Battery drain - Play Store. Tried several things - any thoughts? - Galaxy S6 Edge+ Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have an AT&T S6 Edge+, unaltered, running 5.1.1 (morespecifically, it's the G928A running LMY47X). First, a shot of the damage:
i.imgur. com/4jBk6w5.png <-I haven't made enough posts to make outside links, despite being a member for almost a decade...
So I've tried a reset (power button, reset). I've tried a hard reset (hold volume down and power button until it resets).
I tried wiping the cache, I tried a force stop of play, I tried disabling and re-enabling play store. I uninstalled Play Store updates then reinstalled them (that was a PITA).
This started yesterday AM. I have had no major software updates. I have nothing running in the background.
For the life of me --- what else can I do, or what can be causing this? I dropped 15% battery in 15 minutes this morning before dropping it back on the charger. The Edge+ isn't known for stellar battery, I can't survive many days with this issue....

Fix Google Play Services battery drain
Some users have reported that Google Play Services drains their Galaxy S6 battery quite a lot. Lucky for us, there is a very strange but effective fix for this problem.
Go to Settings > Data Usage
Scroll down to see the list of apps
Press on Google Play Store
Switch Toggle to Restrict background data
Repeat step 3 and 4 for Google Play Services
Hard-restart your Galaxy S (not to be confused with hard-reset) by holding the volume-down and power buttons and release once the device turns itself off
Re-enable background data for Google Play Store and Google Play Services

CacheUpdateService - Draining Battery

Hi,
The last couple days my battery had been draining quickly. After having it unplugged for 2 hours this morning, and only listening to music for about 30 min, noticed i was at 95% so looked at my wakelocks. The #1 wake lock is "CacheUpdateService" under google services. It has not allowed my phone to go into deep sleep once. See screen shot. Any help would be appreciated. Just 2 days ago battery was amazing.

Me too, I just found your post in a search for the same issue. I'm going to try a few things and I will post if I fix it...

Really hope you find a solution to this.
I just tried reflashing CleanRom 1.1, but it did not solve the problem. Granted it was a dirty flash. I'll try a clean flash when i get a chance.

Only thing I found was to toggle the "sync" off then on for the google accounts in the notification pull down on samsung phones. I did that and also cleared cache and dalvik. Problem went away. Give it a shot. I have seen in the past when something like gmail or calendar would hang on sync and a setting it to not sync then back on would fix it. If that doesn't work, I've also actually removed my google account and added it back (fixed another issue in the past). Good luck

Thanks for the info. I ended up doing a factory reset then reflashing cleanrom. Seems to have solved it. If it coms up again I'll give your tips a try.
I have awesome battery life. I disabled Google now and never looked back. Also disabled wifi location services. My second charge I got 43 hours off charger and 5 hours of on screen time and had 9% left. Check the battery review thread that's somewhere on these G2 forums for tips.
Had this issue on my G2. After much frustration, i ended up uninstalling google play services with titanium backup, then reinstalling them. To reinstall them, I uninstalled a google play app (google play music in my case) and reinstalled it. The play store then had me install google play services from there.
Sleeping like a baby since.
I have the same problem. Tried everything from factory reset to uninstalling Google Play Services, but no luck. Did anyone have any other solutions? My phone doesn't go to deep sleep ever.
I have been so impressed with the battery power during usage so I tried 2 nights in a row to let it sit and see how the battery was over night. Each morning shocked to see 15% gone in 8 hours. Granted I have seen worse in the past with GS3 but still I am listed as it was awake the whole time. And the listing under Gsam is cacheupdateservice. every google app is unchecked in account and my gmail account is set to sync off. My regular email account is set to sync but only on manual. I do have access my location on with wifi and mobile location checked. I'll try unchecked. Any other help is always appreciated. Thanks
I had/have the same issue. The phone will NEVER sleep. I went into task manager and force stopped and cleared cache on almost all apps. Went to manage apps and cleared all data and cache in google play services yesterday after noon. Perfect for a couple hours. No cacheupdate service listed in gsam. checked back a little later and there it was again. Not sure at all what I did to trigger again. I then did the same thing and let it sit over night. Lost only 4 percent in 7 hours. So far have changed wifi and mobile locations on the way to work to work, checked email and surfed the net. So far so good.
Has anybody made any head way on the cause of this. If I clear the cache and data for Google services and force stop I am good for as much as a day sometimes with none of these wakelocks. Then they are back. I have tried a bunch of stuff with no true fix yet. I uninstalled the updates and no wakelocks but I keep getting messages telling we it needs to be updated. Any in sight would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
I don't have a G2, but I have the exact same issue on my Moto X...I tried searching a lot for this issue and no one seems to have a good solution (wipe cache, dalvik etc has not helped me).
Ultimately what I have done is install this app (phone needs to be rooted), then select System Apps ->Google Play Services and disabled CacheUpdateService. I haven't seen any side effects of this yet, but I am not sure if there will be any....Can someone else who is rooted give it a shot too and see if things improve?
App is called Disable Service

Problem with Google Services, battery drain, factory reset and computer connectivity

