Nexus 7 (Stock 4.1.0) - Bricked after reboot - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone.
After trying multiple custom ROMs for the Google Nexus 7 2012 (nakasi/grouper), I decided to flash the stock 4.1.0 factory image. However, as my Nexus 7 came with 4.1.2, I flashed everything in the 4.1.0 factory image, except for the boot.img, for which I used the 4.1.2 version. I used the bootloader included in the 4.1.0 factory image.
I then locked the bootloader, and booted Android. Everything was working fine, however after rebooting it, the Nexus 7 seemed to be hard-bricked. There were no visible signs of charging, and I couldn't access the bootloader, recovery or system. I was able to access APX mode, which my Windows 10 laptop recognized. Having hard-bricked a Nexus 7 years ago, I took precautions and used NvFlash to backup the proprietary files from my Nexus 7.
I've tried holding the power and volume buttons for several minutes, charging it overnight (with different chargers and via USB and AC), and even disconnecting the battery from the motherboard for a whole hour.
It was working ever since early September 2015, when I purchased it from TradeMe.
Can anyone tell me how to unbrick my Nexus 7? Help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, what's the point of backing up NvFlash files if there's no way to restore the bootloader?

Have you tried using the Nexus Rootkit? I had a similar issue with my Nexus (2012 version) and that cleared it up.

Do you mean the Nexus Root Toolkit? Yes, I'm very familiar with it, but unfortunately as I can only access APX mode, the NRT isn't much use.

Yes, Nexus root toolkit* my bad.
Cursed be yon ancient technology... You say you bricked a year ago?
Have you used CMD and ADB on your PC?

I bought my first Nexus 7 in January 2013 and accidentally bricked it in October 2013. Then, in September 2015 I bought another one. In February 2016, I used NvFlash to backup the proprietary files from the device, which can apparently be used to unbrick it via APX mode. However, I have no idea how to restore the bootloader.
ADB and Fastboot aren't supported in APX mode, as APX operates on an even lower level than the bootloader.

Indeed. This is the place to look I'd say. However, I have no idea how to restore it either. Sorry my friend.
Aye... Thats no good. What purpose does APX serve if it causes the device to be inaccessible? I'm not entirely familiar with APX..

Neither am I. Apparently restoring the bootloader is possible on an ASUS Transformer, but that device has a different partition location, so I'm guessing I'll need the right number for my Nexus 7.
Maybe I should call it quits. I mean, I have a Nexus 4 in poor condition, and a Nexus 7 2013 (and my bricked Nexus 7 2012, of course). I'm thinking of buying a Motorola Moto G 2014 once I've saved up enough.

Yeah... the easiest thing would be to just leave it be... I just bought mine for $30 on ebay. In perfect condition. Do some looking if you really have your heart set on having it.
And I'd say its worth saving the extra bit and going for the Moto X. The specs are much much higher and its still fairly affordable.

Thread closed. After some experimenting, I finally reflashed the bootloader!

I've made a guide on XDA about how to do it, but type "nvflash -r --download 4 x.IMG" replacing "x" with a bootloader from a factory image.

apx mode??

ok i was flashing stock 4.1.2 image on my nexus, so i could upgrade to 4.2, but the nexus 7 toolkit (msskip) just stopped, so i pluged out my nexus but now it wouldnt enter the bootloader, but when i plug it in to my computer it ask me about apx drivers, this happend to my lg optimus 2x once but i could flash it back trough nvflash, but is my nexus 7 hardbricked ? do i need to send it back where i bought ? :crying:
RMA time I'm afraid, your bootloader is toast and there's currently no way to recover from that, a compatible process using nvflash isn't available for Nexus 7 (yet).
See my experiences with the same issue here. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1879228

[Q]Can't flash anything because bootloader freezes..Please Help

[SOLVED]
I used the Wugfresh Toolkit. I'm on 4.3. Bootloader version Flo-3.05.
I unlocked the bootloader. Whenever I try root it just hangs on "booting to custom boot.img" and the
bootloader is frozen (the buttons dont work) and need to do a hard reset to get out. The bootloader
freezing also happens when I try to push anything like a custom recovery.
The first time I tried pushing a custom recovery it seemed to work but now I dont have a recovery installed at all.
Is the problem the bootloader version Flo-3.05? I cant even find that much about that version.
Please help

