Hey guys,
I've just tried updating my Nexus 7 to 4.1.2 OTA, after the download was installed it tried to reboot and it's just hanging on the Nexus logo boot screen. I've tried to boot in to recovery mode but I just get the little android with the red exclamation mark triangle.
My device is not rooted and was previously running completely stock firmware 4.1.1, never tweaked at all.
Any ideas would be very helpful - apologies if this is a glaringly obvious fix, I haven't searched much as I'm posting from my phone.
Many Thanks
I am having the same problem but mine is rooted. So I was probably thinking I was having the problem cos it's rooted.

Do you have the 4.2.1 bootloader? or it might not work.
Don't think so, it's completely standard. Been updated from 4.1.0 to 4.1.1 when I bought it, since then only change to the firmware I've made is today downloading 4.1.2.
Did you do a manual update or was it system self prompted update?
I was notified that an update was available by my device. I pressed install now, it downloaded and the device rebooted and started installing it. Then it triedvto boot back up and failed.
if this happened and you did NOT root or unlock the bootloader, then you are eligible for a replacement. go to the store you have bought it from and ask for a replacement unit. if you did unlock the bootloader, then you have to boot into bootloader and use this tool and select 9 after installation. it should return your device to stock, providing you can still boot into bootloader. good luck!

I was hoping that wouldn't be the case to be honest and that I'd be able to fix it myself, ah well. Thanks a lot for your help
Just so everyone knows, I took my tablet back and got a new one, which when updated broke again. I got a third tablet and contacted Google directly, they told me they can't really help but try updating again, which I did and bricked my 3rd device in a row. When I called Google again they said I need to speak to Asus (regarding this issue with Android software) in terms of getting another replacement. Which means I'll be left without a device until they replace it!
Wow, the same problem as I had.
My brand new, stock nexus 7 (4.1.1) informed me there was an update so I allowed it to install it.
It was connected to the PC during the whole process.
It installed the update, but got stuck on the boot screen (the X logo). It took too long so I suspected something went wrong...
In a few minutes I was forced to learn how to do a forced restart, enter the recovery menu, etc.
But sadly nothing helped, as it ALWAYS ended up showing that X logo and would not go further. So I decided for a drastic measure and wiped the device (reset to factory settings). Unsurprisingly, it then booted fine and the new update was there.
Of course I lost all my game saves and other data... Really pissed off, but decided to swallow it for the time being.
If this happens at the next update, I'll definitely say goodbye to the Nexus. Would be a shame though, as it's a lovely device, very handy.
Just for the record, I live in the EU and the device was bought in a brick and mortar shop, and it had 4.1.1 installed.

Hi. Slightly off topic, but maybe worth mentioning : I have exactly the same problem with the 4.1.2 OTA update of the Nexus S.
What did you do, reset to factory settings?

Yes, but I had some difficulties doing it, couldn't even tell you exactly how I managed to.
I'm really disappointed by this OTA update, it shouldn't be more complicated than flashing an alternative ROM.
Please help me... I have a Nexus 7 wifi edition (old version).
I installed wugfresh toolkit and tried to install factory 4.4
After about 15 minutes nothing was happening so I tried to reboot my Nexus 7. Now it is stuck in bootloader mode. It does not want to start. I tried reflashing stock again but it says USB debugging needs to be enabled, but I can't boot my device... how do I revive it please.. thank you
My device was already bootloader unlocked, and running 4.2 grouper JDQ39
Thank you

Hi I recently bricked my nexus 7 too and unbricked it myself. there aren't a lot of people willing to help here as I know, and I know I can help you. First thing first, there is noway you can brick your nexus 7, no matter what you have done, so just clam down.
to unbrick your nexus 7, there is what I suggest you to try>
1, download fastboot, adb. make sure they are the newest version.
2, download recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-grouper. this is a recovery img that you install into your nexus 7
3, get Google android USB driver!! uninstall every before you install this!!
4, put your neuxs 7 into boot loader mode by holding about 3 buttons.
5, connect your nexus 7 to your PC
6, If you are a windows using, using command prompt "fastboot.exe devices"
7, something should come up. then you are in the right track.
8, type fastboot.exe flash recovery recovery-clockwork-touch-6.0.4.3-grouper
9, you should get a message saying everything is install correctly.
10, using vol down to go the recovery mode on your device. The CWM should be installed!!!
11, Download any android ROM for nexus 7, and simply install it using CWM!!
12, Adb doesn't work on me because I can't get into USB debug mode. You have to use an OTG USB cable. Copy the ROM to an USB driver and connect that USB to your nexus using this OTG USB cable.
13, install!!! done!!!

Could you elaborate a little more on what step you picked from the main menu of that software? I'm not having any luck getting my Nexus fixed.
Posted my thread for help here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2560975
Guess I will try megapig's suggestions next. I've tried so many procedures and none of them are working.

