Screen burn-in -- is it still an issue - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I'm looking into buying Nexus 6p to replace my old N5. From reading the reviews, it seems great, the only real issue that I can see is the screen burn-in. (Some reviews, like this one here, complained about the burn-in after one week of usage!). My question: on real-life units, does it really happen? Some people here must have used theirs for some months, is the burn-in already noticeable?
Obviously, all the reviews were done on the first units released, so I really hope Huawei/Google got their act together.

I've had mine for months and I don't have any burn-in at all. Obviously YMMV though.

No burn in here either. Going on 2 months.. 32GB Graphite all good.

Burn-in is an issue on any OLED or plasma display.

No burn in and using dark theme....

I haven't had any burn in either. I would imagine if you watch a lot of video and the soft keys are visible, then over time there could be burn in there.

Likelihood of screen burn in?

I was wondering if anyone with knowledge on current amoled displays could speak to potential screen burn in issues. The last amoled screen I had on a phone was the S4, and found burn in and color shift to be a bit of an issue. I know Samsung in particular has made some pretty remarkable strides since then in terms of the technology, but with this not being a high end Samsung panel, where does amoled currently sit in regards to burn in and color shift?

I owned a tab s 8.4 and used the crap out of it. It never developed any burn in. i think newer tech has reduced that significantly.
My Nexus 6 is fine after almost a year , personally i think most people saw image retention and went crazy

Okay cool, that's really good to know. I babied the hell out of my S4, so I was super bummed when it developed the burn in. I know more recent iterations of Android have designed elements with that in mind, so hopefully that coupled with newer technology will mean it won't be a problem.

I own the Nexus 6 and after about a month of use I saw image retention where the nav bar is-so I disabled the navigation bar via build prop and started using LMT-no retention or burn in since then....I would most likely do the same with the Nexus 6P....not worth the gamble.
Hi...
I had a look at an in store demo note 4 today - severe burn in! Now I know it's an artificial situation - brightness on full and same rotating images but it's still a worry. I wonder if Google would do a 6o warranty replacement for burn-in?

Historically, yes. Even more certain if you get Nexus Protect.
Don't know if you've heard, but just in case you haven't, 6P will have the latest Samsung panels, which I would expect to be similar to the one they put in the Note 5. Hopefully the burn in will less likely. I have a Note 4 and haven't noticed any burn in.

Yep, confirmed: Nexus 6P has the latest generation panels from Samsung. One of things we deeply care for is the quality and accuracy of the display through which all of us connect with the stuff we care about. We created a very tight spec (white-point temperature, delta-E variance, color-space accuracy, etc) for the 6P WQHD AMOLED panel, so it was important that we use the most cutting edge panel technology available.

I'm in Ireland so no Nexus Protect just sky high prices - €700 for a 6p
Newest tech doesn't mean "this is the same screen Samsung uses on their S6 line."
Could simply mean that "besides our Super Amoled series of screens we use on the S6 line, the nexus 6p uses the newest tech".

Yea I agree with the above that it's Most likely not the same as the Note5 screen, as Samsung only uses Super Amoled which is higher quality in their own gadgets, while selling just the Amoled to the Other companies.
Having said that, I personally think the whole Burn out fiasco is really hyped alot more than it should be. Personally I Love super Amoled screen, and once you use it, I think it's an extreme eye sore to go to IPS which unfortunately happened when I went from the GS1 to the Moto Atrix, then back to the GS2 then with the nexus 4 and 5 have hated the IPS panels.
BUT, I kept my GS2 for 2 years, and just at the end of it I started to notice the burn in Only in the status bar, nowhere else. As not only the tech has come a long way since then, but also as others mentioned, there are numerous ways to combat/prevent said burn in so its really not something people should keep complaining about as if every person who uses a Amoled screen gets burn out within a few months.
I would take that risk tho any day to get to use the brilliant colors of Amoled, esp the truly Black Blacks...

It's a feature available on a lot of custom roms. Basically it's full screen mode where the status and navigation bars are hidden. Then you can just swipe up from the bottom of top to make them pop up.

I really don't think so-material design is a good thing for amoled displays since the notification bar isn't just black anymore...I have had my Nexus 6 for almost a year now and I don't have a burn in of the notification bar-there is some retention of the signal and battery icons but it goes away after a few minutes.
Now the navigation bar is a different story-I got mine disabled and I don't have any burn in or image retention there and I will be doing the same once I get my Nexus 6P.
My Galaxy S3 doesnt have notification bar burn in after 3 year. So i think it depend how you use your device

You can't make the claim "most." Mine never had any burn-in whatsoever.
Don't use sweeping generalizations like that because you've visited a location (forum post) where the main topic was complaining about the burn-in. That does not mean "most" had burn-in problems.

