Android Device Manager & Last Known Location - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Recently, a friend lost a phone. Apparently, it was turned off after being found. When going to Android Device Manager, it only indicated that it couldn't locate the phone. I thought that it would show its last known location, but it did not. Shouldn't it?

No. But if the device had location history turned on you can view it by logging into their account via a browser.

[Q] Phone locating problems on HtcSense.com

I have been trying to check the Phone locating service at Htcsense.com but i can't get it to work.
When i login to my account and click on phone finding i get the message that i need to activate that function on my phone, the thing is that i already did that, over and over and over again.. and nothing works.
Anyone else had that problem?
Well - Htcsense.com seems rather buggy for now.
Some times i can make all the functions works - other times i can't.
Mine is working fine in Denmark.

I've had the same problem. I forgot to set the HTC Sense update schedule to "As items change (Push)"
go to Settings -> Accounts & sync -> HTC Sense -> Update schedule -> As items change (Push)
At least that was the problem I had, hope it helps

that was already set as default for me, and i have tried to change it and then change back. i have tried to change every setting even with wifi on and even with it off (in case that was any problem). i have removed my account from the phone and even at htcsense.com and then readded it. i even tried with a different email adress when i created my sense account again. I have tried everything now i think and htcsense.com says my phone finder is inactivated and i need to go to "Settings>location>phone finder" and turn it on.. but it IS turned on :S
The lock phone function doesn't work either.. but htcsense.com says it does
can it have anything to do with that i run the stock rom but rooted and with S-Off?
I have the exact same problem as you, and my htc sense sync is also by default on as items change (push). I was about to have another try and getting it to work so will let you know if I find anything. I can get htc sense to make my phone ring loudly but havent tried locking it down, other than the location finder just tells me I need to turn on phone finder which I have done many times like you.
I am in New Zealand if that makes any difference using a desire z from UK.
similar story here. Desire Z from UK, but HTCSense.com is not syncing my contacts, messages, or location. cannot call/make it ring.
to be clear, I have set the Account to 'push-sync' and I have also checked the box in "Location" setting for my phone to be able to be found.
....and I was looking forward to being able to use this feature as I lose my phone in the house too often
HTCSense.com told me that I have my "phone finder" turned off on my phone, right from the start, even though that setting is definitely on
I rooted my phone last night, with S-OFF too. I can still make my phone ring from HTCSense.com, though it seems it needs a data connection to do that - because I had been using my phone with Internet pass-through and (as per another thread I posted) that made it lose the data connection when I'd finished, and it couldn't make the phone ring till I restarted it.
Even though I've specifically sync'd HTCSense.com from the phone, I still don't see any of my Contacts or Messages on there (same before root/S-OFF too).
It might be a gps issue, can you confirm that your gps is working on other apps?
My gps is working fine as is Phone locator on htcsense.com
My GPS works fine on other apps.
I've called up HTC Europe (UK branch) and spoke to customer services.
They are aware of the problem and said they couldn't give a definite time frame, they just hoped to sort it in the next few weeks.
Kinda sucks as this was 1 of the features I was really looking forward to with the D-Z.

Thanks. Which problem though, just the locating thing or also the lack of Contacts/Messages ?

All of it. On Dashboards on htcsense.com it doesn't pick up the handset - says phone finder is off in locations.
I heard that some people got it to work by signing in with a google email address but this didn't make any difference to me.
None of the features work on htcsense for me.

I'm already signed for HTCSense account from start with google email address.
Have all the problems as described in thread. But a month ago everything seems working at least I can make my phone ringing and have all the contacts and data synced.
P.S. Just tried all services from htcsense.com and seems everything started to work but very slooooowly. For example I get phone locked after one hour after send a command from web site.
after some waiting i noticed that all the services at htcsense.com now is working for me, i guess it was Htc that had problems
I just had a look, and it's still telling me my phone finder settings are off on the phone (they're not).
No messages/contacts being sync'd either.

Exactly same problem, I don't know how to fix it
Sent from my HTC Vision
I see my contacts etc. but for location has me in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean! Location is fine in Maps etc. so something weird happening at the server end.
I tried this a week or two ago and faced similar issues. At first it wouldn't detect the phone location tracking as being on. After a while, it finally picked up my phone but said I was in the Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Africa. The next day, I went outside for 15 minutes with the GPS on and only then did it get my location correctly. It looks like the website can't use the wifi/cell tower approximate locationing system and needs a clear GPS signal to get the location. This limits the usability of the feature somewhat.

