Android + Existing Phones = ??

Yeah, Google has just announced that Android is a platform there is no real GPhone. ok. I'm sure a lot of us are more than interested in getting this platform on our existing phone.
My question to those who understand the internals of our existing HTC phones. Is there hope for us to scrap WinMo and put Android instead. Their website makes it sound like it can be done.
What do you think?

I don't know the answer to that, but it sure seems like it, e specially since Sprint and other carriers are also joining hte Open handset alliance, they may provide support for linking Android with their services and configuration. I can't wait.

Wasn't there a pooled $$ reward that someone set up for the first person who could get Win XP running on the new Intel macs (prior to bootcamp). I suggest a similar motivational scheme (if necessary) to compensate whoever can accomplish a similar feat: getting Android to run on existing HTC hardware.

I would love to start a pool too! The only problem is there are too many devices to support. With getting XP to run on an Intel mac, they all run the same hardware. My Athena is a lot different then somebodies universal or wizard. I'm guessing it will be just like the efforts to port linux over to our handsets. I'm hoping for my device to be able to run it but it would be a huge effort to be able to support all the devices.

It may not be that hard (theoretically) because they (OHA) did all the ground work of getting linux to run on our devices. The work (I think) is in dealing with the customizations for each device. The min requirements they stated seem well below what most of our devices are capable of, so that shouldn't be a problem either. Maybe we'll just have to wait until a device from HTC with that ROM comes out.

HTC and Google are working together to release a new phone that will run on the Android platform. The phone will reportedly have a 3- by 5-inch swivel screen like the SideKick that will automatically rotate from portrait to landscape. It will have a full QWERTY keyboard as well, but the coolest part about the phone is the "time-sensitive" touch menus that will expand depending on how long the users touch the screen.
According to Engadget Mobile, this should show up sometime in the second half of 2008.

to use Blueangel as a linux phone two years ago without any help from HTC

It is possible, but as far as I know it, it didn't work quite well... Maybe we shall have better support when Android comes out.

It was still not bad, when you consider that the code
is actually written without any docs from manufacturer
by 1 person (cp15).

Think of this though, we're struggling at the moment dealing with stability and functionality issues with WinMo on our devices made for that platform. How much more with a totally alien OS coded by a single individual. In as much as I think it was a great achievement, I do not think it was a workable substitute for WinMo. This however presents a huge posibility ..... my .02.

So for compatibility I prefer Windows Phone 7.
A Windows will be FULLY compatible a Windows Mobile
After all they are brothers.....

thats the most intresting part... multiple choice is also more detailed in the end...
it's also obvious that in a android dev thread most votes go to android...

if we (da_g to be specific) are able to open up wp7 for unsigned apps etc. it will be a intresting os.
otherwise it's simply too locked down for my taste.
i would love to see android running on this device..

would love to see android on the HD2, went to the HD2 from a Hero and miss the choice of apps on the market.

Well... WinMo 6.5.x isn't so bad, but I feel it a little 'patched'. It's like a car with lots and lots of customizations... but the chassis and motor remains the same. And the closed nature of the SO prevents remodelling these parts.
Anyway, it's not a bad choice, after all.
WP7 is a no-no for me. Just some snippets:

First off, thank you HD2Owner for all of your intresting posts for XDA.
except the WP7 picture, all you have showed as the OS picture is the Sense picture. You should have showed the actual OS home page like WP7( not the second party application, the look becomes appealing in judgment).
On the other hand I would like to play with Android and so as WP7 no matter how restricted they might be but since I have not had an experience with either of them I would love to have them before judgment.
You should have added WinMo 6.1 as there are people still in love with it(developers as well)
I like the regular 6.5 more that 6.5X because it looks simpler but then I am using the Chucky ROM 6.5X and that is simple but problem is that when you theme the ROM you have to theme everything but in lots of time the Devs have not the time to do so. As far as the function 6.5X is better than the rest of them but we are all human and do like change much.
Love to see both Ando and WP7 on HD2 Dual boot or Triple would be awesome.

