure about because nobody has a definitive answer yet. My Eris broke 3 times while rooted and I unrooted each time and sent it in for a exchange. I just want the above situation to be equivilent to when/if (Hopefully not) my xoom has a hardware failure.

Moto has released their newest UPDATE for the xoom, on their website they included instructions and software to "RE-LOCK"/"UNROOT" your device before doing update. they dont care as long as you "relock"before sending the device to them to fix or reflash stock after you BUNKED a mod or etc...i dont recommend doing a theme flash, i did a few of them and had to go back to stock after every theme i tried, they did nothing but force close and i almost wasnt able to get back into CWM because the device wasnt recognized in adb...unlocking and rooting does nothing bad to your XOOM, best thing going for it, at least til there are some ROMS that couldnt get here any sooner...just a heads up

Thanks everyone! I think im going to unlock it when I get the chance, the SD card slot is a BIG thing that I could use, also I want it overclocked just a lil (1.25 Ghz per core) so it doesn't lag much on the home screen. Also im not going to be flashing roms and stuff mainly kernels. This device is going to be used as a family computer so i can't mess with it as much as I can with my Phone . Anyways thanks guys!

For those returning rooted phones...

I have given Sprint my phone to repair a blown speaker, and also gave Best Buy my phone for a couple days.
Both times phone was rooted, to Sprint it had a stock looking rom with superusers though etc, they didn't say anything.
Gave phone to Best Buy, with a Sense 3.0 rom on it, she even mentioned "This looks like my Evo3d" and i told her I was rooted and was running a sense3.0 rom etc etc and she was all "cool."
however i got my phone back from both places and they were refurbs and i obviously lost my roots.
Most recently I got my refurb phone with the 2.3 OTA so no root anymores.
I guess it depends on who you return it to, but on both of my occasions, both for the same reason, even at about the same time span...they didn't say anything negative or 'sorry we can't help you' etc.
Just bored on xda..no root is driving me nuts.

Rooted phone are covered under warranty and 100% OK by Sprint.
So, I wasted my time getting it back to stock to take it in for a blown speaker.
Awesome.

My friends phone was rooted and sprint forced an upgrage. He has the Sprint Evo 4G. It was rooted with Evervolv v1.1.0b3 (2.3.4). the HTC white screen kept repeating itself. I used my SD card to try to get the upgrade to complete but when it got to the system upgrade the second part progress bar was in red. It would never upgrade. Has anyone else experienced this problem. I saw your OTA upgrage prevents you rooting and I found it on my EVO. I liked rooting but is it now impossible to do. Any information that will help would be highly appreciated.

They swapped your phone for a blown speaker? They obviously didn't know what they were doing if that's all that was wrong with it. I'd suggest finding another service center.

I was going to try this, but I got worried that I would brick my new phone when I saw the firmware is different. Chainfire's method uses XXUAMD2 firmware. My Build Number is JDQ39.I337UCUAMDB. It is close, but not the same.

they want someone stupid to try it out instead of them and report their success or failure first lol
im sure most people dont even have this phone yet because its not out. Mine does not arrive till tommorow
I thoiught I saw a post in the Development thread that this method does not work - I may be wrong, but I am pretty sure that is the case, unfortunately. I have faith that Chainfire of someone will get us rooted soon enough - (hell, I don't even have my S4 yet - won't arrive until tomorrow
But - Unless I had seen someone else had successfully rooted using any method, I do not think I would even think about being the first one to try it. lol
How long before the AT&T source code is released? We should be able to get a work around once we have that.
This will be my first Android phone that didn't have root before it was released, and I've bought nearly all of them on release date, taken it home, and rooted it before doing anything! I won't be selling my SIII right away since it looks like I'll be using it until we get a successful root out of this sucker....
Getting mine on Saturday if all goes to plans, willing to help test as well! I have 60 days to return it if it breaks, hahah

Yea i can't officially switch till root. S4 just arrived. Will see if I can get some root on here.
Just got mine an hour ago. Apparently, thanks to AT&T, the bootloader is locked, which could complicate the root method considerably
