I just had my phone rooted. (Thanks to all the great minds) I do have a question in regards to getting the updates while rooted.
1. Will the updates cause me to lose my root?
2. Will the updates be available while my is rooted?
Again, thank you all for doing such a great job with the root for the Note 3.

As far as I know yes unless you disable that feature in some way.
You can freeze "SDM 1.0" with Titanium Backup (or ROM Toolbox, etc) to prevent you from receiving OTA updates.
If you don't disable SDM and there is an update, it will still not install itself. It will download it to your phone but there will be a prompt to install. Its best to disable SDM, imo, so you don't have constant "install update?" prompts.

You will continue to receive OTA updates when rooted, but don not accept them! Usually an OTA update will break your root abilities.

It will tell you that there is an update to download and install. Your phone will NOT automatically download and install the update, it is all user control. Even if you accidentally download it, you do not have to install it. Again, installing updates is all user controlled.
Freeze FWUpgrade.apk too. As that does the work for the update. Usually an update does system checks. So if you froze things it will fall then and there. Assuming you are stock 100 percent, just rooted! Usually the update via without a hitch and you lose super user (root) status. Would have to wait for devs to patch and release a new root method.
Ideally hoping we get a safe strap for our devices soon. So when an update comes a dev can strip out the updated files and make them into a flashable zip to use with safe strap. So you can just flash the needed files and not lose root. But no idea on any one making safe strap progress.

You won't know, and you won't be able to upgrade until it is determined you won't loose root or there is a secure root method.

I believe we might be getting updates on the phone in middle December spoke to a tech from Verizon....

Just for your info. When I woke up today I found that my Note N5110 has downloaded a new firmware update ans is asking for install. The firmware is 164.63 Mb. Of course I didn't installed because my tablet is rooted with civato custom kernel. Just be careful!
Mine is not rooted and still running original ROM. update was already downlaoded and just needed reboot and 5 minutes later back up !
Only info was that it had better stability..
Mine is rooted with custom recovery twrp installed, exposed framework, tweakbox, app options, and a few apps set up at 160dpi. When checking for an update the device tells me that my device has been modified and updates are not available. So I guess I have nothing to worry about
The pronlem is that when I try to check for software updates the device do not find anything but after a while in the notification bar appears even though I restart the tablet. My fear is to loose root after install the update.

Just pulled this update now. Assuming its not 4.2.2? I saw 164MB and thought . . . maybe.
Shouldn't be too long though, didn't they claim 4.2.2 for a few other devices in June-July? :fingers-crossed:

Unrooting the old version works perfectly. But you will not be able to root with Framaroot after you did the update...

FYI it may refuse to update because "device is modified" when it is unmodified. Fix is simple... Shutdown, remove sdcard, boot up and update. Replace sdcard later and all is good.
This is for those that are being mistakenly notified that their system is modified. I hope this saves someone some time.
I can confirm that CF-Root works with the new firmware. Just to play I downloaded the new firmware (MF1) and installed via Kies then applied CF-Root with Odin and my Note 8.0 is now rooted with the last software update version.
for us non-rooted folks, does anyone know what the update does. All it said was "stability improvements"

This didn't help on a friend's. His was rooted the exact same as mine. We tried unrooting, voodoo, factory reset, with and without sd... nothing works. Keeps saying it can't update because the device is modified. Anyone have any ideas? It was rooted with framaroot... no idea what else to do.

Use KIES on PC. Connect the tablet and see if the update is available, if so update it with KIES.
I'm still on the stock ROM. I've heard rumors of VZW putting out updates to help with battery etc. I have the SDM file frozen so it won't auto OTA and lock the phone up. But I also don't want to miss out on solid improvements.
Suggestions?

Whole threads covering people who were rooted already downloading the most current firmware updates (two of them for Verizon landed via Kies in last couple of days) and then going back in after the updates and re-rooting their N3's. The current firmware updates keep SELinux at Permissive.

So are they "unrooting" to do this? Sorry, I'm a bit of a newb. I'm used to running custom ROM's and not dealing with VZW whatsoever when it comes to updates.
Any idea on how to unroot the N3 and prompt for an update?

I'm getting an update request to update my firmware. But before I go ahead and do that, I want to make sure updating won't make it harder for me to root and use custom roms in the future.
Is there a way to turn of the reminders? I'm getting daily reminders to update....

I don't think there's a way to do it if you're stock. If it's the MJ7 update, you can still have root and install SafeStrap. I would go ahead and root now.

Thanks for the response. I'm waiting for confirmation that the 1 click root methods aren't malware. I'm also hesitant to root at the moment, since I already have so much data on my phone, and don't want to loose it after the root. I realize by putting it off, I'm just making it worse for myself.
In the mean time, I was hoping I could just disable that notification. It's so annoying! Arghh, I hate Touchwiz sometimes.

There is no way at this time and probably never will be because jcase is not going to try to find a way.
What did you do that you lost root? Others are reporting that they kept root when they updated.
I was stupid and restored 4.4 without checking if I still had root. Had to restore because I uninstalled some bliatware and the update wouldn't take. So I'm stranded without root forever?

