Strange packages - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello friends.
I noticed than in my untouched 6p, my rom has a few packages that I've not seen before on AOSP, but were added by Huawei. Can anyone please shed some light on what these do, and if they can be safely frozen or removed?
com.android.huawei.hiddenmenu
com.huawei.callstatisticsutils
com.huawei.entitlement
com.huawei.mmitest aka HwMMITest
com.huawei.sarcontrolservice
Thanks and best regards.

Well because I don't know that they should be there in the first place. They were added by Huawei and therefore are not part of what a Nexus should be (similar to why I remove carrier specific packages), and especially because I don't trust anything I don't know what it does.

You need them from what I understand.
the com.huawei.entitlement has to do with tethering
the com.huawei.mmitest aka HwMMITest has to do with all the hardware test
I'm not 100% sure what the others are, but rest assured, I'm sure they were approved by Google.

And now the New York Times has reported snooping by Huawei
Hello psyonicus,
I posted this on the Google Nexus 6P forum yesterday so these modules you discovered are much more worrisome:
"I just read this NYT's article,
Secret Backdoor in Some U.S. Phones Sent Data to China, Analysts Say
It says that a Chinese firm, Adups, who makes software for updating a smartphone's firmware, was discovered by a US security company to be monitoring owners' phone usage. One of the two manufacturers who use Adups is Huawei, the maker of the 6P. Some quotes from the article:
"Security contractors recently discovered preinstalled software in some Android phones that monitors where users go, whom they talk to and what they write in text messages. "
"Adups intentionally designed the software to help a Chinese phone manufacturer monitor user behavior"
"Adups provides software to two of the largest cellphone manufacturers in the world, ZTE and Huawei. "
Google, please assure us that this firmware is not in our Nexus 6P's!"
Since this is my first post, I wasn't allowed to include the link to the NYT's article but you can look it up easily from its title.
I hope others will now also follow up on this story.

Very cool! More NFC functionality is awesome, IMO! Thanks for posting man!
Now where's the manual download link
Too bad it doesn't include the Random Reboot fix, as that (IMO) is a much more needed update. *smh*
http://androidandme.com/2011/02/pho...s-new-nfc-features-random-reboot-bug-remains/
how come i didnt get the update???
Same as before; roll-out is staggered so not everyone will auto-download it on day-1. Could try calling *#*#checkin#*#* & see if that kicks it in... didn't for me though. Hence the hope someone posts the file so it can be manually installed
Noone has it yet, be patient

looking forward to the OTA update
Excited about NFC, but far more disappointed by lack of major bug fixes.

disagree. This will allow users to share contact info directly from phone to phone. it will also allow you to write to NFC tags which can be very cool. So for example, I have a watch I wear that is a NFC tag with 4k of memory. With the new release I can write change the content of what is on that tag. Right now I keep it as my contact info.
Who said major bugs won't be fixed? Clearly google decided to showcase 2.3.3 because of the NFC thing. Fixed bugs has never been showcased in change logs by google. So there is still hope!!!
I once had the idea of using NFC as input for password, like an electronic key. This will allow greater convenience once device level encryption is supported. I hope this can be realized some day.

The hardware supports it. NFC with a secure element provides a new level of security. Just needs to be implemented in items. they already have house locks and car door locks that use this type of system. Just need PCs to adopt it too.

From what I understand it has to be done on an unsecured network and has to be at the exact same time as you update the app. Making it next to impossible as a hacker would have to know your updating habits!
Sent from my SM-G920I using Tapatalk
Even with 600 million devices at risk, the chances that this exploit could ever be used is minimal because as mentioned above it required someone to do some pretty unlikely things on a network with a hacker
You guys act like you all work for some intelligence companies and hackers would give a **** to steal your data.

I believe it should be easy to fix. I cannot try because I have have Swiftkey preinstalled but I believe these are the methods you can try...
1. Update the Swiftkey to the one on Play Store.
2. Disable the Swiftkey application. I believe all non Samsung system applications and some of Samsung's system applications should be able to be disabled. Swiftkey shouldn't be a problem...
3. You are here on xda so chances you will be rooting your phone I assume? If you have root, you can just uninstall it.

