This is more of a general Android question. I am trying to blank out the picture of one of my contacts on my phone and it keep resetting back to the picture associated with this person's gmail account. Is there any way to stop that from happening?

It's pulling the picture and possibly other information from their G+ account.
I have a similar issue, except mine is reverse. My business cell phone number is listed on my G+ account. So when someone with Android adds me as a contact, it automatically pulls my profile picture.

I found setting a static pic from my phone vs leaving it blank stopped it from happening.

Has anyone else had this problem? I continually re-update the contact through gmail then force update on phone, still 5-10 hours (guesstimate) it resets the contact picture back.
Any help or idea would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
What picture is it setting it back to? Do you have Facebook set to sync contact pics?

I do not have facebook sync turned on (not really a facebook person), I did at one point, but I turned it off (I double/triple checked this). I believe it resets to the SIM contact picture.

As far as I'm aware, SIM won't have the capacity to store contact pictures.
If you check within the contacts themselves they should show you all the images associated with that contact.
If you notice "additional" images try deleting them and see if that stops the images changing?
I manually deleted the images associated with each contact (looks like default HTC male/female head) quite some time ago. Anyhow, instead of changing the contact within gmail, I have decided to make the change on the phone itself. This is a PITA to do for all contacts, but will try.
The strange thing is that this only occurs with some contacts and not all.
The same contact pictures have reset once again. This time I noticed that the image it reset to is the same as the HTC HD2 male/female icon. And one other contact reset to the same really old (few years old) picture.
I am convinced they have to be coming from the SIM card.
I'm assuming you can't see the "old" images against the contact in the address book?
Have you checked your google contacts list (need to do this online) to make sure you don't have duplicate contacts which could be screwing up pics?
UPDATE: I got excited too early thinking the problem is fixed. It's just the google sync took too long. So, we still have to use magnifying glasses to view the tiny useless image for caller id picture.
One of my favorite feature on SE android phones is how uniquely it displays contact image while dialing or incoming call. That got messed up in previous update.
Now, it looks fine and the google image is not over writing the image selected on phone.
I've still got the problem in 2.3.4, in case the phone book is sync with Google contacts.
How to fix the problem??

The problem is still present in this update.
Tried using high res pics for my contacts.
Auto sync to Google contacts is enabled.
Viewed my contacts after the sync and picture size returned to low resolution.
Now I removed the check mark on "Sync Contacts" for a temporary solution and backed up the contacts on my desktop.
Sigh.
In my current 2.3.3 fw, the contact pictures do not have this problem if you go into album, select a picture, click on options and set it as caller image. However, if you go into your contact list and change the caller image by editing contact info, this problem comes up. Either way it's still too much hassle setting caller image for every contact in the phonebook. I'll bear with the tiny photo sync-ed with Facebook for now.

I waited for more than a minute and the high res image stayed. Must be some slow sync at that time. You are right it doesn't work even if you set contact picture form gallery instead of setting from Contacts - Edit.

If that worked in 2.3.3, it doesn't any more in 2.3.4.
I have solved this by adding the contact person manually as internal contact and not google contact. If you give it the same name it will automatically be linked to the google contact, you do not have to add any phone numbers, just an empty contact with the same name. This contact will have priority over the google contact and added highres pictures to the internal contact will be used instead of the small google/facebook contact.
I can see some reason to this, if you have 1MB pictures on over 100 contacts and you sync them all, that will cost allot for those who do not have unlimited data. Many users are not technically enough to be aware of this when setting up their new phone with a google contact, this could lead to allot of unhappy customers/users with huge bills just by synchonizing their contacts.
The other issue would be the huge cost of internal memory having 100MB consumed just to store high res pictures for 100+ contacts and time it might take to synchronize.
It might take some time to do this manually but once done the pictures will stay for the contacts. I do not mind this workaround to have high res pictures, but can see it might be a big hassle for those few how often reset their phones and would have to set everything up again and again.
Do any of you know where the contact pictures are stored? I would think the internal memory but I am not sure, I am only using high res pictures on a few of my contacts.
Use Sony sync for contacts and your images will remain the same.

Don't worry this firmware is just a middle version the "full" version will come in october till november so there is still a chance to fix :]
anyone else spotted anything else exept contacts?
This problem is back in the ICS(at least the Arconium 2.2 ICS) The callerID is ok if I use facebook contacs sync app from play store. But the main Sheet of contact info is different. It only has this cmall little useless picture on the top left. I want the faded almost full screen like picture back. Any ideas?
this isn't a bug with the sony firmware it is a google contacts sync problem there is a bug filed on it in the google code group but after 10 min of searching i couldn't find it
Pvy.
Sorry for such a rubbish question. I have searched, promise. Simple problem: The Photos for my contacts display in the People App and even show up when you tap on the grey square to bring up their contact information. It just doesn't show in the conversation/thread view. Bit annoying considering the photo is clearly stored in the contact info. Any ideas folks.
cheers
Go into Gmail Settings > General Settings
Scroll to the bottom. I have an option that says "Hide pictures in messages"
What's the status of yours?

