I have noticed since unlocking bootloader and rooting the IR motion sensors seem to be less accurate. Bottom ones hardly activate now. Not sure if it's just me. Or has anyone else had this problem?
Sent from my XT1572 using Tapatalk
Never had a problem here.
Having a big problem now. Both bottom IR sensors are not picking up when I reach for phone or wave my hand in front of it. Anyone else? Gunna be a pain if I have to restore back. Thanks

It's common problem of CM based ROMs.
But I'm using stock ROM...?
Sent from my XT1572 using Tapatalk
I have the exact same issue. I'm completely stock, bootloader locked, etc.

The two things on the bottom of screen are IR lights, not motion sensors. The proximity sensor that is used for Moto Display is in the top right of the phone, next to the front facing camera and flash. This is the case with the Moto X 2014 and Moto X 2015, so this is unrelated to your bootloader, this is just how Moto Display works.
Sorry I actually misspoke a little. The exact workings of this quite fascinates me so I dug a little deeper and found out that the thing in the top right is actually also an IR light just like the two on the bottom of the phone and not a proximity sensor. On the top left I'm pretty sure is an ambient light sensor, but next to it is actually the ir receiver. (I'm pretty sure the leftmost one is ambient light sensor and the one near the left center is the ir receiver)
The reason why Moto display shows up when you wave your hand over the top right ir light but not the bottom two is because in the current version of Moto display, it is set so that the top right checks for things within 1 or 2 cm, and the bottom two ir lights are for things between 10 and 15 cm. Try it out on your own phone and you should see that behavior.
This should also help a bit for understanding what is going on. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/MOTO-X-2nd-Gen/Solved-Motorola-Moto-X-2014-Sensors/m-p/3120329

holly s43t you're right, i just noticed this and was absolutely amazed when waving my hand close to the screen for the top right sensor and higher a lil bit for the 2 below. Thanks so much for showing me that MM didn't mess with the ir sensors cuz ever since the mm update I thought the bottom sensors had moods.

Just installed this app:
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.itsme4ucz.screenoff
But can't seem to find any info on where this sensor is located?
Xoom doesn't have a proximity sensor (the intended purpose of including one is to prevent you from pushing buttons with your face)
I think its next to the front camera but have you tried just moving your hand around the xoom? I'm about to install that app, I'm curious now.

there isn't a proximity sensor, but there is an ambient light sensor.
yep, there are not prox sensors on tablets
what you need is this app:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=976805
we are nearing release and will be on the market within a few days!
Oh no, say it isn't so! They could at least added it for motion sensing in lieu of adding motion sensors.

We could use a proximity sensor to show an auto hidden clock/app bar.
Generally speaking, (this is probably obvious to some) I feel they disabled/hid the notification LED controls due to its location directly behind the speaker. Previous devices had clearly visible notification LEDs, and its likely they felt it wasn't presentable enough to be enabled.
I'd imagine during preliminary designs the earpiece speaker was located slightly lower which would have given the led full and unobstructed view ability.
They likely changed the location of the speaker because the phone's front display wouldn't maintain symmetry. Just my random thoughts.

Good thought, but even now the LED is plenty visible so I'm not sure why they didn't just go with it

Probably due to the ambient display. Now that I sent back my nexus 6 and am using the note 4 till my 64gb nexus comes in, I really miss that feature. It's perfect for quick and easy notification access, but there's no way to tell if you have a new notification, without picking up the phone/turning the screen on. Having both ambient display and LED lights would be phenomenal.

+1 that would be a really useful combination! Devs will most likely figure something out to achieve that.
If the speaker was lower, wouldn't they have to move the LED with it anyway?
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Its not enabled because they have active display. Its there to tell you the phone is dead (no battery) when trying to turn it on.

Ya, see the blink and wave your hand over the phone to see whats up. Na, who needs that?! :cyclops:
From the source commit logs, the first revision of the phone only had a charging LED. The second added the tricolor one.
However, neither LED was ever at any time properly "attached" to android. The "glue" abstraction lib has never exposed either LED since the library's initial commit.

Are the IR sensors for Moto Display always visible when the screen is off and the room is dark. I've had the phone about a week, and I'm just now noticing this.

