All,
Due to the recent accidental leak of Samsung eMMC vendor commands allowing write to protected eMMC areas, we are now able to write CID values on production devices.
Beaups has written an awesome tool called 'SamsungCID' (found here: https://github.com/beaups/SamsungCID). This makes the process all teh simpler!
I have built this tool from his source, and used it on a multitude of devices that use a Samsung eMMC. It works without flaw on the Moto G (Second Generation), Galaxy S5 (VZW/ATT, though, ATT doesn't have a Developer Edition that I am aware of), and many, many others.
How does this apply to you?
The Note Edge uses a Samsung eMMC (I believe, no teardown I can find definitively says so), and has a Developer Edition. This means that it is (most likely) vulnerable to this exploit.
How can I help this progress?
I need a few thing to make this work:
- A few testers with Production devices, and root (temp-root should work fine) -- I will contact these people individually, do not ask here to test.
- One person with a Developer Edition that has root (need an aboot dump, and them to run one command).
If any of you know of someone with a Developer Edition, please get them in contact with me. I can be reached on Hangouts, or on Telegram (@npjohnson).
PLEASE do not post your CID publicly.
Me again, unfortunately the seller didn't have the aboot backup of my Dev Ed Edge.
I'm fairly certain the one on my device is locked, but I can try to get you a copy of it after work.
Like I said, I have permanent root, just no bootloader write access so no custom recovery/firmware. I'm stuck on 5.0.1 BOJ7
I take it progress is at a standstill?
I'm really hoping for a breakthrough. One way or another. Please dont feel like noone is interested, because this guy sure is.

I have my Verizon de Edge.
Thanks for your help, hometech99! Have you gotten in contact with npjohnson?
Yes.. No reply. Maybe he found one.
I will donate whatever to this cause. Was planning to try the N4 version, but will gladly wait for a more stable edge edition. You're the best!

I wonder if they're on the verge of a breakthru with the Note 5 because that would likely take precedence. But yeah Im looking forward to using xposed framework and modules and custom recovery. Ill keep checking back
I think all that needs to happen is the file that's out there for the Note 4 needs to be altered with a Developer Edition CID for the edge but I just don't know how to do it I'm not a developer....
---------- Post added at 03:55 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:10 PM ----------
I'm pretty sure all the hard work is already been done and it's just an alteration of a Couple files, I've already flashed the software on my Edge and and it worked but because its a SM-915V and not a
SM-910V won't convert it.

The Verizon edition of this phone was and still is very unpopular. The release date kept getting pushed back and the Edge seemed like an experiment IMO. I thought it would be a liability. I got this phone for free by dumb luck thru a Verizon error. If it was up to me I would have just gotten the note 4. But i have no money for full price phones to keep grandfathered data plans so this was a godsent miracle. I digress.
This is a charity project i presume. I doubt its very hard but theres not much (or any) reward for the developer who feels like throwing us a bone. Im sure npjohnson has a paypal link for gratuities. Just sayin.
They just released the full exploit for the Note 4. I'm sure they're inundated with requests and questions concerning that.
I'll be waiting patiently, I have no doubt they'll get to us soon enough. Anyone brave enough to try the Note 4 exploit on their Edge?

Read someone else already tried. Didn't do any damage but didn't succeed either. This phone would be amazing running CM. I'll certainly donate to whoever gets it Edge compatible.
I have released the cid and aboot for stock note edge DevEd 4.4.4 to npjohnson so you guys with retail may still have a shot at this. Don't smash your phone's just yet lol.

Does KingRoot still achieve temp root on 5.0.1?
I've tried a couple times now using NewKingrootV4.85_C139_B255_en_release_2016_03_29_1 05203.apk which is the one being used on the Note 4 prior to converting to DE and have been unsuccessful. I'm not sure if its just because of the instability or if I need to be on a different version of android.

I didn't know if any of the ATT PREORDERED NOTE 3's were out yet or not - but am curioius to find out if ATT is going to lock the bootloader for this phone like they did for the S4?
I think it is inevitable, but I was hoping that maybe they wouldn't be
If this is in the wrong forum for this, let me mknow or have the moderator delete this - I looked and couldn't find any other threads for the NOTE 3.
Anyone?
PS - if the bootler is locked for the ATT Varient - I was thinking of buying an unlocked phone - any difference between the N9000 and N9005?
99% its going to be locked. Makes me want to wait for Nexus 5. To much of a headache for Samsung.