Atlantic Ocean just off the coast of Africa is exactly where it put me!!! still cant get it to work tho
I selected the option in Menu/Settings/Location to reinstall Locations. Also then got myself a GPS lock. Still tells me my "Phone Finder" is off at HTCSense.com, and most of the other stuff not working either.

[Q] Can't Download Marketplace Apps Over Wi-Fi

Hey all,
Ok, so here's the setup:
Bought a (supposedly) unlocked Samsung Focus from Expansys (AT&T Branded).
Don't have a SIM for Rogers yet, so just using it on my home wireless network. I can surf the web, access the marketplace, my XBOX Live account is linked up (my avatar is displayed), etc. All good.
UNTIL...I actually want to purchase or download an app/game from the marketplace! After I click Install, I get this message:
"This item is not available from the Marketplace catalog."
This happens for *every* application, paid or free. The only way I can get apps on to my phone is to get them through the Zune software and synch, and even then I have to go through the marketplace to the app where it tells me that its already installed (even though it shows up NOWHERE on my phone), and asks if I want to install it again...which it then lets me do and voila, app is visible.
This is *really* frustrating and I can't figure out what the issue could be. Any thoughts or has anyone else experienced this?!
Thanks,
DL
I just got my Focus today and I've got the EXACT same problem. I don't have it unlocked yet, so the only thing that is the same between our two cases is that we don't have a valid sim card.
Can anyone confirm this issue?
Issue Fixed...well more Issue Disappeared
My issue went away...literally...I don't really know what I did, or that I did anything. I blogged about it here (I'm still too new to post full url's here, so its broken up): geekswithblogs .net /dlussier /archive /2010/11/23/142839.aspx, but here's the update part:
So last night I plugged my phone into my pc to charge, which brought up the Zune software. I wanted a few more apps, so I downloaded them from there. Phone synched, and I went to try my apps. I thought “What the hell”, and tried to access an app on the marketplace. This time I didn’t get the “This item is not available from the Marketplace catalogue”, I got some message about an error and a hex value.
I tried to access an app again to see if I’d still get the error message and…*POOF*…I have full access to the marketplace over wi-fi!
I have *no* idea what caused the switch, it was nothing that I did intentionally! I did notice that the prices are now higher (BeJeweled was 4.99, now 5.49), and I’m assuming its because I’m hitting the Canadian marketplace and not the US one.
Weird, yes, but its working so…yay?
lol the EXACT same thing happened to me...it just....went away? lol I'm not complaining

GS2 'Find my mobile'

does anyone know how this feature works, can be found in the settings under Location and Security. Called 'Find My Mobile'
Particularly insterested in how 'Remote Functions' works as it allows the phone to be locked, tracked and data to be wiped remotely.
www.samsungdive.com
I'm in the US.. I tried it, and but after 30 minutes of attempting to find my phone, and I canceled and gave up.

I have tried it and it worked nice for me...I kept my Net connection on (background Data on too in Accounts and Sync) ..it won't work if your net is off on mobile
I'm in the U.S. and it works fine. I actually used "ring my phone" yesterday because I lost it in the house. I think I registered here first...
http://www.samsungapps.com/mobile/main.as?LANG_CODE=ENG&COUNTRY_CODE=GBR
Once you've registered, your user ID is good across all the different Samsung feature sites. Except for Social Hub which doesn't recognize the IMEI of the phone.

Works great here, takes around 15-20 seconds to get a location and a little less to lock/ring phone.

Certainly you'll need to have GPS signal where you are (in your room, office, etc.) or at least allow it use wireless networks to determine its position.
If even doing this you can't find it, then it definitely doesn't work...

I tried it here in Denmark. Worked flawlessly. Found my phone almost immediately.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
Works for me in Canada, using KG3, and a different SIM card than the one I was using when I setup my Samsung account. Even told me the SIM had changed.
I've got it to work also. Could have been an error with the firmware I was using before...I can't remember which version it was. I'm on KG3 now though
Works good here in the USA for me too. Had to login directly into Samsung DIVE though. Was able to lock my phone and make it ring. Very cool.
Actually, as i see it this app is just for fun. If your phone is stolen, it's unlikely you can do anything in SamsungDive, since it requires an active data connection and even so, it doesn't seem to work if you don't accept google to collect data when prompted. What person would accept that when having a stolen phone ? Btw, does your SamsungDive account show your number ? Mine doesn't, but all features can be used.

