Any suggestions on how to stop OTA updates - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Starting to get OTA system updates. Does anyone know how to stop receiving these updates? Is there a way to stop the request to install updates. I hope to be able to root this phone in the future

In the past if you had a custom recovery or build, you wouldn't even get them.

VRLG1 and rooting....

Have been waiting for this update hoping it would fix some of the bluetooth problems. However, losing Google Voice is pretty much a deal breaker for me, so I was planning on refusing the update long enough to see if others are able to root with the new update.
Does the new update come with a new system image? If so, how does the dev community get the image? Is it copied off a phone that has the image or does verizon release stock images for flashing.
Has anyone successfully root after receiving the update? If so, I assume this means running the new kernel with the previous route66 system image.
It looks like this person has http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29095607
It looks like we are allowed to downgrade firmware from VRALG1 to VRALF2 to get root using ODIN.

[Q] Can you get updates while your phone is rooted

Greetings all,
I just had my phone rooted. (Thanks to all the great minds) I do have a question in regards to getting the updates while rooted.
1. Will the updates cause me to lose my root?
2. Will the updates be available while my is rooted?
Again, thank you all for doing such a great job with the root for the Note 3.
Unik!
Good question

As far as I know yes unless you disable that feature in some way.
You can freeze "SDM 1.0" with Titanium Backup (or ROM Toolbox, etc) to prevent you from receiving OTA updates.
If you don't disable SDM and there is an update, it will still not install itself. It will download it to your phone but there will be a prompt to install. Its best to disable SDM, imo, so you don't have constant "install update?" prompts.

You will continue to receive OTA updates when rooted, but don not accept them! Usually an OTA update will break your root abilities.

Is there a way where I can turn off anything that will automatically update?

It will tell you that there is an update to download and install. Your phone will NOT automatically download and install the update, it is all user control. Even if you accidentally download it, you do not have to install it. Again, installing updates is all user controlled.
Freeze FWUpgrade.apk too. As that does the work for the update. Usually an update does system checks. So if you froze things it will fall then and there. Assuming you are stock 100 percent, just rooted! Usually the update via without a hitch and you lose super user (root) status. Would have to wait for devs to patch and release a new root method.
Ideally hoping we get a safe strap for our devices soon. So when an update comes a dev can strip out the updated files and make them into a flashable zip to use with safe strap. So you can just flash the needed files and not lose root. But no idea on any one making safe strap progress.

Can't edit post. Ugh. Should day "assuming you are stock 100 percent, just rooted, usually if you ran an update it would go without a hitch. Install fine. You just lose SU"

You won't know, and you won't be able to upgrade until it is determined you won't loose root or there is a secure root method.

[Q] Does rooting my Nexus causes OTA updates to fail?

Hi all,
I've been searching this forum (and the rest of the internet) for this question but there are not really similar answers.
I would like to root my nexus 4 just to be able to change the host file in the system folder. The rest if the phone I would like to remain stock (for now). But since android 4.4 is coming up I was wondering if it is still possible to receive the OTA update after performing this action.
Anyone knows an answer to this question?

edit: I am checking on something for you... you will receive OTA updates but checking to see if host file is one of the files it checks before it upgrades.
More than likely any changes to your system folder will cause it too fail

In my experience you still receive OTA updates, but you lose root while updating. I'm not sure if the hosts file is changed though.
If you're rooted and you've stock recovery then you'll be able to Upgrade but if you've rooted n installed 3rd party recovery then you'll receive update but it won't install. It will fail.

Are you sure about that? I've been running cwm recovery ever since 4.2.0. Every ota update was received and installed without issues, but I always simply lost root until a new method for the new android release appeared.
You can still receive OTA but I would suggest not accepting it and flash it manually using a "safe" method. The OTA update from 4.2 to 4.3 caused problems on rooted phones. Usually it is fine but 4.3 changed the file system which caused the problem, so better be safe than sorry.

Thank you all for your replies, this tells me again that it is quite difficult to say what happens. Since KitKat is probably coming to the Nexus 4 one of these days I will stay stock for now and decide later if I want to root my phone.
I used superSU Pro, and turned on "survival mode" when I did the OTA update to 4.3, and didn't have any problems losing root. Sometimes I'll get a message say I may have lost root access, but I've never had any problems with apps that require root.

on the last update.. I wasn't getting the OTA until I unrooted. I think you have to unlock the bootloader too.. then I immediately received the OTA. I didn't have stock recovery. I was glad that I didn't have to wipe everything.. I then re-rooted.. was good to go.

Converted to Dev Retail Note 4 Security Update

I have a converted to dev retail Note 4. Still running the stock rom and on oscar_kernel_v0.2. This evening I got notice of a security update from verizon. My feeling is not to take the update, but that's because I'm not sure. Is it safe to take the update or not?
Sent from my N910V converted to dev.
I would stay away. Verizon is evil and you will regret taking that update. If you have custom kernel then you must have custom recovery. With both those things being custom the update won't work anyway. Will probably get you in bootloop.

Google issues a monthly security update for Android. For Nexus devices, it's OK to take these updates.
For devices like ours that took a year and a half to root, I'd stay away no matter how much it nags.
Many custom ROMs disable such warnings.
Use Titanium to freeze sdm.apk and you will not get the OTA notification any longer

[Q] To install OTA or Freeze OTA?

So before we all get our phone here at XDA. Whats our thoughts. To install the latest OTA or to Block it?
I know in the past we usually blocked it to prevent patching against unlocked bootloaders etc.
Aso reading something about Bixby with the OTA?
Anyways just wondering everyones take on it before everyone starts getting their S8 in and OTAs.
Also if we do freeze ota. Which package are we freezing and whats the app of choice you think?
