Stock Android - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Im just about to take the plunge and root my phone, i dont need Samsung pay and i have insurance through my carrier so if something goes wrong they cover almost anything.
Im just wondering whether (through package removal) there is a way to basically turn this phone into a google play edition phone running stock android, im fairly new to the android ecosystem so a lot of this is new to me, but i hate bloatware (and having 3 preinstalled apps doing the same thing ) so i want to know if you can rectify this?
Thanks for your time

There's a thread over on reddit that explains how to get as close to stock as possible.

Hello Fellow S4 Users!!!

Hey all!!!
I've made my return to XDA after about a year of using an old blackberry when my last HTCrap broke.. I was so sad without my android I spent time fussing with my iPad Mini and it wasn't the same!
So over the weekend I finally switched from T-Mobile to AT&T and I couldn't be happier with my service (the LTE is FAST!!) nor the phone cause this S4 is such a treat as I'm sure you all know.
So as I try to get settled back into what was the daily XDA grind of helping fellow users and always trying to gain knowledge of our device and anything Android I felt it would benefit me if I could get a jump start in my new community!
I have a few questions that I know I can/will answer myself but I would value all and any input from you guys
So first off... What's gone wrong with the ROOT???? I was so excited when the S3 came out boot loader unlocked already and all... I had even pre ordered that one at one point.. But here it seems there is only a select percent of users who have attained root on their phone? Seems as if we as a community haven't quite unlocked our phones full potential yet!!
My next question stems from that last question. How is the development scene looking for our device?
I know the Samsung legacy has been a very attractive platform for some wonderful developers in the past, and that was something I was looking forward to with the S3 and is still true for my S4! My question is how good is our outlook?
Anyways other than that just little questions I have that I am sure i'll figure out as I get back into it all
Any good apps you guys could recommend that have maybe gained a footing in the past few months?
That's guys and I can't wait to get to start poking around and helping out as our device gets rolling!!!
Cheers!
Matt

Oh and also guys!!!
This is my first Samsung phone I have had all HTCraps ever since my G1 it was all those htcs!!!! So even though I've read lots about the odin and that USB Jig thing and all that from the S2 days and such I don't quite understand what that is and why it is that we have to pay attention to such on our Sammie's... So if anyone could point me in the direction of a good guide to learning that maybe I would be much appreciative!!!
Thanks!!

A lot will depend on which firmware you have. If you have mdl or mdb your pretty much good to go. BUT, take your SIM out now and do some research. If you have mf3 you only can root, no custom recovery or flashing roms.
Edit, and no odin back to stock. Very important to consider.

I would enable the Google keyboard instead of using the Samsung one. It has swipe built in and works better and also recommend setting chrome as the default browser because the stock one is nice but acts funny with the yahoo news widget when reading articles.

So are we the only carrier who's N3's came without Knox and Chat On pre-installed??

I realize Chat On can easily be downloaded from the playstore, n it's not a huge deal but I was just surprised to not see it pre-installed on a Samsung device. Especially since it was used in the demo so much. I assume this is because Verizon wants u using their message service (keep dreaming verizon), but still none the less surprising to me.
Now onto Knox. Although it's not something I know for sure that I would use, it is also an app that was being promoted very hard as a great new feature. Well where is it first of all? Am I missing something? Like I said Idk if I would wanna use it anyway;but it would sure be nice to have the option to give it a try and decide for myself if it's something I want. Again Verizon, keep dreaming! I don't think any of us want your security services or your messaging app or your navigation! So yes I'm aware I can easily add chat on, but can anyone help with any info on getting Knox app on my phone? I don't think I'll be rooting this phone, for now anyway, so I would like to try Knox just to see what it's about. Any help/info is appreciated guys, thanks.

Sir Knox is already on the phone. It is not an app you can go into. but if you check the services running it is running from all i have read and understand.
You can do a search on your phone and see Knox apps all over the place.. Like 9 diff pieces to it... Thier is a thread on on the parts of it on this forum already
Actually I just found the actual truth about Knox and the Verizon N3, here it is. Yes there is Knox stuff under application manager, and yes Knox is under device administrator's, and actually Yes Knox is an app that can be opened, but NO Knox is NOT currently on the Verizon phone! Screen shots below.

Waiting instead of updating?!

I'm a little confused as to why so many people are waiting instead of updating to the available 4.4.2. People been clamoring for the update and it's finally available and everyone is asking if they should update or shouldn't?
The Knox issue I can understand, but I've rooted all my devices the day I get them from the HTC nexus one days. I didnt even boot into my Note 10.1 2014 stock, out the box I installed twrp and rooted. The benefits of root far outweigh potential issues and the guides are fool proof. Re warranty, I've seen no reports of Samsung turning anyone back because of Knox. Case in point so many of the refurbished ones sold recently were received with Knox tripped, it's not that big a deal, besides, especially for those in America, most stores offer 30 day returns no questions asked so it's neither here nor there.
The fact is, the update is available now, it makes the tablet so much more of a joy to use and has so many improvements that I just don't get this whole "should I wait? When will the OTA come to my country" thing. Anyhow, I guess to each his own, but the reality is some of you waiting potentially may not even live long enough for the update you're waiting on lol. Live in the now guys!
Also, so many are complaining about the exclusion of Magazine UX, though almost everyone on here says the first thing they do is install Nova or some other launcher, so why is it an issue for them? It's just odd...
Anyhow, rant done.
Lol.

I'd love to update, but I've kept it stock since launch. I have many notes for school on papyrus that I would like to keep, but I understand that data wipe is recommended. Any way around this?
Id love to root and use a few xposed mods to make it more like the pro series.

