Ambient Display hardly works.... - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got my 6P a few days ago and the ambient display barely works. It will work but I have to shake the phone around like crazy for it to come on. It never displays when I pick it up or slightly move it like it should.
Anyone else have this issue?

Do you have a screen protector? If you do, maybe the protector is blocking the sensors on the front. Mine is working fine. In fact, I turned it off because it came on too often and the fingerprint unlock is just really convenient.

No screen protector.

OK... So it seems that if I turn led notification off the ambient display works pretty good all of a sudden... Turn led notification back on it pretty much stops working again. What the heck...?
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

I turned mine off. Comes on too much.

I was annoyed that it's too sensitive on the Nexus 6 and for the 6p it's more difficult in comparison, almost a little on the too difficult side.
They really need to get it like the Moto X where you can wave your hand over the proximity sensor and have it light up.

After locking my 6P the ambient display will come on 4 or 5 times on its own. Just sitting on the table. Anyone else seeing this happening?

I've had pretty good luck with mine. Seems like maybe 90% of the time I take it out of my pocket the clock shows

Mine does that too

Coming from a 2013 moto x, my 6P seems to sometimes not be sensitive enough/delayed when I pick it up. There is sometimes a 2-3 second delay from when it is picked up to when the screen turns on.
Has anyone tried an alternative active display app?

I find you have to shake it a lot too. Bit of a non-feature really.. it's easier just to press the button on the side.

I have same long response hardly good of a feature too. It does seem like mentioned before, it works a tad bit faster and better with PULSE LED setting off for notifications

I had this too and realised it was caused by the Light Manager app. See this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=63595333&postcount=2415

[Q] Can you see the screen matrix conductors??

Hi!
I'am so happy with my Nexus 4, but today when i was outside i noticed many "squares" on the screen when i tilted it a bit.
Can somebody in here reproduce this by going outside and carefully tilt the device whit the screen of and on?
Is this normal or should i return the phone?

You should definitely return it. It's clearly defective.
.../facepalm
I see them when my screen is off. Don't worry about it, they've been on all of my phones before my N4 as well.

I have never seen this before on any phone.
That's why i'am asking
They're only visible when Mine's off and I wouldn't worry about it unless they show up when the screen is on...

i noticed it on my nexus 4 as well. but i only see it when im outside in the sunlight and my screen is off. i dont see it all the time but at times when i tilt the phone i do see it. i figured it was just the way the screen was. it was no biggie to me
I saw mine while using it out in the sun. They are also clearly visible when the screen is off. How many threads do we need about this?

Do you see them under heavy sunlight? This might be the case. Normally, they shouldn't be seen. However, if I look extremely closely on a specific background colour (which I don't remember now) I can barely see them.
Unbelievable. Another thread about this.

I returned my phone yesterday and got a new nexus 4. Whiteout the conductors showing on the screen! I bought it in Sweden on netonnet and they told me that these conductors should not be showing so much on the screen. I mean I could actually take a picture on the conductors!

Nexus 4 outdoor visibility question

To start off, I just got the nexus 4 a couple days ago. Sold my Note 2, bought a phone and a Acer Transformer.
Anyways. My phone is rooted with Orca rom. What I am finding is I can't see the screen at all outside. It was doing this stock so its not the rom. The light sensor works, it does dim inside but outside it doesn't allow it to get bright enough.
I'm forced to manually crank the brightness up in order to use the phone outdoors.
Could this be a defective phone, or is this a common problem? And I'm aware of the contrast issue, but this is not the case. Its simply too dark

Normal behavior. I just manually crank mine up when needed. :good:
Ive found auto brightness on any phone I have used to be 97.4% crap. That is why I run Switchpro with a button that cycles between 0%->60%->100% brightness.
The issue with brightness sensors is they use the sensor facing you, which is basically adjusting the brightness for the phone looking at you, not looking at the phone.
Never had this issue with any other phone I've owned. And I've owned a few.
Is there a ROM that has the light sensor settings? I cant remember if that's CM or not.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using Tapatalk 2
Most phones that I've used in general have poor auto-brightness. My One X is good and my iPhone 5 was decent about it, but my GNex and Nexus 4 are both a bit conservative with their auto-brightness. I've found that Lux from the Play Store works much better. I would recommend that you and anyone else having this problem give it a try. You can set it up to work as you wish if the app's default settings are too bright or too dim. It's very nice.

Screen flickering once in a while?

I took it out of the box and noticed the problem right away. I can't replicate it since the flickering is very random and very quick. Anybody else experiencing this problem?

Turn off your auto brightness in the settings. Mine does the same thing. I've never seen an Android device with smooth brightness adjustments. My HTC One was pretty awful, too.

Please don't tell me the 2013 suffers the same fate as the first version. My main reason why I want to upgrade mine to 2013 because mine flickers if I am in a dark room.

Holy crap I turned it off and now its flickering constantly at about 30%. And the full screen blackout flickering still persists. I think this one gotta go back.

Try set it above 30% of total brightness. That did the trick on my first gen.

Here's my post from Reddit...
Purchased 2013 Nexus 7 on Thursday and have run into a concerning issue.
When the screen's brightness is set to less than approximately 50%, I've noticed considerable screen flickering and less occasionally the screen goes black for half a second. I thought originally the problem was unique to chrome but I am noticing the issue system wide now. The tablet is set to manual brightness control, as well.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Can anyone shed some light on what I'd causing this phenomenon and/or how to fix it?