Hello,
First of all I'm not a native english speaker so I apologize if any of the terminology is off.
Some errors started appearing spontaneously on LG G2. They were not preceded by any updates or software installations. The android version installed is 4.4.2.
The battery started to drain very fast. The phone would not last in standby mode during the night despite being fully charged, for instance. Upon closer inspection, Google Services accounted for about 35% of battery usage for no apparent reason.
No service associated with Google Play can be used. If Google Play is opened, only a white screen is seen and it tries to load without getting anywhere. Same thing with Gmail, it just keeps loading and says that it cannot connect to the servers. Clearing the cache or rebooting the phone did not help.
My first intention was to perform a backup and then a factory reset. However, the phone is not recognized by the computer, even if LG G2 drivers are installed separately. I've tried connecting it to two different PC's and one Mac. I also tried installing LG PC Suite on one of the PC's, but the Suite does not recognize or find the phone over USB or WiFi. The cable used has been used for data transmission before. Bluetooth does not work either. The phone may be recognized but the security code that is supposed to be displayed on the screen is not displayed.
So the last resort was to simply perform a factory reset. Well, selecting factory reset through the menus (while running the phone) yields nothing. Nothing happens at all when it is selected. The hard reset, performed by holding down the power button and the volume down button, and then releasing and pressing the power button while still holding down the volume down button yields nothing as well. It does not go into the factory reset menu, it just keeps rebooting.
Booting the phone works and surfing works (at the moment), but everything related to Google Services and also SMS texting does not work.
I've run out of things to try. Any ideas what could be wrong and what to do about it?

Anyone have issues where apps take FOREVER to start downloading on nougat?

This wasn't a problem until I updated the phone a while after I got it. When I go to the play store and download a new app, it shows "downloading" with the weird fragmented bar moving across the progress bar, but the download refuses to start for like 5 minutes to sometimes several hours or a day. I've turned off every power and data saving mode I could find and it still does this. Factory reset, force stop, clear cache, clear data on all google play related apps (yes, including the system apps), and it WON'T STOP DOING IT.
Haven't had this issue on my Z3Z but I have had this issue on my Nexus 7 tablet once or twice. It randomly resolved itself I don't remember how. You can try deleting your google account, uninstalling all the play store and google play updates and reinstalling them. That may help.
Good luck.
I have this issue too and have been unable to resolve it.
I have the same issue. I'm to the point where I simply leave them be and eventually they download and updates. It sometimes works if I restart the download, reboot the phone, switch from wifi to data to wifi again, things like that.
This might be overkill, but ever since I factory reset the phone I no longer have this issue

Try clearing the cache of the google play store app in settings, if not then all its data. Also, if you just upgraded to Nougat it would be wise to make a factory reset (in recovery mode) to clean up the residual Marshmallow files, if you don't feel comfortable with that, then at least clear your device's cache and Dalvik (in recovery mode)

Multiple problems-Notifications delayed, Play Store downloads stuck, Some apps broken

Hi, I have a Galaxy S10+ on Verizon in the USA.
Having a few major problems that I just can't figure out:
1. When I try to download apps from the Play store, the download gets to 99 or 100% but never completes the installation. The fix is to go into settings/apps/show system apps/download manager and "force stop." Then the installation will complete.
2. Some apps don't work correctly. For example the CBS Radio News app starts streaming audio, then stops a few seconds later. And the ParKing app sometimes records my location upon disconnection from my car's bluetooth, and sometimes it doesn't.
3. Notifications from all apps are totally unreliable. Sometimes they'll come right away. Sometimes not for hours, and sometimes all at once. And sometimes when tapping on a notification it will bring you into the app. while sometimes it will do nothing.
WHAT I TRIED:
Tried rebooting, clearing data and cache on problem apps.
Cleared data and cache on "Google", Google Play Store and google play services.
Cleared phone's cache partition.
Uninstalled and reinstalled broken apps.
I THOUGHT I FOUND THE SOLUTION:
All these problems went away a month or so ago when I logged out of my google account on the phone. Iogged back in and it all worked great! I thought the problem was solved, but now it's all happening again. Logged of the the google account and back in, but it's still broken this time.
AND:
I had similar problems with my Galaxy S7, and thought the new phone would fix these problems! Is it possible there's something wrong with my google account? How could I have the same problems on both phones?
I haven't yet tried a factory reboot on the S10+, but I did do it on the S7, and after working for a while, the problems came back.
Additional info:
Mobile data and wifi have strong signals.
No custom ROMs, not rooted or anything, just stock the way it came. Only downloaded apps from Play Store. Nothing sideloaded.
All battery optimization is turned off. Power mode set to "high performance."
I've looked everywhere for a solution and have come here to the ultimate experts. You're my last hope!
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

Lot's of problems (mainly unable to install/update apps)

I'm having a bunch of problems, most of it seems to be related, but i'm not sure. I was having these problems in android 9, and they persisted after i made the update to 10.
The main problem is that I cannot update or install the apps from Google Play store reliably. The download gets stucked with 'Download pending' or somewhere between 90-99%. My connection is fine, no network problems whatsoever. The same problem happens in many wifi networks and in mobile connection. Sometimes, after rebooting the phone a lot of times, i can install 1 or 2 apps before getting stuck again.
I tried to force stop/wipe data from download manager, google play services, google play store and did not help. In fact, now is buggier than ever, and i got a permanent play store notification with a never ending progress bar saying "Concluindo a configuraĆ§Ć£o" (portuguese for finishing configuration).
Other minor issues:
a lot of times I do not get any messages/notifications until I unlock my phone. My whatsapp web stop working, then I unlock my phone and start to receive 4875389475 messages.
Sometimes google app notify me of some news, i click the notification and nothing happens. HOURS LATER, the news shows up in my screen when i'm doing something else.
The Google Calendar widget does not show the content on the home screen (keeps saying 'loading'), but if I open the app, it works ok (inside the app, not in the widget).
I can't sync time with my carrier (always worked on every phone). But time is correct, nonetheless
Anyone having problems like these? Any solution? I don't know more what to do =(
Try doing any one or all of these depending on if one fixes it over the other:
1. Boot into recovery mode (power + volume up + bixby buttons) and do a factory data reset. This will erase everything on the phone.
2. No dice? Find out your bootloader version and flash the stock firmware you're on with Odin. This will also erase everything on the phone.
3. Still nothing? Well then it's time to claim warranty!
