First off, welcome to XDA
Secondly, do you mean the 3G Camera or earpiece or the light sensor?
Can you provide image of what you are describing?
Check out page 25 of manual
Thank you Spartan for you hospitality, no this sensor in the left side, it is not camera and light sensor! you can see it only in some angle, stright look will not show you this place. later i will try to highlight in pic.

No sensor, just your imagination, scratch or build defect.
I dont mention that it is sensor, but what is this? please see in the angle to your apparatus and you will see it, maybe something that producers did for future uses? just take a look!

I have check on my girlfriend's TouchHD and there is....... NOTHING!
There is nothing there. Your phone might have some kind of minor manufacturing flaw that makes you think there is something there. I have had my HD for a year and have never heard of anything being there. I looked at it from all angles, and compared it to the right side. My phone shows nothing. Both the left and the right side look the same.
Thank you all for your attempts, but I will tru to put pic of it (if camera will capture it), and maybe than you can explain me this place usebility. Will try to give a pix on monday!!!

I highly doubt there's anything. I've recently opened up my phone to replace the screen and had to mess around in there with the camera/speaker/light sensor and there was nothing else.
Please see attached photoes, can anybody explain this window dedication? Waiting for your replyes.
looks like a air bubble under the screen protector.
Oh common guys, it is not bubble, not scratch, please look on top of htc logo untill calldynamic, this thing placed between them. Mayby mine is special, super-assembled!!!
ok, i was doubtful but i checked anyway and couldnt see anything, then i saw your pics and thought id give it another try and nope, nada, then i figured id pull it to bits and have a gander and inside and still nothing.
Whilst this was slightly entertaining im affraid to say you have probably got a bubble under the first layer of screen.
That is the most likely explination, the chances you have a one off device that no one else has which has some mystical new sensor is so small you'd be better off putting your life savings and the money you made selling your house on the lottery in the hope you'll hit the big one!
Ok, if accept the version that it is bubble under first layer, can you explain why this bubble has so right geometric forms? The guy next to me has an IPhone, and even him thought that it is porximity sensor like his apple has. Strange and Mistyc!!!
I agree that the shape is very geometrical, and I can understand how it would make you think there is something special there. It is unique, but I still don't think it's related to any functions or features the phone has. Look at the letters "htc". You have a slight frame around each letter that is the same shade/color as the "window" you are referring to. My "htc" letters have no such frame around them. The black of the phone comes up directly to where the white letters start.
So, I think it's some kind of strange manufacturing effect.
I'll even attach the service manual for you to look at.
Download service manual here
To be truthfully honest I thought you were seeing things until you posted your 3 pics. Yes, it does look geometrical in shape, but I can assure you that this is not a sensor, button or anything else intended by HTC. As stated by others previously is looks like a flaw in some way, either on the device itself or caused by the skin protector. If you take your device to any retail shop and compare it with another HD this may ease your concerns and I'm sure the staff in the shop would also say as everyone else here has.
Absolutely agree with htc letter, before your post i don't even see this feat, well, i think i should agree with that this window has no any function. Besides i saw off. manual, no-nothing. OK, waiting for another variants of reply.

Well, first of all device was bought not in EU, second, in my country very hard to find even person who owns device, too much expensive for our market, i'm even not talking about shops to compare my apparatus with others. By the way, does anybody know, whether in this forum chats somebody from HTC. i would asked him directly.

I would just ask HTC directly on their contact site:
http://www.htc.com/europe/CS_Mail.aspx
Looks like something trapped under the screen protector, did you peel it back and check?
Hello, just one simple question: where's proximity sensor in the A500/A501? I have the Acer flip case but if I close it the screen stays on... Should I enable it somewhere in the settings?
Are you referring to the ambient light sensor? If so, its on the top left bezel, between the volume rocker and the rotation lock. If you look at the black glass there in bright light, you will see a small dark spot, that is the sensor.
As for a setting, the screen will dim based on ambient light levels, not shut off. The setting for it is located by tapping the clock, then the settings button, then the word "auto" next to the brightness slider.
Was this post helpful? If so give thanks
The correct answer is a question... What proximity sensor?
this is driving me nut
the Acer case will always partially cover this one and the dispaly will fluctuate the brightness in random... ;(
pushing A500 firmly into the case solves for a while before happening again - think I need new case...
Based upon this site that contains the tech specs, http://gadgetian.com/10395/acer-iconia-tab-a501-specs-price, the A501 should contain a "proximity sensor to turn it on or off". Please note that if you google for "Acer iconia tab proximity sensor" you will get a number of results, so I doubt that it's just a mistake of one site.
So there's no way to turn the screen off while the tab is properly fitted in its sleeve?
Couldnt the light sensor be used as a proximity sensor? With software I mean.
I have checked my tablet from top to bottom and even made some sensor test to make sure that everything is working and I never saw a listing for a proximity sensor so I'm sure that we don't have one (or a barometer... that was also one of the things that was possible to test ).
@cd85233: Probably yes but I wonder what kind of impact it would have on the battery.
there is no proximity sensor on the A500 nor A501. refered to spec sheet and hardware implementation... unless they changed it since last release.
who told you so ?
Guys, there's an app called tasker. You can use that to tell the tablet to lock up when it receives less than 3 or so % light reading from the light sensor. It works great on the gtab. Still waiting for the case for my iconia to test it out.