If you just want Papyrus notes backup, it looks like their cloud services premium feature will do it if you don't mind the $3 in app purchase. If you are looking for a more comprehensive option, there are several ways to backup your data. Through a little Googling, I found this guide to backing up using adb without root. Or you can go ahead and root before updating, and then use something like Titanium Backup to back up your data and then restore. This is just from a cursory look for options, look around, read into different things and see which approach fits your needs.
KNOX doesn't bother me as regards losing warranty. It has stopped me from rooting for the first time ever for fear of resale consequences. I just know that if I sell it on eBay with knox tripped and I do disclose it in my description people will be asking for a lower price whereas if I don't mention it the buyer will be contacting me a week later moaning that I didn't tell him I'd tripped knox. A real potential headache that I can't be bothered with so samsung have finally succeeded in stopping me rooting my device one way or another.

If you pay for papyrus you can backup to Dropbox. Also, updating with Odin you won't lose any information. I didn't wipe before updating and I have no issues whatsoever.

A couple of reasons...
The N10.1-14 is a productivity/creation device; at least Samsung's marketing that way. Some people do actually connect to secure networks and more and more are reading the KNOX chip for authentication. I personally use KNOX and three of the five secure networks I connect to are KNOX enabled.
The question of warranty support on devices with tripped KNOX flags is kind of grey. Not everyone wants to personally test Samsung's warranty policies.
Rooted devices can't use AllShare Cast, have DRM issues with certain apps, can't play DRM content acquired from Samsung Hub, and can't receive OTA updates. Xposed can overcome some of that but not everyone wants a "Franken-phone."
Regional ROMs have very different feature sets. A personal example. Someone here was raving about the performance improvements of the new P601 ROM for Guatemala so I tried it. They failed to mention it was a carrier ROM (Claro), all the stock app icons were replaced with crappy looking "Claro" interpretations, 500MB of non-removable demo games were installed, and Samsung Hub no longer supported anything but books. When I flashed back to the Trinidad ROM the Guatemala ROM either overlaid or removed a file causing an indexing FC loop. I had to completely wipe and rebuild my tablet to get back to where I started in the first place. My tablets are typically from Trinidad which serves the Caribbean and parts of Central and South America and have most of the North American features enabled. I never use Asian ROMs, Eastern European ROMs, Latin American ROMs (other than Brazil) or any carrier ROM from anywhere. Both because of what's missing and what's needlessly included.
None of this matters to people who bought their N10.1-14 as a piece of h/w but does to those of us that use and value its features. Probably 1/3 here actually appreciate the stock features, 1/3 hate TW and Samsung's proprietary apps, and the other 1/3 are somewhere in between. To each their own.
As an add on, there is no risk in trying the update. There is no Knox trip and once our Ota arrives just use Odin to flash that on top. Either way you don't risk anything and you get to enjoy kitkat. Seriously there is no reason anyone on this forum should not be trying this amazing update.

That's the same risk you take updating to any new software. It's the same recommendation whether it be an official update or a custom ROM. So no there is no elevated risk.

And this is one of the positives of root...a nandroid backup! Before any update I do a nandroid backup in twrp so should anything go wrong, I just restore and it comes back exactly as it was when baked up.

I know it sucks :/ I've always rooted and ran custom roms on my devices going back to my S1 and HTC desire. I don't fear the potential warranty issues myself, its just the resale of it is going to be 10x more difficult FYI I've never held on to a device for more than 2 years.

Not seeing the value add verses the risk with a $550 device.

Missing some Advanced Features from settings...

Is anyone else missing some features from the advance feature menus on the verizon s7 edge? I was looking for the switch for the app drawer removal and the switch for the white pages caller id. Is there any way to sideload with out rooting? I cannot root i use samsung pay everyday.
Verizon has removed the white pages feature.
Any way to enable them like you can with adaptive storage?

FYI - This doesn't actually do anything. It will say you've turned it on, but it doesn't work.
They also removed the auto restart feature.
I finally have 7.0 on my Verizon GS7 Edge. I know Verizon blocks some Samsung features, but I was wondering if anyone has a list of everything that is missing. Unfortunately, this is a work phone, so I can't just switch carriers. I had the Note 7 with T-Mobile, but we all know how that turned out. Rather than carrying 2 S7 Edge phones I decided to cancel my line with T-Mo and just rock the one phone for a while. Now I'm wondering if that was a mistake.

Hey, just be happy they didn't remove the GPS, phone-dialer, SMS and the clock - and then offer to sell them back to you [VZ Clock, VZ GPS, VZ Phone, etc.]
Hell, I'm kind of surprised they don't remove the entire Android OS and offer to sell THAT back to you for a monthly fee.

You neither could nor would want to install the att firmware on your device.
If it could and you somehow managed to flash the bootloader you would end up with a locked device forever.

So, How did it go? I got the update a couple of days after you and everything is perfect except for the keyboard. Very Often, while I am typing, the system inserts spaces and misses characters etc. It can be a real pain in the a$$ to type on the tablet now.

I've tried doing the update OTA and it hasn't found it yet.
I've tried to do it through KIES and it says that this device is supported by Smartswitch and won't let me do it that way.
I want to do it through Odin, but I cannot find the update file.
Does anyone have a link or copy of the rom so I can get mine updated?

After talking with AT&T, the only way to update this tablet without AT&T service is to go to Best Buy and have them push it for you manually. Alternatively, you can call Samsung @800 726 7864 and they have a way to push it from the cloud or something.
Yes, old thread, but this tablet is STILL the bomb and many people are buying them used off of eBay only to find the last owner never bothered to update to Marshmallow.
