So yeah no developpement...It's confirmed , the S820 variant is locked down by samsung , yes you read it well. You may never get AOSP on your S7..

You're a little late to the party. There's a thread in pretty much every section for both S7 & S7E discussing this topic right now. All Snapdragon 820 versions on all US carriers including T-Mobile have a locked bootloader. Only the Exynos versions have an unlocked bootloader and can be rooted.

It's really not that shocking. The two largest US carriers (Verizon & AT&T) have been locking bootloaders for a long time. This year, Samsung went with a single FCC id consolidating all four carrier devices into one. The two smaller companies (T-Mobile & Sprint) just got sucked into the vortex. It's probably better for them anyway, since it will mean fewer warranty claims and fewer noobs clogging up their phone lines asking why they can't get OTAs after rooting. 99% of their customers could care less.

Yes i may agree with you. I now understand why most of devs are getting Nexus devices.
But to be honest if i had a GS7 i wouldnt think to root it or flash a ROM , i ordered a sammy phone and i already planned to keep it full stock because new TW is great imo. But for those that were looking for roms tweaks..etc well..

Uninstalling apps in the system partition doesn't free up any useful space. The system partition is a fixed size, and it's not accessible to the user in any way. There is literally no benefit to uninstalling over disabling.

Except deleting them doesn't free up any use useable space anyway. You can't use the system partition for user apps.
So practically exactly the same.

Okay so I've tried searching all over the place for this but can't find anyone with the same trouble I'm having.
The problem is my nexus 7 has basically everything missing, every google app isn't there, play store, gmail, you tube etc. all missing.
There was no sign up process when i booted up, and it's running ics version 4.0.3. Instead of jelly bean.
The only thing i can do is browse Web pages.
There also a tab in settings called developer options.
Any ideas? I'm wondering if i got a developer version by mistake?
i'm basically missing everything and can't do much at all with it.
Thanks, Matt
Strange maybe they sent you a test device on accident. I'd just flash the stock software that Google released.

They might have shipped a pre-production model by mistake, or something similar.
If you're used to rooting Android, you can grab the stock images here: http://goo.gl/p0W2s. Otherwise, just bring it to wherever you bought it and get a replacement.
There are factory images for the device available from Google that can return you to a shipping Jelly Bean build. See here:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
It's a fairly simple process, but it does require some basic setup on your desktop computer. You'll need the ability to use fastboot. If you're not up for that the easiest thing to do would be to just exchange the unit.
Edit - identical advice as above. Great minds think alike
Thanks for the replies, I'll have to try and flash the firmware when I get home tomorrow.
I'll let you know if I bork it up

Really just return it. That's the strangest screw-up I've seen in a while. Unless time is a factor, exchange it. There may be issues with the hardware in a test device, so I would just play it safe (even though fastboot is super easy and fast). And, I'm guessing this is your first Android device, so please don't let this ruin your experience.
ICS runs in full tablet mode on the nexus 7? And somehow doesn't cut off words in the settings menu like the tablet mode hacks for JB?
That's either interesting or fishy

Are all Nexus 7s model number "me370t"? If not, then you have the MeMO 370T firmware, which was the base for Nexus 7.
Sell it and buy a new one lol
The developer options is nothing special... Thats been there since ICS. It's supposed to be there.
But I've seen a few other reports around here that also have that Asus firmware loaded on them. Not sure if they were able to get the stock loaded onto it, or if they swapped out for another one.
Let me guess, you had a pretty tree set as your background image on first boot up?
This kinda sucks for you but I think its really cool at the same time haha. Its cool how it says me370t for the model since the n7 is basically the same device minus a stylus built in

I agree, you should (must) dump the ROM and put it up for devs to look at. It's a shame you had your nexus experience marred by thus, but our devs can surely find some interesting things in the ICS build(ironically, this us how the touchpad got android, someone got one that shipped with GB, and the community was lucky enough to get to him before he wiped it).
Looks like S5 will have locked bootloader on T-Mobile..
So that means people on AT&T are screwed because
1. No Dev edition
2. Can't Use T-Mobile edition on AT&T anymore.
Only Sprint S5 will have unlocked bootloader.
In a sense this a good thing because it will bring more devs to the scene from T-Mobile's section and we can finally crack this open.

