Screen mod LCD

After hearing this news about the new screens coming to the nexus one it got me thinking. Will i be able to purchase an after market nexus one SLCD and install it on my "OLD" Nexus one, if not why?

We probably won't know until someone actually gets their hands on a Nexus with the SLCD and decides to disassemble it to make sure everything is the same to know if it's possible. But screen replacement is always pretty risky so unless you know what you're doing, I wouldn't try it anyways.

To me the question is why would you even want LCD over amoled. Amoled is better. They are only using LCD for lack of supply.

yeah i would never try doing that. i will get someone to do it for me and have them be responsible for any mistakes they make!
yeah i doubt anyone will tare down their N1 unless they break it...

well my reason is i like being able to see my screen in the morning while on the bus. Its really about give or take in this situation. Its nice having a really nice screen with the deep blacks at night but at the end of the day i want my screen to be visible with out seeing my reflection while I'm out side..

exactly this guys knows what im talking about!
but if there was a way to kinda provide a type filter on the screen that would help reduce the reflectiveness of the screen and not by Anti Glare, glare is not the problem its mainly reflections
Super-AMOLED displays are AMOLED displays with an integrated touch function..

Ah, ok, that makes more sense. I don't know if it would help at all as I haven't tried miself, but reflected light is mostly polarized, maybe getting light sunglasses with polarized lenses would improve readability?

I just tried that, it doesn't seem to work, what almost sort of worked was putting my sun glasses on the screen and that improved the visibility very considerably. I dont know the UV rating for my glasses but only down side is that my screen a tone darker with the phone set on "auto".

Well, at the end of the day the night starts, so the AMOLED screen in your N1 will do it just fine!

Widespread screen defects? Please reply.

Guys as you can see, many started posting concerning some defects of the Note's screen. It's starting to look widespread. Might be wrong tho.
Should we be worried of widespread manufacturing defects? I would hate sending my Note back to Amazon.de even when it hasn't even arrived yet! I hate all the hassle/waiting/delays.
Please only post insightful/informative answers, because I'm starting to get worried and I can ASSURED you I'm not the worrying or nitpicking type so that's says something.
I believe many or some others people are in the same situation as me. Also I got it from Amazon.de so it's EU Model.
Could this be EU model specific "problems"? If it does NOT affect it's performance/reliability and day2day usage I don't even care then..
But I would hate having the screen of a expensive device failing on me after couple months. It's the phones main feature after all and many started complaining about it.

According to my poll, over 83% of the people here who responded think the Note is the best phone ever made. So I think you might be barking up the wrong tree or singing the wrong Note needlessly.

Theres absolutely no problem whatsoever. If you display a full-black picture on the phones display in lightless environment you can see the OLED display emits a little bit of light (like 1/1000 of the best LCDs I've seen). Also you might spot few black spots when looking at the screen with your perhiperal vision. So yea... huge problems!
Your never ever going to see these "problems" in normal usage scenarios. Some people just like to make practically non-existing problems into huge "dealbreaker" situations.

Did I say otherwise? That is NOT great phone? Best is subjective to each one needs and opinion. But for me it's the BEST phone for what I want and look after. That's WHY I order it.
Don't take this the wrong way but that's your opinion of insightful/informative answer? Please don't answer. Just think about it.

I know. As I said I'm not the nitpicking type. I will never turn the brightness to a 100%(had it at the lowest on my SGS2) and wont stare a full-black picture in lightless environment for no apparent reason obviously.
The thing that got me worried was those black spots to be honest. So reliability is a great concern for me.

Spots before your eyes dept.
There seem to be a couple of cases of defective screens, but a huge amount of opinion about the qualities of Pentile screens. The only thing I can notice with a magnifying glass, is that white text on a black background seems to have a fuzzy red edge to it. Black text on a white background is sharp.

Excellent read Xaddict. Thanks for taking the time to post them. It would be useful for future viewers that might find this thread. I know a bit about the PenTile and amoled technology...
My concern are the black spots. I know some SGS2 screens have them. I did not notice them when I checked it on my SGS2. So are those black spots are anything to worry about? Are they inside the margin of error or something?
And my final question. Do they affect the screen's reliability in any way?