I want to see Android OS running on HD2. Is definitely BETTER OS and is developing all the time,also it doesnt need the hardware requiments that WP7 need to run

This poll is skewed.
You have Windows Mobile versions separated yet only one Android version when there are several as well. 6.x should be just one category.

I prefer to have WinMo 6.5.x as my full-time OS, but I definitely want android to boot into when I want to. Luckily, that's how it will be when android gets working on it.
I almost voted for android because that's what I'm most interested in there being more development in, but then I though about it and voted WinMo because that's what I'll still use most of the time. I'm wondering if some of the people who voted for android did so because they knew that WinMo would still be there on the phone and would still use it a lot of the time, or if they would really want android if it got rid of winmo all together. Would everyone who voted android still want just android even if it didn't function fully like most android ports? (ie... didn't use camera, bluetooth, etc... if it didn't make use of all the hardware properly?)

Wow, that many people prefer 2 operating systems for the HD2 that don't even run on the HD2. I think the cooked roms for the HD2 are fantastic, especially with 6.5.5. Yes, I'll play with android if and when it is available for the HD2. In the meantime I am stoked to have fantastic hardware with an open OS than I can always tweak and modify to my liking.

The iphone is one cheap silicone case away from being very very good hardware. Just buy an iphone (and a cheap case) if you want ios.

What is it about iOS4 that you can't get on the EVO/Android? My brother has the iPhone4, & there is nothing he has that i couldn't find in the Marketplace.
If you're looking for something specific, i'm sure you can find an Android version of it.

Come on guys, it's a legit question (even if it might seem pretty blasphemous to us). As for the original question, if you want to dual boot, there's potential to put any Open Source OS on just about any hardware. If you want to have a closed source OS (like iOS, WinMo, WebOS, Blackberry OS [oh dear God WHY?!], Mac OSX Leopard, etc...) on your hardware, you'll pretty much have that pre-installed on the device. That's why you can put Android onto the HTC HD2, but you can't put WinMo 6.5 on the EVO 4G.
Bottom line, if you want iOS4 + Android, you'll have to buy an iPhone if you even want a chance. I don't think they have it working yet, but I know they've ported Froyo to the older hardware, so it might just be a matter of time.

Forum reeks of fanboyism. Simple question required a simple answer. The evo is far from a perfect phone... If that was the case.. I wouldn't have to root it and play tricks on my battery just to make it last longer than 5 hours. Android wouldn't be where it is today if it wasn't how iOS changed the way we look at smart phones. And apps that aren't on the android? bejeweled 2, angry birds, words with friends, a half decent facebook app, espn score center is terrible on the droid as well... I could go on... Both phones have their flaws.but I can see why the interest in wanting a dual boot phone. more than likely not happening anytime soon if not at all.

right, out of the 85k apps in the market place, absolutely none of them are good for anybody whatsoever, which explains why no one downloads anything from the market anymore, and also explains why android is definitely not catching up to iOS.

You know, you don't have to be an Apple fanboy (or girl) to want to see if this can be done. It's like trying to solve a puzzle. I really wouldn't want an iphone, but hacking iOS4 onto an Android phone would be fun. And, there are some apps for the iphone that don't exist in the Android Market.
BTW, I have a Dell Mini 9 that runs Snow Leopard just fine. Am I in love with Apple? Not really, though I have an iMac, as well as Windoze boxes and Linux, too. I'm posting from Linux on my dual boot Aspire One, wirelessly tethered to my Evo. I think I'm gonna try the Ubuntu hack for my Evo next. It's all about choices.

First offerings are typically missing things found on more robust devices. Think of the original iPhone--no native apps, MMS, GPS, copy/paste, multitasking, camera, 3G, etc. or the G1 or whatever.
Both iOS and Android started out on devices that were missing a lot of common features but now they are top of the line. I'm more interested in how WP7 looks in a year or two.