Totally overblown vulnerability article today on Swiftkey. Firstly I seriously doubt 600M phones have it. I just checked 8 Samsung phones from various carriers - Sprint, Verizon, US cellular - S3, S4's, S5's, Note 2 and 3's and out of those 8 only one had Swiftkey on it. Easy to uninstall or Freeze if rooted. I take this as a punch back from someone on the Apple fan club finding a minor and hard to exploit vulnerability in android since Apple just got hit big in the last week or so. If you didn't find one of the articles detailing this exploit here's the skinny: It only can be exploited if you are on Wifi and on the same Hotspot or router as a would be hacker. That hacker needs to do some fairly complex stuff to spoof a Swiftkey server and your phone has to be trying to download a language pack update. I'd say there is about a 1 in 600 million chance of that happening

Galaxy S6 Keyboard Security Fix
Hello all,
So we all know about the security flaw of the Samsung keyboard app that has affected the Galaxy S6, S5, S4 and other devices. Simply installing a third-party keyboard will not fix the problem. You need to completely uninstall it.
Source: http://www.naldotech.com/how-to-fix-galaxy-s6-keyboard-swiftkey-security-issue/
Note: Make sure to have a third-party keyboard installed or you will not be able to use the phone.
1. You need root access and Titanium Backup.
2. Open Titanium and go to Backup/Restore.
Scroll down until you find Samsung Keyboard 4.0 and tap on it.
Make a backup first and then press the uninstall button"".
This isn't the best solution but it will work for all the people who want to sleep well at night without the fear of the flaw.
there is nothing to worry about, don't connect to unsecure networks (but how often do you do that) and don't update the language packs when you are on one (how often do you do that? once during setup!!)
ive always preferred the google keyboard, thank you.
The bug is not in the app called "SwiftKey" that comes preinstalled or the one you might get from the Play Store, but in the stock Samsung keyboard app, which uses an SDK from SwiftKey (here referring to SwiftKey the company, not the aforementioned SwiftKey app) to do its word predictions. The vulnerability can be exploited (as I understand it) as often as this stock keyboard polls for language updates. Not sure how often that is, but it isn't user initiated, so it could happen at any time if the app polls for an update while the user is connected to a network with a malicious user on it. The best protection for the average user (as I understand it) is to simply avoid connecting to networks whose security you aren't absolutely certain of. this is the technical writeup where I got most of my info from, however, they do talk about a "Swift keyboard", which the other reputable sources I've seen (such as this SwiftKey article on the issue) clarify as the stock Samsung keyboard.
okay if I understand you correctly you are saying that the Samsung keyboard was developed using the SDK from swifty and the only way to not be vulnerable to this exploit is to remove the stock samsung keyboard and use a third-party alternative is that correct?

If you are rooted and have the ability to completely remove it, I think that would probably get rid of the issue as well, but I can't say that definitively, and I can't say for sure what side effects that might have. (If someone who knows the internals a bit better would weigh in, I would appreciate some clarification on that point as well.) I know that just switching the default keyboard to a third-party isn't good enough. What I am doing until a fix comes out (which doesn't really differ from my normal behaviors, but that's beside the point) is basically only connecting to the wifi at home, work, and the university I am attending. I also added the update site (skslm.swiftkey.net) to my hosts file (using AdAway), which should block any traffic to the update site from leaving the phone.

You could just wait a few days, knowing that the risk is very insignificant in the first place:
Update: Samsung reached out to us to announce that it will soon patch the vulnerability through Knox. Read the full statement below:
Samsung takes emerging security threats very seriously. We are aware of the recent issue reported by several media outlets and are committed to providing the latest in mobile security. Samsung Knox has the capability to update the security policy of the phones, over-the-air, to invalidate any potential vulnerabilities caused by this issue. The security policy updates will begin rolling out in a few days. In addition to the security policy update, we are also working with SwiftKey to address potential risks going forward.

False. Anyone with a little programming knowledge and the right tools could easily set up a program to passively take advantage of this exploit. It doesn't require the user to do anything to the keyboard app, the app polls for updates to its language files every so often regardless of anything the user does. And all the attacker has to do is use software that's already out there that lets them write programs to intercept and alter web traffic. Heck, there's a proof of concept by the people at NowSecure that should be pretty easy to turn into a usable hack. An industrious hacker might not even have to be nearby, they could tuck a Rasperry Pi away in the corner of a starbucks and infect some phones that way. Are you at any risk in most situations? Probably not. But I still would make sure your phone doesn't automatically connect to unsecured wi-fi.