Can't comment on black spots as I have not seen them.
Compared to my HD2, the Note has blacks that are black as the ace of spades on a dark night, vivid colours and sharp detail(unless viewed with a magnifying glass), and no spots.
Not sure of differences between SAMOLED Pentile and OLED Monitors but Sony are releasing a new range of OLED Broadcast monitors that sell from $10,000-$30,000. They are replacing LCD and CRT's in the broadcast industry.
To quote phonearena.com "To wrap it up we'd say that the fears about PenTile appear hugely overblown when it comes to the new HD Super AMOLED technology, which delivers higher pixel density."

It seems like some people are so obsessed with 'perfection' in their ever evolving cutting edge gadgets that at some point the manufacturers are going to need start binning their devices, selling a velvet glove hand inspected version for say 50% more, or start trashing the majority of new screens/devices due to perceived imperfections thus driving the prices through the roof, unfortunately though these scenarios wouldn't satisfy the majority of the perfectionsts (reading some comments it makes me wonder what the writers are like to deal with in real life, how they would like being held to account at such a nitpicking and unrealistic standard) as everyone wants their cutting edge gadgets to be minimally priced as well.
Think about it for a minute, we are basically packing around the equivalent of a cutting edge laptop from a few years ago in our pockets, what happened to the excitement of being part of the technological cutting edge? Enjoy your gadget while you have it, you'll be replacing it soon enough anyways with something new that is flawed somehow but much more awesome.

I remember a similar controversy that was being peddled when the HTC HD2 came out. If you viewed the screen with sunlight reflecting off it at a 45 degree angle, you could see the etched pattern of the capacitive touchscreen grid. I hardly ever noticed it and when I did it made no difference to the quality of the phone's screen, but some held that it was a defective design.

Well I have seen on a couple of S2s and Notes some dark marks in the background. Best visible to me when looking on a grey background with low brightness setting.
Eg. Maps.
I am not too worried about this, since with increasing brightness it gets much better.
Since I checked a couple of stores and always found it, I believe it is a common issue. Might be worse or better from phone to phone, but always there.

So, to answer my own concerns based on your replies: No, is not an issue at all. Well, so far atleast, since it's a new device not many users if any, used it for longer perioed(3-6months).
Let's hope it's all good when it arrives in a couple days. If anything with the phone I will post to the appropriate threads. Thanks again.

This is a general statement and not a direct first hand account of my experiences with the SGN.
The human brain has the ability to ignore small issues or lack of information. For example, you can listen to a conversation with your date at a restaurant even with a lot of background noise. You can look at an image for a split second and be able to make out what the picture was even if you only saw part of it. Tiny issues with the display may not even register.
However, if you are looking for issues you will find them. Also you are far more likely to be bothered by an issue once it is pointed out to you. Sometimes ignorance is bliss. If someone tells you looking at the screen in very specific circumstances will result in a visual artifact, you will tend to always notice it. I am not saying we should not share this information and just unquestioningly accept what we are given. Just be careful what road you go down. Somethings cannot be unseen!
I recently looked up a review of my monitor for my computer and noticed people were complaining about ghosting in some games. I had not noticed it before I read that review, however guess what I always notice when playing games now?
PS. Want to sell a 24" Asus LED LCD.

The OP asked if these marks are an indication of reduced reliability of the screens, i.e. they're defective so they're going to fail sooner. To answer, I don't think there's enough history/data for anybody to answer that question with certainty yet, but I've seen the same marks on my Nexus One AMOLED screen and the GSII AMOLED screen, so I'd venture to say no, reliability is not likely to be negatively affected.

Thank you maxh. I agree with you. I said it also that is too early to tell, but the reason I made this whole thread is so someone with some engineering expertises would reply to ease my concerns.
But it seems that is not a reliability issue from all the replies, even if I believe none of us is professionally certified to answer that. Time will tell.
In the meantime let's all enjoy our humongous SGS2 on steroids!