I think times have changed. WP7 has to be fully featured now. Smartphones are here, they are mainstream, and they are big business.
Turns out this information might not be correct just yet, here's what I found:
Here's what one can read on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 portal:
“Some Windows Phones have a Secure Digital (SD) card that's used to expand the amount of storage space on the phone. If your phone has one, it's in an SD card slot underneath the battery cover on the back of your phone.
Windows Phone uses a special high–performance SD card that works differently than SD cards in other devices. When your phone is built and first set up, its internal storage and SD card are combined and recognized as one storage system.

It kind of sounds like they just want to keep people from jailbreaking/flashing/rooting their phones, but maybe it's what they say.

Windows Phone 7 has both good and bad, but to be honest, I like it a whole lot better in it's first release than I did with Android when it was first released.
One thing I like a lot, which I know a lot will disagree with, is (some of) the hardware standards. All WP7 phones, as far as I can tell, run the same old generation Snapdragon in the EVO (and even further back to 2009, the HD2). Yet the games and UI look great and run smooth. Having a standard level of specs means that it is easier to build a OS that will run as intended on all devices. With Android it's hit or miss; get a entry level Android phone and things will draaaaggg, get a high end phone without the latest and greatest CPU/GPU (EVO) and things will still not be 100% smooth. Google just can't optimize the experience for all these devices like Microsoft can -- and don't forget as a licensed OS, dev support comes attached.
The SD card thing is CERTAINLY LAME, I mean, what does that achieve? But the benefits to me are clear: WP7 will run smooth across the board; and with similar hardware and Microsoft support, updates will probably come A WHOLE LOT FASTER than what we get on Android.
I personally want to give WP7 a try, it's still missing a couple of important features (multi-tasking for third party media being the key thing). But the Office + Zune + Xbox Live integration looks better than anything comparable on Android, and as a designer who like smart minimalism, the Metro UI is perfect.
...and did you see the Touch Pro 7 coming to Sprint? That's the phone I was waiting for.

Hmm.. Perhaps. Windows Mobile did almost everything Android does, only in a less intuitive/attractive way. Windows Phone 7 is an entirely different beast, and although the core is similar/upgraded, the UI/UX is entirely new. But still, there's no doubt that I'm interested.

I'm not denying that it looks promising. I just was commenting that it's not the first entry into the mobile market. There has been a lot of trial and error to get there, just like every OS.

windows phone 7 Os on SGS2

There are rumours floating around that Samsung is in the process of putting wp7 on SGS2 ( maybe a variant of it)
So was wondering if they did bring out one would it be possible to port wp7 onto out SGS2 sinse it would be the same hardware.
I would like to dual boot if possible( like the HTC HD2 ).. what do you guys think ?

I've tried WP7 on both native and non-native devices and believe me, it works better on native devices, just like Android does.
Besides, it's fugly and too new to be even considered as an alternative to Android. Also, if it's a non-native device then you could have issues with registering it to its full capabilities.
And finally, I don't believe a word of that article. Sounds to me like someone's come out from under a bridge, looking for snacks.

I kinda like WP7 as I have HTC HD7 and I just love the facebook , twitter and email on my HD7, I still think android is not that good for emails
The only reason I love android more is cause of the apps, and googlemaps and the great old flash junkie in me which make me want android.
But yeah If some DEV does port it, it would be great ......
Oh I might be a happy bunny once I install mango as it seems to iron out some of the few problems currently WP7 user's have

Since I tried out Launcher 7 as my launcher and UberMusic as my music player, I've been very interested in having a proper WindowsPhone. If the clones are this good, how good should the original OS be?
It's looking very likely that I will be owning a WP7 device, if they open up the system. If I have to jailbreak to get basic things done like on iPhone, it's not even an option.

I actually have a HTC HD7 and windows phone 7 is really good but cause its new is still few things to iron out and not much apps.
I will actually go for Nokia windows phone 7 are out as Nokia does the best hardware and I kinda love WP7 as well

WP7 is actually pretty good. Stop being an Android fanboy.

It would be real treasure if Samsung gave us option to change our OS to Android or WP7 anytime we like...

This is basically the GS2 with WP7, minus the dual core processor.
Samsung Focus S - Pretty nice looking phone, probably one of the best of the new Mango phones.