Hi, mentallo...
I don't have one (yet)... but I think Flo is Googles codename for the New Nexus 7(2013).
In which case, you probably should be posting here.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=2409
And don't try to flash anything originally designed for the old Nexus 7(2012) on your new Nexus 7... as I suspect it will cause no end of problems.
I'm not even sure WugFresh has a toolkit available yet for the New Nexus 7.... but then I'm not a big toolkit user.
Rgrds,
Ged.
Oh my god, this is amazing. I bought this from ebay for $100 thinking its a first gen buts actually a 2nd gen. Brand New. Thanks for pointing that out. I'm flabbergasted.

No problem, mentallo...
My gasted is also equally flabbered. $100 at current exchange rates works out at approximately £64 UK pounds... which sounds too good to be true (my 1st gen N7 cost £200 around November of last year).
The new Nexus 7 differs from the old one visually (check Google Images), by having a wider bezel at the top and bottom. You also might want to check for a serial number (it's a transparent sticker on the back of the 1st gen model; I've no idea what it looks like on the new one).
But the bootloader, Bootloader version Flo-3.05, certainly suggests it's the real deal, as the official Google factory image has only been available for about a week (due to some legal wrangling between Google and Qualcomm)... so your device must have originally shipped with that bootloader. (In other words, it's hugely unlikely to be a fake).
Anyway, congrats. on a fantastic deal. Hope you can get everything working to your satisfaction.
Rgrds,
Ged.

[Q] Is there any way to boot a boot.img from APX mode?

Well, a few days ago I was using my nexus 7, and it was working fine. I went to go work out and put my nexus 7 down, when I came back it was completely bricked. No charging indicator, won't boot at all - no, not even into fastboot mode.
I have it in APX mode (it shows up in device manager as "APX"), and I'm wondering: is there any way to boot a boot.img so I can get it up and running again, or is my device a lost cause?
To my understanding no, you need a device specific backup made ahead of time.
See this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2455927
So unfortunately in your case you are more than likely out of luck, and for everyone else I would suggest make a backup now and store it on PC just in case
Good news is we should see a new nexus tablet in the next month or so...

Did you try to flash a factory image for tilapia (3g - Nexus) onto grouper (WiFi - Nexus)? This will not work and most likely that bricked your device ...

Attached you can find also all the factory images that appear in the menu of Nexus Root Toolkit
Thanks
Bye
If you connect the cable, does it go to charging mode?
@acolaja that's what I expected, sorry for you, but you had choosen the wrong one if you have WiFi only. I doubt that you can revive your tablet now.

Help reviving a Nexus 7 2013 Flo 32G

I need help reviving a Nexus 7 2013 Flo 32G.
This tablet has sat forgotten and dead for a couple of years. I am trying to bring it back to life. It has been several years since I have done any rooting and flashing on Android, so I am looking for a little guidance. I honestly do not recall what has left the device in its current state. But, basically it has no OS installed. The boot-loader version is FLO-04.04. I can get into recovery. The installed recovery is TWRP v2.8.6.0. I do not possess any Windows machines. I have Android Debug Bridge version 1.0.39 installed on Ubuntu 16.04.3 LTS. MTP is enabled.
But that is it. I am not able to locate the device through ADB using ‘adb devices’. As I say it has been several years since I have rooted around Android or used ADB. I did not use Linux the last time I was doing things like this. So, I am stuck as to how to proceed. I was hoping it was going to be a pretty straightforward process of picking a ROM and GAPS and flashing.
Of course not even being able to ABD into the device leads me to believe that, while not in over my head, I made need some help going forward.
Anyone care to volunteer some first steps?
TIA
Wrong forum dude. This forum is for the 2012 Nexus 7, not the 2013 Nexus 7.

It's fine. People make mistakes sometimes.
Also it looks like something majorly screwed up your Nexus 7. Hope you find a solution to fix it up sooner or later.