I give up on Samsung. My next phone is not Samsung. Im sick of these damn locked bootloaders.
I hear you. Its the carriers that are being dicks. Looks likes Safestrap is going to be mainstream @Hashcode got long hours ahead of him
The only way we can make them listen is not to buy them. Buy an international unlocked edition. But the majority of people have no interest in rooting and roming. I don't blame them due to warranty claims for bricked devices, but they should have something like htc dev where you unlock it you own it unless it's something unrelated to rooting. That is acceptable to me.

Safestrap is fine for me. It's a custom recovery as far as I'm concerned. I don't use the extra rom slots, just the stock one so it works for me the same as having an unlocked bootloader. I never usually flashed too many kernels always so that doesn't bother me. We can do backups restores and flash roms. What more could you want?

Yeah, sucks big time. I guess we need to change from Samsung to another brand, my Note 3 is a beautiful and powerful device the only thing that is keeping the leash is the locked bootloader. I'm considering to go with a Nexus or Sony smartphone, I love how I'm able to do whatever I want with my Nexus 7 2013.
If its similar to the S4, you could also look into the Canadian carriers' S5 and Note 3/4. The i337m (m for Canada and some Latin countries) had an unlocked bootloader. It was the same exact device as AT&T's just with an unlocked bootloader and ever SLOWER official ROM updates.

Yeah, what i love about my note 3 and even my old S4 was the ability to use the ir emitter to control my tv, etc. and well some other cool features like the airview, the s-note, etc.
They should make a dev edition of the phone with multi-carrier support like a (T-mobile/ATT GSM) or a (Verizon/Sprint CDMA) version. In that way they keep the people and devs happy.
I done with Samsung had a cappy,infuse,s3,now n3. I have been looking for a new device for a few months, can not stand the locked bootloader crap.
Nexus devices need bigger screens and better cameras if they fix that I would be happy as a clam.
Till then I will wait for something with a nice screen, camera, and unlocked BL!!!!!!

And also Nokia shoot themselves in foot by going with WP.... If they would've went with Android, they could've been the biggest rival for sammy.

I don't think the carriers care about XDAers. We are such a small portion of the end users, but bricked devices from this forum are probably responsible for a significant portion of the returns.

Just thought I'd share since it's rare we have reliable, official announcement before the OTA's flow. To be clear, I don't know if this update will be Android L. I DO know that it will have the bits needed to support Gear VR on retail devices.
He's also working on getting me the ROM sooner, but I'm not sure if I will be allowed to distribute. Maybe others will be getting it early for the same reasons though so if you want a decent reason to hope....

We WILL get Gear VR support ( the whole point of this thread). Beyond that, I can't say and don't care much. If I was fixed on root or L, I wouldn't be running the Note 4 given how good Samsung is getting at locking the boot loader. In fact, If not for my VR development, I might have purchased my first Nexus device despite the lack of SD (or grabbed the G3).

This is the first Android phone for me where I am not terribly concerned if I don't get an unlocked bootloader. Root would be nice but it's not a deal breaker for me. I am looking forward to Android L on this phone.
As for my Tapatalk signature, I rarely post in forums so I forgot the signature was even there! I more or less read forums these days.
Thanks for posting the information!

Is this OTA really worth taking seeing as we seem not to be close to attaining root?

Only lag I have is the recent apps cap. Takes a second or two sometimes to load up my list of recent apps. Not sure if this is related with ART though. Any thoughts?

Yeah that's the only lag for me as well. I'm not running on ART and I have it so I think it doesn't matter there. Just need a software update to fix that issue then this phone will be perfect!

Agreed. Switched back to JIT Dalvik and it Was still persistant. Hopefully this update will tweak a lot of things.
It's Friday. I wish there will be something during the weekend. Really want the HD calling
So I'm new to the S7E. Only had it about a month. Luckily I didn't have to wait long for the official Android N 7.0 upgrade... Unfortunately there is no root available, which I'm not used to...all of my previous devices have always had full root with some pretty decent rom development. So a non-root device is new to me.
I'm guessing there may be others out there like myself who may have picked up a S7/S7E from people who were selling their older devices waiting for "the next big thing"... So like myself, those people are having to go thru this learning curve later in this devices life cycle. As an example, I didn't know the S7E & S7 (on tmobile g93#t) were not root able before buying this phone. And what root that was available for the MM, the guides were outdated and I never did it I decided to wait for nougat and see what happens. Anyway here we are!
I'd like to try and get some people to post some tips and suggestions for living and enjoying a no root phone especially when you're used to a rooted phone and all those goodies that come with customizing from root.
Samsung themes are ok, not amazing. Many are free and many are paid so you'll have to look around for one you like. The advantage to Samsung themes is it themes things like messages app (default), the notification pull down, the dialer, the lock screen clock. So it can give you a false sense of having a custom rom.
Surely there are more ways to customize these devices without root? Any suggestions?
I am rooted on my S7 edge. I am wishing I had Nougat but so far, am not willing to do without root.

I tried to deal with the root even after the fixes n all that but the random lag was annoying
I'm OK w/o root by using Adhell for ad blocking and EZ Package Disabler to disable the small bits of Tmobile bloat.
I purchased Package Disabler Pro but beyond disabling the T-mobile obvious, what else should I disable?
Is there a list or script I could use? 7.0 Nougat T-mobile variant (no root obviously).

How did you get to activate EZ disabler pro. Mine is stuck at activation with a message. Is there a workaround?

Mine too. I can't get it to activate license.
package disabler is a must! I really didn't like the root on the s7 edge, it was a lot of tweaking to get the lag to go away. The last rooted device I had was my note 7 which I miss still. IMO having a rooted snap dragon s7 edge isn't really all that great. Its just a poor experience and for me, the cons outweigh the pros. I'm pretty happy with nougat and package disabler tweaks. I do miss having root but in this case it blows as I previously stated.

Am I reading this correctly that you have the Nougat engineering kernel for both the S7 and the S7 Edge, and you're demanding money before you'll release it?
I cannot fully root my S7 due to security patch. I have SU app but it does not work. Can I just flash Nougat ROM using ODIN and remove security alert and custom notification on boot? Also, any idea when, if ever, ROOT will be available for PK1 or Nougat users? Thank you.

That's how I read it. Seems he has been a member since 2012 but with not much participation. Not sure how much is trust it to be a working 7.0 kernel though.

I jist found out about disconnect pro.. (just like adhell but better ) it blocks ads in browser like chrome and withing apps itself. This was the main reason why i would root (for adway) but this work perfect without having the annoying VPN key icon on top. With this and package pro i dont really need to root. Nougat is super smooth
I actually use both Disconnect and AdHell. I find that when I turn off AdHell while Disconnect is still active I see certain ad's here and there (maybe I'm crazy? I dunno). I don't see a way to update the blacklisted stuff in either app? I guess they do their thing in the background as far as updating goes? I dunno.
I tried AdClear but the battery hit was massive (about 30%) pretty high... The adclear guys claim they've improved it but since I found Disconnect and Adhell I'm good.
Nothing work's as good as AdAway did for me- but obviously no root so that's not going to work.
The last versions of package disabler pro do work on Nougat, I've disabled a bunch of stuff (like 90 items?) but then I notice the samsung cloud stuff doesn't sync so no samsung backups... I just left everything enabled, I don't see a noticeable performance difference, I do see a little more battery drain with everything enabled though... I never took the time to figure out which service I disabled that stopped the samsung cloud sync, so I figured just leave 'em all active.
As for the guy wanting donations for the ENG kernel for Nougat, I call 100% Bull Shirt! (anybody watch the good place? LOL)... That post is enough to get you BANNED imo. People here HELP each other, we don't charge for that help. ** IF the ENG kernel exists for 7.0, it'll surface WITHOUT your help. **

It's all a joke. JusMEJOSE claimed the same thing on the Note 7 forums when the Note 7 came out. Everyone was excited to think it would have root right away and when everyone asked him to release it, he disappeared. People tried to contact him for weeks and he acted like a prick and would not even answer their messages. With that kind of record, Good luck. Only a demented person would believe that if he had it, he would release it. He lies and expects people to not remember? I think he does it for the attention. My memory is pretty good and I remember deceiving people very well. How about releasing it and then asking those who benefited to donate instead? That's what a decent person would do.

