[Q] To install OTA or Freeze OTA? - Samsung Galaxy S8 Questions and Answers

So before we all get our phone here at XDA. Whats our thoughts. To install the latest OTA or to Block it?
I know in the past we usually blocked it to prevent patching against unlocked bootloaders etc.
Aso reading something about Bixby with the OTA?
Anyways just wondering everyones take on it before everyone starts getting their S8 in and OTAs.
Also if we do freeze ota. Which package are we freezing and whats the app of choice you think?

Adverse effects of rooting?

I'm new to android and was wonder what adverse effects are caused by rooting the device. I know it voids the warrenty but does it effect anything else.
I read that it stops you from downloading paid apps from the market, is that true?
Thanks
Other than the warranty issue, there are no adverse effects of rooting. If you are rooted you can run any number of custom roms available, some of which are nearly identical to the stock. You can also use software that requires root access.
Paid apps are available from the market. One of the early posts in the dev area stated that paid apps did not work but that individual did not have their SIM card in.
Thanks for clearing that up.
But if Google comes with an update, you won't be able to get it??
Or am I wrong?
Depends on if its ota or download, but generally with root you will get updates before theyre official or published.
^ is right. Keep on this site, and if there are updates you will probably have it a month or so before it goes out OTA (if that is how updates will be sent for N1).
Another reason it could be an issue now, we do not know YET how to reverse it. With the G1 we can go back to stock and send it to HTC if there was an issue.... until we figure that out, you are stuck with the rooted phone b/c HTC will not be obligated to assist.
But that's only if I choose to install custom roms right?
If I only root it for getting full acces on the stock rom, then i won't get the pushed update?
And then I have to use costum roms for getting the update?
Please correct me if I'm wrong
If everything goes like it did for the G1/Dream, then yes, you are correct.

[q] firmware udates on rooted stock roms?

I know you can update you PRL & PROFILE. But is it ok to update firmware on a stock rom that is rooted?
Depends. Usually, you'll lose root if you do so. That was the case with the MDL firmware, for example. I'd just come over here when you start to get update messages and see what folks have to say that have installed it. If you want to keep root, you'll have to wait for some friendly dev to come up with a version that gives you the update w/o loosing root. Doesn't seem to take long at all for that happen on the Samsung Galaxy line.

Yes, MDL is the latest and greatest.

[Q] Rooted but Stock

Hi Everyone,
I have the G2, and wanted to get rid of annoying ads. So I rooted(that's it, stock, no recovery). I only rooted it. Everything is still stock. The only thing I added was superuser and busybox. I didn't install a recovery like Twrp or cm. I hate ads, that is the only reason I rooted. I didn't delete any bloatware, only froze with Titanium. Essentially everything is factory, except it is rooted.
Question: Will I be able to take the lollipop OTA?
If so, Will I lose root?
If I cant receive OTA, what do I need to do to receive ota update?
Thanks a bunch

Probably
Probably not
Flash stock .kdz
Well we are not likely to see a LP update in the near future, so no worries. As long as you haven't touched any system apps or installed custom recovery you will most likely be fine taking any OTA.
I think that OTA updates aint posible on some devices, like example mine which is 20b. I can only update via pc and lg update tool, but im kinda scared i wont brick my phone since i rooted it on stock 20b with towelroot.
Should i do the update? Can sh*t happen? I am looking over the forums atm, but wanted to ask.
Also im searching for a recovery install way on d802 with rooted 20b stock firmware.

If you are Stock you can still take the OTA if/when it comes out. Root has never been an issue upgrading with an OTA.
What makes the process fail is what you do with root, like changing DPI, changing the WiFi Tether App, physically deleting bloat (verse disabling it).
I'm not sure if you can root Lollipop yet. I've heard they are disabling the ability to root lollipop without a custom kernel.

Thanks,
I did few changes with xposed and g2 tweakbox, you think that could cause problems for the update?
I think i should really update 20b stock..

I wouldn't risk it, I've read a lot about people bricking their phone because they thought they could just uninstall xposed, uproot and update

[Q] 4.4.2 Wants to update

So it's that time again, Verizon wants me to update and I don't wana! It's been annoying me over and over, and I can't get rid of it. I thought about going to cyanogenmod, well that doesn't look like it's possible from 4.4.2 from what I've read and through all of my failed attempts. Now my recovery is busted, but hey the phone still turns on. Any ideas how to get this to stop bugging me ?I've rooted via Towelroot and am considering a ROM if anyone knows of a good one I would take it into consideration, thanks!
Or since you have root, you can just freeze "SDM 1.0" with titanium backup pro to stop OTA nagging.
Not a bad idea, would need to purchase pro though, guess we will find out if $6 is worth avoiding the nagging . I suppose it's safe to assume to not follow through with the update then as well.

Its worth it. Tbu is great. And besides theres no way of rooting yet if you do update. Best thing I can think of is freeze SDM and wait for the devs to make a version of 4.4.4 thats safestrap compatable. There are other ways to stop the update but TBU has always been the easiest for me on alot of devices.

I just posted this method and need testers: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=58229341&postcount=27

What would happen?

I am currently rooted with MM on my S7-Edge, SM-G935A and yesterday I got the notification from AT&T that it wanted to update my phone to the newest version of Android, Version 7 (Nougat).
I thought about UN-Rooting my phone and let the OTA finish the process and complete the upgrade. But after looking around there isn't a stable version for Root on Nougat yet for the AT&T Phone, so I think I going to wait.
But my question is if I just let OTA update the phone without Un-Rooting it, what would happen to the phone. Would it just become Un-Rooted and be an Updated Android 7.0? Or would there be problems? I can say for sure that I would not do this as I like having Root Access and I don't think I would like living without Root. But I was just curious what would really happen?
I only have one phone and don't want to mess it up, but there are a lot of people on these forums that experiment with phones all the time.
Anyway, just a question for all of you in the know.
Judging from what happened with a minor update on my at the time rooted s6e, it'll just error out before anything is done due to the engboot not being what it expects.
It checks the hashes of that file and a lot of others before applying the update from what I can tell

Thanks for the reply. That is what I expected. I am not going to try this but like I said just curious. And you answered my question.
Again thanks.
Yup it wouldn't update.