Colour depth
I am having doubts that the screen on the Note is 16M / 24bit colour depth.
GSMArena states the colour depth is 16M.
This is a link to a website with a 24bit png gradient and an explanation of screen bit depth: Gradient
Looking at it on the note, there is banding characteristic of 16bit, which doesn't show up on my pc's screen.
I tried png & jpg gradients i made in photoshop and all had banding on the Note.
Oh well, what was I expecting on a handset?
I guess GSMArena got my hopes up.

Likelihood of screen burn in?

I was wondering if anyone with knowledge on current amoled displays could speak to potential screen burn in issues. The last amoled screen I had on a phone was the S4, and found burn in and color shift to be a bit of an issue. I know Samsung in particular has made some pretty remarkable strides since then in terms of the technology, but with this not being a high end Samsung panel, where does amoled currently sit in regards to burn in and color shift?

I owned a tab s 8.4 and used the crap out of it. It never developed any burn in. i think newer tech has reduced that significantly.

My Nexus 6 is fine after almost a year , personally i think most people saw image retention and went crazy

Okay cool, that's really good to know. I babied the hell out of my S4, so I was super bummed when it developed the burn in. I know more recent iterations of Android have designed elements with that in mind, so hopefully that coupled with newer technology will mean it won't be a problem.

I own the Nexus 6 and after about a month of use I saw image retention where the nav bar is-so I disabled the navigation bar via build prop and started using LMT-no retention or burn in since then....I would most likely do the same with the Nexus 6P....not worth the gamble.

I had a look at an in store demo note 4 today - severe burn in! Now I know it's an artificial situation - brightness on full and same rotating images but it's still a worry. I wonder if Google would do a 6o warranty replacement for burn-in?

Historically, yes. Even more certain if you get Nexus Protect.

Don't know if you've heard, but just in case you haven't, 6P will have the latest Samsung panels, which I would expect to be similar to the one they put in the Note 5. Hopefully the burn in will less likely. I have a Note 4 and haven't noticed any burn in.

I'm in Ireland so no Nexus Protect just sky high prices - €700 for a 6p

Newest tech doesn't mean "this is the same screen Samsung uses on their S6 line."
Could simply mean that "besides our Super Amoled series of screens we use on the S6 line, the nexus 6p uses the newest tech".

Yea I agree with the above that it's Most likely not the same as the Note5 screen, as Samsung only uses Super Amoled which is higher quality in their own gadgets, while selling just the Amoled to the Other companies.
Having said that, I personally think the whole Burn out fiasco is really hyped alot more than it should be. Personally I Love super Amoled screen, and once you use it, I think it's an extreme eye sore to go to IPS which unfortunately happened when I went from the GS1 to the Moto Atrix, then back to the GS2 then with the nexus 4 and 5 have hated the IPS panels.
BUT, I kept my GS2 for 2 years, and just at the end of it I started to notice the burn in Only in the status bar, nowhere else. As not only the tech has come a long way since then, but also as others mentioned, there are numerous ways to combat/prevent said burn in so its really not something people should keep complaining about as if every person who uses a Amoled screen gets burn out within a few months.
I would take that risk tho any day to get to use the brilliant colors of Amoled, esp the truly Black Blacks...

It's a feature available on a lot of custom roms. Basically it's full screen mode where the status and navigation bars are hidden. Then you can just swipe up from the bottom of top to make them pop up.

LMT launcher worked amazing on the nexus 6 . i removed the bar in build.prop and installed LMT launcher . i have my nexus 6P now (rooted) but have not had a change to try this yet .

swipe navigation works great too. I prefer it to LMT

I neead some pieces of advice really fast!
My nexus 6P seems to have really really bad viewing angles..basically even if i move it a little while i am typing, the keyboard color gets bluish.
Please watch this video (also please forgive the backround noise). This is my 6P. I know that the video is not of a very high quality (it was taken with my ipad 2) but you can still see the problem when i use the keyboard. It can also be seen when i try to reach the notification bar.

