I just got this phone yesterday. I switched from the iPhone 6. I'm really loving this phone so far and missed Andriod. My only gripe is the camera. I feel like quality was a lot better on my iPhone. Not sure if I need to adjust my camera settings, if it's my eyes or a defective camera. I noticed in some pics thereshould a lot of noise on the edges and front camera make my face look blurry. I have the Sony sensor which I heard was good.

There's no film on the lens but the NR (noise reduction) algorithms seem more aggressive in the s7 than in previous samsung phones. This makes pictures look muddy and loses detail in low light shots. Most mobile phones will produce similar images because of the physics of the small sensor. It's nothing to worry about, try it out in the daytime and you will be pleasantly surprised!

Which modes did you use? Kept everything auto? I tried to reproduce your environment to shoot, very shi#$ lights.. but as you can see, they're quiet good... I had to turn off the flash.
And related to the blurry selfies:
I have the same issue but I know why. In my case it's the tempered glass on the screen. The angle of the front facing camera is really wide so the glass gets pictured (on the bottom) witch results in a partial blurry selfie. I'll save you from seeing my face. Look at my wall instead [emoji6]

I use the auto mode as well. I never used flash in my pics. Your first pic looks similar to mine but more in focus. Maybe my cam didn't focus all the way. My back camera is fine. I took some test shot outside and I think it was just the lighting. The front cam got better too. Not as blurry but I notice when the the front camera recognizes a face it puts some type of filter on. Guess I can clear the cache again and see if that works
Notice the face? (Excuse my face ?)

Every shot takes a bit of preparation. Try not to get too close. Maybe the auto settings fail in different conditions. My controller picture was a quick shot. You could point your finger at the screen where you want it to be focused.
Related to your face.. Yeah, pretty....pretty[emoji16] .
Did you check the beauty face filter? Make sure it's turned off
Btw this is so blurry because I tried to take a screenshot by making that gesture with my whole hand... I miss the hardware button screenshot from nexus?

How did you get the 4g LTE icon to go away when on WiFi?
Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk 4
I had a Galaxy nexus LTE before this so I learned a few battery saving techniques, I used NFC task launcher to shut off my mobile data when I connect to my home wifi and to turn it back on when I disconnect from it. it also sets my screen brightness and some other useful settings. When root is obtained you can also use Grrenify to shut down apps that are not in use to increase performance and battery life. On my Gnex I was getting over 24 hours of use with those 2 cheats and it was wonderful.

Hopefully #2 (the brighter one) is from the Maxx. If not, then I'll deem this camera an even stronger fail than it already is! Awesome device, I just can't believe Moto dropped the ball on the camera yet again, after years of complaints vs other OEMs.

It's not, at all... if you're standing still in bright sunlight and have time to make sure it focuses, and the subject isn't moving, it can do pretty good. Anything else and it's well below par. And you might be able to access it quickly and easily and snap a shot easily, but the shutter is often slow it's just the same old same old Motorola camera.
The slow-mo video is pretty cool, but I have yet to find any practical use for that, or any use at all honestly. But it works well...

The problem is so comically bad and the hardware for the camera is a known good quantity, I have to agree on this being a software problem.

I'm not sure if I fully agree - not trying to be snarky or anything. The table shots look nice but pretty dark, until that last one, which is odd? But maybe that's how they're supposed to look (dark, that is).
The first chair shot has a similar slightly washed out "hazy" look to it, same as the normal camera shots - at least from my perspective.

I hope you're right, but I fear it's a combination - when shooting videos, both regular and slow motion, if it's well-lit and someone has on a white shirt, that white shirt has a haze or glow around it, which makes me think (thanks to some input from those that know more than me) it's also an issue with the optics they're using.

You're right - they're not bad. I have some decent shots outdoors as well. But when you compare them to other current phones, a couple those will look cold and a bit 'hazy'.
The thing is, despite it's shortcomings, the simplicity and usability of the camera is kinda growing on me... I really like the gestures and simplicity of the UI.

Suggest people use flickr so we can see the settings used. tapatalk is useless at understanding how the camera works.
if you cannot do that then mention iso, shutter speed & scn mode (if any). This will get you looking at these parameters and help to understand why shots don't turn out as expected or how to get better ones.

Is anyone else finding the shutter lag really bad on this phone? After I press the capture button it seems like it freezes the frame and takes a photo, but then clearly continues the exposure for another half second or so before finalizing, meaning if you move the camera it goes into blursville.
In general it seems pretty bad at capturing anything in motion (and I mean mild motion, not requiring sports mode).
I'm really stunned as to how Sony can have allowed such a flawed camera onto a flagship device. In ideal conditions like sunlight etc it takes AMAZING photos, pretty much digicam quality... but you almost need a tripod to get a clear shot in lower light conditions. It's a bit of a bummer for a device which is in every other respect awesome.

Dear all,
Would you mind checking the manufacturing date of your Z1C and share?
I wrote in a different thread:
I bought the device and I was very disappointed with the camera. I tried different modes and settings and in all of them the same photos I took with the galaxy S2 were significantly better (more focused, less noise, more vivid colors, more details in crops..) ! (regular scenes/light conditions).
In addition I have the flash leakage problem..
Also the camera looses focus during video capture..
...
I think maybe the first manufacturing line has these problems which are also reported online, could you kindly check the manufacturing date of your device?
Mine is Oct, 2013 (black version)
Thanks !!