umm, ok.
I've used AMOLED since the Galaxy S and never seen burn-in yet. Had 7 AMOLED phones (currently on Nexus 6) and 2 tablets (7.7 and Tab S) and have yet to experience even a hint of this burn-in phenomenon. The only time I've personally witnessed burnt OLED is on a Samsung Captivate demo unit.
I don't see it being an issue. I have used many panels with amoled including this Nexus 6 since release.
burn-in is based on usage. i have a '13 X and the nav bar def has some image retention. i also see the fade of the notification bar. it has to be in the right background to see them, but they are there.
don't leave your screen on all day and on the same app and you shouldn't have issues.
I noticed it very quickly on my nexus 6. I believe IPS screens get image retention, which is temporary and can go away. AMOLEDS actually get burned in and it is permanent. Google's insistence in using onscreen nav buttons are why I don't liek them.
I was very excited for the Nexus 6, despite it's AMOLED screen. It was love at first sight when it finally arrived and heartbreak a week later after returning it due to burn in with moderate use.
I was quite unhappy to hear Google was going AMOLED again. This would have been an immediate buy for me but now I just don't think I can do it.
Despite it's beauty I just think AMOLED is a flawed technology. For the price we pay for most of these phones a screen that can degrade or burn in just a few weeks to a year is unacceptable to me.

'It's'?! She's your Grandmother, show some respect!
it's going to depend greatly on your specific panel. My N6 has no burn in at all and i've had it since launch. I even tested it on the app used in the AP review and don't see any burn at all. Typically, people come to forums to complain about an issue. Not too many people go running to the forums to tell everyone that their screen is fine. I look at it like this: Google has a pretty damn good policy on defective devices. If my screen has issues, i feel confident that Google will send me another free of charge.

I got one a few days ago - love it so far. Getting used to it - I have used Samssung phones for so long, flashing is a bit different on this device - still learning the language, i.e. Vendor and stuff like that - but loving it - and love MM a ton.
I do not see any "Pink Issues" on my phone (frankly I didn't knwo there was an issue with Pink hues on screens until I read this thread - don't know the build date as I already flashed a few roms - but like I said, I haven't noticed anything odd...
awesome phone -
To those who have it, have you checked it's manufactured date? I'm curious if they ironed out all of the issues.
Anyone care to post a screen on (100% not adaptive brightness)? Maybe compared to another phone with same brightness?

It might be worth giving it another shot with Gold. Which phone are you on now?

I've had a bunch of the newer ones, just to try them out, but keep coming back to my trusty Nexus 6.
Lg G3, Galaxy s5, Nexus 6, Nexus 6p, Note 5, back to Nexus 6, Nexus 6p again, One Plus X (cheap, wanted to try it), back to my Nexus 6.
Really not sure what it is about the 6p, something just doesn't feel complete to me. I compare it to the HTC M7 and the M7 feels WAY more solid. They're both made out of the same material but there is something "hollow" about the 6p.
I'm debating between the S7 Edge and the LG G5, especially since they've got the volume buttons on the side again.

Difference is IPS (G5 rumored to be Amoled) vs Amoled. Since both are going to be Snapdragon 820, I don't see development being an issue. But what I do remember is that the G3 had horrible AOSP, at least at the beginning, not sure of it after that.

IMX258

Does anyone know if LG was able to squeeze any more performance out of a 2 year old camera sensor? Are there any sources/articles on if they were able to? I am happy with the picture quality in most situations, but I can't help feeling like I ultimately downgraded from the LG V10. The screen is definitely a lot better than the V10, and performance seems snappier. I love LG phones, though they have let me down with a few things in the past. My original V10 and all 3 Asurion replacements thereafter ended up with bad screen retention. I don't remember having it on my G2 or G4, though I've seen many people complain that they had the issue. I'm actually kind of kicking myself right now for jumping the gun, because I kind of want to try the S8 out (though I really am not a fan of the curves when it comes to practicality and durability), but I doubt I'd be able to now, because I've already returned the G6 twice. Once because the silver was great to look at, but the black divider between the screen and silver bezels was an eyesore. The second time because the glass cover over the camera was cracked right out of the box. They literally told me I cannot do another exchange, but there are two Verizon stores in my area. Maybe the other one would. And I don't think there will be much development on the phone by the android community. There isn't even a dedicated Verizon LG G6 section yet.
Ended up returning it for an S8. Question is moot.