Hi
The Q/A section is for questions, sure! But newbies create individual threads for asking noob questions. Is it not better to create one single thread where noob questions can be posted? Also, every thread created by a newbie doesn't always get answered, creating garbage in the Q/A section. In such cases, I've seen some members creating duplicate threads with the same question but a different thread name. Thought it would be better to create a place where they can at least have hopes to get answers.

Samsung hasn't done removable batteries since the S6... and considering all the major manufacturers have made the decision to go the sealed batter route, at least on the high-end market, I don't see removable batteries coming back. :/
It's not AS bad if you plan on changing your phone every 1-2 years, BUT for those who keep their phones for 3+ years, it's a concern. However, most people seem to be on that 1-2 replacement cycle, so manufacturers go with the majority, vs the small subset of people who keep their phones for an extended period.
OK so I've had all the nexus phones since the GNex (except the 5X) and have been happily rooted and flashing ROMS, but I'm a noob as far as recent Samsung's go.
Today I impulse ordered a UK Snapdragon S8 (The device is EPIC in hand)..... What's the likelihood of root & custom roms happening? this could honestly make or break me taking delivery of the device

You can download kidsmode, which can set the phone into limited access environment for children. Also you can use Knox or use secure folder to set separate account with restricted access. But in personal device like a phone, most people carry in their pocket I don't see much demand for full multiuser setup similar to one on PC.

Phone comes preloaded with Facebook, Youtube and a whole Google set of apps. There are few file managers in Play store like ES file manager or Total Commander, but that's a personal preference. You may want to have something for backup, like Titanium, or PhoneInfo for information or 3C Toolbox for details on hardware settings etc. But IMO there is no must have APP, it all depends on your particular use and interest.

Stupid questions?
Never used Android (iPhone users since day one).
Really want to move to Android while my friend wants to move to iPhone. So we can trade our phones.
She has S8 with T-Mobile (the phone is unlocked because she purchased it) and I have 7plus with Verizon.
She is willing to move to Verizon so my phone is perfect for her.
I read that her S8 can be flashed so it would work on Verizon.
Questions:
1) where can I obtain steps by steps to this procedure?
2) Functionally, is there anything Negative of flashing a TMobile to Verizon? One of my co-worker stated that you can't auto upgrade on the phone firmware down the road and there are glitches.
3) Is this the same as ROOT?
Thank you for your expertise.
After accepting the July security update from Tmobile, long pressing my home key no longer launches Google Assistant, Just Brings up Google Now. What gives?
Shutter Sound on the Unlocked Version of the Galaxy S8
Hi everyone. Noob to this forum and this is my first post.
My question is regarding the shutter sound on the camera. I have the US unlocked version of the phone (not carrier unlocked). I've made tinkers to it already (disabling permissions, etc.). But I noticed the option to turn off the camera's shutter sound is missing. Not sure if this is due to me tinkering or if the option is not even available on the unlocked version.
I went to Verizon today to play with their version, and it has the option to disable the sound.
Can anyone confirm that the stock unlocked version of the S8 indeed doesn't come with the option to turn off the shutter sound? I was going to do a hard reset to see if maybe I discabled something by accident, but would rather not go through the hassle of reconfiguring my device all over again.
Thanks in advance!
hi guys... i am really confused which phone to get. confused btw oneplus5 and S8. can you guys give your opinion on the S8 so it helps me to choose?
the only thing oneplus5 has better for me is the battery life and dual camera. how is the battery life for s8? how much screen on time are you getting with heavy usage?
Hello every one.
I own a french Galaxy S8 bought with SFR (a french carrier).
After certains phone calls (Voice mail, Customer Services) and if the other person hangs up ok google is not reconized anymore.
I tried to flash other firmware, reset the phone, unistall google, clear google data but that's not helping at all.
The only fix is to kill google app via the setting but it's stop working as soon you do a "bad" phone call.
My girlfriend's S7 have the same problem...
The only solution I found is to install newer versions that i can't find in the playstore of google app, play store and google play services taken form apkmirror. The issue is still here but I have to do more calls to trigger it. Strange fact but the last beta of the google app works worse than the previous (behave like the play store version).
I thought turning off the wifi will help because my S8 and my girlfriend S7 have this in common but it doesn't help.
I'm very perfectionist so i had search this issue from weeks but no solition found.
Sorry for my english, I'm French.
Any ideas ?
Have a nice day.

Chinese malware / spyware app built-in in the system of my s10+

As far as i know this is an app written by the Chinese and is highly probably comtaining hidden spyware that send confidential data to the Chinese government.

