Is there, or will there be a way to use google wallet on the non sprint S3s? With or without root or rom?
There has to be some info on this out there. Is Google Wallet just a gimmick or will this really take off? If so I would think AT$T and Verizon being bigger providers than Sprint, there would have to be the ability to get these to work with it.

there is info on this, if you search.
wallet is only support officially by sprint. the rest of the carriers you will have to find the modded apk for wallet.
(also, i hit the thanks button accidentally instead of 'quote' on your post, so free thanks for you!)
I searched, but anything that comes up is about Sprint having it and AT&T not...But at least I know that it will be possible at some point.
The question is if the At&t version has a secure element. If it doesn't, then there is no chance.

How do we go about finding something like that out? If they are wanting their version of the s3 to work with some other "google wallet" type system, it would seem it would have all the same requirements. I dont see them killing the ability completely, just had the software side removed. But who knows what these guys will do these days.
Att is developing their own system with some other carriers called ISIS. Probably not a chance to get Google wallet working on the att version.

I would try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1365360
EDIT: That only works on rooted devices, my bad
Having to root it is not a big deal, I just wanted to know it was possible to use it if the need came up. Right now I dont think NFC payments are big enough to consider a must have, but if the day comes that 8 of 10 shops use some sort of nfc payment system it will change my mind for sure. I just like to know that I can do something. Im sorta waiting to root as well Its running like a champ and everything that i use daily is working without a root. Once a nice easy one click is out that will not trip the counter I will go for it, or if some app or ability that I just have to use requires it. But just enjoying the phone for now as is
I am rooted still doesn't work on i747 just hangs on activating

Maybe now that so many are getting this phone we will see some work being done to figure this out.
to get it to work you will need to fudge the phone into thinking it's connected with Sprint using Market Enabler or equivalent. That's I had to do on my G Nexus in canada.
so, for some reason, i installed it, it loads but i get this message, and just stopps.
"Initializing your device. this make take a few min...... blahh blahh.. "
thats it..
Worked for me on Canadian sgs3...
I'll try post instructions for it tomorrow evening.

Well now who would have thought just a couple years ago we would see black berry become something to be talked about again?
I loved my old BB curve 8330. When i get some money saved up i might just have to buy this one. and root it and rom it and brick it and fix it woot fun times ahead with black berry!
I don't think rooting and romming is in this phone's future given the emphasis on security...
I like what are they doing, Priv could be in our Office soon.
I sincerely hope rooting and romming will be in the future, but I won't hold my breath.
Root isn't as useful as it used to be for me personally at least. It breaks too much (Banking Apps, Online TV/Streaming apps, etc) to make it worthwhile. I think Xposed is the only thing I really miss having from being rooted.
The Priv is very nice ok, but if he hopes for some success, it just needs a great camera ! But only f2.2 aperture, so in low light it will sucks...

I have the Samsung Galaxy Relay for T-Mobile. Our last supported version of Android was 4.2.2. I have 5.0.2 on it now and it runs far better with it. Rooting is ridiculously useful, and breaks none of my banking or streaming apps.
rooting is great, but i will admit that i won't necessary need it in this device. but like any other device if someone will want to, they can crack it. it's a matter of time and will.

What banking and streaming apps did root break for you? The only app I've had issues with is Android pay, which is to be expected. I haven't even had to cloak my banking app, or Xfinity streaming they all work with root fully exposed. There was a launcher of all things a long time ago, that didn't like root, I cloaked it, problem solved. I'm really curious what apps you've found that don't like root.

Sky Go, Barclays Banking and Barclaycard all fail to open on rooted devices. They specifically come up with an error message that your device is rooted and that they wont function on rooted devices. I did try apps such as Hidemyroot but these failed more often than they worked for Sky Go, and never worked for the banking apps.