I agree with that. Samsungdive is pretty limited. You're better off with an app that uses sms messages to the phone to lock, locate, wipe, etc. At least it's more likely that a stolen phone will be on and connected to a cell network than have data on.

its working as described in the UK.
even what u say is not enough, because in both instances ur relying on the SIM card and/or ur login details, which i expect to change immediately by a phone thieve
however the best tracking service would be by tracking the hardware ID or IMEI of the device, but unfortunately this is restricted to network providers only

Yes it shows my number but not in the spot I was expecting it. It was near the bottom of the page. I had to click on it to get any of the functions.

Ultimately no system is 100%. I just think the system that uses sms is more reliable, even if the sim card is changed it will send the number of the new sim card to a mobile number you have configured in the app so you can still send commands (turn on background gps tracking and data , remote lock, remote wipe, etc) to the new number. No radio data or sync services are required to be on initially.
All this assumes of course that the thief hasn't found the app and tried to un-install it (although it shouldn't allow un-installing without a password) or just factory reset the phone.
Best thing is not to loose your phone
iam here in austria.
on the first day, where i get my sgs2, i tried samsungdive. it doesnt worked.
but on the next day i tried again, and it worked perfectly.
tracking, writing message, call protocol and ringing worked finde. the last one (erase data) i dont tried out
cheers

Wifi, time and root

Hi there,
I'm using CM 12.1, 20150817 version. It's working well, apart from one really annoying thing:
My wifi will not reconnect to networks. Or at least most of the time.
If I set up a new network, it all goes very well, but as soon as I'm out of reach and come back in reach, something goes wrong. My phone sees the wifi network, but doesn't connect. It's in the list of available networks, but just doesn't connect at all. If I manually tell it to connect, nothing happens. The only way to get wifi data again is to tell my phone to forget the network and hook up to it again.
It's not just my home network. It also happens with the work network.
I told it to not avoid bad connections, so that can't be it, besides, the connection is typically very good. Other devices hook up without problems.
Any clues as to what could be going wrong here and how to fix it? My mobile data is going through the roof because of this.
Another thing, less annoying, but probably quite important to the developers is this odd phenomenon:
I traveled to China recently (from Holland) and after I arrived, I set the timezone manually to Chinese time zone. After doing that, time is in sync with local time.
After I did a reset, the phone's clock had shifted on hour back. The local time was off by one hour, and so was the time my phone showed for my home timezone.
I had to manually set the time to the right time, for things to be normal again.
Same happened on the way back, but the other way around. After a reset, the phone's clock was suddenly an hour ahead.
One other thing; somewhere in the last update I managed to loose root privileges. How do I get it back? I would like to give some apps root access.
Cheers,
Menno

Hey, Im not too sure about the Time changing problem, but I've found on CM12 that Root Access is disabled by default.
You need to open Developer Settings, Root Access; then change the setting accordingly.
Hope that helps

Hi Lenny,
OK, thanks, but how do I find out if I'm running the right modem?
Or where does one find the right modem? I just flashed the files from this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...lop/exclusive-antaresone-alucard24-s-t3066696 , using TWRP. I came from the previous version 12.0, but my OTA update had failed, so I did a clean install.
I'm assuming the correct modem would be in the zips?
If not, where can I find it?

Oh, go into About Phone, then find Build Number.
You have to tap at this button 7 times in quick succession and it should enable the Developer Settings back in the settings menu.
Be careful messing around in Developer Settings though, some options in here are harmless, but others can really screw with your Android

My phone got stolen, and won't appear on Android Device Manager

Many reasons,
Phone is switched off
Phone doesnot have data connectivity
Location service is switched off
You had an unsecured screen and it was tuned off
You had an unlocked bootloader and phone was reset/wiped
However IEMI based tracking is possible through your local authorities.
Definitely call your carrier to have the imei blacklisted if possible.

This can happen for various reasons. My sincere suggestion, forget about the phone and move on, it's a long shot to find your phone back.