OK, just so I understand, you did a factory reset to restore to 4.4 and then were unrooted and took the 4.4.2 OTA?
As for forever, well, who knows maybe Jcase can be persuaded to work on it, but he still has to find a way even if he were so inclined. As of now, once you upgrade to the 4.4.2 bootloader, no one has a way to downgrade it to 4.4. And since Slap My Moto relies on downgrading 4.4. to the post camera 4.2.2, there is no way to root 4.4.2 with a locked bootloader.
The sale on the Dev Eds is still on until tomorrow. You can always get root with a Dev Ed. You could sell your current phone to help pay for the Dev Ed.

if you sbf back to 4.4 then go back to 4.2.2 and do the root thing over and just update like normal. thats if you can still sbf to 4.2.2

He upgraded to 4.4.2. If he tries to sbf back to 4.4 he will brick his phone.

All those that I have seen report keeping root later said that they lost R/W access, which makes having root useless.

Xposed with all its modules including Moto tether + TiBu is useless? I'm using adfree and it seems to work as well. All you have to do is soft reboot and viola!

It worked for me. The only setback from 4.4 root is that if you hard reboot you'll need to install Xposed framework and soft reboot to get it to stick. So worst case is you have to reboot twice if you do a hard reboot. TiBu works regardless.
If you worried about the warranty then you shouldn't root the non dev edition.

Not sure, they're not usually specific from what I've seen. I just recall reading "I got lucky, root stuck!" followed later by "ah crap, write protection is enabled".

This would, I think, be the ideal solution.
I am currently on system version 9.30.1 and I am rooted. My boot loader isn't unlocked and I don't have a custom recovery installed. I am wondering if being rooted will cause issues once the 4.4 update is released. And if so how do I remove root?

Well, since you are rooted, chances are you have probably removed some of the bloat that was installed on your phone by your provider. If this is so, you won't even be able to update to 4.4 unless you first return your phone completely to stock, ie add all the bloat back in. If your phone is not stock, you can remove updater.apk and you won't even be prompted for the update.
If you are completely stock and rooted, when you accept the update to 4.4, once the upgrade completes, you simply will not be rooted anymore. This is true whether you have a locked or an unlocked bootloader. With the unlocked bootloader and a custom recovery, it may be possible to have root if the one in the recovery works with 4.4 Otherwise, we will all have to wait until if/when root becomes available for Android 4.4 and our phone. This is why it is often recommended that you wait to update until the devs have a chance to tear the update apart and look for usable exploits.
Some what on the same topic... I made a back up after unlocking before doing anything... Could I restore said back up flash stock recovery voodoo my root and ota... Or would I still have to rsd then ota?

Yes, you can flash your backup and then take the OTA, but you don't need voodoo if you're unlocked. Re-flash recovery and then flash root.

Thanks, I am rooted and didnt touch any of the bloatware. I bought the phone in an non-unlockable state, 9.30.1, so I just want some form of kit-kat on this. In an un-xda like fashion im probably going to just take the update ASAP.

Take a look in the S5 and X forums to get the proof you need about KK being hard to root.
AK, I would seriously wait until the devs get hold of the update. Let the devs take the OTA and pull it apart so they can start providing ROMs for SafeStrap. Then, update to KK via SS.
My plan is to go all stock and accept the update IF it ever actually gets released. As my bootloader is unlocked, I always have the option of reflashing recovery on it, make a backup of 4.4, and then run it or some other rom backup as I choose. Also, I'm curious to know, if there is supposed to be superuser built into TWRP, will that allow 4.4 to be rooted anyway, or not?
As you can see, I know just enough to be dangerous, lol, but as long as I can make calls, it's all good.

As long as your bootloader is unlocked, all you need to do after you update to the OTA is re-flash recovery and then superuser to regain root.

I don't think there is an "if" in it. The executive posted on google+ about receiving the update in the next couple weeks.

Well its been a few weeks since he said that. Having had a similar situation with Sony and the Xperia Play and ICS, I can tell you the average executive's word isn't worth spit. And then there's the whole Verizon involvement which always adds another level of delay. I'm hoping I'm wrong, but I would be surprised if we get KK in a few Months, never mind weeks.

Sorry if it seems like it im not trying to fight you here but he commented on his google+ post saying Razr M and HD KitKat is already at Verizon labs. So im guessing about a month.
I look forward to being wrong. I really hope we get it in the next few months. I've noticed that each revision of Android has made the need to develop custom ROMs less necessary for many phones. Of course that won't lessen our desire or enthusiasm to push the envelope. But when I think how far we have come from my first Android, the LG Ally and Eclair... There was a phone that was crap stock, but once unlocked and customized, it was a very decent phone for its time and price point. Today, its harder to see the need or difference between stock and custom ROMs, other than removal of bloat and occasionally some new bell or whistle. Still, I can't seem to resist their siren's call any more than the rest of you. Which is why I'm running CM11. Lol!
