Surprised not to see this posted here. It's for the s7 but people on reddit have confirmed that it works on the s6. I would try it but you need to be running MM, seems it changes the dpi to 540, or around that can't remember the exact number. This is native so Ui and everything should scale properly compared to doing to in adb.

Why would you need to downscale the resolution of your OS? i dont see any logic in it, or do you mean Text Size and Icon Size?

Ah i see so you guys are talking about resizing the icons and text of the OS, if you guys wanted to lower resolution for gaming Samsung Galaxy S6 has a samsung app called Game Tuner which works like an nvidia or amd control panel which lets you configure color quality per game, screen brightness per game and most importantly resolution per game.

Ic, well i just tought you guys wanted it for the games, there are many times when you want to play high end gfx games on your android but the fps are killed by the overkill screen resolution, thats why android has some apps that reduces the DPI of the entire OS, but Game Tuner is much better than that, it only affects the game you want.
Anyways sorry for going off topic, just tried to help
This is simply superb trick. Working perfectly on 920F dual sim.

Correct me if im wrong but resolution is different than dpi right?
Suppose you have a 4k resolution and 620 dpi, you changed from 620 dpi to 540 dpi you still have 4k resolution, no? It's just that in 540 dpi you can view more content but still have the same resolution.
Feel free to correct me.
Simply put, DPI = scaling and has nothing to do with res.
This changed the dpi on my S6 to 560 after reboot. Then I issued 'adb wm density 540' which changed the dpi to 540 on the fly.
The easiest way to control ur dpi scalling here it is
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.evozi.displayscaling
How about the phone app and camera app, is it also condensed?
Indeed works perfectly fine on G920F. @Tricks25 yes, phone/camera are also condensed
Works with apps "more shortcuts" and G920I. 2 modes (standard/condensed) to select when launch the "DisplayScalingActivity" shortcut.

Hi again,
i have problem, my hp pavilion dv5 have 1280x800 screen and i cannot split screen in windows 8 like on screenshot. I know i must have min.1366x768 screen but maybe there is option to unlock this option in lower resolution.
Possible I guess. By using the resolution hack, I think you may achieve split screen. It's using the netbook screen res method, you hack the registry to show more screen resolution options. Gives you more, but it looks cramped, blurry, with uneven pixel density. That's putting more pixels than the actual screen may support. Another method you can use is plugging an external display that supports 1366x768 and up. This will definitely allow you to have that split screen.

res registry hack doesn't work anymore. Haven't found a way to do this yet.
Okay, solved. If you have nVidia you can add other resolution via nVidia Control Panel. Now I can split on my 1280x800 screen with resolution 1366x856
ATI Radion HD?
Hi all
I have the same native resolution as the OP but my laptop has an ATI Radion HD graphics card.
Does anybody know how to add an additional resolution with this type of card?
Thanks and God bless
andrew-in-woking
Check ATI software, maybe there is option to add the "adjusted resolution".
I checked it in nVidia software and Intel also ( HD 3000 ), and i can add other resolution ( higher than native ).
Regards
I use an nVidia based Graphics Card and this is how I change my resolution, in case anyone wanted to try it out! And yes, snapping works perfectly after this but your monitor might not display it all very clearly.
I have a Dell monitor as you can see in the screenshot running on a native resolution of 1280x1024, just like the OP's! \

What I have observed from using Split Screen is that, each app has a minimum running width of 1024px wide, anything lower and it will look cropped and uneven. So even if somehow the people at XDA bypass that option and allow snapping at lower resolutions, it will still look bad.
It's not such a great feature either, you keep getting confused on what's running and hard to concentrate on one app when there are two taking up the screen. Multitasking was made for the desktop version and it should stay that way in my opinion
Spent the best part of two days trying to fix this i guess... I swear to god if I hadn't figured this out, the phone was being returned!
YMMV, caveat emptor etc.
1) Enable 'Disable HW Overlays' in Developer Settings - won't work without this! Edit: Resets after boot! Anyone know how to automate this?
2) Download Nomone - Resolution Changer from the Play Store
3) I swear to god - change resolution to 1441 x 2561 (edit: changing dpi breaks stock LG apps)
4) Reboot phone - fix should already work but this fixes layout for DPI change.
This doesn't negate the effect entirely but it looks like its 95% gone. Other resolution variants work too but this one has the greatest effect of all the ones I tried.
Picture for proof - sorry for potato quality, my only other camera was an iPad - maybe the difference is less noticable zoomed in, but compare the 'mited' bit to see the biggest difference.