This is exactly the same problem I have. Will order another one from a different reseller to make sure different batch. It happened as soon as I took the tablet out of box so I don't think its a software problem.
I don't have this issue on my new Nexus. I did have it with the first generation model.

I had some flickering as well, but it was intermittent. I read somewhere about what people may have done for the problem with the original N7 and one of the suggested solutions was to turn off Wifi Optimization. I did that...and mysteriously, I haven't suffered from the flickering issue since. I'm not exactly sure what one may have to do with the other, but it has worked for me as far as I can tell.
I have seen it as well only on auto dim. Looks like a bad proximity sensor. But it comes and goes. Some apps worse than others. Tapatalk being one. Tried the WiFi trick above, doesn't work for me.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
Don't ever attempt to set brightness to below 30% if you're experiencing this problem. I did just to see how it'd go, didn't go well. Screen flickered a bit then went black (or just really really dark). Had to reboot. Staying above 50% brightness solves the constant flickering problem, but I still get that millisecond screen blackout. Hopefully second one coming from Amazon is better than this. No dead pixel though, so that's a good start.
Got a new unit and problem does not exist, so old one was definitely defective. Screen does not flicker when set at even 20%.
Mine does none of this, mad dim or auto dim there is no flicker. Perhaps anyone with this problem should exchange asap.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
I have the screen flicker issue when I enable auto brightness. If I disable auto brightness and leave brightness level above 30% then I am good to go. I am not satisfied with this workaround so I am going to try to get an exchange at Best Buy as soon as they have more in stock.
It is strange last night, I manually slid the brightness slider below 30% and it was able to dim properly whereas it would in my case go completely dark. But as soon as I tried the auto brightness, it would start to act up again. It gets to the point where I have to try to turn the screen off and on several times before I can even get a chance to disable the auto brightness again.
I am glad to hear that this issue is limited and that I can get a good unit and that this issue is hardware related and not software.
I have return my first Nexus because of bad flickering above 50%. It seems like a senor issue. With the second Nexus, I am using it in a dark room tonight on auto brightness without any flickering issue.

Flickering for me every couple of minutes, manual brightness, anything below 50% going to try to exchange at office depot today.

Experienced it on my first original Nexus 7, replaced it and the next didn't have it. Our new 2013 Nexus 7 doesn't seem to be doing it at all. Like others have said, it seems to be an issue with just some of them, hopefully replacing it works for those experiencing it here as well...
Mine did this at first also for the first day then never happened again

I get some flickering on my nex 4 in the lock screen when the brightness is set to bottom low. I haven't experienced it on the new nex but I'm using auto brightness. Not sure if it is related though.

Ir motion sensors not working properly.

I have noticed since unlocking bootloader and rooting the IR motion sensors seem to be less accurate. Bottom ones hardly activate now. Not sure if it's just me. Or has anyone else had this problem?

Having a big problem now. Both bottom IR sensors are not picking up when I reach for phone or wave my hand in front of it. Anyone else? Gunna be a pain if I have to restore back. Thanks

The two things on the bottom of screen are IR lights, not motion sensors. The proximity sensor that is used for Moto Display is in the top right of the phone, next to the front facing camera and flash. This is the case with the Moto X 2014 and Moto X 2015, so this is unrelated to your bootloader, this is just how Moto Display works.
Sorry I actually misspoke a little. The exact workings of this quite fascinates me so I dug a little deeper and found out that the thing in the top right is actually also an IR light just like the two on the bottom of the phone and not a proximity sensor. On the top left I'm pretty sure is an ambient light sensor, but next to it is actually the ir receiver. (I'm pretty sure the leftmost one is ambient light sensor and the one near the left center is the ir receiver)
The reason why Moto display shows up when you wave your hand over the top right ir light but not the bottom two is because in the current version of Moto display, it is set so that the top right checks for things within 1 or 2 cm, and the bottom two ir lights are for things between 10 and 15 cm. Try it out on your own phone and you should see that behavior.
This should also help a bit for understanding what is going on. https://forums.lenovo.com/t5/MOTO-X-2nd-Gen/Solved-Motorola-Moto-X-2014-Sensors/m-p/3120329

holly s43t you're right, i just noticed this and was absolutely amazed when waving my hand close to the screen for the top right sensor and higher a lil bit for the 2 below. Thanks so much for showing me that MM didn't mess with the ir sensors cuz ever since the mm update I thought the bottom sensors had moods.

Moto z notification light

Does it have notification light and if so where is it located?
I'm looking to buy moto z or note 7, not entirely sure which one to buy?
Z owners try this pleae
Turn phone off and insert charger.
G4 plus has a hidden notification light, next to the fingerprint reader is only visible trying the above method.
No it has the way cooler Ambient Display thing that Motorola's been doing for a few years

Everyone here is going to tell you to get the Z Force. Haven't seen a complaint thread
Thanks I do like the ambient display but I think double it up with notification light would be much more useful. The only issue with ambient display is the screen goes dark after a short period and Ambient Display kicks in again when you pick up your Phone. Notification light is constantly flashing so you're aware whenever you look at your phone without lifting or touching it.

Well, you could wave your hand over it, but yeah, you need to actively check it.
Get a smartwatch, then you'll know when the notifications come in
I posted this question to flossy Carter on youtube who confirmed it does have notification light. He's normally very reliable can anyone else confirm this?
I swear I remember seeing a white LED on this phone near the speaker or something when I first got it and I never saw it again after the first day...I think it has a notification light..

Its sounding like there is an auxillary light, but it cannot be used as a notification light (as of yet, perhaps we can access it if we get root like with the nexus 6)
