Hey guys, could it be possible that the mighty 23mp of our z5 is in reality only 8mp upsampled to 23mp? No third-party app shows the full resolution like on older sensors of Xperia z1-z4.. And Sony won't give the "super" image processing algorithm to the Sony "open" device project!? Maybe the Devs from Sony just don't know how to hide the 8mp to 23mp techniques.. So they don't give it free to other Developers to make the poor z5 camera better? The details when zooming by 23mp shots are so washed out and muddy, I can't believe it's actually 23mp.. I guess because of that, Sony is hiding something.. Don't they? Why else they are acting so strange?
10.04.16 Edit:
okay, maybe it has a 25mp sensor, but Xeon explained it very good here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=66263647
If they weren't 23MP sensors, someone would've found that out a while ago and taken SONY to court for false advertising. I doubt SONY would be that dumb. And the details might look fine on a normal day, as long as you don't zoom in too far. The maximum resolution is 5520 x 4140 which is really, really big. Even the Galaxy S6 with a 16MP camera only goes up to 3984 x 2988 on a 4:3 ratio.
Edit: Here's a photo with of my dog. Then a photo of it zoomed in on his noise. Look's pretty detailed to me.

actually there is a third-party app called "CyanogenOS Camera Next" which recognize the 22.9MP sensor!
I haven't tried capturing with 22.9MP option, but it's available in Camera Next!
Ah okay, Interesting statements. Maybe it's just the poor software from Sony ?Thanks guys
It's definitely poor software from Sony, the camera is good but has soo much more potential

I've read that most third-party apps identify Z5 camera as only 8Mp due to a buggy system file which has a wrong identifier value of this CMOS. It seems Camera Next is a bit smarter, as mentioned below.

I think that is because Sony need to make those other apps think it is higher res as well .
I still believe Sony are software interpolating the photo's to 23MP, because the results just lack too much detail.
To be honest, I as well as many others I am sure would just prefer 12MP done right

i just tested that app it works pretty well although the burst mode is ultra slow but the quality seems clear like the ones shown in the ads
I'm also pretty sure that the 23 mp thing is just a kind of trick.... SONY won't let you know anything about the camera. If you open AIDA64 under devices it can't even detect the deviceID or sensor type.
I can't understand how 8MP resolution pics look better than 23MP
Actually it is a 25MP sensor or to be more precise 24.77MP.

What sort of confirms that the sensor is not the full MP rating as suggested is that all manufacturers that are using the same sensor don't have the same resolution

Well if they want to limit and resort to fixed pixel binning. They have native 25MP for the IMX300 sensor.

Soooo much noise and artifact in those shots, resolved detail not very good either.
That said, looks like HTCs best camera ever (apart from perhaps the Mozart with its Xenon Flash, but I haven't seen many examples from that handset yet).
I think that mobile phones' cameras are not for the ones who are obsessed with photo quality.
I am sure long years I will prefer to carry a DSLR camera even though I have got a 8 mp camera integrated phone.
i agree buying a phone based on its camera is silly, the only time i have ever used my phone camera was when i got a parking ticket so i took photos of the signage and my car wrote a letter to the council and got off without having to pay
if i know im going to take photos i just take my DSLR

More photos..............
Any chance in taking an evening shot (sunset/sunrise) without flash.
Also if possible another two low light shots with and without flash (basically the same shot for comparison on how well the camera handles low lighting with & without a flash).
Cheers.
Ouch those shots are really poor in terms of quality, noise, too strong noisereduction, chromatic abberation and hell everything.
I'm afraid Nokia N8 wins this round.