Just google for "iconia tab proximity sensor", you'll get a bunch of results
Sent from my A501 using XDA App
still an ambient light sensor, not proximity sensor. As for if it could bbe used as one by software I'm not sure. For the case, look up roocases for the acer iconia on amazon. I have the folio multi-angle black n love it!

This works 100%. Just did it on my Iconia.
Set the trigger to be light between 0 and 5% and the action to be "Display"->System lock.
Let me know if you guys need help but this is easy and works AMAZINGLY. I don't know if more battery use occurs to poll the sensor though. Will report if I see it in the battery usage.

Google FLAT EARTH and you will get plenty of results -
Just because someone calls it that doesn't make them right.
Go ask a PC repairer how any times a customer has asked to have their hard drive partition fixed when what the customer means is something completely different. Meaning people often use what they think is technical jargon to imply knowledge they don't actually possess

Ok, no need to attack Just asking, and just telling you from where my speculation came from Various sites lists it in the tech specs so I was trying to understand whether I have a faulty sensor or not. End of the story!

I get it, now you know n its kinda like how one off the wall chinese tablet has a "gravity sensor". Is it an accelerometer? Gyroscope? Our does it merely sense the presence of gravity? Will the device go haywire if used in outer space? Who knows! Lol tech specs can be painfully vague and inaccurate. Especially on a company who can't even figure out to name the source code for their kernel something that doesn't make it look like a help file, THEN place it in the documentation portion of the site, good job Acer! Point being I get the confusion

LOL ...
Just enter that into XDA search... no need to go as far as Google ...hahaha !
I've recently changed the whole LCD/Touch assembly ... and now my proximity sensor is not working! I didn't re flash the ROM after the service, so I know that it was working on that build before...
When I run Phone Tester app it detects the proximity sensor is detecting Far... and when I place my finger over it it detects Near, but it takes around 30 or more seconds, to go back to Far again...
What could be the cause of this? The Light sensor works normally... I don't see any dirt there... but the "hole" does look "hollower" ... maybe that lens thingy fell out... could this be it?
Thanx
proximity lens

I think those lenses are not so important, more important is to have a clean space between them and the outer space. It is possible to interfere some dirt/dust/whatever during replacing touchscreen/combo.
No I can correct you...Lenses and position of those is extremely important to light and proximity sensor.I had to find those lenses here in xda cause my hd2 had many problems without, the backlight regulation doesn t work, and even the proximity sensor was faulty
I'm also searching for that lense, does any1 know where can one be bought or found?

proximity sensor and light sensor had many problems without the lenses...Light sensor was changing my backlight only under the sun, instead now it s about 5 to 6 times more accurate, and even the proximity one gave me many accuracy problems.I had the same problem in a tmous and an european hd2,maybe there are some hardware revision more sensible, that works even without those lenses.
To anyone searching for those lenses,I can tell you it s really really hard to find, you have to search for someone who sell spare hd2 parts from a broken hd2.I couldn t find those lenses in any spare parts store,I asked to almost any ebay sellers and internet shops,I ve mailed to htc,I ve talked with an htc hardware technician in chat, and I ve tried to buy 3 new middle frame chassis that came without the lenses.I had trouble even to find a picture of those lenses, cause almost no one noticed those,i ve lost those changing my touch screen, and I think anyone with proximity sensor not turning on their screen have lost those lenses,or had gone out of position
Finally after 5 months I ve found those lenses here in xda

Hi,
oh man! can you tell me wher i can get this lens?
my proximity sensor without this lens make me crazy :-(
same here! where i can find it?
Can anyone recommend some applications that would successfully mimic a smart cover. I bought the official samsung case for my note and want this feature. I know it is not built in and I have downloaded so many apps to find out that they don't work well. The one on my phone works well though but that uses the proximity sensor which my note doesn't have. Can anyone make some suggestions? I will appreciate it!
try magnet locker.. U will have to place a magnet on the cover( after finding the sweet spot) to make it work

Hi, how are you?
What happens is that I stop working the iris when I put the liquid protector (nano hi tech), the point is that I'm not sure if it's chance or definitely this substance forms a film that prevents the sensor from reading the iris. Enter the test mode by dialing *#0*# and when you give the iris camera test you see a gray background with 2 circles and say this: $change: 15177986 $, $ Revision: #2 $.
If anyone knows anything about it, I would appreciate your help. regards

Hi, how are you? I already took it to the guarantee and they told me that it is the liquid protector, since they put a new iris camera and it does not detect the iris, because of the thin film that this product makes. Could it be possible? The worst case is that I have tried to remove it with a lot of chemicals but it does not work. someone knows with certainty that it is the best thing to remove this product. regards