Im more interested to know why on earth they use a 2 year old sensor in a flagship device?
Yes, newer isn't always better but for camera sensors it is.
And then they price it out of the market with an insanely high price tag. I do not understand this tactic.
I like my LG G2 so much, that it has increased my loyalty to LG (never had an LG device before) but from the G3 onwards it has been a slow decline.
Newer isn't always better. I have a 6 year old dSLR that blows any smartphone out of the water. There's a lot more to a camera than a sensor.

pretty much. Some worse than others. But all had it. It was just like this pink tint that would surround the edges. They released an update to fix it and it made it a little better but if you tilt the phone I still saw pink. Coming from the s7e which had a perfect display maybe I was more picky then most. It was just something I couldn't look past. Sucked too cuz I REALLY liked the battery life I was getting.
Ive just Googled the fault and seen some pics, there's no way anyone could ignore that.
I had a very similar problem on a professional Dell 24 inch monitor a few years ago. Dell tried denying there was a fault but I had two of the exact same models side-by-side on my desk... one working perfectly, one with the pink tinge. After sending a few pics they replaced the faulty one.
So many people tout Samsung screens as the best on mobile phones. I've always disagreed and to me this proves it.
Maybe I just got a good unit. I don't see any pink. The only thing I notice is a slight shadow effect on the left and right edges of the screen when the phone is viewed at certain angles. I suspect this has something do do with the curves of the display. I was one of the few people who wanted a flat screen S8, but I'm okay with it now.

Truth About Oneplus 8 Pro Display!

I am not Going to waste your time!
Read it Carefully: Truth is Oneplus 8 Pro Display issue is pretty solid. And there is literally nothing they can do to fix that issue via software as that is the Hardware problem.
For details see this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3dfF6JehZ0s
I have also attached two screenshot of that video at the attachment section.
1. First Screenshot is from The Early Unit
2. Second Screenshot is from The Replacement Unit
NB: Oneplus is trying to hide the display issue via software update by reducing the capability of dimming the brightness at low level I mean you can't lower the brightness like other phones or like the previouds unit of OP8 Pro where you could previously see those issue clearly. See that video by SuperSaf for better understanding. That's why people who got the device recently are not complaining about that but yet you can see those issue with replacement unit. And after zooming the video and photo you can clearly see a horizontal wide line through punch hole Camera. It is hardware issue literally as they could not master the Laser cut tech like Samsung. So, spend your money wisely!
So, now what
Pretty sure it's a Samsung display. Mine is flawless. Have had it since launch day. Maybe I got lucky?
What display issue? This is the best screen on a smartphone I've had.
Yeh, so far my screen is brilliant looking!
I hope most people with an effected screen makes a fuss to OnePlus so it hurts them in their pockets. I hate when the consumer takes the hit when OnePlus should be addressing the problem and being honest. I am lucky I feel in my unit but if OnePlus doesn't act transparent, this will be my first and last product I purchased.
My first unit had this problem too. I really loved the phone but couldn't stand the tint so I got a replacement unit. My replacement unit at first had the same problem on greys, but I wasn't interested in shipping it back because I had to import my phone to Australia (no official Oneplus store). So I decided to get rid of the grey in the system ui by using a pitch black substratum theme, and I never saw the problem again, even on grey. I even went looking for it the other day and still couldn't see anything worse than what I see on my galaxy tab s6 also with an amoled display. Either recent updates fixed the issue, or I just got charmed by the otherwise gorgeous display. I am not too salty about it at all personally.
My screen is great, no issues.
No issues on mine.
In fact not had any of the issues ever mentioned about the 1+8pro
Apologies to the OP, but I have to join the chorus here. I got my 8 Pro on the second, "pre-launch", and one of the first things I did upon receiving it was inspect the screen for the noted problems. Couldn't find one flaw and the display itself is simply beautiful. Best Android on the market, at the moment, imo.
I have to agree with the ones with a seemingly perfect display.
Got mine on launch and it's the best android phone I've ever owned.
I had mine pre-ordered and been using since day one. Not a single problem with the screen. In fact it's the best one I have ever had on a phone. Looks amazing. No issues here.
Got mine at launch. Tried all the tests I read here and had no problems. Beautiful display. The people that have problems are always the loudest. That doesn't mean it's everyone or even particularly widespread

Do you think it's a software issue? I surely envy those guys who got a perfect panel.

I think it's HW. I don't think there is a perfect panel either, I think people just aren't looking for it or testing for it.

Exactly this. People saying that their panel is perfect is because they don't use dark themes with grey backgrounds

Why is it hard to believe people actually have a great screen?
I have had my 8pro since release day and haven't noticed any issues, I use dark mode on everything, I have wallpapers of all colours including greys, now, if you tell me I haven't look hard enough, then that's your problem. I absolutely love my phone and the screen. Best I've ever owned.
The phone is not without faults, but comments like yours assume that everyone has experienced the same things as you... Could it be the light receptors in your eyes are faulty? Cos my 20/20 vision has yet to see any green tint, and crushed blacks on my handset.

How can OP release FW updates that affect every phone to try and fix the display, but your phone is fine? They even admitted it to Android Police. There's literally commits in the source altering the gamma levels!
