Hi, I'm not sure how to update my moto x style without wiping data and losing root.
I've read the following http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/help/updating-to-mm-lp-moto-x-pure-t3270473 but is there no way to update without wiping all data?
Secondly, is the marshmallow update even worth updating to at the current moment?
Thanks in advance.
You don't want to do a major update without wiping data.

Hi i'm sorry to ask it, but i couldn't find any proper answer to my question. I read about losing data, and either updating without losing it (or maybe i just misunderstood).
So, is it possible to update from a nightly to another without losing all tha data? (contacts, apps, savegames...)?
And do you advise me to update, since i'm using nightly build 4, and now those are up to build 41 XD?

Should be no problems, why dont you test? Do a backup before in case. =)
Dont wipe data if you want to save your things, just flash.
Was thinking this myself too, if we don't wipe the data does that mean the contacts/SMS/apps stay? and also what is a nightly? is it just a tiny update every night?

I am currently running 4.1.2 on a stocked, rooted nexus 7.
I have reviewed various threads about what is the best process/procedure to upgrade and maintain my root access but am currently confused. Some threads tell you that once you update and you have OTA rootkeeper it should allow you to keep your root even after you update. But then another thread has stated that you should choose temp un-root on the OTA rootkeeper application prior to upgrading, then upgrade then re-enable the root. I want to push ahead and upgrade but concerned something may break in the process. Any help or input would be very much appreciated.
Thanks,
JBIRD

The beauty of having any Nexus device is that it can simply be re-rooted again after any update. Me personally, I would just update, then just go through and re-root like you did the first time around.

Thanks, much appreciated. Do you recommend upgrading or should I remain on 4.1.2? is there better features on the later version?

Read here (everything minus the Photo Sphere camera, as we don't have a rear camera so this doesn't work): http://www.android.com/whatsnew/
Quick overview of the above: Multi-user support, Daydream, Expandable Notifications, Gesture Keyboard (kinda like Swype)...
I've flashed a 4.2.1 ROM and haven't had any issues with it. I know some have had issues with lag, seems to be fixed by stopping Google Currents from syncing (or uninstalling it).
EDIT: Here's the link to the ROM - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2013031
Greetings all,
I just had my phone rooted. (Thanks to all the great minds) I do have a question in regards to getting the updates while rooted.
1. Will the updates cause me to lose my root?
2. Will the updates be available while my is rooted?
Again, thank you all for doing such a great job with the root for the Note 3.
Unik!
Good question

As far as I know yes unless you disable that feature in some way.
You can freeze "SDM 1.0" with Titanium Backup (or ROM Toolbox, etc) to prevent you from receiving OTA updates.
If you don't disable SDM and there is an update, it will still not install itself. It will download it to your phone but there will be a prompt to install. Its best to disable SDM, imo, so you don't have constant "install update?" prompts.

You will continue to receive OTA updates when rooted, but don not accept them! Usually an OTA update will break your root abilities.

Is there a way where I can turn off anything that will automatically update?

It will tell you that there is an update to download and install. Your phone will NOT automatically download and install the update, it is all user control. Even if you accidentally download it, you do not have to install it. Again, installing updates is all user controlled.
Freeze FWUpgrade.apk too. As that does the work for the update. Usually an update does system checks. So if you froze things it will fall then and there. Assuming you are stock 100 percent, just rooted! Usually the update via without a hitch and you lose super user (root) status. Would have to wait for devs to patch and release a new root method.
Ideally hoping we get a safe strap for our devices soon. So when an update comes a dev can strip out the updated files and make them into a flashable zip to use with safe strap. So you can just flash the needed files and not lose root. But no idea on any one making safe strap progress.

Can't edit post. Ugh. Should day "assuming you are stock 100 percent, just rooted, usually if you ran an update it would go without a hitch. Install fine. You just lose SU"

You won't know, and you won't be able to upgrade until it is determined you won't loose root or there is a secure root method.

Welcome to the club!
Hi Everyone,
I have the G2, and wanted to get rid of annoying ads. So I rooted(that's it, stock, no recovery). I only rooted it. Everything is still stock. The only thing I added was superuser and busybox. I didn't install a recovery like Twrp or cm. I hate ads, that is the only reason I rooted. I didn't delete any bloatware, only froze with Titanium. Essentially everything is factory, except it is rooted.
Question: Will I be able to take the lollipop OTA?
If so, Will I lose root?
If I cant receive OTA, what do I need to do to receive ota update?
Thanks a bunch

Probably
Probably not
Flash stock .kdz
Well we are not likely to see a LP update in the near future, so no worries. As long as you haven't touched any system apps or installed custom recovery you will most likely be fine taking any OTA.
I think that OTA updates aint posible on some devices, like example mine which is 20b. I can only update via pc and lg update tool, but im kinda scared i wont brick my phone since i rooted it on stock 20b with towelroot.
Should i do the update? Can sh*t happen? I am looking over the forums atm, but wanted to ask.
Also im searching for a recovery install way on d802 with rooted 20b stock firmware.

If you are Stock you can still take the OTA if/when it comes out. Root has never been an issue upgrading with an OTA.
What makes the process fail is what you do with root, like changing DPI, changing the WiFi Tether App, physically deleting bloat (verse disabling it).
I'm not sure if you can root Lollipop yet. I've heard they are disabling the ability to root lollipop without a custom kernel.

Thanks,
I did few changes with xposed and g2 tweakbox, you think that could cause problems for the update?
I think i should really update 20b stock..

I wouldn't risk it, I've read a lot about people bricking their phone because they thought they could just uninstall xposed, uproot and update
Hey guys,
I've always rooted my galaxy S phones in the past, but I did never feel the need to root a nexus device until now. I would like to get the full functional pixel launcher, pixel navbar and the pixel apps to work on my nexus 6p, since they won't be coming to our devices.. But, since I've been out of all this for a while, I'd like to ask you some questions.
Is flashing TWRP and superSU still the way to go?
Is it still possible to flash system and radio to get the latest updates while still keeping your data?
Is root cloak working in 7.0?
What apps aren't working when rooted and what are other problems people run into with a rooted device these days?
Thanks in advance everyone!

There is a utility called FlashFire that will allow to to apply updates to a rooted phone without losing root or custom recovery.

Thanks for the tip!
Also, I've read somewhere that it's necessary to decrypt user data partition to make flashing zips possible. Is that true?

No, that is no longer true. TWRP 3.0.2-0 freezes on 7.0 encrypted so what you posted was the workaround. TWRP 3.0.2-2 is the latest version compatible with 7.0. You can install zips as normal. Thing is, it has a bug that affects backups. Read post #1152 of the TWRP thread for more info:
