S7 video quality issues - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Got my S7 edge late Friday night and took it to the beach to test out on Saturday.
I have to say, I'm taking it back if the issue I experienced isn't fixable.
https://youtu.be/6pCRRbB-Zh4
The video in the link was filmed in FHD 60 FPS, and the issue is the 'color banding' or fragmentation visible in the color of the sky throughout the recordings. Instead of being a smooth backdrop, the colors of the sky frequently seem to fragment /group up and become blocky, almost like the video is poorly compressed. Particularly visible from 1:15 onwards.
I watched someone else's video sample online and it didn't seem to suffer the same issue. Ive had a look at the settings and can't seem to see anything that may cause this. Anyone have any ideas or similar issues?

Bump - anyone else?

Let me help https://youtu.be/6pCRRbB-Zh4, now people can actually link to it. [emoji2] also I haven't seen this on mine.

Thanks @h3ck. I think I must have a dud device - this is a screenshot of the issue in 4k, too, taken directly from my phone.
I'm trying to work with Samsung now to work out what is wrong. Looks to be compression related.

I see what you mean, I haven't taken enough video to notice this, but when are you seeing this? After you export, after you upload, on the device itself, etc? Also, I noticed when I went to you video on YouTube it wasn't in 60fps. Not sure if you realized that.

This is actually from the device itself (the lock in the top corner is an s7 function and has appeared in the screenshot) - I think the fact the FHD version wasn't in 60FPS yet was maybe due to being uploaded recently - it's in 60FPS now. I've been testing this afternoon with my Note Edge - definitely better video quality on the old Note

I'm curious how it compares to s6. I had s6 and camera was magnificent. This one is supposed to be better.

I actually read a review that said the camera is better in low light but worse in daylight/where there are bright lights and/or sunlight. For me, it has a really similar effect to the old Ultrapixel cameras on the first couple of HTC Ones, i.e. when there is bright light in a photo, it just 'whites out' for want of a better word - completely loses all definition.
A photo of my living room with a lamp on just shows the lamp as a completely white orb, with no definition (Playing around with ISO and shutter speed don't help much at all.), whereas on my old Note Edge (same cam as the s6 I believe), you can make out the edges of the lamp.

What camera module do you have in your phone ? Sony IMX 260 or Samsung Britecell ? Install Aida64 to find out.

Hi CST - I have the Sony IMX

I think I see what the error is with the video. It looks like when you actually export the video the compression on it changes the quality. I would compare the actual video on the phone itself prior to exporting versus the video when it was exported. I see a significant degradation in video quality from post and pre exportation.
Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk

So I read that YouTube doesn't even support 60fps on s7 edge yet (for viewing, so that explains why it wasn't an option for me). Secondly, what I previously mentioned holds true about conversion. Idk how people are keeping s7 video at 60 fps because mine seems to convert to plain 1080P when I trim the clip and export.
Sent from my SM-G935V using Tapatalk

Update - playlist featuring 3 videos indicating the blockiness and compression artifacts can be found here - others are beginning to notice the same issue
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjb1yvLQUxljakYRkd-RlPr00COjSOCcw
Also, YouTube does allow 60fps - not sure where you read that. and this artifacting is visible on the phone - i have to use youtube to be able to share samples of the problem.

next time, you can upload the original video file to dropbox or pcloud , others can view it online or download it.

Camera can't take pics of actual monitors/screens

It may just be me and my Nexus S, but whenever I try to take a photo of something on a television monitor or computer monitor, the camera app lags severely and/or fails to take a picture.
Yet, if I have a bit of the screen bezel in the camera frame, it'll take it okay. It's like the monitor is tricking the camera lens and confusing it, so to speak, to the point where it can't even take the photo. It's incredibly bizarre.
Has anyone else experienced this? More importantly, can anyone explain what's going on?
I get this too but have no idea why.
Weird!!
It's happened to me a couple times. Sometimes it works great but sometimes it trips out.
It is because the frame rate of the camera/phone and the frame rate of your monitor is different, meaning you get the out of sync distortion you guys are talking about. Nothing to be done about it except perhaps syncing the frame rates of your different devices.
Remember, video on monitors and tvs are not actually videos, simply a bunch of pictures in a fast sequence creating the illusion of video, movies, tv, etc. Your camera is simply picking up these pictures and since the two devices are not in sync, the camera ends up picking up bits and pieces of different frames, thus the distortion you describe.
Anyways hope I got that right, pretty sure that is what you are describing.
^^ that is completely correct. It is with all recording devices, even VHS from olden days

What kind of monitor/TV? I have had no issues like you've described with LCDs and Plasma panels. On LCDs i do notice that i get recurring darker line going vertically, no autofocus or lag issues. I have noticed some lag issues on point and shoots though, not my phone. Is the phone maybe in night mode or something, maybe auto choosing it?