That option is for showing images within messages, i don't believe its is related to contact pictures in conversation view.

I've seen the same problem in Gmail, Latitude and G-Talk.

Ok, it seems to be related to the very bizarre way android treats email addresses. Even though we all know email addresses are NOT case sensitive, Gmail and android don't appear to be able to treat them consistently. If the incoming email address does not match the case in the phone book exactly it won't show the contact photo.
What's even more bizarre is that i have two emails from the same person and it displays the first part of the email differently, once with upper case and once with lower case! I doubt very much that the business outgoing server is changing it so it must be either Gmail or Android?
Anybody else seen this behaviour?

YES! Annoying, isn't it? And they've commuted the bug in the latest Gmail 4.5
Anyone who cares, please Star this issue if you think it needs fixing

Thanks so much for finding this! A name in my contact list had the domain part written in all caps. I changed it to lower case, and contact photo showed up instantly on all of my email from him. Great find.
I've also noticed contacts with multiple email addresses do not show images consistently and is very annoying even when the case matches perfectly.
I noticed it dating back a few weeks but it's become so frequent that it's starting to annoy me. I'm referring to the picture I see in Gmail, Messaging and the pulldown notification bar. I've tried logging out of Google+ and logging back in, deleting my 'ME' contact in people, clicking on the image in people and waiting for it to 'refresh.' All of these are temporary but not permanent solutions. Anyone else have this happen?

Sounds like your phone is syncing to Google and replacing the picture. Try going into google from a pc and see if you can delete the phone profile then resync your phone.

Where should I go to delete the profile? The Play Store?
Ok this is infuriating. Some days ago i noticed the contact picture of my fiancee disappeared in the conversation with her on Hangouts. It just shows a green circle with a white head/body. But in the list of conversations, the contact picture shows up, as well as any notifications from messages she sends. Her contact picture still works 100% correctly on my work phone that has the same google account on it as well. I logged into contacts.google.com and updated her photo there, and it syncronized on both my phones but on my main phone (Galaxy S7 Edge), in the actual conversation it still shows the blank contact pic, but in the conversation list and notifications the contact pic i set does appear. I check my settings and it says Contacts sync is having a problem. Turning it off and back on a few times gets that error to go away, but still nothing. Everything from clearing cache, to clearing data, to disabling hangouts and renabling it, rebooting my phone multiple times....nothing. So then i add a different account on my phone to hangouts, and add my fiancee there and her contact picture works 100% like it should. What the heck is going on? Id say its isolated to my account but my account on my work phone (galaxy s4) has her contact picture working just fine. My account on my s7e is the one not showing her contact pic in conversation, but a different account on the same phone works fine? This is driving me nuts. Ive also verified that the contact picture shows up properly in both conversation list and actual conversation on the integrated hangouts messenger on gmail.com. I even watched it update there, both ways. She doesn't have a google+ photo set, however that was never an issue before.
Does anyone have any solutions to this issue? Thanks
Having the same issue in Hangouts on my Nexus 6. For some of my contacts, their photo shows correctly in the conversation list and in the conversation list itself. Others have the issue as you described. I've tried some of the same things you mentioned. Can't figure it out either but it is annoying as heck not being able to tell at a glance who said what in a conversation. I realize the names are below the messages but the pictures are a lot easier to use.

What makes it worse is that my work phone that had my Google account on it synced, everything's working as it should be. But not my personal phone. It doesn't make any sense.

There was some update to Hangouts couple of days ago and I think Google changed where the picture come from. Now only contacts with Google+ picture are show correctly and it ignores pictures assigned trough gmail contacts. It's the same on my wife's Galaxy S7 and mine Motorola Droid Turbo.

That is unfortunate. Updated hangouts on my work phone and the same exact thing happened. Guess you're right. Who do we complain to to try to get that changed back?
What I find especially odd though is that the assigned contact pic still shows up in the hangouts notifications and conversation list, just not the conversation itself.

Same here, I really dislike it.
It does it when using hangouts on the desktop as well. It makes it difficult when I have multiple chats open to quickly tell which chat belongs to which friend.
I'm having this problem as well. I've temporarily switched to Messenger until I can find a fix.