Yeah, I figured you really had it, since you were the one that released the engboot for MM + the modified Odin to flash it. I'm just questioning why you claim to need money to release it in a community-supported forum.

Does anyone have the stock LG calendar app working on an LS997 variant? I can install the app fine, but it crashes upon start. It would be really nice to have since I like how it shows the actual date on the icon.

It's part of the LS997 ROM released by Team DevDigitel. I should be able to get an APK for you but it's probably just as easy to extract it from the ROM. With LG stock apk's YMMV.

I know this apk works since I just pulled it from a ROM that has it included and it was working with the ROM. There must be some sort of dependency that is keeping it from running. I'm going to see if I can do some reverse engineering on it to find out what that dependency is. If anyone can save me a step, I'd be happy to hear what that dependency is!
Did you ever figure this out because I would like to do this myself. Also, you mentioned you had the stock messaging app working. Would you mind sharing the apk and any special instructions not covered by this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/themes/stock-music-app-to-att-version-t3552963
Also, please share the calendar apk as well even though it hasn't worked for you. Maybe I'll have better luck.

Just saw this--I posted links to all of the working LG apps for LS997 unrooted phones somewhere. Once I find them, I'll link to it here.
UPDATE: Messaging App https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8dcSlY-Ip1-NmZfVmRrOXczUWc
Calendar App https://drive.google.com/open?id=0B8dcSlY-Ip1-RUViZzJsNkJUMVU
Let me know if you get Calendar working!
UPDATE 2: I couldn't get the Messaging app to work this time. Not sure if it has anything to do with updating from ZV5 to ZV6...or maybe just that I'm no longer rooted?

You're not on Sprint (lucky you). For some dumb reason, hardly any of the STOCK LG APPS work on an LG PHONE. Makes perfect sense. I understand the desire for the carrier to make the phone "theirs" or to try to go with a more "vanilla Google" experience, but if I want to install LG apps on an LG phone, that should not be more difficult than rocket surgery.
My turn to rant >>> Unfortunately Sprint has the best coverage where I live and their prices are much better than Verizon's. Next time I'll just get an unlocked device. I would love to just root the phone in order to run stock apps, as I had before, but everytime I do there seems to be a malfunction and my phone ends up bricked (not from installing incompatible ROMs or kernels, I think I just flash the phone too many times?). Not to mention Sprint (and AT&T) has conveniently decided to not make the KDZ/TOT files available to the public. Let's not even mention the ridiculous static boot screen...

Someone in another thread suggested it might be a missing framework. I don't know enough about mobile development to be able to say that he was on the right path or not, but it seems logical to me. It's probably something buried deep in the system that would only be accessible by having root permissions.
I do wonder about the ability to achieve this through a terminal app and changing some permissions as the SystemUI Tuner app does in order to change status bar icons without root. Wish someone would work on that, or I wish I had enough knowledge to do so myself... oh well.

Yeah neither of the apps will work on non rooted phones... You can't add the other files to system without it.... And to be honest the Android messaging app sprint includes is better then the stock lg one...

Serious question: how does the method used by SystemUI Tuner work without root, and why wouldn't this method work for non-rooted phones and stock apps? If you're not familiar, the app requires non-rooted phones to use ADB to send a shell command 'pm grant com.xxx.xxx android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS' and 'android.permission.DUMP'. Perhaps there is code in the app itself to trick the system into thinking it has root using these commands?? You would know better than me...
I'm waving the white flag on this, however I am curious to know how that works. I might consider another carrier in the future however. Preferrably one that doesn't cripple stock apps.