The preview is basically a rough video of what is seen. With some settings or scenes it can often lag while the preview is being taken and processed.

I've seen the same behavior. It's just a hunch but it crashes when the camera app attempts to do post processing on the image and correct some things that are "off", color, etc. the pattern caused by the pixels I think is crashing this process because honestly it was never designed to handle repeating patterns like that.
I've tested it several different ways and it seems to be complete dependent both on the distant and the angle of the camera to the screen.
For those of you who haven't seen it, it just crashes, hard locks, and the only thing that responds is the home button. You hit it and it beeps and the camera closes and the picture wasn't stores. No force close

Never saw this happening on my Nexus S, just tried it with a TN and an IPS screen, both at 60 Hz refresh rate... does this have something to do with the different hardware versions of the Nexus S, so the i9020, the i9023 and the Nexus S 4G?

I don't think so. it seems to consistently happen to me with my NS4g and IPS screens. I've tested on a dell 24 and 30" and it happens every time... The only thing that really seems to have any affect is the pixel density of the screen in relation to the distance the camera is from the screen.

Youtube Playback... HORRIBLE quality!

Hello everyone, I'm a new S4 i9505 "happy" owner.
I'm happy with everything about my new phone, EXCEPT when it comes to the Youtube application.
Whether I'm on 3G/4G or Wifi, the quality of videos is definitely BAD... borders look blurry, unacceptable. And I'm talking about HD videos. Videos that are supposed to be 1080p.
Yes, the HD option is turned on.
My friend owns an HTC One and Youtube videos looks just great, just the way they're supposed to be.
How is this possible? Do I have a defective device? In any other situation the display looks perfectly fine.
Did anybody else notice this?
Thanks in advance.
I just checked and it happens to me too ... i have the gt i9500 ...
have you guys tried updating the application an update came out a couple of days back ...
i hav i9500 and didnt face any problems like this till now....
UPDATE:
Ok, this is pretty strange.
I decided to uninstall the downloaded Youtube app and restore the stock one (I run the latest Samsung firmware).
SURPRISE! Problem is GONE! Videos are now crystal clear! Just as they should be.
I wander where the problem is with the latest Youtube app... During the playback I click the "HD" symbol (option on top right of the screen) and it seems turned ON (no red line under though.
Anyone else tried??
Quality on my i9100 is poor even in hd. I'm running carbon room 1.8 and things were fine before YouTube update...
I have the same problem on my Galaxy S2 LTE. It has nothing to do with my network, Wi-Fi, or video quality as I've read elsewhere.
Videos looked clear with the old YouTube, but when they updated the interface, videos look pixelated when in full screen. It's like they left out the smoothing for when videos get resized.
Yup I can confirm the video quality on the latest YouTube app it terrible.
I used an older version and it's great

I have the same problem with the new UI (latest version). Playing movies in HD quality looks a lot worse than in the previous version. Don't really wanna roll back because I love the new design. Hope someone finds a fix.

Anyone found a solution yet?
I hate the new version's video quality.
I 've been Googling for a solution but haven't found one yet. There are multiple topics about this though but none have a solution:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2414543
http://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/youtube/nRKQSLD95Qw
http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=1885518
http://androidforums.com/nexus-7-2013/765061-youtube-poor-video-quality.html
I wonder if it 's only a minority that is bothered by it or if people just don't see it. I 'm gonna do a rollback and I 'll try and post a before & after pic to show the difference.
Ok, I 've made a comparison of one of my movies with the two latest versions:
Version 4.5.17 (previous version of Youtube, with the old UI):

Version 5.0.21 (latest version of Youtube, with the new UI):
You can clearly see a difference especially around the edges. It 's harder to spot in a still than in a movie but you can still see it. Look closely at the edges of my jacket, the snow, the funbox or the treeline
I 'm sticking with version 4.5.17 until Google fixes this. Even though I like the new UI, it doesn't really add anything besides the stupid floating window which I actually find annoying.
My device is a Desire HD running Mustaavalkosta 's CM10.1 SR1.1 ROM. Resolution of this device is 800x480 on a 4.3" screen.
People keep assuming it's to do with video quality, but it's not. Poor video quality creates a kind of fuzzy blurry. Bad resizing without smoothing (is it called interpolation or anti aliasing?) creates a sharp pixelated effect which is what's happening.