I have noticed this since day one. If you disable moto display and I think adaptive/attentive display under Android display settings they will go off hence reducing battery consumption.
Yes they are by default... I remember when I got my first iPhone (3g) and seen a faint red glow next to the speakers? I thought I was crazy and finally seen others posting they were the IR sensors that turned the screen off and one when it was by/away from your ear. I also seen this on my Samsung S3 a few years ago.
I can easily see 3 in my Moto X Pure - two at the bottom and one at the top.
I've noticed that only 2 of mine are lighting up, does everyone else see 3 in a dark room?
Two at the bottom and one next to the front camera.
The bottom right one doesn't light up on mine. I could swear that it did the first day I had the phone. Also Moto display seems less sensitive now, maybe I'm just going crazy though... It doesn't wake up at all from waving my hand around the bottom of the phone, only around the top.

I'm facing the same with my Moto X Style. When I'm holding the phone in hand, swiping over the bottom IR sensors doesn't light up moto display sometimes. However it lights up immediately when swiped over upper IR sensor.
Although, swiping over the bottom sensors does lights up moto display perfectly when the phone is lying on some surface like table. Is this normal?

I think bottom sensors only works when you try to grab the phone.. The upper one is the primary one. And it works for the wave to wake up feature

Thanks. I did some research and found the same for X Style and the previous generation Moto X 2014. So it seems like nothing to worry.
Same here, 1 showing at the top and one bottom left but the bottom right doesn't light up anymore, it used to when I first got the phone so not sure if software update has ballsed it up or of its a hardware problem.
Got my 6P a few days ago and the ambient display barely works. It will work but I have to shake the phone around like crazy for it to come on. It never displays when I pick it up or slightly move it like it should.
Anyone else have this issue?

Do you have a screen protector? If you do, maybe the protector is blocking the sensors on the front. Mine is working fine. In fact, I turned it off because it came on too often and the fingerprint unlock is just really convenient.

OK... So it seems that if I turn led notification off the ambient display works pretty good all of a sudden... Turn led notification back on it pretty much stops working again. What the heck...?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I turned mine off. Comes on too much.
I was annoyed that it's too sensitive on the Nexus 6 and for the 6p it's more difficult in comparison, almost a little on the too difficult side.
They really need to get it like the Moto X where you can wave your hand over the proximity sensor and have it light up.
After locking my 6P the ambient display will come on 4 or 5 times on its own. Just sitting on the table. Anyone else seeing this happening?
I've had pretty good luck with mine. Seems like maybe 90% of the time I take it out of my pocket the clock shows

Coming from a 2013 moto x, my 6P seems to sometimes not be sensitive enough/delayed when I pick it up. There is sometimes a 2-3 second delay from when it is picked up to when the screen turns on.
Has anyone tried an alternative active display app?
I find you have to shake it a lot too. Bit of a non-feature really.. it's easier just to press the button on the side.
I have same long response hardly good of a feature too. It does seem like mentioned before, it works a tad bit faster and better with PULSE LED setting off for notifications

I had this too and realised it was caused by the Light Manager app. See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63595333&postcount=2415
I've had my moto x style for about a week now (from moto maker), and I'm struggling to decide whether to start an RMA due to backlight bleed. I've seen quite a few reports of this across the internet with mixed responses.
It can be seen occasionally during normal use, but If I turn the backlight up full, load a black image in a dark environment then it looks like the attachment (or https://goo.gl/photos/8RcZ4JzyRELT3AXRA). Theres a patch top left, little top right, two small patches on the right side and a biggish one by the back button at the bottom.
Does anyone have any suggestions? I'm concerned a replacement will be the same/worse. If anyone can upload a photo for comparison taken with full brightness in the dark that may be helpful. You can use this free app to test: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=net.ujacha.deadpixel&hl=en

I have one small spot it does that in the bottom left. No where near the level yours does. Just got another mxpe for my wife and hers is flawless.
Return it.

Mine seems flawless too as can't see any at all. Reviews or some reviews said it could be an issue. I too would return it as that looks none so good.
I'm having the same dilemma. I have one small spot in the lower right hand corner but I'm worried another unit might be worse.
Is there any negative effects of having a phone with this? I totally understand and agree that because the phone shouldn't be like this you wouldn't want it like this but if there are no cons I think I'll probably just suck it up and keep this unit.

Usually no cons. My surface pro first gen was as bad as the op's and I kept it and it was fine.