LG use post-processing to artificially enhance the sharpness of the screen - not sure if it varies by model or its an eyesight thing, but some seem to loathe it while others don't even notice it. See this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/lg-g3/general/figure-how-to-remove-sharpening-t2807761
Compare the 'm i t' bit of that picture i linked - top (default) one has a very strong white outline, while it's barely/not there in the bottom one.

There's an easy fix for that. The fault is imbalance of the colors/contrast.
The fix is definitely to modify contrast and such either from settings>accessibility>color adjustment or by using trickstermod.

It disappeared for me after I changed launchers and dpi (maybe just got used to it) but I definitely noticed it when I first got the phone. Irritated me a lot, put awkward strain of my eyes :/
I got tired of messing around with DPI/Resolution combinations by typing the adb commands every time. So I wrote a nice little batch file that should work for any phone running 4.3 or greater. It doesn't require installation of the android SDK or even ADB - all files necessary are contained in the 7z file. Just run the file and follow the prompts - everything is taken care of for you, including finding the default values for your device in case you mess things up. The program also fetches your current DPI and resolution so you don't have to go digging for it in build.prop or dumpsys to see where you are presently.
Download here goo.gl/YTsHQp
I used to run unrooted on my Verizon GN4 N910V. A resolution at 1080x1920 with 360 DPI forces *some* apps to run in tablet mode, and gives a very large increase in screen real estate. I can live with the small dialer problems (can't be fixed without rooting/xposed as far as I know) and change my launcher, in exchange for a cooler running phone (average 7 degrees cooler under benchmark load) that uses slightly less power (average +27 minutes per charge according to Gsam), scores an increase of 16% in AnTuTu (52077 at 1080p and 45085 at 1440p), and has WAY more screen real estate. I don't notice the difference in resolution at all, even if I'm trying to.
Note that turning animation scale to a value greater than zero may be required for running some launchers nicely while screen scaling is turned on.
The included HOWTO file gives instructions and outlines some acceptable whole number 9:16 ratios and DPI settings for stock DPI ratios - and outlines how to calculate the numbers yourself. Open source on the code, modify, redistribute, etc - just give attribution to zediiiii.
I'm not sure i understand how this improves performance when you are scaling down the objects on the screen.

You can't without root.
This program works well. I have noticed some issues when running at 1080p using the DPI provided in the readme. Certain things (boots screen, movies in games) won't play because, I'm assuming, it is relying on the build.prop but the resolution defined in that file is not accurate. It's a minor inconvenience in light of the fact that running at 1080p and with a heavy deploy it getting me nearly 7 hours sot on lollipop.
Nice job @zediiiii.
I tried it on a Galaxy S4 with KitKat and a Galaxy Note 4 with Lolipop. On both devices I just tried to lower the resolution while keeping the stock DPI to resolution ratio, the goal being to save some battery. On the GS4 it definitely reduced heat while playing games and increased the Antutu score. Unfortunately it also broke the stock keyboard and camera. I didn't see any problems with 3rd party apps. On the Note 4 I didn't test as much, but the stock keyboard was also broken.

My understanding is that driving less pixels per square inch (PPI - I incorrectly used DPI in my program...) means less bandwidth through the graphics processor and thus more headroom. So you either slightly increase performance or slightly save on power - depending on how you use your phone.
I use it for the slight power save, because I can't tell the difference between 500 PPI and 300 PPI, and so I can trick apps into thinking I'm using a tablet on my GN4.

When you say broke the stock keyboard, you mean that it's scaled incorrectly and far too big on your screen? How did the other stock apps fair? In my experience, if you stick with the correct resolution to PPI (DPI is the wrong acronym; I was kindly corrected by a fellow programmer) ratio, the stock apps continue to work as expected. Stock apps crash for me when the ratio is lower than it was before, and simply get smaller on the screen when the ratio is higher than before. If stock apps are crashing, you could try incrementally raising or lowering your DPI and checking for results. I made the program so that this was easy to do incrementally for this very reason.