Does it happen on yours as well? or on your devices with amoled sreen? I am really interested if you guys have the Nexus 6P. Also, isn't the angle when the colors shift appears too narrow?
I mean..for me it happens at the slightest angle. if I hold the phone with the keyboard open..and I shake it a bit i can see the color getting bluish..like..immediately.

Yeah, it's the same on my Nexus 6P. To me it's barely noticeable.

When you say it's barely noticeable...you mean...you barely notice it. or it is not so obvious on your display? is mine worse thank yours..and by this I mean...does it appear on a wider angle for you? Or is it the same?

Oh..and by the way guys..did you notice the color shift on my keyboard? (just wanted to make sure if you also noticed the green tint on that)

I'd say mine looks and acts the same way yours does, it just doesn't bother me in my regular usage.

AMOLED screens generally have narrowing viewing angles than IPS LCD screens before you start seeing color shifts like that. It's the tradeoff -- along with off-color whites - that you get for having more vibrant colors/real blacks and the ability to activate only certain portions of the screen (not really explored on the 6p, but Active Display on Moto X is an example). AMOLED is considered better for videos etc because of the vibrancy/deeper blacks but LCD tends to be brighter/easier to read outdoors.
I don't consider one better than the other, just a matter of taste.
Did you come from a phone that didn't have an AMOLED display or a Samsung (anecdotal theories that the better panels get binned for them, not by me but in other threads I've read)?

I am coming from a Galay s3...and it did not do this on it.

I'm not saying it's "normal" but rather, it seems like the panels used on the 6P vary on this issue (color shift) quite a bit. I do not know if this would be considered a manufacturing defect but there have been other threads of people exchanging their phones with the same issue; they would be better equipped to advise you re: returning this particular phone.
One thing to note is that in a Reddit AMA the Nexus team confirmed that they were using the latest generation panel from Samsung, so I would expect the panels to be of the same quality as the same one in a Samsung phone.
If you are still within the return window it's up to you to exchange if it is really bothering you. Someone on Reddit was in a similar position here. Note the first reply and the two images linked angle #1 and angle #2, where one of the phones had a much more obvious shift in color when tilted.

I am 100% sure that the shop I bought it from will replace it for me if I ask for it. If i choose to exchange directly on their shop should they let me compare both of them and keep the one that is better?

Will Always on Display future get screen burn on the samoled?

Wouldn't the always on screen burn the pixels on the screen? What you guys think?

It's not fixed to one location, it moves around in timed intervals to prevent burn in.

I understand, but the navbar ( in other phones with amoled) is not on all the time and it gets burned on the screen too. I dont know I guess if there is and option I will turn it off

I haven't experienced any screen burns with my s5 and up. My phone's are always brightness all the way up.

Yup, nav bar is high contrast and fixed position on the screen. Hence the reason Samsung continues to use capacitive buttons. I don't think the always-on feature will cause burn in, since it jumps around.

I think some people are overly paranoid about burn in (not that there's anything wrong with that). I have had the S3, S4, S5 and the Tab S and never had any issues with burn in.

Good, maybe u didnt notice, i had s6 note 5, note 4 all of them had burnin

They have always on displays in stores look at the phones all of them have burnins even the s6 note 5's

Super Amoleds get but ins thats the type of technically they are , they are beautiful the best displays, but the pixel's degrade.

This is why I just can't commit to phones with AMOLED screens. These are too expensive to have issues such as burn in a different whatnot. I know the technology is improving but burn in still exists.

Never had burn in with any of my phones with amoled. Non issue for me.

Yeah use my phones like a tablet, constantly on it. Never had the issue before.

Good for you that u never had a burn in, I had.

My Galaxy 2 got burn in within a few months. My Nexus 6 got it in about three days.
It's depressing to see more and more phones moving to AMOLED.

No, because the screen content moves periodically preventing it happening.

No it's not, AMOLEDs are awesome. As long as you don't use your phone 24/7 at full brightness and display static images on it all the time, burn-in won't be an issue. It's not something that happens willy nilly.

Not this argument again.