You don't need to be obsessed with photo quality to demand more from your mobile phone camera than the Desire HD is offering though. For many of us the camera is quite an important consideration because day to day photography with our phones is part of our regular use (most of us don't carry a DSLR all the time, eh?). Its nice to have shots that are 'good enough' for that kind of casual photography, and many other non-HTC phones offer that.
I won't, and haven't ever, based a decision to buy a phone solely on the camera, but certainly its a consideration, more important for some of us than others (but you can't dictate to others how they come to a decision to get a phone or not).
With a quick searched on the internet, I noticed that the Galaxy S4 has a sensor camera equivalent / equal Xperia Z, but your pictures are generated with 4Mb to 6.5MB, while the Xperia Z is 1Mb to 2.5Mb.
Follow the link to get an idea of the difference image!
We must inform Sony that we are completely unhappy with the image compression!

First off, replace "we" with "I". Second, SGS4 uses an unknown sensor with the same megapixel count as the Sony Exmor sensor, but then megapixels mean nothing anyway. Also, while there is a big discrepancy in file size, there is a not very big discrepancy in photo quality while zoomed in (compare photos at http://www.gsmarena.com/samsung_galaxy_s4_vs_sony_xperia_z-review-915p8.php) if you look at image sharpness and ignore colour saturation and that sort of things. I don't see why the XZ photo file sizes should then be doubled just because the SGS4 has larger photo sizes.
compression isn't bad, in my opinion
its the same sensor.check anadtech s4 dissasmbly.by the way they are using same sensor with different module.i dont have a Z or S4 to talk about quality though
The images quality will much much more better if Sony reduce the compression, or at least let user decide jpeg quality.
I think the issue isn't about compression but denoise algorythms.

Its a combination of both compression (jpeg) and noise suppression (when using high ISO)
The amount of compression/suppression applied is ridiculous.
Does the "developers" of the cam part know anything about digital photography at all?
Paying premium for a low end camera....Sony think the customers are stupid?

Probably because 3mp captures less detail, so you see less artifacting/noise

The calculation is simply. The size of the sensor can acquire a certain quantity of light then if you use 8mpx or even 20mpx, for the sensor is too much so he have to recover the definition with huge processing and in this case you will see on the pictures all this kind of artifacts and noise, but when you use 3mpx the sensor is even much more and then you see amazing quality colors and nice pictures but just when you zoom a bit into the picture you will see the distortion because of less pixel density. That 20mpx or 8mpx is just to much for the sensor of Z1.

the red on the iphone looks washed out or better said, the amount of light on the car is captured more on it. the z5 captures the real color from my perspective
In my opinion Z5 is better than Iphone 6+ and GS6, colors of the 2 is slightly saturated.
Regardless of color accuracy, the resolution increase still does not helps getting sharper images. There is too much noise reduction applied, especially compared to iPhone 6. Apple here does a decent job although I'd rather have much more noise and no NR applied in camera. Worst offender is LG, which applies an insane post-NR sharpening.
I think we should wait for production samples and hopefully some 3rd party app that can leverage better on this new sensor. Otherwise there is no real advantage against Samsung or Apple.
As for color accuracy, it really comes down to the app and how much processing is done. On my screen (which is calibrated, but it's not best quality panel) and to my eye Z5 has decent overall color rendition, but I prefer the G4 in the first picture (less punch but the overall colors are more accurate) and the iPhone in the third.
In the end, we are not yet at compact camera level - maybe next iteration (z6 or z7 or whatever they will call it). I'd really love to have an RX100 performance squeezed into a phone

All photo's on the left side are made by Z5 and right side is the note 5

Am I the only one seeing that low light photos look good on Note 5. Specially the example you gave, Note 5 has more details compared to Z5. Yea we all know that Samsung dose produce more warmer pics which makes the photo looks yellowish, but if you take a closer look the noise reduction is so aggressive in Z5.

P.S: Ah no wonder you seem to mix up the two photos. Note 5 indeed do look better here.
Sony for some reason still cannot make a good camera. Note 5 does look much better in almost every situation.
Also look at the sky in that one pictre. Z5 completely burnt while Note 5 shows some nice detail

These pictures looks awesome. and yea it got lotta details too. We need further tests to see how it's done. Since they can always get it right with software.
New camera module absolutely promising. Specially colour accuracy.