One shouldt always be sceptical when it comes to personal data. There have been incedents with data extraction in the past, older Xiaomi smartphones running dated firmwares were collecting personal data and sent it back home to chinese servers.
On the other hand, the amount of data Google collects from each and every Android device is quite terrifying. And I don't think that Google is the most trustworthy company in the world...

The hilarious thing in this post is that the "blind-love" to google, which makes my day My 2 cents are that in S10 there are more parts comes from Chinese venders than ever, so if you are afraid of that, maybe the best way is not use a mobile at all.

Just realized that the built-in Storage Analysis function in Device Care settings is powered by 360 Security.
As far as i know this is an app written by the Chinese and is highly probably comtaining hidden spyware that send confidential data to the Chinese government.
Any chance we can disable it, so that even clicking into that menu won't do nothing? I rather not use that funciton but to be safe. I was trying to use adhell to disable something but couldn't identify which system app is it.

ah ah ah .. I don't know from where you're from but as far I know, the WORST and BIGGEST spy are the usa : do I need to remind you about julien assange, chelsea mannings and many more ? Or the echelon program and so many we aren't even aware of ? (not to mention data collecting/selling by facebook/apple/google...) (I'm also not speaking of the stinky ****ty messy smelly bad **** they're doing all around the world, wars, geo politic business/manipulation just for the sake of them being able to keep on goin' in the good 'ol american way of life...)

Thanks for a post that is almost 100% BS and factually wrong. Julian Assange was Australian and he was a fugitive from a British arrest warrant. Chelsea Manning leaked intelligence documents and as far as I know wasn't involved in cyber crime. Where your hatred of the good 'ol American way of life originates I don't have a clue but apparently it didn't originate in school.
you guys might not know much about china and privacy in china, so just think steal personal data is a joke, as a guy who live in Hong Kong, i can tell you this is much more scary than you though, just like the huawei 5G in US now, many years ago, people in HK already know china company will steal data , but US just realise this recently...

what you said about USA might be true but at least they have freedom of speech.
Do you know in China certain words / phrases which speak the truth about PRC (such as 4th June 1989) or Xi Jinping's nickname, are filtered and monitored on EVERYBODY's phone and EVERY apps, so that you cannot even send those words out and police officers could just turn up at your door to arrest you.
Also, i havent seen any partnership between organizations like facebook and google with the US government... but Huawei, QQ (360 security), Xiaomi?? HAHAHAHAHA

there is no blind-love to google, maybe just blind-hate to Chinese companies.
i cannot live without a mobile, so i pick the "better" option.
A bit like the call screening function Hiya on the devices and also another call screening option on T Mobiles end that one cannot disable. They all steal and share the data.

First, Welcome. I hope you enjoy your time here.
As for the 6P, it is working fine. My understanding is that the bans are for new & future devices.
Regards.

This ban will not only effect people that live in the US. Google is a USA based company, so it effects play services as a whole.
Thank you, for your answers.
I asked this question because a friend just came back from New-york, and he told me his Huawei didn't cast the network.
When he was back, his mobile work again.
I suppose, i ll see that by myself

You're welcome.
Consider that Europe uses GSM, I believe and we use CDMA in the USA. Maybe that was an issue?
Beyond that, US distributed phones (not including the ones who had battery & boot loop issues, of course ?) are working fine but phones from outside the US could potentially be "suspect" so maybe there's a way they don't allow them to work? But I doubt it.
Perhaps your carrier can tell you...
God bless & I really hope you enjoy your stay ?.

What I have read is that the ban will only effect newer phones. An old phone like the 6P should be fine. Have you heard/read differently?
@NatesLaw
No. That's correct that devices that have already had access to play stores will continue. *as it stands now* and what I mean by that is trump already hammered the mfg once, if he says three months from now that google can't support even devices that already had access, I'm not sure google can fight that.
I was mainly stating the fact that the new devices that come out won't have access to play services period. His post made it sound like he thought they would only not be available In the US, but it would be worldwide since google is based in the US.
Realistically though, people could find a way to hack the api on the playstore apk to male it work on their devices, its the same way people have found a way to make play store work on phones running MIUI. In theory MIUI should never be able to run the play store apk, but that just isn't the case.
Hello guys,
Thank you for your help. I will give you a feed back soon
Nexus 6p works fine in New-York ?.
How can I close this thread? Just by updating the title?