I'm also a bit disappointed by the camera to be honest. My previous phone was the galaxy S2. In my opinion the camera performs pretty bad under low lightning (manual mode, no settings touched) and also not really special under normal conditions. Maybe I just suck at photographing.
I don't have any flash leakage problem though.

I had this problem with my ATT model
the hot spot in the center usually happens with cmos cameras looking at flat gray colors (like a gray floor)
It might be a bad sensor like we had on the m7. The sensors temps would skyrocket and cause colored noise or something to that expent. Have the phone cool down by turning it off for awhile and when u turn it on launch the camera and see if the pink tint is there. If it appears a few moments after it might be the same issue.

Samsung has already acknowledged this issue as a hardware issue in some initial phones and said that the issue is fixed in newer phones. Get your phone replaced. It is not OK to dismiss this as something that is universal. This is specific issue affecting some users.

No, They are not doing this just for camera failed error phones. They replaced S5 (exynos version) which had exactly this issue. Pink smudg / hue over entire picture. Even in some moderately lit areas without any grey objects.
In the dark, yes, it does get noisy and blue/purplish on all S5s. But this should not happen in daylight. But it is on some units. I talked to the service supervisor when initially the desk clerk refused to acknowledge the issue. But they indeed had memo from Samsung to either replace the camera units or the phones (those who claimed DOA) if customers complained about this issue.
This is not usual chromatic aberration issue. This is different. It is not happening only on the edges. It is like there is some filter in front of your entire lens. I wish I had saved those images to show what the issue is. I ended up returning the phone in the end. Getting new one in couple of weeks.
Did anyone else notice the camera stretching your face ? Try taking a selfie and put your face on the bottom or top. Notice the crazy stretch? I usually take my selfie pictures with top of my head cut off. But this camera is morphing my head into an alien head. Is there anyway to fix this? My Iphone never did anything like this..
I found some examples on another forum. This was not taken on note 4 but its the same issue.

I belive every camera will introduce lens distortion when trying to take picture in extreme angle (especially with wide-angle lens). I think it is completely normal.

I think you guys are just now realizing that foreheads are freakishly large

I have the same issue. Do you have a tempered glass screen protector on, that covers the front camera? If so, that's your problem, replace it with one with a cutout. I've ordered a new one, hopefully it'll arrive soon, the world needs my selfies!

Are you calling my mother a liar?!

That's not really normal - that just shows that Samsung forgot compensating the wider view angles of the camera via adapting the software properly.

There is no software what will compensate user laziness. Turn wrist a little and picture will be perfect. Can't blame samsung for everything.

Not for everything, but for not compensating picture distortions - you bet !

Some (most) distortions can not be automatically compensated. There are to many variables to use software for automatic fix. There are simple solutions. Keep your face in the middle of screen and take correct picture or use photoshop or other specialized software to correct distortion before you post it on Facebook or Instagram or get face transplant to one which look good even distorted and stop complaining and enjoy your BEAUTIFUL Note 4

What the actual ****, Sony?
I always noticed something was sheit about this camera and I kind of knew it was about the image processing but never realised just how had it is.

How could you possibly ruin a picture so much? Not to mention the raw image from the 21mp shot has a much better quality than a frame from a video!
Does anyone know of a way to disable this?
Sony has messed up the camera with lag to launch it and to do a capture... I dont understand really what is the issue to improve that. I have readed that RAM is important.

RAM might be related to the launch issue but where is the problem in just disabling the anti-noise algorithm altogether?

Yeah, where is it. Algorithm is all broken around... Really it isn't understable. Sometimes I think if Sony has something under contract with the others companies and it messes up the software post process.... It's the unique lame in Sony right now if you see the Galaxy S7, LG G5, Huawei P9... Curious thing that Sony is the coolest thing in the sensor industry. Casualty or...

It's nothing short of ridiculous that this phone does not fully support Camera 2 API yet. Sony has been marketing this phone all around the camera but they don't deliver anything.
I'll put up a post on the Sony forums and see how it turns out.
So if we want a good quality picture, record in 4k and take a screenshot? Lol

The best camera in the world, isnt? lol
I've noticed when you double tap to zoom in it zooms in A LOT. Meaning you see more noise/blurriness. In other phones when you double tap to zoom it doesn't zoom in as much so it looks sharper. But the camera is actually pretty good, SA sometimes gets it completely wrong in low light situation and the shutter lag is ridiculous. Takes too long to take a picture.

That is literally what I did when I took a bike trip yesterday. Recorded about 1:40 minutes which resulted in almost a gigabyte of video and I extracted exactly 47 still images out of that.
You need a lot of storage but it's a possible workaround. Sad this camera ruins an otherwise great phone.
the camera supports manual controls with fv-5 camera app . Just no raw suport

Nothing comes close as stock app with manual controls, like samsung or lg camera apps.
I tried that camera fv 5 or how it was called actualy, and i was not impressed at all.
I really like this phone, but I am dissapointed with the camera.
Also camera interface sucks, it is okay for auto mode but for manual mode you have to go in settings just to change iso or hdr? Really Sony?

They seemed to have improved it significantly in the Xperia X, which is ridiculous as its specs aren't more powerful than the Z5. They are also advertising 0.6 shutter response from standby and "almost instantaneous" shutter response from normal use of the app. Yet if you look at a few of the MWC demos, you can see the shutter response is faster but it still captures very slightly after... On the show floor there were two demos emphasizing the autofocus and shutter from standby, but few people filming there actually showed the shutter response conclusively.
Third party apps have the potential to have less shutter lag but I found the on-screen camera button and physical button to be often unresponsive, probably because the autofocus is badly optimized.