I just uninstalled all the crap that the other software installed, then on MSKIP's software, I chose no. 1, then after that, I installed stock, can't remember the number but it is there...
Thanks, I did manage to get it fixed last night. Posted update in my thread.
Whew
Yesterday I rebooted my Nexus 7 after it froze while transferring some files onto the NAND, and the OS failed to load. I went into recovery and attempted to reflash the ROM I've been using for a few months, only to have it fail. I tried to revert to stock with the Nexus Toolkit, which failed, so I attempted a fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-group 4.23.img as my first step toward getting it back to stock. I tried with the copy I had, and got "InvalidState", so I google'd and discovered there were two versions of the 4.23 bootloader. Trying with the one that everyone was reporting to work, I got "Unknown Error Code", followed by "BadParameter" and then "Invalid argument". I then "fastboot reboot-bootloader", to try again after a reboot as I was getting nowhere, only to get a black screen. In Device Manager, my tablet shows up as "Unknown USB Device (Device Descriptor Request Failed)".
Is there anything I can do to revive it? I'm up for breaking it open and replacing parts.

Hello,
It sounds like your Nexus 7 may be hard bricked. If your Bootloader is no longer showing up you may need to send in your device to be repaired. At this time I do not know of a solution to the issue you are experiencing except to have it repaired. If you would like to proceed email me at [email protected]. Please place case number N140945296 in the subject line for reference.

Fastboot will help you get everything back. Don't have the steps but did it myself with my Nexus 10. Google the info like I did.

Striker there seems to be a case where the flash gets corrupt and gets write protected... Which seems to have happend to our nexus 7..
To bad ASUS havent released a APX tool to fix this.

My Nexus 7 (2012) went into a bootloop late last month.
It would not take a factory reset.
I had to go into fastboot mode to turn it off otherwise it would keep on rebooting.
I tried rooting it with the latest lollipop.
It still bootloops.
(I suspect because USB debugging was not on.)
I even resorted to taking it to a cellphone repair shop.
They think it might be corrupted memory.
Is there some way to verify this?
Is there any way to open it up and replace a physical component?
It has never been dropped or other mishaps.
It's been a very good tablet and I really miss it now.

Nexus 7
hi! have you tried to flash an AOSP stock image? i was having the same problem earlier, and I solved it by using nexus root toolkit to flash stock + unmount. I hope it helps!
Hi everyone.
After trying multiple custom ROMs for the Google Nexus 7 2012 (nakasi/grouper), I decided to flash the stock 4.1.0 factory image. However, as my Nexus 7 came with 4.1.2, I flashed everything in the 4.1.0 factory image, except for the boot.img, for which I used the 4.1.2 version. I used the bootloader included in the 4.1.0 factory image.
I then locked the bootloader, and booted Android. Everything was working fine, however after rebooting it, the Nexus 7 seemed to be hard-bricked. There were no visible signs of charging, and I couldn't access the bootloader, recovery or system. I was able to access APX mode, which my Windows 10 laptop recognized. Having hard-bricked a Nexus 7 years ago, I took precautions and used NvFlash to backup the proprietary files from my Nexus 7.
I've tried holding the power and volume buttons for several minutes, charging it overnight (with different chargers and via USB and AC), and even disconnecting the battery from the motherboard for a whole hour.
It was working ever since early September 2015, when I purchased it from TradeMe.
Can anyone tell me how to unbrick my Nexus 7? Help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, what's the point of backing up NvFlash files if there's no way to restore the bootloader?
Have you tried using the Nexus Rootkit? I had a similar issue with my Nexus (2012 version) and that cleared it up.

Do you mean the Nexus Root Toolkit? Yes, I'm very familiar with it, but unfortunately as I can only access APX mode, the NRT isn't much use.
Yes, Nexus root toolkit* my bad.
Cursed be yon ancient technology... You say you bricked a year ago?
Have you used CMD and ADB on your PC?

I bought my first Nexus 7 in January 2013 and accidentally bricked it in October 2013. Then, in September 2015 I bought another one. In February 2016, I used NvFlash to backup the proprietary files from the device, which can apparently be used to unbrick it via APX mode. However, I have no idea how to restore the bootloader.
ADB and Fastboot aren't supported in APX mode, as APX operates on an even lower level than the bootloader.

Indeed. This is the place to look I'd say. However, I have no idea how to restore it either. Sorry my friend.
Aye... Thats no good. What purpose does APX serve if it causes the device to be inaccessible? I'm not entirely familiar with APX..

Neither am I. Apparently restoring the bootloader is possible on an ASUS Transformer, but that device has a different partition location, so I'm guessing I'll need the right number for my Nexus 7.
Maybe I should call it quits. I mean, I have a Nexus 4 in poor condition, and a Nexus 7 2013 (and my bricked Nexus 7 2012, of course). I'm thinking of buying a Motorola Moto G 2014 once I've saved up enough.

Yeah... the easiest thing would be to just leave it be... I just bought mine for $30 on ebay. In perfect condition. Do some looking if you really have your heart set on having it.
And I'd say its worth saving the extra bit and going for the Moto X. The specs are much much higher and its still fairly affordable.
Thread closed. After some experimenting, I finally reflashed the bootloader!

I've made a guide on XDA about how to do it, but type "nvflash -r --download 4 x.IMG" replacing "x" with a bootloader from a factory image.