Yes, exactly, sorry I wasn't more clear. On the GS4 i tried multiple resolution and DPI combos, always keeping the stock ratio. The stock keyboard didn't scale properly with anything other than the default settings. On the Note 4 I only tested with 1080x1920 and 480 dpi, and saw the same scaling issue with the stock keyboard. This is not the fault of the script, so it's not a complaint. It's just a note to warn others that if you want to tweak these settings on a Samsung phone, then you may need to use a 3rd party keyboard.
On the GS4, some of the control buttons were missing in the stock camera app, but the Note 4 didn't have that issue. I didn't see any crashing on either device, perhaps because I was always keeping the stock ratio.
Thanks for the good information. My guess is that anything touched by Samsung, eg, the dialer, the home screen, the camera etc will not scale correctly and may be buggy even with the sam PPI:RES ratio. Oh how I miss Xposed (which I think @locolbd knows is the best way to change ppi per app if you have root, among other things)... Not hopeful for a real root solution for VZW GN4 at this point.
not sure if i'm going blind where where is the script located or was it taken out?

If so, you can change it to

Because I mentioned my lack of hope for root on the N910V earlier - if anyone hasn't noticed, there is a great guide for permanent root (start here, it links everything for 6.0.1 upgrade) on the N910V Verizon Galaxy Note 4. I'm running 6.0.1 on Jasmine Rom 7 with all the rooted trimmings and no serious issues to date.
Recently lost my Nexus 7 (2013) and am looking for a replacement -- the best candidates seem to be the Asus ZenPad 3S 10 and the Huawei Mediapad M3. I'm leaning towards the ZenPad 3S 10, mostly because all the reviews for the Huawei mention great benchmarks but mediocre real-life performance -- and also that the interface is an unabashed iPad clone (really, no app drawer? What the eff!). But those reviews are from last year, and Nougat has since been released on the Mediapad M3. So has real life performance caught up with the potential of the processor? And is the EMUI 5.0 interface much improved? If I install the Google Now launcher, how close can I get to the vanilla experience? There's just not many accounts of the post-ANdroid 7 experience, so do tell!
Thanks in advance for any comments and advice.
App Drawer was introduced with EMUI 5 and is optional. You can switch between the standard startscreen style like it was before in EMUI 4 and the Drawer via menu setting.
Performance is fine and those problems reported with Android6/EMUI4 resulted IMHO only due to a powersaving profile setting which was activated by default.
In a follow up, did they fix the issue of apps defaulting to phone instead of tablet mode, e.g. Chrome?

I use adb to set both the screen resolution and dpi. My mediapad is not rooted. In Nougat you can change dpi setting in developer options. The lower 1920x1200 resolution is suppose to be able to be set in battery options, but it doesn't work in Nougat.

I still dont own the phone so cant test it but see a few videos/reviews about it and it render games at lower resolution. But only that, games, so all other drawing functions from normal aplications are not afected. It works as intended and indeed it help a lot in fast demanding games (like racing, shooters ,etc)
Yes like you said...did today hevay gaming over 1 hour.... No heat like before....warm yes...but no even close to it.... The resolution is noticeably lower..but i went to max fps and min res....
Defo a good feature...better then lower all res....
Cheers
I havent had any heating issues with g6. But resolution change would a thing nice to see with oreo update.

I see that samsungs and v30 got the option to change screen resolution to save battery. Is that option in the G6? (I currently got an LG G2 and want to upgrade)

I bet we gonna get this in oreo update
https://goo.gl/UKaif3 This will help for the resolution but you have to be rooted
Oreo should bring resolution change option.
Non-rooted option: search Google for adb shell wm size and adb shell wm density commands. I haven't tried the size command but density gave me little bit nicer look and feel.
Bit of an old thread, but right now I'm running this res for better game performance:
adb shell
wm size 1080x2160
wm density 480
Notice that this causes the viewfinder in the stock camera app to be zoomed in and you won't be able to see the full image being captured. But I use the ported Google Camera which doesn't suffer from the problem.

can't wait to see if any of you isn't such coward, tries it, and tell us that it makes wonders for battery and heating....