That is exactly what it looks like. You see this a lot in games but I had never seen this before in movies. It 's like they disabled AA for some reason.
Got the new Galaxy Note 3 and am glad to say the pixelated effect is not present on stock Jellybean. It is still present on my Skyrocket with CM11, but I guess it doesn't matter anymore.

This is what your phone looks like after 36gb of 4K DCI recording

I recorded a whole bunch of 4K at a concert last night. The phone got hot and my battery drained at over 60% an hour!
I'll post some of the video after it finishes uploading.

Probably just record 1080p lol an hour of recording is a long time for a phone. Especially considering the processor, battery, and screen will be producing heat the whole time.

I don't know, 4K seems like it takes a lot of horsepower to record, so the drain seems about right, to me anyway.
Although the new go pro records 4K but keeps the same battery life as the old models without it, but then again that is specialized hardware.
I do not have a 4K TV sadly, but I figured I could pull 8mp stills from the video

So, Youtube just enabled HDR for the S8(+)

Just noticed this on my S8+, suddenly have the option to enable HDR and the effect is dramatic. Only works when viewing in full screen. Also noticed that the cropping to enable the video to fill the entire screen doesnt work when HDR is on.
Tried it on my Tab S3 (which also is HDR Capable) and it isn't working...yet.
So if Netflix wont support HDR on the S8, Youtube just did.

Yes i have noticed that it's lagging specially when you watch it in 1440p 60fps HDR slows down the device also try to rotate the video. The same feeling when you try to watch a 4k video on 720p tv. Hope future updates solves the problem.

Looks nice, thanks. I like HDR but I have to admit it makes colors seem oversaturated and brighter than real-life. It's like everyone and their brother posts oversaturated/color enhanced photos on social media, etc., right? Yeah, easy to do in photo-edit programs. But, it looks like HDR does it by default, which makes it pretty but also pretty darn unrealistic. I mean, seriously, just look out your window during the day and the colors aren't oversaturated like HDR! Oh well, still pretty.
Lol I used the hidden settings menu to turn on 2160p

Camera is great with gcam. Stock app is still bad and compresses the pics. They just pushed another update today. I just took a pic using both came and gcam file size was 4.47 mbs while stock app was 1.4 mbs. Not sure why they can fix that but it's never going to be good compressing pics like that.

I had an LG v30 and took multiple pics and showed them to my wife on my laptop. Out of 20 or so comparisons there were only 1 or 2 that she felt looked different and they weren't even that bad.
Is it going to beat the Pixel 2 no. Is it a more than capable phone that takes great pics most of the time, yeah!!
After the recent update it's WAY better than when it launched and I'm actually liking it.
Performance, both visually and functionally, has improved greatly from when I first bought the phone earlier this month after the drop to $499. Pictures are still compressed, would be great if they'd get rid of that, but to my/my wife's eyes, *that* is the difference between GCam and Essential Camera. It's like the pictures it takes are good quality, and then it compresses them down to less-than-good quality. GCam doesn't compress, and is visually nicer, but can be a bit of a pain to get the settings right. For quick/social media pictures, the camera is just fine, and hopefully soon they'll either give an option for disabling compression or just disable it altogether, which would (I believe) drastically increase picture quality. Until then, almost any other camera app that doesn't compress will be better.
Also, I've found the quality of the B&W pictures to be considerably better than they were, and that has also increased the quality of the low-light photos (though they still suffer from the same compression artifacting).
Short answer - if you're able to get it from Amazon for the $400 with the 360 Camera, it's well worth the price. It is an amazing phone for the current price.
Did they add EIS for video recording? If so does it also work I'm google camera?
The issue isn't the lens or optics. The camera hardware is legit.
The problem was the dodgy camera app which Essential has been ACTIVELY fixing and releasing speedy updates for.
I have an Essential; hell I'm writing this post from it right now; and I can tell you that with all the updates that Essential had pushed out, the native camera so had gotten MUCH better.
The stock camera is still about 1-2 updates from being perfect so in the meantime I alterenate between the stock camera app and the Google HDR+ app depending on what I'm doing and the effect I'm going for.