Never heard of these apps. All my banking apps work on my rooted phones.
It seems that Android Pay has stopped working for anyone who has root as of now. https://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/43bl05/newest_safetynet_check_detects_systemless_root/
Pay was working for me last night as it had for weeks. When I heard the rumbles, I checked using safteynet helper and it failed. Just to make sure I tried to pay with it and it failed.
Hopefully this is temporary, but it seems Goggle is being pretty aggressive with patching any issues, so it will be "iffy" at best. At least we don't have to answer anymore, "How can I get Pay to work with my ROM" questions.
Some more info; Being the check is made via an API and is server side, you can't downgrade any app to get it to work. While Chainfire is a deity and I doubt it will take him too long to pop in a fix, Google has an army and cash and if this is important to them, which it is, they will beat him sooner or later. You can un-root and use Pay, then reroot.
For me, while Pay was fun, I've carried a wallet and plastic forever, so it's a no brainer for me, custom rom it is.
Update 1/30/16: If we needed anymore proof; http://www.xda-developers.com/android-pay-no-longer-working-with-systemless-root/
I second that... I love v4a way too much to go back to stock. Android Pay is ...uh "a cute little gimmick" thats it. Most of the relevant places won't even let you use it. I have my RFID wallet and that's safe enough for me. Using AP out in public is just a way to show off and get your phone stolen quicker. Besides I'm not giving Google my fingerprint. So I'll stay on custom ROMs that's why I bought a Nexus, that's why anyone buys a Nexus. If Google is going to start locking down there devices like Apple and Samsung... Then I might as well buy THE best locked down phone out there and thats the iPhone...hands down.
People buy Nexus phones because of the customization possibilities. Let's face it at the end of the day customization is all the Nexus and other phones like it have going for if... That's why I own one.

I think it's better like this. If you want to use android pay, stay on stock. Android pay shouldn't have worked with root to begin with.

True I have Nexus 6 and a 6p...I'll just keep one of them stock with Android Pay and the other will be my toy to play around with custom ROMs. Easy to swap out a sim card. Easy fix

It bothers me admit that I cant do anything and everything I want to an item I bought and own (Legally of course), especially a Nexus. I root, I accept liability, end of story. But we all know how accepting liability means nothing today.
I understand why Google is doing what they are with Pay and security, rooting makes the device less secure according to the banks. I used Wallet a lot, but I'm sure Google had a concern being they were holding the liability on that vs. Pay and the banks.
Pay was convenient for sure, but I always have to have my drivers license with me and I always have some plastic and having a feature rich rom beats Pay any day, I think it's an easy choice.

Damn bro, your gonna carry 2 phones now! It's a lot easier to just throw some plastic in your pocket!
Just more proof we need MultiRom capabilities!
Interesting read, guess I'm going back to standard root. Root is the only way for me to use Verizon wifi hotspot on a unlimited plan.
I'm currently using my M8 unlocked/rooted with a custom ROM. I mainly use Root for wifi tethering on my unlimited plan for my son's tablet if we are not at home on wifi. I have been kicking around the idea of getting either the HTC 10 or holding off for a little while for the new Nexus/Pixel phones. I'm also at a crossroad because I want to try and use Android Pay, but I can't do that with anything that is rooted. So Android Pay or Root for Wifi tether. See my issue? Anyone know if its possible to get both of what I want?
I like all the reviews I have seen for the HTC 10 here and other places, so I know I would be happy with it. But I don't know if I would be better off getting the Nexus/Pixel for Stock Android. I would assume the wifi tether would work without all the Verizon block crap, and I could keep it stock unrooted for Android Pay.
I know systemless root worked for a little while, but I thought Google closed that loophole. Can anyone shine some light on this?

Magisk + SuHide = Android Pay + root + tether
Sent from my HTC6545LVW using Tapatalk
As always santod, you manage to come through. Now about the 10.. worth the money to upgrade over the M8?
Sent from my HTC6525LVW using Tapatalk
Did the research on all involved, and got Magisk to work, but suhide (v.16) seems to be currently down due to Google. But I did use Magisk to Toggle Root and it allowed me to add a card to Android Pay. So even if I don't get suhide to work, its nice to have a toggle so I can choose when or when not to be rooted.
Thanks again for the info.
EDIT: After reading all 57 something pages, I found there was a newer release of suhide (v.50) that is currently working. So now your suggestion is 100% working for me!!

I can't explain the details, but basically how I understand it is that Magisk is a systemless root method, and SuHide is a way to hide that root so that the SafetyNet check on Android pay, and other financial apps will pass and allow them to be used on a rooted device.
Af of today, the method works but it's a back and forth with Google as they keep patching the different ways it's bypassed.
Hello, So was wondering since the new root here isnt tripping knox. Does this mean Samsung Pay will still work and so?
I know Netflix one has to do a quick file rename to make that work.
What non pokemon apps that are major might also have some issues that may have some work arounds?
Ill assume xposed doesnt work yet either right?
Thanks. =)

Anything that uses Safety does not work with root on the Snapdragon S8 (Pokemon Go, Samsung Pay, Android Pay, Some Banking apps). The unofficial xposed is working as well as Viper4Arise. There currently is no workaround being that we don't have systemless root.
So unofficial xposed can do the youtube adaway thing?
And hrm.. banking apps.. Ive seen glitches with those on my S6 but Bank of America and USAA seem to work fine tho after one of their software updates?
Just wondering what may really cripple me atm.