I loved my NOTE 2 - got the S4 for the processor and camera - and want the Note 3 for the same reasons. The LOCKED BOOTLOADER thing is a bunch of crap - and it was a sad day when ATT started doing it. I doubt they will ever change policy, but I sure wish they would. It's one thing to lock a contract phone..I think I can understand their reasons for wanting to do that - but if I OWN the device - what business do they have preventing me from using it fully? arghh....oh well, fingers crossed we are both wrong - but I think your assessment was correct.
It's already been confirmed as locked by designgears. Great developer btw. Do a search. Also, look at the dev section cwm thread. Notice which models are missing? Att and Verizon.

T-mobile note 3 working on AT&T as in LTE as well? 3g should work without any issue I would think.
If so it would make perfect sense to purchase a t-mobile n3 outright just for the unlocked bootloader.
Yes, LTE as well. Full compatability. Along with a few extra bands. Just need to confirm this week with a real device.
There is a bigger thread on here discussing this. Check the Q&A forum.

So what does the future look like for the N900A? Does the locked bootloader mean the only way to obtain root access will be through an exploit someone may eventually stumble upon? Will it most likely never be flashable, or is anything a possibility at this point? I have one on preorder and it's feeling like more of a downgrade all the time...

It's basically the same situation as the AT&T S4 with the newest knox firmware. Most likely an exploit found on that will also work on the AT&T note 3. I don't think anything is 100% secure but it may be a long time till one is found. I don't know if safestrap can be adapted or not. As far as flashing roms it depends on how much the phone is locked down but in the past if it was using a signed kernel then a custom rom could be flashed as long as it kept the stock kernel. You can be sure though that some very talented people are working on it. It's just a waiting game at this point.

I was about where you were at in October. I've got a decent chunk of Linux/C experience, but most of it is just reading/learning/searching and putting the pieces together. It's just really time consuming
It is sad how quickly people are dismissing it as impossible. people said the same thing about the Razor...
Unfortunately there are currently only two devs working on this @ryanbg (he is mostly working on N3) and @Surge1223 (he is mostly working on S4).
Here are the things needed for any phone to be unlocked.
1. Large userbase.
2. Most (if not all) variants of the phone has locked bootloader.
3. No developer edition phone.
4. Ungreedy dev who is not going to sell off the exploit to the oem or carrier in exchange of money.
5. Nice enough "guaranteed" bounty for it to be worth dev's time.
6. Dev who is not scared to be sued by the carrier/oem for releasing unlocked bootloader/exploit/signing key.
And in this case we are missing most of the above requirements, if not all.

Well from what I understand there have been a few posts on other forums about Adam Outler posting a picture on his G+ showing Secure boot off but he later had to delete it because people didn't understand that Sboot being off isn't the same as a bootloader unlock. So maybe if he can get that far there is a way for everyone to do it and the right hole just hasn't been found yet. I am very very proud of our devs and think if anyone can do it it will be someone on XDA. I am hoping for a bootloader unlock but I have to agree it does look a bit grim.

Nah. It was actually @ryanbg who achieved that secureboot:none status and it was his picture that he sent it to adam AFAIK adam doesn't even have note 3 (ppl where trying to crowd fund it but mods kept deleting those threads for one reason or another..so he actually never got N3 in his hand).
P.S. I'm just hoping that some dev has already cracked the bootloader but is waiting on S5 release before posting it. :fingers-crossed: @designgears already has the S5 firmware but hasn't posted it yet.

Love my Note 4 Dev Ed, but the thought of something happening to it encouraged me to buy another as a backup. My luck, they'll finally come up with a Root exploit for the retail edition now.
so maybe root soon for Verizon devices ?

Still trying to get root. A Samsung help person told me the bootloader was locked by default and there was no unlock method. (Posted screen cap in another thread) but that doesn't make sense. Either she didn't read my text when I said I had the developer edition or she was clearly too dumb to qualify for the job she had. There would be no point in dev editions if they were exactly like the retail versions. Anyone have one of these they want to sell? Been looking everywhere.
Anyone?
Will the limitation on most G4 models (unrootable, locked) forever burden the independent development scene?
I wanna buy the rootable international version but I'm afraid that the limitations on other models would mean less development (less LG4 custom roms/kernel/etc to choose from).
Is this just a minor issue until someone finds a method to unlock all phones? It's literally the only reason I didn't buy it yesterday.
Patience. Root will come. Any dev who wants a $2000+ payday will figure it out soon enough, according to 1 sizeable bounty on XDA...
The phone is great without root anyway...I too desperately miss some features on the unrootable dual SIM G4, but no way near enough to stop me getting it now before root. I'd be posting this in the root thread/s, there's plenty of them...

That was a bit silly... all dev XDA phones (G4) are rooted. They need to develop a safe and efficient alternative for end users without the potential for bricking which is why it's not released yet, so technically "we have root", but it's just not released/widespread yet. Check the other G4 boards - one of the main contributors, Autoprime, confirms my comments above. But... if you can't wait, you can't wait...

Do't worry guys, for Root is on its way. It might take a little bit of time, but it is better to wait and get a safe root method rather than end up with a bricked device.
Just remember, our Devs are people too, they have real life issues, goals, and plans, So it IS NOT like they can just sit at their computer 24/7 until they get everything wrapped up in a nice little package for you.
Hello all, I'm wondering if anyone has started a bounty for rooting this device. As it compares to the S8 itself, the hardware is the same in a much less soy-esque packaging. I like everything about this device except for it's lack of dev support.
I'd be willing to start it off with $100 dollars USD to begin with. (I'd also be interested in contacting some devs to help fuzz the thing / provide dumps / do what I can)
It would be a wonder to see this thing rooted and it's assumed to be possible if the S8 had received one.
I'll give this thread a nice bump since it seems like the Active is coming to other US carriers soon enough.
I'm in for $50 usd (or worth of btc/eth)
Want this phone on TMo but need root
EDIT: i'm good for $50, but to be clear, needs to work on the TMo variant which is coming out later this month (I will NEVER buy another AT&T phone -- the most locked down bootloaders ever!).
I can contact some of the devs i worked with in the original SamPWND root method and see if they would be willing to take the task on. Will report back shortly with update!

For the time being, I just brought the phone back and got an S8. That does mean that I won't be able to help with any sort of development for obvious reasons. I'll be sure to pick up an active if something goes on and I am still good for 100 dollars.
I really needed root sooner than I thought for some specific stuff, it's rough not being able to afford proper unlocked devices from the OEM..

I'd be willing to start it off with $100 dollars USD to begin with. (I'd also be interested in contacting some devs to help fuzz the thing / provide dumps / do what I can)
It would be a wonder to see this thing rooted and it's assumed to be possible if the S8 had received one.

That would be rad, post an update when / if you hear from them. It's appreciated.
(If I don't destroy this slippery piece of glass)

Well I can do it probably easily but without a device to actually prove it works it's kinda useless.

Yeah, I know.. It got down to a point where there was one day left to return it hassle free and root was rather important.
I'm still willing to pitch in for a root method, you'll just need someone else to test now.
I have an s8 active and I would be willing to test it. I'm fairly tech savvy I would just need instructions and I would most certainly help in anyway I can!!!!

I would pitch in but I'm always short in the wallet. As I said though I have my own device that I could offer as a guinea pig! I wanted to thank you for bringing some attention to this device and still offering your original proposed bounty
Also an s8 active owner and willing to try it! I'm pissed that tethering is locked, it's such a load of BS.
Has anybody checked out the thread by chainfire about signing boot images?? There's other Sammy guys in the mix too interesting thread for sure

Do you have a device to test with? If so I'll do this tonight
I have a tmobile s8 active and I'm willing to be a guinea pig if it means root
AT&T s8 active owner here. I'm willing to test root methods as long as I can get a grace period to review said methods and code.

Ill see what i can do tonight if i have time, otherwise soon. The only risk, as with all other root methods, is it not working and having to reflash stock firmware

Don't own the device or a US s8 but from my experience with the s7 active and flashing s7 roms on the active and them working I would guess that root can be obtained the same way with the same methods used kernel wise as in kernel image setup or which ever combination method was used for the s8? Just a uneducated thought I had. Aside from the s7A I haven't bought an American US branded phone since 2013. Another idea I have would be since they both share the same everything, can you use the root method for the s8? My experience with the 7active was the active button didn't work and the back and menu buttons were broken but other than that all worked. Same theory for your s8A but since you don't have physical buttons I'd say success is 90%
I say again success is 90% if you flash s8 firmware on the active and take the same root method as the active. Battary will be wonky but you'll have root lemme know if method works please.
Also, hard brick is unlikely since everything hardware wise minus the battary is the same.