Think its time you get some glasses bro. The first one and clearly the best low light photo is made with the Z5 not the note. Even if you zoom in on the billboard etc you see that the note blurs and has to much overexposed. But both are good camera's tho/.

WOW those pictures look indeed pretty awesome!!! But they are taken by a pro tho with a tripod.
I am a Sony Fan But i Must admit the samsung note 5 is killing sony camera what a poor detail in z5 i hope there is improvement in the last release
Yea Note 5 has a great camera indeed, but I am pretty sure this is related to Software, and eprice device doesn't have the latest camera UI that means it's not running on the latest build, so untill then we can't really say which is better.
But overall Sony has good colour accuracy when it's day-time, I hope it'll be fixed with updates. I really want is more control over the camera such as Manual shutter speed and raw. Hope to see more improvement before the phone's released.
Sony has never been good at software, just hardware. It's just a... Mystery

+1
Specially when it comes to Camera software they don't seem to be doing great.
I am always surprised that despite making good cameras and selling camera parts to other phone manufacturers, Sony phones have the worse cameras in the mobile phone industry. The Z3 camera is terrible relative to Apples and Samsungs and their previous phones were even worse. Hopefully they finally fix it with the Z5.
Wow....

What the actual ****, Sony?
I always noticed something was sheit about this camera and I kind of knew it was about the image processing but never realised just how had it is.

How could you possibly ruin a picture so much? Not to mention the raw image from the 21mp shot has a much better quality than a frame from a video!
Does anyone know of a way to disable this?
Sony has messed up the camera with lag to launch it and to do a capture... I dont understand really what is the issue to improve that. I have readed that RAM is important.

RAM might be related to the launch issue but where is the problem in just disabling the anti-noise algorithm altogether?

Yeah, where is it. Algorithm is all broken around... Really it isn't understable. Sometimes I think if Sony has something under contract with the others companies and it messes up the software post process.... It's the unique lame in Sony right now if you see the Galaxy S7, LG G5, Huawei P9... Curious thing that Sony is the coolest thing in the sensor industry. Casualty or...

It's nothing short of ridiculous that this phone does not fully support Camera 2 API yet. Sony has been marketing this phone all around the camera but they don't deliver anything.
I'll put up a post on the Sony forums and see how it turns out.
So if we want a good quality picture, record in 4k and take a screenshot? Lol

The best camera in the world, isnt? lol
I've noticed when you double tap to zoom in it zooms in A LOT. Meaning you see more noise/blurriness. In other phones when you double tap to zoom it doesn't zoom in as much so it looks sharper. But the camera is actually pretty good, SA sometimes gets it completely wrong in low light situation and the shutter lag is ridiculous. Takes too long to take a picture.

That is literally what I did when I took a bike trip yesterday. Recorded about 1:40 minutes which resulted in almost a gigabyte of video and I extracted exactly 47 still images out of that.
You need a lot of storage but it's a possible workaround. Sad this camera ruins an otherwise great phone.
the camera supports manual controls with fv-5 camera app . Just no raw suport

Nothing comes close as stock app with manual controls, like samsung or lg camera apps.
I tried that camera fv 5 or how it was called actualy, and i was not impressed at all.
I really like this phone, but I am dissapointed with the camera.
Also camera interface sucks, it is okay for auto mode but for manual mode you have to go in settings just to change iso or hdr? Really Sony?

They seemed to have improved it significantly in the Xperia X, which is ridiculous as its specs aren't more powerful than the Z5. They are also advertising 0.6 shutter response from standby and "almost instantaneous" shutter response from normal use of the app. Yet if you look at a few of the MWC demos, you can see the shutter response is faster but it still captures very slightly after... On the show floor there were two demos emphasizing the autofocus and shutter from standby, but few people filming there actually showed the shutter response conclusively.
Third party apps have the potential to have less shutter lag but I found the on-screen camera button and physical button to be often unresponsive, probably because the autofocus is badly optimized.
